Fightins Looking to Help Charities in Season of Giving

Franchise announces community outreach program in time for holiday season

The 2013 Season of Giving will directly aid local non-profit and charitable organizations throughout the holiday season.

In cooperation with many of the non-profit and charitable organizations throughout the region, the Reading Fightin Phils are launching the 2013 Season of Giving in the Mitchell & Ness Fightins Team Store this holiday season.

Starting with the Toys for Tots collection on Sunday, November 3, the Fightin Phils will give back 20% of your purchase when you mention your participating organization at checkout during the Season of Giving. The proceeds raised through the Season of Giving will go directly to the organizations. Shoppers can support the community organizations until Christmas Eve on December 24.

“In the spirit of the holidays, we’re bringing back the Season of Giving as a way to say thanks to the hard-working non-profit community,” said Director of Community Relations Mike Robinson. “This is a way for us to spread some cheer towards local organizations while raising awareness for their efforts.”

Once the Season of Giving begins, the team store’s hours will expand to 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Organizations interested in taking part in the 2013 Season of Giving can reach out to Director of Community Relations Mike Robinson at mrobinson@fightins.com or Merchandising Manager Zack Haas at zhaas@fightins.com for additional information.

Fans will have the chance to support the first Season of Giving organization this Wednesday at the Charlie Adams Farewell Broadcast where team store purchases from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will aid the Exeter Public Library.

Threshers, Fans Raise Nearly $6,000 on Military Night

Proceeds Benefit Sand Soldiers of America, Haley House Fund

Clearwater-ThreshersThe Clearwater Threshers are pleased to announce that their fans helped raise nearly $6,000 on August 17 to benefit two organizations for the support of U.S. military veterans.

The Threshers held 2013’s Military Night on August 17 in their Saturday night game against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Bright House Field, and their fans came out in force to support the troops. 4,183 fans turned Sand-Soldiers-of-America-Logoout to raise $5,807.50, which was split between Sand Soldiers of America and the Haley House Fund. Each group received $2,903.75 in a ceremony on the field on the season’s final day.

Baseball Dinner Breaks $1 Million Mark

Surpassed $1 million in total money raised during 2013 dinner

New-Hampshire-Fisher-Cats-logo-2013With a retrospective video and a burst of confetti, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats announced tonight that the 2013 edition of the Granite State Baseball Dinner has pushed the event’s fundraising total beyond a milestone marker. Tonight’s proceeds, which are still being finalized, have driven the money raised by the dinner since 2007 beyond $1 million to benefit the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD), the Ted Williams Museum, and the Fisher Cats Foundation.

Fisher-Cats-Foundation-logo-2013“Since our team became involved in reviving the dinner in 2007, this event has meant so much to our organization,” said Art Solomon, Fisher Cats owner and Chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation Board. “We are so pleased to reach this milestone, and we take pride in being able to continue the rich tradition of this dinner. We want to thank all of the celebrated guests, sponsors, and fans over the years that have joined us in making a positive impact on three incredible organizations.”

CHaD-Hospital-logoThe Fisher Cats first involvement in the Granite State Baseball Dinner, now presented by Northeast Delta Dental, came in January of 2007. In 2008, the team followed up its January event with a second dinner in November, permanently shifting the state’s largest fundraising dinner to its current place on the calendar on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Ted-Williams-MuseumSince the revival in 2007, the total funds raised by the dinner sat at $979,794.46 entering tonight. During that time, CHaD has received nearly $430,000 to support the programs at one of the world’s leading research hospitals. The Fisher Cats Foundation has received a similar amount, and it has used that money, in part, to fund scholarships to 80 college-bound seniors in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. The Ted Williams Museum has been gifted with $125,000 to continue its mission to provide youth baseball programs and scholarships while adding to the heritage of the national pastime.

The 2013 dinner was highlighted by World Champion Boston Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes and New Hampshire legend Chris Carpenter, who announced the end of his illustrious career just a few days ago. Additional past celebrities have included baseball Hall-of-Famers Wade Boggs and Jim Rice, ‘Mr. Red Sox’ Johnny Pesky, renowned sluggers Cecil Fielder and Fred McGriff, and legends of the Boston sports scene including the Bruins’ Terry O’Reilly, the Celtics’ Cedric Maxwell, and the Patriots’ Steve Nelson. More than 7,200 fans have enjoyed the company of these celebrities – and many more – since 2007.

