Bob Ross Night 4.0, Vaccine Drive, Fireworks part of ‘Tugas season-ending homestand

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Daytona Tortugas open their final homestand of the 2021 regular season on Tuesday, August 31, against the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, the Single-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. Among the highlights are a Bob Ross Night 4.0 extravaganza on Saturday, a Vaccination Drive on Wednesday, and the final Postgame Fireworks show of the campaign on Friday.

The Tortugas open up the set on Tuesday, August 31, with a Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Radiology Associates Imaging. Daytona players and coaches will don special pink-tinted uniforms to mark the occasion, as the organization raises money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Silver Sluggers Night — the best club in baseball for fans 60-and-over — presented by Conviva Cares Solutions will also be a part of the festivities. As a part of Silver Sluggers Night, fans can enjoy Michelob Ultra drafts for $2.50. The first pitch of that night and all weekday games are set for 7:05 p.m. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

The Tortugas, in conjunction with the Volusia County Health Department, will do their part in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic by holding a Vaccination Drive from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1. In the same token, charity remains a focal point for the organization with a Wishful Wednesday presented by VyStar Credit Union. The Tortugas partner with a local non-profit organization — this week it will be the Beacon Center — to swell up donations and awareness for a worthy cause. Starting at just $14, patrons will be able to enjoy all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and popcorn thanks to a Belly Buster Wednesday presented by Marco’s Pizza. The biggest party in Central Florida returns for one last hurrah in 2021 at the oldest ballpark in Minor League Baseball on September 2 courtesy of a Bud Light Thirsty Thursday. All those in attendance can beat the heat with fountain drinks and draft beers starting at as low as $1.

We recognize the selflessness of those who have aided others during the pandemic as a part of our second First Responders and Healthcare Heroes Appreciation Night on Friday, September 3. It will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Kona Brewing Company. Fans will be able to enjoy free tastings of a selection of Kona Brewing draft beers from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Additionally, patrons will be able to enjoy Kona Brewing Company draft beers at a reduced price at all our beer stands throughout the evening. “The Best Dressed Team in Baseball” series continues all weekend as Tortugas players and coaches will don special No. 9 uniforms in honor of the ballpark’s namesake, Jackie Robinson. The best promotion in baseball returns to Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday, September 4, with Bob Ross Night 4.0. Fans are advised to get to the ballpark early, as the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a limited edition Paint-Your-Own Bob Ross Bobblehead presented by Radiology Associates Imaging. A painting station for fans to get a head start on personalizing their bobbleheads will be set up at the Turtle’s Nest along the first-base line. Fans will also be able to enjoy special food items at the concession stands featuring a “Paint Palette Box” with funnel fries, marshmallows, M & M’s, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch drizzled with chocolate syrup. It will also be a Copa de la Diversión celebration with special uniforms for players and coaches as a part of the weekend-long “Best Dressed Team in Baseball” series.

The Tortugas close out the home schedule with a 5:35 p.m. first pitch on Sunday, September 5, and the annual Scout Night at The Jack. Boys and Girl Scouts and their families will be able to enjoy discounted tickets to that evening’s contest. It will also be another Bark in the Park Night with fans being able to purchase a “pooch pass” for $2 at the box office so their furry four-legged friend can enjoy one last nine-inning vacation on the year, as well. We celebrate our beloved mascot Shelldon’s birthday on a Tiny ‘Tugas Night in Daytona Beach with special games and activities for all members of the best kids club in Volusia County. Woodpeckers Alzheimer’s Jersey Auction Raises $8,051.41 For Charity

 

On Saturday, August 7th, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers might have looked unrecognizable, even to the most adoring fans. The Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros traded its signature red, gray and black colors for purple to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease. The event, Alzheimer’s Awareness Night, raised $8,051.41 through both an in-person and online auction of the game-worn purple jerseys seen on-field that evening. Proceeds from the jersey auction directly benefitted the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern North Carolina. The game’s festivities were presented by long-time partner McKee Homes and drew over 4,000 fans to Segra Stadium.

The Woodpeckers, sporting custom purple jerseys with the Alzheimer’s Association logo, beat the Fredericksburg Nationals 6-4. The first 1,200 fans through the gates also received a purple hat. Historically, the color purple has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease because of the combination of the calm stability of blue and the passionate energy of red.

“The fight to end Alzheimer’s has enlisted so many in our local communities,’ says Lisa Roberts, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter. “Here in Fayetteville, longtime partners like McKee Homes and growing relationships like ours with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers are shining examples of those in the fight. BlueClaws to Honor Victims of 9/11 Attacks at September 11th Game

 

JERSEY SHORE, NJ – The BlueClaws will honor the victims of the September 11th attacks as part of their game on 9/11’s 20th anniversary, the team announced today.

