Over a thousand local students will train in one day at Four Winds Field to save lives

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Andrew T. Berlin and the executive team for the South Bend Cubs will host an event to train over a thousand local students from South Bend Community School Corporation and School City of Mishawaka in the life-saving technique of hands-only CPR. The idea, led by enFocus and a volunteer task force, began as one of several strategies intended to improve survival outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest in the community. The region’s first CPR mass training event is sponsored by the South Bend Cubs, Saint Joseph Health System, Beacon Health System, IOI Payroll Services, the University of Notre Dame and other anonymous donors. Volunteers and support have been provided by Fire Departments across the county, Indiana University South Bend, Saint Mary’s College, Papa Vino’s Italian Kitchen, Unity Medical & Surgical Hospital, and the American Heart Association. With the assistance of 200 volunteers, the mass training will take place on Four Winds Field in South Bend from 9 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27.

“This training will have an immediate impact by educating our students and empowering them to teach others” said Dale Lobo, Senior Fellow and Project Manager for enFocus. “We’ve been planning this for a long time, and as of the afternoon of September 27th, there will be 1,600 more people throughout the community trained to save lives. All 1,600 students will be given a training kit, complete with inflatable manikin and an instructional DVD that they can use to train their own family and friends. We know that greater bystander intervention is correlated with increased survival. In conjunction with our other initiatives, by training an additional 10% of the population in the next 3-5 years, we anticipate an increase in bystander intervention and survival from sudden cardiac arrest.”

“We knew immediately this would be good for everyone in St. Joseph County,” said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. “And this is a perfect place to do something of this magnitude. We have parking for school buses; the training video can be shown on our giant video screen; and we’re used to hosting thousands of people every day. We’re happy to be part of something that will impact our community for years to come.”

“The national survival rate for victims of sudden cardiac arrest is only 10%,” added Lobo. “It’s a sobering statistic. But here in St. Joseph County, the survival rate is even lower at only 5%. By training so many people in CPR all at once, we can make a big difference right away. And that difference will continue to grow as kids teach other people how to do it.”

More than 1,600 8th graders from Mishawaka and South Bend will arrive at Four Winds Field in 30-40 buses. The training, which takes place on the playing field, will be supplemented with information on how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and testimonies from survivors.

Wellness With the BlueClaws Clinic on August 31st

The BlueClaws, led by Strength & Conditioning Coach Jacob Bunce, will host a Baseball Wellness Clinic on August 31st.

LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws will host a special Wellness with the BlueClaws clinic at FirstEnergy Park on Thursday, August 31st from 10 am until 12 pm.

The camp will feature Speed & Quickness Base-Running Techniques, baseball agility drills, as well as obstacles and relay races and is for players of all ages and ability levels. They will learn the best techniques, exercises, and treatments to keep in prime athletic condition to maximize on-field production.

Jacob Bunce CSCS, CEP, USAW, the BlueClaws Strength and Conditiong Coach, will run the event, which will also feature BlueClaws players.

“In addition to showing various drills and techniques, this is going to be a fun clinic with BlueClaws players,” said Bunce, in his third year with the Phillies and first with the BlueClaws. “It’s a great opportunity for young players and athletes to learn to train like professional baseball players.”

Registration is just $10 and 100% of the proceeds will benefit BlueClaws Charities and their Community Partners Program. BlueClaws Charities works with 40 Community Partner organizations throughout the Jersey Shore and this event will support the end-of-season grant program.

Ashley HomeStore Donates 50 Mattress Sets

CORPUS CHRISTI — Ashley Furniture HomeStore’s “A Hope to Dream” program is donating 50 Tempur-Pedic mattress sets to local children in need during August. The furniture retailer’s goodwill project is in collaboration with the Corpus Christ Hooks Baseball Club.

Each mattress set is comprised of a mattress, foundation, and comforter.

Local partnerships with The Food Bank of Corpus Christi, KIII-TV3, KRIS-TV, The Beach 96.5, Hot Z95, Post Acute Medical, Colon and Rectal Associates of South Texas, the American Red Cross, and others are providing other donated items for 50 children to help them prepare for the 2017-18 school year.

Youngsters selected to receive a new bed will be treated to an evening at Whataburger Field and special night with the Hooks on Saturday, August 12.

