Military Appreciation Night at Parkview Field

Active and Veteran Military Members, Families Invited to Game on May 26

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps are proud to partner with the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc. to welcome military personnel to Parkview Field for Military Appreciation Night on Tuesday, May 26, when the TinCaps host the Great Lakes Loons in a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m.

Through the generosity of the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc., the TinCaps, and caring individual donors, complimentary tickets are currently available for military families, both active and veteran, to enjoy that night’s games.

“We are proud to partner with the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc. to provide military families the chance to be our guest on Military Appreciation Night,” said TinCaps President, Mike Nutter. “This is the seventh consecutive year we’ve welcomed military to Parkview Field in this way and it’s even more meaningful given the recent return of the 122nd Fighter Wing from their six month deployment. Our hope is that they can enjoy a TinCaps game with their family as our guests.”

“The men and women of our OmniSource and SDI family are proud and honored to be a part of this celebration for our courageous United States military heroes,” stated Russ Rinn, President & COO of the OmniSource Corporation. “We all know that because of them, we live in freedom.”

The TinCaps continue their partnership with the Northeast Indiana Military Assistance Network (N.E.I.M.A.N.) offering military in attendance the chance to visit kiosks highlighting many of the support organizations and offerings available to military, active and veteran, in our area.

TinCaps players will be wearing commemorative jerseys, and special military recognition will take place during the game. The TinCaps also will wear these patriotic jerseys on the Fourth of July. That day, the jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds being donated to Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.

Challenger Day Returns to Canal Park Sunday

(AKRON, OHIO) May 8, 2015 – The Akron RubberDucks are partnering with Northeast Ohio Roy Hobbs Baseball again to bring back “Challenger Day” on Sunday, May 10 at 12 p.m., prior to the finale of the three-game series between the Akron RubberDucks and the Binghamton Mets, which starts at 2:05 p.m. It will be the 17th year Challenger Day will be hosted at Canal Park, with the annual tradition started in 1999.

Challenger Day provides an opportunity for kids and adults with developmental disabilities to play a baseball game at Canal Park, and to meet and be cheered on by some of the RubberDucks players. Each participant will get to hit and play in the field, and get to experience what it is like to be a professional ballplayer for a day. Ages range from as young as seven to as old as 25.

“Challenger Day is one of the annual highlights of our schedule,” said RubberDucks general managerJim Pfander. “It is important to be able to give these young baseball players a chance to play at a facility like Canal Park, but the real fun comes from the smiles on the athletes’ faces and those on the faces of the RubberDucks players who are there to cheer them on.”

Challenger Day participants play in area Little League programs that include the Challenger program or in the Ohio Challenged Athletes program. Participants this year will be from teams in Hudson, Tallmadge, Green, Canton, Tuscarawas County, Barberton, including players from Akron and Cuyahoga Falls.

“The opportunity for these special athletes play baseball with the RubberDucks at Canal Park never ceases to be special,” said Tom Giffen, President of NEO Roy Hobbs. “We thank the RubberDucks for their support and involvement in this experience. It’s memorable for the youngsters and their parents as well as the RubberDucks players.”

Participants are scheduled to warm up at 11:45 a.m. with the game scheduled for 12 p.m. and it will last approximately one hour. At the conclusion, a team photo will be taken of the participants and the RubberDucks who cheered them on. Gates will open at 11:15 a.m. for any spectators.

9th Annual Swing for a Cure Slated for May 23rd

The Hillcats will have everyone wearing pink on Saturday, May 23rd with the 9th Annual “Swing For A Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Centra’s Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center! Proceeds from this event will benefit the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.

General admission tickets for the 6:30pm game against the Frederick Keys will be $11, with a portion of each ticket being donated to the fight against cancer. Plus, the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a free pink t-shirt! All Hillcats players will don pink commemorative jerseys which will then be up for bid during a silent auction during the game.

It’s estimated that there will be over 230,000 reported new cases of invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2015 and as many as 1 in 800 women in Virginia alone, may be diagnosed each year. The Susan G. Komen Foundation was created in 1982 by Komen’s sister and has since raised $2.5 billion for research, treatments, and support for survivors.