“We honor those that lost their lives in the terrorist attacks 20 years ago,” said BlueClaws Team President Joe Ricciutti. “They will not be forgotten and we will honor their memories this year on the anniversary of that tragic day.”

Before the game, the BlueClaws will host a special walk on the field. The total length of the walk will be 2,730 feet, the combined height of each tower. During the walk, participants will have the opportunity to hold up a sign that honors either a specific victim among their friends or family members, or a general sign honoring first responders or others that lost their lives. These cards will also be used during a ceremony between innings later in the game.

There will be additional pre-game ceremonies as well. Ron Brooks, a top local performer, will sing the National Anthem before the game and God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch.

Those that lost friends and/or loved ones on that day that would like to participate in an on-field ceremony before the game are encouraged to email [email protected].

After the game, the BlueClaws will have a patriotic fireworks show, with each firework dedicated in memory of the brave we lost that day. During the show, the names of each victim from the Jersey Shore will be scrolled on the video board..

Adrianne Ayers to Celebrate “Home Run For Life” with OKC Dodgers and INTEGRIS Health Saturday

 

Oklahoma City — The Oklahoma City Dodgers and INTEGRIS Health continue the “Home Run For Life” series Saturday by honoring Adrianne Ayers of Midwest City, Okla., during the Dodgers’ 7:05 p.m. game against the Las Vegas Aviators at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Ayers, a registered nurse, fell ill with the flu in February 2018. Several days later her health spiraled to the point where one of her children had to call 911 and Ayers was taken to the hospital.

“They told us had he not called 911, I might not have made it through the night,” Ayers recalled.

In addition to flu, Ayers had developed pneumonia and strep throat so severe that her body went septic. She developed necrotizing pneumonia, a severe complication from a bacterial lung infection that can cause lung tissue damage. Her lungs, heart and kidneys were all shutting down.

It was determined that extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, known as ECMO, was necessary for Ayers’ survival and she was transferred to INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, which specializes in ECMO, to receive the last-resort, lifesaving treatment. ECMO provides both cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and/or lungs are so severely diseased or damaged that they can no longer serve their function. The goal is to allow the heart or lungs to rest and recover while the machine does all the work.

“What it does is takes the blood out of the body on one side and puts oxygen into it and then flows back into your body through different tubes,” Ayers said. “It’s almost like dialysis — in one side and out the other.”

Ayers ended up on ECMO for an INTEGRIS Health record 119 days — just one piece of the extensive multi-disciplinary care she received during her five months in the hospital.

“Home Run For Life” recognizes individuals in the Oklahoma City community who have overcome a significant medical event with the help of their families, physicians and health care professionals. To symbolize the end of their battle against adversity, honorees take a prerecorded home run “lap” around the bases during an in-game ceremony.

“’Home Run For Life’ allows us to uniquely recognize some amazing Oklahomans who have endured significant health challenges,” OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. “Each month during the baseball season, we are proud to partner with INTEGRIS Health to honor the perseverance and courage displayed by these individuals and to help inspire others with their incredible stories.”

Throughout her five months at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, Ayers was also on a ventilator, had a tracheostomy and was on dialysis in addition to ECMO. There was talk of potential double kidney and lung transplants for her.

Ayers was enrolled in the ATHOS 3 Expanded Access Protocol for Giapreza clinical trial for a medication that regulates blood pressure, becoming one of 10 patients in the world to have received the therapy while on ECMO at the time. She also became the first patient in the OKC area to benefit from an off-label use of Olympus Spiration endobronchial valves, which were inserted into her lungs, opening breathing passageways like they would an artery during a cardiac procedure.

One special moment especially stands out in Ayers’ mind to describe the depth and range of care she received at INTEGRIS Health.

“The doctors and nurses at INTEGRIS are amazing. They are saints,” she said. “There was one point where I was tired and I was tired of fighting and I was tired of everything going on and (one of the doctors) took me outside just to get some vitamin D. Anytime they took me anywhere in the hospital it was a huge ordeal because I had the ECMO machine and dialysis and the vent and the chair, so it was like a small parade going down the hallway.

“Just for a doctor to do that, I can’t say enough good things about them…They are just amazing people.”

Ayers was released from the hospital in July 2018 and still undergoes frequent checkups. There is a possibility in the future she will need a lung transplant, but says she is doing well now. Ayers, 44, returned to work as a RN at St. Anthony in April 2021 and said she brings a new perspective with her to work after all she has been through.

“I have always been a patient person with patients and am even more so now,” she said. “I can’t even explain it. It’s like you walk into a room and see both points of view at the same time. You can empathize even small things, like tape coming off an IV. After it’s done 100 times, that hurts.

“It’s weird, but I am thankful for everything I have been through because I think it makes me relate to patients better.”

