Kia Country Pink in the Park This Saturday

Savannah-Sand-GnatsOn Saturday, May 17, the Savannah Sand Gnats will join forces with Kia Country of Savannah and Susan G. Komen For the Cure Coastal Georgia Affiliate to bring awareness to breast cancer education and research.

“Pink in the Park is one of the most emotional nights of the season,” said team president, John Katz. “We celebrate the Survivors, remember those that lost the fight, and reinforce the message that early detection is critical.”

Susan-G.-KomenAs in years past, Sand Gnats players and coaches will take the field in special pink jerseys. Throughout the game, fans are encouraged to bid on each jersey. After the game, the highest bidders will be presented with their jersey by their respective player or coach.

All proceeds from the pink jersey auction go directly to Susan G. Komen For the Cure Coastal Georgia Affiliate.

“It is through the generous support of Kia Country of Savannah that provides the opportunity for us to donate 100% of the proceeds from the Jersey Auction to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Coastal Georgia Affiliate,” added Katz.

Any breast cancer survivors who participated in the most recent Race for the Cure on April 12, are asked to wear their race t-shirt for free admission to the baseball game. Rome Native Commissioned on Education Day May 13

John Michael Howard is a native to Rome, GA and is the son of David Carlton Howard and Sylvia Ann Howard. Michael is a 2014 graduate of Berry College with a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Economics. Upon graduation, Michael will be commissioned as a Marine Second Lieutenant through the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leader’s Class. Second Lieutenant Howard’s next assignment will be The Basic School in Quantico, VA.

The Rome Braves take on the Asheville Tourists on May 13th at 10:30am.

Charleston-RiverDogsThere aren’t many things more American than baseball, cold beer, and our Military. That trio will come together in a big way this year as the Charleston RiverDogs and Palmetto Brewery have partnered to help raise funds for military themed charity Operation Homefront.

The Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees will be the first venue in Charleston to sell Homefront IPA, and all proceeds benefit Operation Homefront. The RiverDogs will sell this special beer with the slogan “Hops for Heroes” during their home game against the Asheville Tourists on Thursday, May 29 to coincide with Military Appreciation Night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Operation-HomefrontHomefront IPA was developed in 2011 by Fremont Brewing Company of Seattle, Wash., and Center of the Universe Brewing Company of Ashland, Va., in order to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront.

Aged on Louisville Slugger maple bats, this specially-made craft beer does more than just quench one’s thirst as it improves the lives of our soldiers. Homefront IPA is a unique charity beer in that 100 percent of the proceeds are donated to Operation Homefront. One of the solid Maple Bats will be auctioned off during the game to raise money as well.

“We feel certain that our fans that enjoy a craft beer will certainly enjoy Homefront IPA while assisting our military troops and their families,” said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. “We’re proud to have first rights and to be the only site in the state of South Carolina to get this beer.”

“Palmetto Brewing Company is honored to support this very worthy cause with the Charleston RiverDogs,” said Ed Falkenstein, Founder, Palmetto Brewing Company. “We recognize the service of our men and women in the Armed Forces and respect the sacrifice they and their families make every day. Donating 100 percent of our proceeds to this project is a small acknowledgment. Enjoy a Homefront IPA at the ballpark with food and friends.”

Palmetto Brewing, located in downtown Charleston, is one of only two Southeastern distributors (Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Fla. is the other) that dispense Homefront IPA. Other providers include Center of the Universe Brewing Company of Ashland, Va.; Fremont Brewing Company of Seattle, Wash.; Sly Fox of Pottstown, Pa.; Perennial Artisan Ales of St. Louis, Mo.; Saint Arnold Brewing Company of Houston; Left Hand Brewing Company of Longmont, Co.; Stone Brewing Company of Escondido, Calif.; and Maui Brewing Company of Lahaina, Hi.

Operation Homefront is a nonprofit organization that provides emergency assistance for American military troops, the families they leave behind, and wounded servicemen when they return home. The organization raises funds to provide emergency, financial, and morale assistance to families while troops are participating in a tour of duty. Since its creation in 2002 Operation Homefront has met over 741,000 needs of military families and military personnel returning from duty.

Operation Homefront was developed to support the families of deployed service members immediately following 9/11. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, the organization currently provides services to military families across the nation with 23 locations serving 43 states. The national office handles cases in states that do not have their own local offices. The majority of its clients are the lowest-paid service members, the E-1 through E-6 enlisted ranks.