RiverDogs Announce “Shoes for Joe Night” on May 16

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Donate a new or used pair of sneakers and we’ll give you a free ticket to see the Charleston RiverDogs battle rival Greenville Drive on Saturday, May 16, in what will be one of the most unique starts in baseball history.

At this game, the Charleston RiverDogs will salute Greenville native “Shoeless “Joe Jackson with several promotions.

First, fans who bring a pair of new or used sneakers to donate to University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley’s INNERSOLE non-profit organization, will gain free admission to the game, which begins at 6:05 pm.

And then prior to the game, both the RiverDogs and Drive will take the field for the National Anthem lined up on the first and third base lines – of course – shoeless. The teams will also take a shoeless photo in front of Shoeless Joe’s Hill in right field.

“This night is a great opportunity to remember Shoeless Joe Jackson,” said RiverDogs sales representative Will Senn, who is responsible for coordinating the promotion and cultivating the relationship with INNERSOLE. “We’re thrilled that we’ve partnered with Coach Staley and INNERSOLE on this special night, in order to raise awareness and support for those in need.”

INNERSOLE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide new sneakers to children who are homeless and children who are in need. This is a national and international initiative that will make a difference in the lives of our children by starting the school year off with a new pair of sneakers. Coach Staley serves as co-founder and president of INNERSOLE.

“The partnership with the Charleston RiverDogs is a perfect example of how the community can partner with INNERSOLE and help us bring awareness to the challenges that homeless and underprivileged children face on a constant basis,” said Coach Staley. “One of our goals for INNERSOLE is to have a presence in every area of our State. The opportunity to partner with the Charleston RiverDogs and share our SOLE mission is just another step in that direction.”

“Shoeless Joe” Jackson played Major League baseball in the early part of the 20th century. He is remembered for his performance on the field and for his alleged association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series. As a result of Jackson’s association with the scandal, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Major League Baseball’s first commissioner, banned Jackson from playing after the 1920 season. Since then, Jackson’s guilt has been disputed, and his expulsion from baseball during the prime of his career made him one of the game’s legendary figures.

Jackson played for three Major League teams during his 12-year career. He spent 1908-09 as a member of the Philadelphia Athletics and 1910 with the minor league New Orleans Pelicans before joining the Cleveland Naps at the end of the 1910 season. He remained in Cleveland through the first part of the 1915 and played the remainder of the 1915 season through 1920 with the White Sox.

Jackson, primarily a left fielder, currently has the third-highest career batting average in major league history. In 1911, Jackson hit for a .408 average, and it remains as the sixth-highest single-season total since 1901, which marked the beginning of the modern era. Babe Ruth reportedly said that he modeled his hitting technique after Jackson’s.

The right field area in the RiverDogs’ facility – Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park – is named “Shoeless Joe’s Hill,” in honor of the Greenville native.

On Sunday, July 19th the Brooklyn Cyclones will wear special jerseys as they celebrate Relay for Life Day at MCU Park.  The jerseys will feature a purple ribbon with the names of those affected by cancer written on each jersey.  If you have a loved one you would like to feature on the jersey, you can make a $75 donation to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.  There is space for 75 names, so act quickly.

The jerseys will be raffled off during the game with all proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Socity.  You can also pre-order Jersey Replicas for $75.

Strike Out Cancer Night

Tampa, Fla. – The Tampa Yankees plan to Strike Out Cancer Saturday, June 6th, when they take on the Clearwater Threshers at 6:00PM. The gates at Steinbrenner Field will open promptly at 5:00PM. The night is sponsored by BayCare.

The Tampa Yankees players and coaches will be wearing custom made Strike Out Cancer jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. Proceeds from the auction will benefit BayCare. The Tampa Yankees hope to encourage cancer awareness in the bay area, and to contribute as much as possible to cancer research and treatment.

Fans are invited to come out to Steinbrenner Field early and enjoy a food truck Rally before the game. Trucks participating include Sarges BBQ, Disco Donuts, Kona Ice, Enjoi Sweets, PaniniRiffic, and Street Surfer. The first 500 fans to enter the stadium will receive a BayCare water bottle. To close out the night, there will be a fireworks display after the game sponsored by Sonny’s BBQ.