2013 Marauders Honored for Community Commitment

Bradenton-MaraudersA pair of 2013 Marauders received “Pirates Community Commitment Awards” at PNC Park before the Pirates faced the Padres on Tuesday, September 17. Matt Benedict received an award as a Marauder, while Nick Kingham was honored as the Altoona Curve representative. Both right-handed pitchers completed an exemplary amount of community service and showed great dedication to their communities during the 2013 season.

Pirates-Community-Commitment-Program-logoAs part of the Pirates Community Commitment Program, each minor league player must complete 10 hours of community service in their affiliate’s community each season. Many players go above and beyond the 10 hour mark. The 2013 Bradenton Marauders completed more than 300 hours of community service through the program.

Near the conclusion of each affiliate’s regular season, the Pirates present one player from each affiliate with the “Pirates Community Commitment Award” in recognition of his commitment to his community and the program. The Pirates will fly each award winner to Pittsburgh to receive the award as part of a special on-field ceremony at PNC Park that will also include the presenting of the team’s annual Roberto Clemente Award to the Pirates Major League Player selected for his character and charitable contributions to his community.

Benedict, a St. Petersburg native, completed more than 30 hours of community service in 2013. He has pitched for the Marauders in each of the last two seasons. 2013 was his third season in professional baseball.

Kingham resides in Las Vegas Nevada. A 2013 Florida State League All Star, Kingham was promoted to Altoona in June for the remainder of his fourth professional season.

Shorebirds Asst. GM named President of BBBS

Jimmy Sweet to run Big Brothers Big Sisters locally

 

 

Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds are proud to announce that team Assistant General Manager, Jimmy Sweet, has been named President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lower Eastern Shore. Sweet will continue his duties with the Shorebirds while serving as the president of BBBS on the Eastern Shore.

Sweet has been on the board of BBBS for five years in a variety of roles.

“I’m honored to take over for John Allen to help area youth prosper through the many outstanding programs that Big Brothers Big Sisters offers,” said Jimmy Sweet. “I’m very grateful to be in leadership roles for two great teams, the Delmarva Shorebirds and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lower Eastern Shore.”

Sweet joined the Shorebirds front office staff in 2003. He has served in his current role of assistant general manager for eight years.

Kevin Nolan Named Blue Jays Community Service Winner

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Toronto Blue Jays, parent club of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, have announced that shortstop Kevin Nolan is this year’s winner of the Blue Jays Community Service Award. The 25 year-old New Hampshire shortstop has proven his commitment to the community through his tireless efforts and positive attitude.

“Kevin’s efforts in the community enhanced many lives beyond the diamond and this recognition is extremely well deserved,” said Fisher Cats President Rick Brenner. “The Blue Jays and their players know the importance of giving back to the communities where they spend their summer, and Kevin represented himself, the Fisher Cats, and the Blue Jays with class all season long. We appreciate all of his efforts.”

Nolan participated in nearly all of the team community appearances, always representing the organization with class and professionalism. A native of Nashua, Nolan contributed his time in many ways, including;

* Joining 100+ kids at a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Baseball/Softball Camp as a camp counselor at the first camp of the season
* Visiting, speaking to, and signing autographs for 100+ kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua on August 6, 2013
* Inviting the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua to two (2) Fisher Cats games during the 2013 season; greeting the kids, signing autographs and helping to provide ice cream during the 7th Inning Stretch
* Taking time out of his pre-game routine to host special meet-and-greets with kids that expressed a personal interest in meeting him and growing up to be “just like him”
* Greeting patients from the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and families alongside WMUR’s Jason King for a special batting practice for CHaD Kids
* Appearing at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Nashua New Hampshire for the spring registrations for Nashua Little League providing well-wishes to kids for their season

Nolan will be coming back to New Hampshire as a guest of honor at the annual Granite State Baseball Dinner, presented by Northeast Delta Dental, on Nov. 23. The event, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Expo Center in Manchester, raises money for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, the Ted Williams Museum, and the Fisher Cats Foundation.

BlueClaws Charities Named “Citizen of the Year”

BlueClaws Charities Executive Director Jim DeAngelis will accept the award on behalf of the BlueClaws and BlueClaws Charities.