The RiverDogs are currently home through Friday evening hosting the Savannah Sand Gnats tonight and the Hickory Crawdads for three games beginning Wednesday night. Drive Business Downtown on Tuesday

Greenville-DriveOn Tuesday, May 13th, the Greenville Drive will host the 4th annual Drive Business Downtown game presented by Elliott Davis. First pitch for the Drive game against the West Virginia Power is at 2:05.

Drive Business Downtown is a celebration in and about the heart of Greenville. Attendees will be able to enjoy the game with co-workers, network with downtown business associates, entertain clients and prospects, and watch company execs compete in on-field games.

Harvest-Hope-Food-BankHarvest Hope Food Bank will serve as this year’s Drive Business Downtown Charity, and each booster company attending the game is spearheading a fundraising effort to help raise money for Harvest Hope. Bees Partner with Deseret News on Special Educational Section in Print on May 13

Salt-Lake-BeesThe Salt Lake Bees and the Deseret News’ Newspapers in Education program are once again teaming up on a Classroom Connections publication to encourage local youth to spend time reading this summer. The special section, titled “Read Today with the Bees,” will be distributed to nearly 300 local schools and will run online and within the Deseret News print edition tomorrow, May 13.

The 12-page spread features an inside look at how Bees players make time for reading, helpful tips for parents, great book recommendations and games complete with prizes in an effort to encourage boys and girls to log minutes reading this summer. Participating schools will also have access to an interactive electronic version of the section, enabling students to learn more about each Bees player.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Salt Lake Bees to promote a love of reading among the youth in our community,” said Paul Edwards, editor of the Deseret News. “Bees games are a fun, family-friendly summer pastime and we appreciate how much the team gives back to our community.”

This marks the second consecutive year that the Bees and the Deseret News have collaborated on the Newspapers in Education program as part of a shared commitment to education. BOGG to be honored at Fifth Third Field on May 9

Dayton-DragonsVectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host Jason Barton and Jason Johnston during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Fort Wayne Tincaps at Fifth Third Field.

The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor 35 “All-Stars”-anyone from firefighters to first responders, non-profit organizations to Good Samaritans-and their families with a VIP treatment at a Dragons game in recognition of their service.

Jason and Jason’s Story

Jason Barton and Jason Johnston met several years ago at their church leading a small group of high school students together and became fast friends. When searching for a place in Miamisburg to serve the community with their small group, they discovered a lot of need and not enough being done to meet the need. The two friends decided to do something about it.

“It was just something that was on my heart,” said Barton. “Anytime we go out with friends or family, it is always over a meal. And there are a lot of hungry people in our community. The best way to get out and reach them is to feed them.”

BOGG-MinistriesThey both left their full time jobs and founded BOGG (Because of God’s Grace) Ministries in 2010, feeding about four families a week. Barton and Johnston, working unpaid for the first 18 months of BOGG, would go to each family’s house, have dinner, and provide them with groceries. The ministry rapidly grew and within seven months, BOGG was reaching 35 families. The next step for BOGG was mobile meals

Mobile meals is a system BOGG Ministries uses to reach the eight communities they now serve. They visit each area once a month with their mobile food pantry, fire up a grill, have a meal with the families, and provide groceries for one to two weeks.

“In 2013, we provided just under 250,000 meals,” Johnston explained. “Currently we are providing food for 1,500-1,800 people a month. It’s not just about the food though. Relationships are key. It is about being compassionate with our neighbors.”

For giving back selflessly to the community they are a part of, Barton and Johnston have been selected as Dragons Community All-Stars. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

Loons, MBF Team Up For Summer Baseball Camps

Great-Lakes-LoonsThe Michigan Baseball Foundation is pleased to announce the dates of this season’s Loons Summer Baseball Camps – presented by CherryBerry – at Dow Diamond. The first two-day camp will be held June 19-20.

The camps will pair participants with professional players and coaches from the Great Lakes Loons in a strong learning environment. Loons manager Bill Haselman will serve as Camp Director.

Campers will learn various aspects of hitting, throwing, fielding and pitching while being instructed in the characteristics that define successful baseball players. The drills taught will be the same ones utilized by the coaches and player personnel of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Great Lakes Loons.