Strike Out Cancer Night is also a Friends and Family Saturday Sponsored by Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Fans can purchase Family-4-Packs which include four reserved tickets to the game, four hot dogs, four bags of chips, four sodas, four Tampa Yankees ball caps, and two passes to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo for just $38. The Tampa Yankees invite all children 14 and under to run the bases from 5:00-5:15PM. Some of the Tampa Yankees players will be on the concourse signing autographs from 5:10-5:30PM.

SALT LAKE CITY (May 4, 2015) – On Monday, May 11, the Salt Lake Bees and the Utah State Office of Education will host more than 13,000 students at the Prevention Dimensions Kids Day, with free admission courtesy of Med One Capital. The Bees vs. Reno Aces game has a special start time of 10:35 a.m. at Smith’s Ballpark.

This is the 13th edition of the Prevention Dimensions Kids Day. The fifth and sixth grade students in attendance will be treated to an opening ceremony on the field where State of Utah First Lady Jeanette Herbert will declare the day as Prevention Dimensions Kids Day in Utah, which promotes drug and alcohol prevention. A color guard presentation will feature students from Lake Ridge Elementary School.

Prevention Dimensions is Utah’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities curriculum, which supports the Utah State Office of Education pre-kindergarten through 12th grade health core. The program strives to give students a strong foundation of effective violence and substance abuse prevention skills. The program began in 1982 as a joint effort between the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse, Utah State Department of Health, Utah State Office of Education, and Utah State PTA.

Prevention Dimensions Day is part of the Bees organization’s ongoing commitment to community outreach, health and wellness and youth development.

5th Annual Cutters 5K to Benefit CDC

The Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 5th Annual Cutters 5K on Saturday, June 27th at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the final sprint inside the stadium finishing at home plate. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to take part in the event.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s event attracted over 200 participants. Since its inception, almost $50,000 has been raised for the CDC through this event.

“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” stated Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female runners will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC again on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 27th Crosscutters vs. Batavia MuckDogs game at 7:05pm. Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Track Club and Intermed, will be hosting the 15th annual Mother’s Day 5K Road Race on Sunday, May 10th at 9:15am. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine breast cancer patients and research with the funds being split between the Cancer Community Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation. There will also be a Kid’s Run, presented by Maine Running, beginning at 8:30am that is free of charge.

The Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5K is the largest 5K road race in the State of Maine. It is also the second largest road race in the state, only the Beach to Beacon is larger. A capped field of 3,000 runners is once again expected for this year’s race.

In the previous 14 years of the event, the Sea Dogs have been able to donate over $189,507.00 to support breast cancer research and patients in Maine including $20,000.00 from last year’s race.

All bags entering Hadlock Field will be inspected. The Sea Dogs highly recommend that people leave their bags at home or in the car. The Sea Dogs appreciate your patience and understanding.

Slugger and his Mom lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates with a unique finish inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout. The course is USAT&F certified and is part of the USAT&F Sanctioned Grand Prix series.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2015 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2015 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game.

The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. A limited number of spots are still available. Registration is $20.00. The kid’s race is free. If you would like to run in the 15th annual Sea Dogs’ Mother’s Day 5K you may register online at www.seadogs.com or at Fleet Feet Maine Running located on Marginal Way in Portland on Friday, May 8th from Noon to 6:00 PM or Saturday, May 9th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Additionally, if spots remain, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at Fleet Feet Maine Running during the same hours as above.

Road Closures:
Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM on Sunday, May 10th.

Father’s Day 5K

Pitch for the Cure Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Spokane, WA – The Spokane Indians are excited to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Pitch for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk, presented by Mike’s Hard Lemonade, this August! Click here to register!

Sunday, August 2nd, at Avista Stadium, will mark the tenth anniversary of this fun summer event. The short one-mile walk around Avista Stadium in support for Breast Cancer finishes with participants being recognized on the field during a special ceremony before the 3:30pm game. Indians players will wear pink jerseys and hats – to be auctioned – in the game against the Eugene Emeralds. The Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate will once again be the primary beneficiary of the day’s festivities.

