NEST, Chasers Present Annual Essay Contest

The Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) and the Omaha Storm Chasers have officially begun the 15th annual “Why I Want to Go to College” essay contest, as announced by Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg.

Seventh and eighth grade students from around the country may submit their entries leading up to the March 17 deadline. Essays must be 750 words or less, describing the student’s educational goals and dreams for the future. Entries are required to be typed and double-spaced on 8 1/2 by 11″ paper and must be the student’s original work. Each essay must also be accompanied with the required cover sheet, which can be found by clicking here.

Faculty and students in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska Omaha will serve as preliminary judges for the contest, with Treasurer Stenberg making the final selections. Winners will receive prizes ranging from $500 to $2,000 toward a NEST College Savings Plan. First, second and third place winners will be honored from each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts, in addition to out-of-state entries.

All winners hailing from the state of Nebraska will be notified in May and will also receive four box seat tickets to the Storm Chasers’ game on May 21 versus the Reno Aces, in addition to being recognized prior to that day’s contest for their achievements. Each winning student will also get an opportunity to meet Nebraska State Treasurer Stenberg during the visit.

Chasers Earn Ballpark Digest’s Charity Award

The Omaha Storm Chasers have been announced as the recipient of Ballpark Digest‘s “2016 Charity Award” for the organization’s work in the community throughout the 2016 season. The Storm Chasers were also a finalist for the award in 2015.

“Our organization is truly humbled to receive this award,” said Storm Chasers President and General Manger Martie Cordaro. “While we give back to our community because we believe we have a responsibility to do so, it is still rewarding to be honored. I personally thank Ballpark Digest for recognizing our staff as industry leaders in giving back.”

The Storm Chasers organization, through its charitable arm Chasers Charities, set an all-time record in charitable giving in 2016, the fourth consecutive year the club has achieved that feat. In total, the organization donated $768,695 to local charities, an increase of $82,558 compared in 2015.

Among the highlights of the organization’s 2016 charitable work included providing a platform for 74 non-profit organizations at Werner Park as the “Community Organization of the Night”. Over $20,000 was raised through the McDonald’s and Huber Chevrolet Hurl the Pearl promotion for the Ronald McDonald House, in addition to over $23,000 donated to local charities, including Let’s Go Miles, Nebraska Organ Recovery and Methodist Hospital Foundation through four Game-Worn Jersey Auctions.

In total, the organization also combined for over 420 mascot and player appearances in the Omaha Metro community. The Storm Chasers front office also joined forces to record 932 hours of community service in 2016.

Chasers Set All-Time Charitable Giving Mark

The Omaha Storm Chasers set an all-time record in charitable giving for the fourth consecutive year in 2016. In total, the organization donated $768,695 to local charities this year, an increase of $82,558 compared to last year’s top mark.

“Remaining a cornerstone of charitable giving is imperative to what this organization stands for,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “With the visible presence and community center that Werner Park has become, we have a responsibility to Sarpy County and the Omaha Metro to give back and address needs in our community.”

The Storm Chasers organization provided a platform for 74 non-profit organizations at Werner Park as its Community Organization of the Night. The McDonalds and Huber Chevrolet Hurl the Pearl promotion also raised a record number of $20,663 for the Ronald McDonald House. In addition, over $23,000 was donated to local charities including Let’s Go Miles, Nebraska Organ Recovery and Methodist Hospital Foundation through four Game-Worn Jersey Auctions, with players and coaches wearing specialty jerseys.

The organization remained visible throughout the Omaha Metro, with mascots and players combining for over 420 appearances in the community. The Storm Chasers front office also combined for 932 hours of community service in 2016.

Storm Chasers Participating in Omaha Gives! on May 20

Charitable challenge benefits the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Last season the Omaha Storm Chasers and the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, the charitable arm of the organization, participated in Omaha Gives! for the first time. On May 20, the Storm Front Team Store will be the home for the charitable challenge from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Omaha Gives! is a 24-hour, online giving event organized by the Omaha Community Foundation to grow philanthropy in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties, with the goal to inspire the community to come together for 24 hours to contribute as many charitable dollars as possible to support the work of local non-profit organizations participating. Those interested in donating to the Home Run Foundation can do so online at www.omahagives24.org from midnight to midnight on May 20 with a minimum donation of $10.