Loons Summer Baseball Camp Dates:
June 19 & 20 (ages 7-12) • July 16 & 17 (ages 7-12)

Camp instruction will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day. Participants will also receive a camp t-shirt and two tickets to a Loons game that will take place following the second day of instruction, as well as a CherryBerry coupon. All campers will be invited on the field for special pre-game recognition.

Each two-day Loons Summer Baseball Camp is $90 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Michigan Baseball Foundation. A portion of the entry fee is tax deductible.

Suns set baseball camp for June 19-20

Jacksonville-SunsArea kids can learn baseball skills from some of the top players in the Miami Marlins organization as the Jacksonville Suns sets its annual camp for June 19-20 at Bragan Field.

The two-day camp will feature the Suns manager Andy Barkett and his staff with several Suns players teaching all aspects of the game of baseball.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day for kids ages 7-12. Campers will receive a hat, lunch and a ticket to a Suns game for only $85 dollars (plus tax) during the two days of instruction. Space is limited for the camp.

The Dayton Dragons will host the second annual Girl Scout Overnighter at Fifth Third Field. Girl Scouts from Western Ohio will place their tents at Fifth Third Field, and camp out for the night. The Scouts will be offered a snack with the opportunity to watch a movie on the video board before they go to sleep. In the morning, the Dragons will provide breakfast for the Scouts at 7:00 a.m.

Girl_ScoutsOver 400 Scouts from the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio will be part of the overnighter. Parents and families are welcomed and encouraged to join their Scouts at the overnighter.

Swing For A Cure Will Have City Stadium Seeing Pink

Lynchburg-HillcatsThe Hillcats will have everyone wearing pink on Saturday, May 17th will the 8th Annual “Swing For A Cure” Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Centra’s Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center! Proceeds from this event will benefit the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation.

General admission tickets for the 6:05pm game against the Wilmington Blue Rocks will be $10, with a portion of each ticket being donated to the fight against cancer. 4th Annual Cutters 5K Run to Benefit CDC

Williamsport-CrosscuttersThe Williamsport Crosscutters, in partnership with the Children’s Development Center, will be holding the 4th Annual Cutters 5K on Saturday, June 28th at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field.

The race, through Williamsport’s West End, begins at 9am with registration open at 8am. The course has runners starting outside the ballpark entrance with the final sprint inside the stadium finishing at home plate. Both runners and walkers are encouraged to take part in the event.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s event attracted over 200 participants while raising over $10,000 for the CDC.

CDC-Childrens-Development-Center“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” stated Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female runners will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC again on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi.

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 29th Crosscutters vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers game at 7:05pm. Dragons to Participate in Great American Cleanup

May 10th Event is Part of the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful program

Dayton-DragonsAs part of the Great American Cleanup initiative, the Dayton Dragons and the Montgomery County Environmental Services will host a cleanup event on May 10th from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at 624 Xenia Avenue in Dayton (East End Community Services). Dragons players, staff members, Heater, and the Dragons Green Team will pitch in to clean the surrounding neighborhood along with volunteers who can register at daytondragons.com/cleanup or by calling Nisha Jaga at (937) 228-2287 ext. 115.

The Dragons event is one component of the Great American Cleanup initiative and the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful program. It is a volunteer program for individuals or groups and a great way to give back to the community.

Montgomery-County-OH“We take a tremendous pride in the upkeep of Fifth Third Field,” Dragons President Robert Murphy said. “The Great American Cleanup is a great way for us to get out in the community and help with the upkeep of the city that surrounds us.”

All participating volunteers in the Dragons cleanup event will receive a Dragons hat and will be entered into a drawing for other great Dragons prizes.

About the Great American Cleanup

The Great American Cleanup is the largest organized volunteer litter cleanup and community improvement program in the country. This long standing Keep America Beautiful event, which runs annually from March 1 until May 31, is sponsored locally by the Keep Montgomery County Beautiful (KMCB) program. Keep Montgomery County Beautiful provides volunteers with cleanup supplies and can assist with litter disposal. KMCB can also help coordinate cleanup events and provide other resources for large scale community projects. Teacher Appreciation Night May 7

Lexington-Legends-2013The Lexington Legends will say thanks to educators with a Teacher Appreciation Night Wednesday, May 7. The Legends take on the Asheville Tourists at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
