Turkey Drive sponsored by Provident Bank to be held at Coca-Cola Park

November 4, 2021

Allentown, Pennsylvania (4 November 2021) – Provident Bank, New Bethany Ministries, and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs are partnering once again to hold a frozen turkey drive on Thursday, November 18 from 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA. Residents who visit the ballpark will be able to donate a frozen turkey (10-12 lb. preferred). The frozen turkeys will be collected in a refrigerated truck and stored until distribution later that afternoon. New Bethany Ministries has set a goal to collect and distribute 1,000 frozen turkeys to community-based nonprofits throughout the Lehigh Valley.

“New Bethany is truly grateful for the endless support from our community of volunteers and donors, especially now as we assist nonprofits from around the area in helping their clients celebrate Thanksgiving with a home-cooked meal,” said Marc Rittle, Executive Director of New Bethany Ministries. “Thanks to our partnership with Provident Bank and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, hundreds of families throughout the Lehigh Valley will have a turkey this year.”

This is Provident Bank’s fifth consecutive year sponsoring the frozen turkey drive, which was an idea of Provident’s Bob Price, Senior Vice President/Relationship Manager, Commercial Lending. Bob is also a long-time board member of New Bethany Ministries, now in their 36th year of providing Thanksgiving meals to community residents. This is also the fifth consecutive year that the refrigerated truck is being donated by Tom Mesko, a longtime friend and customer of Provident Bank.

“We’re proud to partner with New Bethany Ministries and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on this important initiative to support families of the Lehigh Valley. Involvement with the communities we serve and helping those in need is fundamental at Provident Bank,” said Chris Martin, Chairman and CEO.

Provident Bank employees will be on site to accept frozen turkeys outside of the Provident Bank Ticket Office at Coca-Cola Park. The first 500 people to donate a frozen turkey on Thursday, November 18 will receive a commemorative oven mitt. In addition, they will receive a coupon for 15% off their purchase at the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Clubhouse Store (coupon valid Thursday, November 18 only).

“For just this one time, it’s okay to ‘talk turkey’ instead of pork,” exclaimed IronPigs President and General Manager, Kurt Landes. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our fans and partners to provide a Thanksgiving turkey to support those throughout the Lehigh Valley who are unable to on their own. And Hambone appreciates and encourages the consumption of turkey on every holiday rather than other (gulp) alternatives.”

For more information on the frozen turkey drive, please visit ironpigsbaseball.com or call New Bethany Ministries at 610-691-5602.

2021 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge On Delmarva Delivers 173,000 Meals For Hunger Relief

September 27, 2021

SALISBURY, MD. (Tuesday, September 22, 2021) — As part of Perdue Farms’ “Delivering Hope To Our Neighbors®” hunger-relief initiative, the company teamed with the Delmarva Shorebirds minor league baseball team and three Delmarva Peninsula food banks to deliver 173,000 meals across the region’s communities in the season-long 2021 Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva.

“The impact of the pandemic has brought so much uncertainty and challenge to individuals and families struggling with food insecurity on the Delmarva Peninsula,” said Kim Nechay, executive director of the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. “After pausing the Strike Out Hunger Challenge last year because of the pandemic, we’re pleased that this year’s campaign once again provided a collaborative platform to raise public awareness about the problem of hunger and food insecurity and deliver much-needed relief to our neighbors in the communities where we live and work.”

According to research from the food banks, on average one in seven people on the Delmarva Peninsula are challenged by food insecurity. One third of that food-insecure population is children.

Since 2011, Perdue, the Shorebirds, food banks and the community at-large have embraced the Strike Out Hunger Challenge to generate more than 1.2 million meals for those in need on Delmarva.

“The Delmarva Shorebirds are so proud of this collaborative partnership that continues to put food on the table for so many of our neighbors in need during these difficult times,” said Jimmy Sweet, assistant general manager of the Delmarva Shorebirds. “We look forward to continuing our work with Perdue in this important effort to improve the quality of life on Delmarva.”

To drive this year’s Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva, Perdue Farms issued a $15,000 challenge grant funded by the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Foundation — the charitable giving arm of the company — to benefit the Eastern Shore Branch of the Maryland Food Bank, the Food Bank of Delaware and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

Each of the food banks were required to engage the Delmarva community to raise the equivalent of 10,000 meals in order to claim their equal share of the first $10,000 of the Foundation challenge grant. This included any combination of pounds of food collected, monies collected and donated, or volunteer hours throughout the duration of the Shorebirds’ season. Perdue also donated $10 for each time the Shorebirds’ pitchers struck out an opposing batter, up to $5,000.

“This annual campaign remains a pivotal part of the Maryland Food Banks’ ability to meet the needs of those who struggle to feed their families,” said Jennifer Small, senior regional program director for the Eastern Shore branch of the Maryland Food Bank. “As a result of our longstanding partnership with Perdue Farms and the Delmarva Shorebirds, and the support committed through the Perdue Strike Out Hunger Challenge on Delmarva, we are able to provide more food to Eastern Shore Marylanders challenged by food insecurity.”

As Chad Robinson, community relations manager for the Food Bank of Delaware, explains, “We are so grateful for Perdue’s leadership with this annual initiative. Partners like Perdue play a critical role in not only raising much needed funds, but bringing awareness of the critical issue that so many in our community face.”

The Winston-Salem Dash, in partnership with the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association (PTAA) and WXII will host the eleventh annual Fill the Stands with Cans Night as the Dash take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Saturday, August 14th at Truist Stadium.

The first food drive will occur on Friday, June 18th. The theme will be “Most Important Meal” food drive. Featured items for this drive include breakfast items like cereal, oatmeal, granola bars, boxed juices, and cereal bars.

Prior to the start of the pandemic, the San Antonio Food Bank was serving approximately 58,000 people per week in our 16 county service area. Due to the economic fall out of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are now serving 125,000 people per week. More than 1 in 4 children in San Antonio is at risk for hunger and 45,000 military members have received food assistance since the start of the pandemic. Today our community’s need is more than double what it was in February 2020. At the same time, our capacity to host volunteers has been cut in half from 1,000 per week to 500 per week, in order to allow for social distancing in our shifts.

The need for food, volunteers and cash donations has never been greater than this past year, but the San Antonio community has continued to rally together to support one another. Every $1 gifted to San Antonio Food Bank provides 7 meals to families facing hunger! On behalf of our staff and the many families we serve—thank you so much for your generous contributions. Our mission simply wouldn’t be possible with you. Please visit safoodbank.org for more information.

Welcome to clubphilanthropy.com!

Minor League Baseball clubs have been actively involved in their communities for many years. For the first time, their activities and contributions will be chronicled on this site.

Clubs don’t publicize all of their activity, so these stories represent a mere fraction of the contributions MiLB clubs make to their communities every year.