As a part of the Omaha non-profit community, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha seeks to raise funds for their charitable contributions that benefit sports and recreational activities with a focus on youth. Planned Events for “Chasers Community Week”

Monday, May 4 – Storm Chasers staff members and Storm Chasers players volunteered from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. as part of “Rebuilding Together.” The participants helped Helen, an 87-year-old resident, with painting in various rooms and yard clean-up. Storm Chasers players Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann took part in the volunteering from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Tuesday, May 5 – Storm Chasers players, as well as select Storm Chasers staff, will visit kids at the Children’s Hospital from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Wednesday, May 6 – The Storm Chasers had “Phil the Pig” at the Children’s Museum in April for the Autism Action Partnership, and a check of donations will be presented at the game. Tickets will be donated to families involved with the Omaha Children’s Museum Autism Night.
Thursday, May 7 – Players and Storm Chasers staff will serve lunch at the Open Door Mission from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Friday, May 8 – The Storm Chasers will donate 50 tickets to have four Boys Town Houses come to the Friday night game, with a first pitch for each house. Storm Chasers players will greet and take photos before the game.
Saturday, May 9 – Partnering with Western Bowl and Muscular Dystrophy Association, a majority of the Storm Chasers roster is scheduled to bowl and interact with MDA families in an exclusive event from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Martie Cordaro Receives Jack Lewis Community Service Award at Omaha Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

OMAHA, Neb. – As part of the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro was honored with the Jack Lewis Community Service Award. The event was held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Scott Conference Center.

“The Storm Chasers are not validated by Championship rings and trophies, but are with the results that show the staff is truly dedicated to the area we live and work in,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “Our work is not important unless we have an impact on the lives of the people who support us, and that is what we continue to try to live up to every day.”

The Jack Lewis Service Community Service Award is the third community-based honor the Storm Chasers have received since the end of the 2014 season, and second for Cordaro as he was named “Community Partner of the Year” by Community 360 last September. The team was honored at the PRSA Nebraska Paper Anvil Awards Gala last December with the 2014 Community Service Award.

The Storm Chasers had a record-setting 2014 in terms of community involvement as the charitable arm of the team, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, donated $558,733 to local charities. The total was the largest since the team became the Storm Chasers in 2010.

The 2015 Hall of Fame inductees were Bruce Benedict, Ken Geddes, Peaches James, Christy Johnson-Lynch, Charles “Deacon” Jones, the 1985 Omaha Creighton Prep Football team and horse “Omaha.”

In addition to the honor for Cordaro the Westside High School baseball team was named Sportsmen of the Year, Creighton Volleyball’s Kelli Browning was named Sportswoman of the Year and Boxing’s “Fighter of the Year” Terence “Bud” Crawford was named the Founders Award winner.

The Omaha Sports Hall Of Fame was founded in 2006, with a goal to provide a permanent place to honor individuals with strong ties to Omaha who have achieved tremendous success through athletics.

All this week, Storm Chasers staff members will take part in “Read Across America” by donating their time to read to classes at schools throughout the Omaha Metro. The National Education Association’s program is the largest celebration of reading in the country with a purpose of motivating children, promoting student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers.

“Hit The Books” Bookmark Contest Winners

Overall Bookmark Contest Winner will be announced February 4

The highlight of the Storm Chasers “Hit The Books” Literacy Program, the 2015 Bookmark Contest Winners have been announced out of more than 10,000 submissions. This year’s “Hit The Books” Program saw the most schools participating in its history at 52, reaching 16,583 students.

The “Hit The Books” literacy program, presented by Nebraska Educational Savings Trust, has encouraged area elementary students that reading is an essential skill to have since 2007. Teachers at each school determine four different reading goals for the program. Students who “round the bases” receive four different prizes, including the grand prize of a ticket to a 2015 Storm Chasers game.

“Hit The Books” students can also participate in the Bookmark Contest, with a winner announced for each grade level. The overall winner, whose bookmark is distributed as a prize to all students, will be one of these grade level winners selected by the Storm Chasers:

Students in 7th and 8th grade write about “Why I Want to Go to College”

The Nebraska Educational Savings Trust (NEST) and the Omaha Storm Chasers have officially kicked off the 13th-annual “Why I Want to Go to College” essay contest, Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg announced today.