“This event will be our largest single-day donation with our “A Hope to Dream” program,” said Paige Streiff, Owner of the Corpus Christi Ashley Furniture HomeStore. “As a mother of two young children, I witness first-hand what having a bed of their own and a quality night’s sleep can do for these developmental years. Bowie Baysox to Celebrate Play Ball Weekend

The Bowie Baysox, Class AA Minor League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are excited to announce local activities during PLAY BALL WEEKEND. Minor League Baseball is joining the second annual ‘PLAY BALL WEEKEND’ to now make the campaign both an MLB- and MiLB-wide effort to engage young baseball fans and celebrate the continued support of youth participation in baseball and softball.

On Saturday, June 3, the Baysox will “Take the Show On The Road” and bring “Baysox Baseball” to a youth baseball game on Saturday morning.   The Baysox will invade the 10U Crofton Cardinals vs. 10U LF Archers game being played on Field 1 at Bell Branch Park in Gambrills at 10:00 am and take over the entertainment including player and coach introductions before the game, National Anthem, between innings contests for the fans, appearances by Louie the Baysox mascot, batter walk up music and much more. Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend this special event.

During the Bowie Baysox home game on Saturday, June 3 at 6:35 pm there will be even more PLAY BALL events taking place.

  • Youth baseball players will be selected to play catch with Baysox players before the game on the field
  • A Youth baseball team will meet Baysox players in the dugout and take the field during player introductions for the National Anthem
  • A child will be selected to announce “Play Ball” before the game
  • Children will be selected to announce a batter via the stadium Public Address System

Saturday, June 3 @ 6:35 pm is Star Wars Night at the Baysox. See and meet dozens of Star Wars characters dressed in movie quality costumes. Fans will also get to see live light saber battles, Star Wars collectibles and a post-game Star Wars themed Fireworks Spectacular.

Sunday, June 4 @ 2:05 pm is Maryland Pride Day and the Helicopter Candy Drop.  The first 500 fans (18+) will get a Maryland Flag Baysox Logo Floppy Hat courtesy of Money One federal Credit Union. After the game, all kids ages 12 and under will be invited onto the field for the Helicopter Candy Drop. A helicopter will hover just a few feet over the field and drop over 10,000 pieces of candy onto the field.  Once the helicopter has left the stadium, the kids will get to run and collect as much candy as they can. The helicopter candy drop is presented by Borden Transportation.

Sun Screen Giveaway this Sunday, June 4

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 30, 2017) – The Kannapolis Intimidators will take part in Minor League Baseball’s Cover Your Bases initiative to promote sun safety awareness this Sunday, June 4, when the Intimidators take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System at 5:05 p.m. Gates open at 4:00 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans will receive a sample of Blue Lizard sunscreen as the Intimidators and Minor League Baseball team up with the American Cancer Society to educate fans about the danger of skin cancer.

Cover Your Bases, a partnership between MiLB and the American Cancer Society, will provide 75,000 free samples of sunscreen to Minor League fans at over 80 different ballparks this summer. The Intimidators, along with dozens of other MiLB teams will work to educate fans about the measures they can take to reduce the risks of cancerous developments and overexposure to UV rays.

“Each year, more than 3 million people develop skin cancer, the most common of all cancers,” said Sharon Byers, chief development and marketing officer, American Cancer Society. “This partnership gives us an opportunity to educate baseball fans about being sun smart.”

The American Cancer Society recommends:

• Seek shade: Avoid being outdoors in direct sunlight too long between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when

UV light is strongest.

• Protect your skin with clothing: When you are out in the sun, wear clothing to cover your skin. Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, or long skirts cover the most skin and are the most protective. A tightly woven fabric protects better than loosely woven clothing. If you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through, too.

• Wear a hat: A hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is ideal because it protects areas that are often exposed to intense sun, such as the ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp.

• Wear sunglasses that block UV rays

• Use sunscreen: Use an SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum sunscreen. Ideally, about one ounce, about a shot glass or palmful, should be used to cover the arms, legs, neck, and face of the average adult. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied at least every two hours to maintain protection.