Drive, Prisma Partner on Next COVID-19 Vaccination Event September 1

 

The Greenville Drive, in partnership with Prisma Health, are set to host the latest COVID-19 vaccination event at Fluor Field Wednesday, September 1st as part of the Drive’s game against the Asheville Tourists. This will be the 5th vaccination event hosted at Fluor Field this season as the Drive, together with their long-time partner Prisma Health, set out to educate and protect the community from the ongoing challenges brought about by COVID-19.

Prisma will be administering the now FDA approved Pfizer vaccine.

With virus variants emerging and COVID once again surging in the community, getting vaccinated is more important than ever for the health & safety of our community.

The latest vaccination event at Fluor Field will take place from 6-8pm in the Power Alley hospitality area of the ballpark, directly inside the Main Street entrance to the stadium. No appointments are needed; vaccinations will be offered on a walk-up basis and administered by officials with Prisma Health. The Pfizer vaccine, which is now fully approved by the FDA, will be administered free of charge; those 12 years of age or older, needing their first or second dose, will be eligible. For those needing their second dose, it must be a minimum of three weeks since their first dose, but no later than six weeks.

Gwinnett Stripers Award $2,500 August Grant to Mentor Me North Georgia

 

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Gwinnett Stripers, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves Foundation, have awarded their $2,500 August grant to Mentor Me North Georgia.

Mentor Me North Georgia is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the diverse needs of children and youth, ages 6 to 17, in Forsyth County since 2002. Their mission is to serve school-age children and youth in need of positive role models, to help them grow into healthy and productive members of our society and community.

The Stripers selected Mentor Me North Georgia to receive the August “Youth Programs” themed grant. The $2,500 grant will be utilized by the organization to expand its Mentoring After School (MAS) program at elementary schools in North Georgia.

“Mentoring is reciprocal and a collaborative effort that provides youth with character development, drives personal growth, and develops a skill set that gives every child the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Kerry Carithers, Executive Director of Mentor Me North Georgia. “Thank you to the Gwinnett Stripers and the Atlanta Braves Foundation for their generous support. The grant will allow our organization to expand our outreach by serving more youth in our Mentoring After School (MAS) program this Fall.”

Representatives from Mentor Me North Georgia received the grant from the Stripers on August 13.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City Dodgers players and coaches will wear special pink jerseys and hats that will be auctioned off to benefit Susan G. Komen Oklahoma as the Dodgers and MidFirst Bank team up to “Pack the Park Pink” Friday night.

The Dodgers will take the field at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. Friday against the Las Vegas Aviators and fans can bid on their game-worn pink jerseys and hats via the DASH Auction app, which is available for free via the App Store and Google Play Store.

The Winston-Salem Dash are teaming up with Salem One for a Hometown Heroes USA event at Truist Stadium on Saturday, September 11 to honor all service members and first responders (active and retired). The Dash will take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, at 6:00 p.m.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Daytona Tortugas continue their two-week homestand at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with more fun and excitement over six games against the Palm Beach Cardinals, Low-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, on Tuesday, August 17. Among the highlights are a Thirsty Thursday, Margaritaville Night on Saturday, and a First Responders and Healthcare Heroe Appreciation Night on Friday.

The Tortugas open up the set on Tuesday, August 17, with a Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Radiology Associates Imaging. Daytona players and coaches will don special pink-tinted uniforms to mark the occasion, as the organization looks to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Silver Sluggers Night — the best club in baseball for fans 60-and-over — presented by Conviva Cares Solutions will also be a part of the festivities. As a part of Silver Sluggers Night, fans can enjoy Michelob Ultra drafts for $2.50. The first pitch of that night and all weekday games are set for 7:05 p.m. Gates will open at 6 p.m.

Charity remains a focal point for the organization with a Wishful Wednesday presented by VyStar Credit Union on August 18. The Tortugas partner with a local non-profit organization to swell up donations and awareness for a worthy cause. Starting at just $14, patrons will be able to enjoy all-you-can-eat hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, and popcorn thanks to a Belly Buster Wednesday presented by Marco’s Pizza. Courtesy of Landshark, souvenir cup holders will also be able to enjoy refills at concession stands for just $3.

The biggest party in Central Florida returns to the oldest ballpark in Minor League Baseball on August 19 courtesy of a Thirsty Thursday presented by Bud Light. All those in attendance can beat the heat with fountain drinks and draft beers starting at as low as $1.

We recognize the selflessness of those who have aided others during the pandemic as a part of our First Responders and Healthcare Heroes Appreciation Night on Friday, August 20. It will be another Friday Night Happy Hour presented by Ormond Brewing Company and Cutwater Spirits. Fans will be able to enjoy free tastings of a selection of Ormond Brewing draft beers and Cutwater Spirits from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Additionally, patrons will be able to enjoy Ormond Brewing Company draft beers and Cutwater Spirits at a reduced price at all our beer stands throughout the evening.