Students in 7th and 8th grade both in and outside the state of Nebraska may send their entries until the March 27 deadline. Essays must be 750 words or less, describing the student’s educational goals and dreams for the future. Entries must be typed, double-spaced on 8 1/2 by 11″ paper and must be the student’s original work. Each entry must be accompanied with the required cover sheet found here:

Judging will be conducted by faculty and students in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The essay contest awards 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of Nebraska’s three congressional districts, as well as Out-of-State, with winners earning prizes of $2,000, $1,000 and $500 toward a NEST College Savings Plan.

All winners from Nebraska, which will be notified in early May, receive four box seat tickets and earn recognition prior to the Storm Chasers game on May 10 against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Each winning student will get an opportunity to meet Nebraska State Treasurer Stenberg during the visit.

Mascot Stormy Debuts Children’s Book Saturday at The Bookworm

“Stormy and the Case of the Terrible Twister” is first ever children’s book produced by Storm Chasers

The Omaha Storm Chasers mascot Stormy has many accomplishments since he was born in 2010, but he will now add his own book to that list! “Stormy and the Case of the Terrible Twister,” the first ever children’s book produced by the Storm Chasers, will be officially released this Saturday at The Bookworm, and the mascot himself will be there!

The Bookworm, located at 2501 South 90th Street, will host Stormy on December 6 from 1 – 3 p.m. as part of the celebration for “Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day.” The price for each book is $13.95, and portions of the proceeds from purchases will go to the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha.

“Stormy and the Case of the Terrible Twister” was written David Green (son of Storm Chasers owner Gary Green) and Constantine Ladikos, while being illustrated by Andre Frattino. In the book Stormy learns a twister might spoil his special day at Werner Park, so he goes on a search to find the threatening twister.

Spotlight: Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Hy-Vee Shadow Lake – Nov. 21

The Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will serve as bell ringers for donations to the Salvation Army in front of Hy-Vee Shadow Lake on Friday, November 21^st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is the 4^th consecutive year the Storm Chasers staff has served as bell ringers. Mascot Stormy will be participating from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Staff Volunteering for November

Drumsticks on Wheels – On Saturday, November 22 starting at 9:30 a.m., members of the Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will volunteer their time to deliver the fixings of a proper Thanksgiving dinner to those in need in the Omaha Metro throughout the day. This is the fourth consecutive year the Chasers have participated in this cause.

Bellevue Bruins Baseball Spaghetti Feed – Wednesday, November 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at DJ’s Dugout in Bellevue.
Stormy and Vortex’s Birthday Party – Thursday, November 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Storm Front Team Store hosts the annual party with refreshments and party games, where attendees are asked to bring wrapped, unopened toys to donate to “Toys for Tots.”
Westroads Mall Santa Arrival Event – Saturday, November 15 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Martie Cordaro Named Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year at Awards Ceremony

At the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet at Embassy Suites in La Vista Thursday evening, Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro was named the 2014 Business Leader of the Year.

It was the first such honor for Cordaro, who was unable to be in attendance to personally accept the award with the Pacific Coast League Fall Meetings taking place in Chicago this week. It is the second time in six years an Omaha Royals/Storm Chasers Executive has been named the Business Leader of the Year, as former team President Alan Stein was honored in 2009.

“I am truly humbled and this award shows all the hard work by our staff in the four short years at Werner Park right here in beautiful Sarpy County,” said Cordaro in his taped message played at the ceremony. “Congratulations to all the nominees in this crowded field. I am speechless, which doesn’t happen very often. Let’s go out and continue to make Sarpy County the place to live in all of Nebraska.”

The Business Leader of the Year nomination field also included Russ Daub, Margaret White, Dan Zongkers and Tom Greco.

CHASERS IN THE COMMUNITY – 2014 Season Highlights

Largest total donation number since becoming the Storm Chasers with $558,733 in the past year

Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann visiting the VA Hospital during the 2014 season was one of the many highlights from a record-setting season for the Storm Chasers in terms of community involvement.

The Omaha Storm Chasers finished the 2014 season in spectacular fashion, winning the Triple-A National Championship in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history, but it was also a record-setting year for the Chasers community involvement. The charitable arm of the team, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, donated $558,733 to local charities in the past year for the largest total since becoming the Storm Chasers.

“The first four years at Werner Park have been nothing but historic on the field, but what the Storm Chasers staff takes the most pride in is the impact we have in the community we call home,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “To set total donation records in back-to-back years is as great of a victory as back-to-back National Championships in my eyes.”