Sunday is a Bark in the Park game as well as Kid’s Day, featuring a pregame autograph session with several Intimidators’ players, and postgame kids run the bases. Drillers to Partner with MiLB for Sun Safety Initiative

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Minor League Baseball™ (MiLB™) today announced the launch of a partnership with the American Cancer Society to promote sun safety measures.

The Cover Your Bases initiative will provide over 75,000 free sunscreen samples, provided by Bullfrog Sunscreen and Blue Lizard Sunscreen, to Minor League Baseball fans at over 80 ballparks between Memorial Day and June 30. In addition to the free sunscreen samples, participating Minor League Baseball clubs will provide fans information on skin cancer and measures they can take to proactively reduce the risk of cancerous developments due to overexposure to UV rays.

The Tulsa Drillers will be one of the participating clubs in this initiative as they will be handing out 1,000 sample packages of Blue Lizard Sunscreen at their matinee home game at ONEOK Field on Monday, June 12th. During that day, the Drillers will be reminding fans in various ways of the benefits of being safe in the sun, while warning them of the risks of excessive sun exposure.

“Minor League Baseball has long been a staple of summertime in America, and being outdoors increases the risk of overexposure to the sun and its potentially damaging rays,” said Minor League Baseball President and CEO Pat O’Conner. “This partnership will help educate our fans on ways they can enjoy summer activities safely, as well as methods of cancer prevention and treatment.”

Fightins announce Color the Stadium 5K “Running w/Scissors” Fun Run or Walk

(Reading, Pa) – The Reading Fightin Phils have announced there will be a Color the Stadium 5K “Running with Scissors” Fun Run or Walk presented by Penn State Health St. Joseph, Corps Fitness, IM ABLE Foundation and A Running Start on Saturday, June 10th.

The event will feature a pre-race party with a DJ to get everyone in the moving and grooving mood! The race will then kick off with a Color Blast with Reading Fightin Phils players & mascots. The race course will consist of inside and outside of FirstEnergy Stadium. Each lap around the stadium will be about a half mile. The start of the race will take place at 3pm, prior to the Reading Fightin Phils game.

Why are we running with scissors? Because no other color run does this! For this race and this race only – it’s FUN to run with scissors! People have always told us to not run with scissors. But for this fun race, we are throwing caution to the wind, and running with scissors, to raise money and draw attention to the Baseballtown Dream League – a new league and a new Savage 61 Dream Field that will allow children with physical and developmental challenges to play real baseball, on a real field, on a real team!

‘Namastadium’ yoga event returns on July 8

Namaste, Bisons fans!

Grab your yoga mats and join us on Saturday, July 8 at Coca-Cola Field for Namastadium 3. This annual event is a fun-filled day where fans of all ages can come out and practice their yoga poses in the outfield at Coca-Cola Field.

Doors open at 11 a.m. The yoga class, led by instructors from Power Yoga Buffalo, runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. The relaxation continues after class with light food and drinks available from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost for adults is $35, which includes a ticket for the yoga and one Buffalo Bisons flex ticket (which can be redeemed for a ticket to any Bisons home game excluding special events). Proceeds benefit Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Yogis in Service. Children 12 years old and younger are FREE to attend the kid’s portion, run by Yogis in Service. Advance registration is required for children.

KHN Presents Strike Out Stroke Event

Dayton, Ohio – Abbey Hendershott, a stroke survivor, will throw out the first pitch at the Dayton Dragons game on Sunday, May 21, at 2:07 p.m. when Kettering Health Network presents the “Strike Out Stroke™” event. The Dragons will be hosting the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field in downtown Dayton. Strike Out Stroke is a registered trademark of the “Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp.”

Hendershott experienced a stroke at her home on March 23, 2015. Despite being a nurse and recognizing the symptoms of a stroke, she initially attempted to talk herself out of the fact that she could be having one because she was only in her mid-twenties.

Hendershott’s face did not move when she smiled and went numb when she tried to laugh at a joke that her sister-in-law told. She was also experiencing numbness on the left side of her body. Her sister-in-law immediately called 911 and Hendershott was transported to Sycamore Medical Center.

After a one-day stay at that facility, she was taken to Kettering Medical Center for further evaluation and seen by Dr. Short, a neurosurgeon. Hendershott was released from the hospital three days later.

Hendershott provides a simple piece of advice to people who think they may be suffering a stroke no matter their age, “If you are having any symptoms, do not wait.”