The clock will be frozen at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 21, as the Tortugas host their annual Margaritaville Night bash. As a part of the Best Dressed Team in Baseball series, Daytona players and coaches will sport special uniforms to mark the occasion. Fans are encouraged to dress in style and enjoy “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and margarita specials at the concession and bars all evening long.

The Tortugas get dressed up in their Sunday best to close out the homestand on Sunday, August 22. The Best Dressed Team in Baseball series squeezes into Sunday, as Daytona players and coaches will don special tuxedo-themed uniforms. It will also be a Bark in the Park and Tiny ‘Tugas Night. For just $2, fans can purchase a “pooch pass” so their four-legged friend can enjoy a nine-inning vacation, as well. Additionally, there will be activities for all Tiny ‘Tugas members who come out to the ballpark, including Running the Bases after the game. It will also be the Tortugas’ Yappy Hours with 16 oz. Bud Light Seltzer and Michelob Ultra Organic Seltzer cans on sale for $4. The series finale gets underway at 5:35 p.m.and gates open at 4:30 p.m.

Springfield Cardinals specialty ‘City Jersey’ announced for August 20-21 at Hammons Field

 

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Springfield Cardinals are excited to announce the team’s first City Jersey, featuring the Springfield Identity Project/Springfield Flag Movement flag design. These brand new specialty uniforms will be worn by the Cardinals at Hammons Field on Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21, and will bring the Cardinals closer to the city we love than ever before.

While the specialty jersey and jersey auction have been scheduled for several months, it happens to coincide with the City of Springfield gathering public input on a potential new flag. Citizens can visit https://flag.questionpro.com/ to comment and/or submit flag designs through August 18.

Combining the unmistakable Cardinals identity on the chest and sleeves with the design of the proposed new flag itself, the white stripe on the uniform represents both the Ozark Plateau on which Springfield rests as well as the world-famous Route 66, which was born here in Springfield. The three stars represented Innovative Spirit, Connection with Nature and Ozarks Culture. The “Compass Crown” combines two core elements of our city’s identity, with the compass representing our role as a crossroads to the nation and the crown paying homage to our over century-old moniker as the “Queen City of the Ozarks.” On either side of the crown and perched on the white stripe are a pair of inward facing Cardinals. The jersey’s left sleeve features a single Bird-on-the-Bat with the Springfield script. The right sleeve features the interlocking “SGF,” first introduced in 2019 on a limited-release off-field cap. This will be the debut of the interlocking “SGF” logo on a uniform.

The jerseys will be auctioned off on the LiveSource App and Livesourceapp.com beginning when gates open on Friday, August 20 and ending at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 21. Proceeds will benefit the Sertoma Club of Springfield—a non-profit organization chartered in 1941 whose primary focus is to raise money for children charities in our local area.

Friday, August 20 is the Mercy Crossbody Purse Giveaway for 2,000 fans and Girl Power Friday Fireworks. Gates open at 6:05 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. when the Cardinals face the Wichita Wind Surge (AA, Twins).

Dragons to Recognize “Community All-Stars” Recipient During Game on August 17

 

*Dayton, Ohio *— The Dayton Dragons will recognize The Hope Center for Families as a “Community All-Stars” recipient during a special inning break of the Dragons game on Tuesday, August 17 against the Lake County Captains at Day Air Ballpark. The game will start at 7:05 p.m. In addition, half of the 50/50 proceeds will be donated to The Hope Center for Families.

The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley. They could be firefighters or police officers, doctors or good Samaritans. It could be a first responder or a volunteer. The Dragons are going to highlight these Community All-Stars at games all summer long.

More than half of children in the City of Dayton live below the poverty level. The statistics show that when those children grow up, they are likely to continue the poverty cycle to their children as well. The “poverty cycle” often persists across multiple generations unless that cycle is interrupted through outside intervention.

The Hope Center for Families was developed to interfere with the poverty cycle in Northwest Dayton, giving families the support and hope needed to grow and advance into sustainable living wages.

The Hope Center for Families is an initiative by the Omega Community Development Corporation that focuses on the two-generation model – a model that targets low-income children and their parents simultaneously. The center will focus on the three main factors that aid in the reduction of poverty through workforce, health, and educational development.

Mini University, Sinclair Community College, and Dayton Children’s Hospital will have a significant presence within the Hope Center. Mini University will operate an early learning program within the center. Sinclair Community College will offer certificate programs for adults to further their education, allowing them to gain higher wages. Dayton Children’s Hospital will aid in childcare.

The Center plans to start transforming the lives of the people of Northwest Dayton as soon as the door open in Fall 2021.

Vanessa Ward, Omega Community Development Corporation president, said her dream once the center is open would be that when people walk in, they will be greeted by people that care.