BlueClaws Charities raised thousands of dollars for those impacted by Superstorm Sandy through t-shirt sales, Restore the Shore Fridays, a BlueClaws Restore the Shore jersey auction, and private donations. The organization then collected grant applications and was able to hand out over $50,000 in grants to help area families.

Meanwhile, BlueClaws Charities works with over 40 Community Partners, area non-profit organizations who raise money through the BlueClaws. These organizations also benefit through various BlueClaws Charities fundraising events throughout the year like jersey auctions, “Bowling With the BlueClaws,” the “BlueClaws Charities Nine and Dine” golf outing, and more.

Community Love: 2013 Thus Far

Thousands of Hours, Over $200,000 Given Back to NEPA

Moosic, Pa. – It’s more than numbers. It’s more than hours or dollars. It’s human. It’s real. It’s one of life’s most paradoxical, yet overwhelming true truths. An intangible concept, an experience really, that resounds with a firmness greater than Montage Mountain herself. It is better to give than to receive. Year one of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) and the new PNC Field afforded the new-look franchise and the good folks of NEPA to get to know each other once more through more than just baseball. And the giving? Well, it sure felt good.

Below is a quick checklist of the highlight totals in 2013:

Front office staff hours volunteered: 890.5

Player hours volunteered: 202.5

Mascot appearances: 130

Donations: $24,044 (tickets/merchandise/autographed memorabilia)

Hurl the Pearl donation (Boys & Girls Club): $12,092

Allied Health Services donation: $16,000

Total donation including monetary value of volunteered hours from team/staff, all monetary donations and in-kind donations: $217,737

“The sum totals sound good, but what sticks with me are the individual moments,” said RailRiders president/GM Rob Crain. “I got more goosebumps from seeing the impact of the efforts spearheaded by our staff and community relations manager Rachel Mark than I’ve had at any other point in my life. It was a very good year.”

The Community Organization of the Night program made its debut this season. Each of the team’s 72 home games spotlighted a local non-profit/civic organization. That CON had the opportunity to spread its message to every guest through a pre-game on-field interview, a ceremonial first pitch, an on-air radio interview and a concourse table display.

The RailRiders’ Military Appreciation Program was implemented this season to show the team’s support of our nation’s active and retired military. The serviceperson and his/her family were honored. Activities included complimentary game tickets, a pre-game on-field interview and a ceremonial first pitch.

SWB’s patriotic pride continued with another new tip of the cap, Setting A Seat Aside. To honor men and women affiliated with our nation’s military whom could not be at PNC Field, one significant seat (section 13, row 15, seat one) will forever remain empty and unsold.

A standard from previous years got a big boost as the Adopt-A-Field Program upped the number of local fields renovated to four. Front office staff and grounds crew members combined to give the area little league/softball fields a big league facelift. Staffers spent the entire day at each park cutting the infield, rebuilding pitching mounds, fertilizing/mowing grass, cleaning dugouts and more. The fields were chosen through a contest on the team’s Facebook page with representatives of local leagues posting pictures of their field and describing its renovation needs. The four photos that received the most “likes” on Facebook were the lucky winners (Avoca/Dupont Little League; South Scranton Little League; Staback Park; Marvine Dutch Gap).

As the top affiliate of the New York Yankees, the RailRiders proudly played their part in the organization’s annual HOPE (Helping Others Persevere and Excel) Week effort. The week-long community outreach program’s purpose is to touch as many lives as possible in your area. Members of the RailRiders’ coaching staff, players and front office folks made their way throughout NEPA.

The week included a Children’s Miracle Network Day at the Ballpark on July 7. Twin boys who have overcome the worst of health adversities spent time on the field with players during batting practice, stopped by the pre-game clubhouse, threw out ceremonial first pitches and spent the game in the owner’s suite with friends and family. One day later, the RailRiders hosted a baseball game for the Lackawanna County Challenger Little League. LCCLL gives children with special needs the chance to participate in athletics. RailRiders coaches and players spent the entire game on the field, coaching and encouraging the boys and girls while helping them to bat, run and slide. A ballpark lunch followed. July 9 meant two surprise hospital visits to Moses Taylor and Geisinger in downtown Scranton. Patients interacted with the players while receiving giveaways, autographs and an overall fun time. The week concluded with players and front office staffers visiting the Boys & Girls Club of NEPA. The morning was spent playing baseball, billiards and computer games. The epic conclusion sported a dodgeball match between the RailRiders and the Boys & Girls club.