Kettering Health Network will be on the plaza from noon-2:30 p.m. with stroke awareness and prevention information and will also be passing out various stroke awareness items.

Girl Scout Day is Sunday, May 21st

The Drive’s homestand concludes on Sunday, May 21st with Girl Scout Day at Fluor Field at 4:05 PM, and the Drive are teaming up with the Girl Scouts of South Carolina Mountains to Midlands for an exciting day.

Girl Scouts will participate in a pregame parade around Fluor Field, and when the gates open, there will be an on-field bridging ceremony in which Girl Scouts receive a commemorative patch from this special day. During the game, Girl Scouts will take part in the Education Adventure Challenge that teaches the importance of healthy living by combining Scout practices with the game of baseball.

Bees to Host Prevention Dimensions Kids Day

SALT LAKE CITY (May 8, 2017) – On Tuesday, May 9, the Salt Lake Bees and the Utah State Office of Education will host more than 12,000 students for Prevention Dimensions Kids Day, with free admission courtesy of Med One Capital and Questar.

The Bees will face the Omaha Storm Chasers at 10:35 a.m. at Smith’s Ballpark.

The fifth and sixth grade students attending the 15th annual event will be treated to an on field opening ceremony where Bees General Manager Marc Amicone will declare the day as Prevention Dimensions Kids Day in Utah, which promotes drug and alcohol prevention.

The National Anthem will be sung by Vienna Wolfgram, while a flag presentation will feature children from Eagle Bay Elementary, Lake Ridge Elementary School, Newman Elementary School, Nibley Elementary School, and Antelope Elementary School.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring a canned food donation for the Utah Food Bank as part of the program.

Prevention Dimensions is Utah’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities curriculum, which supports the Utah State Office of Education pre-kindergarten through 12th grade health core. The program strives to give students a strong foundation of effective violence and substance abuse prevention skills. The program began in 1982 as a joint effort between the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse, Utah State Department of Health, Utah State Office of Education and Utah State PTA.

Prevention Dimensions Kids Day is part of the Bees organization’s ongoing commitment to community outreach, health and wellness and youth development.

Rattlers and Elite Smiles Dental Make an Oral Health Challenge to Children 12 and Younger

GRAND CHUTE, WI – Elite Smiles Dental and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers want your children to have healthy teeth and gums. That is why they are asking children 12 years of age and younger to take the Oral Health Challenge. Each participant who successfully completes the challenge will receive two free tickets to a Timber Rattlers game.

Here is how the challenge works:

Once a participant has turned in a completed form, the participant will receive two reserved seat tickets to one of four Oral Health Days at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Those days are Thursday, May 18; Monday, June 12; Monday, July 24; and Tuesday, August 8.

Completed forms will be accepted until August 1, 2017.

Challengers may also want to come to the game on Friday, June 9 when the Rattlers and Elite Smiles Dental will be giving away a toothbrush holder to the first 1,000 fans. Game time is 7:05pm.

Partial season and group ticket packages are currently available for the 2017 season. Tickets packages are available online, over the phone at (920) 733-4152 or (800) WI-TIMBER, and in person. Individual game tickets for this season are also on sale now.   Groups of 20 or more may order tickets over the phone or in person. The Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium Box Office is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays.

River Cats set to salute Armed Forces during homestand

The Sacramento River Cats are back for a four-game homestand against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) starting Saturday, May 6. The homestand may be brief, but includes the annual fan-favorite Salute to Armed Forces celebration as well as the return of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) for a special softball match against the Sacramento All-Stars.

Saturday, May 6 – River Cats vs. Reno Aces

  • WWAST: The Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team will take on the Sacramento All-Stars at 3:30 pm. Tickets for tonight’s River Cats game also include the exhibition softball game. Gates open at 3 pm.

Jurassic Ballpark, PS4 Giveway, Reading All-Stars highlight 4-game home stand April 20-23

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 18, 2017) – With dinosaurs, fireworks, and a Play Station 4 giveaway, the Kannapolis Intimidators 4-game home stand April 20-23 has something for everyone. Fans in attendance on April 20 will be eligible to win a PS4 as the Intimidators host Gamer Night on Thirsty Thursday at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System.