At Werner Park, the Storm Chasers showcased 78 non-profit groups throughout the 2014 season with the Live Wise Coalition Community Organization of the Night to provide the outlet for many worthwhile causes in the Omaha Metro. This included Game Worn Jersey Auctions, which raised $14,640 for three local charities, and a highlight of Werner Park involvement with fans and staff donating more than $3,000 and 630 items to Pilger Tornado Relief over two games in late June.

Staples of Omaha Storm Chasers Baseball, “Hy-Vee Canned Food Sunday” and the “McDonald’s and Huber Automotive Hurl the Pearl” contest, had strong 2014 campaigns. The Heartland Hope Mission received 5,327 canned food donations ($37,289), the most since the move to Werner Park, while “Hurl the Pearl” accumulated $15,311 for the Ronald McDonald House marking a third straight year the team has raised more than $15,000 for the promotion.

The Storm Chasers players and mascots donated their time to the community with numerous player appearances at places such as Children’s/VA Hospitals. Stormy, Casey, Vortex and the three new mascots Kernel Cobb, Cappy and Sizzle made 335 mascot appearances throughout the year which was up by more than 100 appearances compared to the 2013 season.

The front office staff donated 870 hours throughout the year, including the Storm Chasers helping struggling families during last holiday season in “Drumstick On Wheels” and Chasers FUNdamentals teaching baseball to underprivileged youth this past summer. Last month, Martie Cordaro and the Storm Chasers were named the “Community Partner of the Year” by Community 360.

Third Annual Peanut Free Night at Werner Park

Hosted by the Omaha Storm Chasers and the Asthma and Allergy Center

On Tuesday, July 29^th, Werner Park will open its gates to fans with peanut allergies who cannot generally attend baseball games and other sporting events. For the entire week leading up to July 29^th, Werner Park will be sanitized and cleaned to rid of all peanut dust and allergens. There will be no peanuts, tree nuts, or sunflower seeds sold or present in the stadium. Children involved will have an opportunity to form a “Peanut Free Field of Dreams Team” and run on the field with the players prior to the game. Ticket packages also include first pitch opportunities, a meet and greet with an Omaha Storm Chaser player, and a pre-game parade.

VA Hospital Player Appearance – Omaha Storm Chasers staff and players will visit the VA Hospital on July 30th at 4101 Woolworth Avenue in Omaha, Nebraska.

“Peanut Free Night” at Werner Park July 29

3rd annual night includes “Peanut Free Experience” Ticket Package

Next Tuesday, the Omaha Storm Chasers will kick off their eight-game homestand with “Peanut Free Night” in association with the Asthma and Allergy Center, allowing fans affected by various allergies to visit Werner Park worry free in the third annual event.

“Peanut Free Night with the Omaha Storm Chasers is fast becoming one of our most unique, community events,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager for the Omaha Storm Chasers. “Our ballpark operations staff, led by Brett Myers and Matt Owen, work tirelessly to make sure that Werner Park is safe for all those that would otherwise not be able to attend a professional baseball game.”

For this special night, Werner Park will not serve any peanut-related items including sunflower seeds, tree nuts and of course peanuts. The process of deep-cleaning Werner Park for any peanut residue started immediately after Omaha’s game this past Sunday and will continue up until Tuesday. Werner Park also features gluten-free and vegetarian options at the Heartland Healthy Cart and other areas throughout the park.

In addition to welcoming fans affected by these various allergies that would not usually be able to attend a game, the Storm Chasers are taking it one step further by offering the “Peanut Free Experience” Ticket Package. The $10 package (with an option to add on a $3 Centris Family Fun Zone Wristband) includes:

Meet and Greet, Autograph session with two Omaha Storm Chasers Players (to be determined)
Pre-Game Peanut Free Parade on the field
Opportunity to be on “Peanut Free Field of Dreams Team” and chance at throwing out a first pitch
Deadline to purchase “Peanut Free Experience” Ticket Package is July 25

We’ve heard from parents telling us how much they appreciate this opportunity to have their children experience one of America’s past-times,” said Dr. Gregory Daniel Brooks of The Asthma and Allergy Center. “Peanut Free Night gives everyone a chance to raise awareness about food allergies and learn about new products, research and education.