“This is the tenth anniversary of the Pitch for the Cure – that’s an entire decade of raising awareness in the Spokane community…it’s fantastic,” said Randy Schwaegler, President of Komen’s Eastern Washington affiliate Board. “The event keeps growing every year, and the support is non-stop. This is why we come out every year – to give those who fight another reason for tomorrow.”

The cost for the walk is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under. Participants will receive a special edition 10th anniversary T-shirt, a donation in their name to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate, and a ticket to the Spokane Indians baseball game that afternoon.

Last year, the Spokane Indians donated a total of $9,000 to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate. In the ten year partnership, the Spokane Indians have donated over $40,000 to the Komen Foundation. Seventy-five percent of all funds donated to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate stays local and is given back to help those with breast cancer in Eastern Washington.

Deadline for early registration is Friday, July 17th, with a late fee of $5 after this date. Participants have until the day of event to sign-up. Packet pick-up is scheduled for Friday, July 31st from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Spokane Indians Team Store located at Avista Stadium (602 N. Havana) and the day of the walk starting at 2:30 PM at Avista Stadium.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Dragons Team Up For “Home Run For Life”

Dayton, Ohio — Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Dayton Dragons will host 13-year-old Parker McCalip during the unique “Home Run for Life” program on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps at Fifth Third Field.

The Anthem Home Run for Life program provides children in the Dayton region a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they battle serious medical conditions. Each honoree gets to take a symbolic home run lap around the bases of Fifth Third Field during a sold-out Dragons home game while the crowd provides a standing ovation.

Parker’s Story

When Parker was just eight years old, her second grade teacher noticed she was having frequent staring spells during school. Parker’s parents had feared something was wrong based on similar behaviors at home and took action once someone outside the family noticed her symptoms, as well.

The family’s pediatrician referred Parker to the neurology department at Dayton Children’s Hospital where she received an EEG, a test to detect abnormalities related to electrical activity of the brain. Parker was quickly diagnosed with epilepsy that included absence (petit mal) seizures. Absence seizures cause a short period of “blanking out” or staring into space.

Immediately, Parker started medication to get her condition under control. “I thought I wasn’t normal because no other kid I knew had to take medicine,” Parker said. As she got older and started to wean off the medication due to significant improvement, her situation suddenly became worse.

In August of 2009, Parker had her first grand mal seizure. These seizures are much more serious than absence seizures; they can involve violent muscle contractions and loss of consciousness. These more severe seizures continued through April 2012 for Parker. Fortunately, she hasn’t had once since then and is seizure free.

Parker is now 13 years old and in eighth grade at Oakwood Junior High School. Her epilepsy is something that she will have to manage her entire life, but it’s not going to stop her from achieving her goals. “I love science, inventing things and working with computers. When I grow up I want to be an engineer and a game designer,” Parker said.

Ducks Team with Oak Clinic to Send MS Quaking

(AKRON, OHIO) May 4, 2015 – The Akron RubberDucks hosted the Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis’ second annual Diamond Oak fundraiser during the Sunday, April 26 game at Canal Park, helping to raise almost $60,000 of dollars for MS awareness.

Funds were raised through a pre-game 1K Fun Run on the field and family catch in the outfield, and the Oak Clinic’s ticket sales for the game. The 1K Fun Run had 108 children participating and the almost 1,000 tickets were sold by the Oak Clinic.

“On behalf of the Oak Clinic for Multiple Sclerosis, I would like to thank the Akron RubberDucks for their support of our MS community. The overwhelming support from our friends, family, and community assisted the Oak Clinic in both raising almost $60,000 and educating over 2,200 grade school students about MS,” said Oak Clinic Director of Development Sue Arnold.

“We are proud to partner with the Oak Clinic and help raise funds and awareness to such a great cause,” said RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander. “On behalf of the Akron RubberDucks, I want to thank everyone from the kids who raised money to participate in the pre-game Fun Run, to the volunteers, patients, families and supporters of the Oak Clinic who attended the game. Seeing the Canal Park filled with fans wearing orange to recognize MS awareness was a humbling moment and we are excited to help the community and those affected by MS.”