On Aug. 21, a tag-team food drive by the RailRiders and the Voluntary Action Center of NEPA sought out to stock as many food pantries in NEPA as possible. Fans received free game tickets in exchange for non-perishable food items. In addition to the food from fans, the RailRiders also presented the Voluntary Action Center with a check for $1,300 to assist with the fight against hunger in NEPA.

The RailRiders’ 2014 season begins on Thursday, April 3 when the club kicks off a seven-game road trip at Syracuse against the Chiefs (Washington Nationals). The home slate commences a week later on Thursday, April 10 when the Chiefs visit PNC Field for a four-game series and homestand. Dead River Company to Host Food Drive at Hadlock Saturday

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with the Dead River Company to host a food drive at Hadlock Field on Saturday, August 31st when the Sea Dogs take on the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) in a single-admission doubleheader at 5:00 PM.

The food drive is benefitting the Good Shepherd Food Bank and kicks-off National Hunger Action Month (September). Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the game that will be collected by the Good Shepherd for distribution throughout their vast network in helping feed those at risk of hunger in Maine.

The first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark will also receive Dead River Company hats.

Before the game, there will also be an on field check ceremony where Dead River Company will be presenting a donation to Good Shepherd as part of their season long promotion with the Sea Dogs, Score 4 for Hunger.

DIVERSITY DAY ON CONEY ISLAND – AUGUST 19th

Brooklyn NY, August 14, 2013 – Last week, vandals defaced the statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, located outside MCU Park in Coney Island with hateful words and symbols which have since been removed. In light of these recent events, the Cyclones and Alliance for Coney Island will join together with community leaders to host Diversity Day in Coney Island, for what will be a historic doubleheader on Monday, August 19th in conjunction with the Coney Island Flicks on the Beach screening of “42” later in the evening

Prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones taking on the Staten Island Yankees in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 PM, the Cyclones, along with The Jackie Robinson Foundation, The Jackie Robinson Little League, Major League Baseball and other local community leaders will host a rededication ceremony for the Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese statue, which stands as a monument to these men of “courage and conviction” as engraved on the base of the statue which was originally erected in November 2005.

“The events of last week were both heartbreaking and incomprehensible” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. “But we are trying to turn the negative and disgusting actions of one person into a night of unity and understanding for an entire community. Over 60 years ago Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese stood resolute in the face of bigotry and hatred, and in a much smaller way we are trying to do the same thing.”

Following the ceremony and baseball game, there will be a special screening of the Warner Bros. movie “42” as part of the “Flicks on the Beach” Series presented by Alliance for Coney Island, Rooftop Films and NYC & Company. Guests will be invited to watch the critically-acclaimed film on a 40-foot screen on the sand of Coney Island near West 10th Street.

“We are proud to be screening the monumental film ‘42’ which provides a biography of Brooklyn hero Jackie Robinson. A silver lining to this offensive act is that Coney Island can band together and commemorate Robinson’s legacy during Diversity Day, and celebrate the strength of our community and the history of Brooklyn,” said Johanna Zaki, Alliance for Coney Island Director of Operations.

Douglas Park FREE Baseball Clinic

The Elizabethton Twins will be conducting a free Youth Baseball Clinic on August 17, 10:30AM to 12:30PM at Douglas Park.

Douglas Park is located behind the Elizabethton City School System Administrative Offices at 804 South Watauga Avenue. Instruction in the fundamentals of baseball will take place along with lunch and an autograph session.

“We look forward to a great day at Douglas Park and hope to see many of our local youth at this event, said Mike Mains, Parks and Recreation Director.” “This is just another way our Minor League Baseball Franchise can give back to this community which is a win for our players, staff and fans alike.”

The camp will feature basic instruction in hitting, fielding and throwing. Participants will also have the opportunity to talk one on one with Elizabethton Twins players, will receive tickets to a future game and will have lunch with team members. Participants must be above seven years of age. This is a free event sponsored by the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department. For more information call 423-547-6441.

New Life Necessities Diaper Drive

FREE Admission with a Diaper Donation

Your donation of a package of diapers will gain you free admission to Power games all month long!