Planned Events for “Chasers Community Week”

  • Monday, May 4 – Storm Chasers staff members and Storm Chasers players volunteered from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. as part of “Rebuilding Together.” The participants helped Helen, an 87-year-old resident, with painting in various rooms and yard clean-up. Storm Chasers players Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann took part in the volunteering from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 5 – Storm Chasers players, as well as select Storm Chasers staff, will visit kids at the Children’s Hospital from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 6 – The Storm Chasers had “Phil the Pig” at the Children’s Museum in April for the Autism Action Partnership, and a check of donations will be presented at the game. Tickets will be donated to families involved with the Omaha Children’s Museum Autism Night.
  • Thursday, May 7 – Players and Storm Chasers staff will serve lunch at the Open Door Mission from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Friday, May 8 – The Storm Chasers will donate 50 tickets to have four Boys Town Houses come to the Friday night game, with a first pitch for each house. Storm Chasers players will greet and take photos before the game.
  • Saturday, May 9 – Partnering with Western Bowl and Muscular Dystrophy Association, a majority of the Storm Chasers roster is scheduled to bowl and interact with MDA families in an exclusive event from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Local Make-A-Wish Foundation will grant a wish on May 4

ZEBULON, NC – The Carolina Mudcats, the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and member of the historic Carolina League, will host the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina as they grant a special wish on May the Fourth Be With You Night at Five County Stadium on Monday, May 4.

May the Fourth Be With You is a Star Wars themed night that will take place on Monday, May 4 when the Mudcats play the Frederick Keys in Zebulon at 7:00 p.m.

The Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation will grant a special wish to a young child with a special ceremony scheduled to take place on the field on May 4 in conjunction with the special theme night. Additionally, the Mudcats will also make a donation to the Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation with a check presentation before the game.

The Mudcats have also invited young fans, and their families, from the Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation to participate in the May the Fourth Be With You festivities. Fans wearing a Star Wars themed costume to the game will have an opportunity to purchase $6.00 discounted tickets.

The Carolina Garrison, a local chapter of the 501st Legion (a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization comprised of and operated by Star Wars fans) will also participate in Monday’s May the Fourth Be With You Night. The Carolina Garrison is the only official chapter of the 501st Legion in North and South Carolina.

May the Fourth Be With You is one of several special theme nights set to take place at Five County Stadium during the home stand. The home stand, which begins on Friday, May 1, also features NC State Day and Pro Wrestling Day on Sunday, May 3.

Former NFL and NC State Wolfpack star players Terrence and Torry Holt will be at Five County Stadium for NC State on May 3. The brothers will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and hold signups for their upcoming Holt Brothers Football Camp scheduled for June 27 in Raleigh.

Additionally, an appearance by Sgt. Slaughter is scheduled for Sunday, May 3 as part of Pro Wrestling Day.

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The 2015 “Braves New World” season is the first for the Mudcats as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and their fourth straight in the historic Carolina League. First established in 1991, the Carolina Mudcats are entering their 25th straight season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. Salem Red Sox to Honor Military Members With Trading Card Set

Fans encouraged to submit local Military members through June 26

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox are excited to announce that as part of the season-long Freedom Friday series, the team will honor local military members with a trading card set on Military Appreciation Day in August.

Starting with tonight’s contest, fans can submit a family member or friend from the Roanoke area that has served or is currently serving in any branch of the United States armed forces. Submissions will be accepted at the guest services booth on the concourse at LewisGale Field on the following Freedom Fridays: May 1, May 8, May 22, June 5, June 12, and June 26. Submissions need to include a photo and background information of the military member.

The submissions will then be sent to a selection committee and the final list of members that will be included in the trading card set will be announced in early July. The entire set will be given away on Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 29. In addition, those members selected will be honored with an on-field ceremony prior to the game.

Not all submissions to the Red Sox will be selected due to limited space in the trading card set. Any active, retired or deceased member of the military is eligible for submission and subsequent selection. Fans that are unable to attend the selected games, but would still like to submit a military member can do so by e-mailing military@salemsox.com.