Life Necessities Diaper Bank, a program of CDOM, was established to eradicate diaper need in West Virginia. New Life Necessities provides diapers at no charge to agencies who distributes them to families in need.

“New Life Necessities Diaper Bank has distributed over 5,000 diapers to almost 300 families in just the last four months that we’ve been open,” says Erica Strother, Director of New Life Necessities. “Diaper need is a basic need for babies just like food, clothing and shelter, yet there is very little assistance. Both the parents and the children suffer emotionally and physically,” said Strother.

“We are excited to partner with Erica and the Diaper Bank for the remainder of our 2013 regular season home schedule,” says Jeremy Taylor, Assistant General Manger of the Power. “Since the opening of Appalachian Power Park in 2005, the West Virginia Power has, and always will be, a community driven organization and we are more than thrilled to be able to help with the tremendous need for diapers in this community.”

With every package of diapers donated at the West Virginia Power Box Office on Morris Street you will receive two free General Admission tickets to that night’s game or an upcoming 2013 regular season game of your choice. Your donations may be dropped off at the Box Office.

Manchester Goes Back to School

Fisher Cats hosting free school supply event

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation are partnering again with Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum to present Manchester Goes Back to School 2013 on Wednesday, August 14, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The back-to-school program, in its second year, will provide free school supplies to thousands of Manchester families heading back to school this fall.

“A year ago, this was a new idea to provide a positive start for families heading into the new school year,” said Art Solomon, Fisher Cats owner and chairman of the Fisher Cats Foundation board. “Because of the overwhelming gratitude and success of last year’s event, we couldn’t be more proud to team up with our partners to be able to help even more families this year.”

In the initial Manchester Goes Back to School event last summer, approximately 3,000 students received new school supplies, purchased and donated by members of Manchester Christian Church. This year, the Church is working to fill 4,000 red drawstring backpacks, which were donated by Delete Blood Cancer.

“We have an amazing opportunity to come together as a church and show the Manchester area how much we love to care about our community,” said Bo Chancey, Senior Pastor at Manchester Christian Church. “At Manchester Christian Church we pray for One daily, asking God to give us each one person to share His love with. Providing 4,000 bags of school supplies to our community is just one way we can share that love.”

“This is such a generous and beneficial event for our students as they enter a new school year,” said new Manchester Superintendent Dr. Debra Livingston. “Being new to this district, I am impressed by the community spirit of the Fisher Cats, Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum to host such an amazing event. This is a great steppingstone for a successful academic year.”

“It’s wonderful that for the second year in a row the Fisher Cats, Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum have stepped up to provide Manchester students with school supplies,” said Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas. “The back-to-school program shows Queen City residents what great community partners we have within our City limits. Again, we thank the Fisher Cats, Manchester Christian Church, Queen City Paint, and the Ted Williams Museum for providing these students with supplies for the 2013/2014 school year.”

In addition to serving as a school supply pick-up, several community groups will be on hand to make it a fun event for families. Among the agencies that will be at the event are:

  • Manchester Health Department – Dental Van to provide information to families about the city’s school-based oral health program. The agency will also have nurses and staff available to answer questions about immunizations, healthy homes, and other services offered by the department.
  • Easter Seals NH Child Development Center and Family Resource Center – Face painting
  • Manchester Foundation for Education featuring free spins on the Fisher Cats’ Prize Wheel
  • Manchester Community Health Center – Kids games, coloring pages, raffles, and free haircuts
  • Stonyfield Farms – Organic Yogurt sampling
  • Kayem – Free Kayem Franks for kids
  • Lens Doctors – Free Vision Screenings
  • Lil’ Iguana’s Children’s Safety Foundation – Fun & Games
  • And…More!

The Fisher Cats are inviting the community to join this important program. While the members of Manchester Christian Church have generously provided the majority of the school supplies, additional funds are needed to fully satisfy the expected need for supplies. Community members may also volunteer to provide healthy refreshments and assist in the coordination and distribution of supplies at the event.

Additional funds and undistributed school supplies will be used to provide supplies to Manchester schools throughout the academic year.

The Fisher Cats are currently on a six-game road trip, but will return to Manchester on Tuesday, August 6 to begin a six-game homestand. The stand features three Atlas Fireworks shows, two giveaways, and the final splash day of the year.
