2022 RailRiders University Community Series Announced



MOOSIC, PA (March 9, 2022) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are pleased to announce the schedule for the Sixth Annual RailRiders University Community Series, presented by Geisinger. Each spring, the RailRiders welcome local high school and special needs teams onto PNC Field to showcase their talents.

April 3 – 1:00 P.M. – The West Scranton Invaders, managed by Brian Minich, take on the crosstown-rival Scranton Knights, managed by Jamie Higgins.

April 5 – 4:30 P.M. – The Scranton Knights will be back at PNC Field to take on District 2-5A Champions Abington Heights Comets, led by manager Billy Zalewski.

April 6- 4:30 P.M. – Division 3 powerhouses square off against each other as the Mid Valley Spartans, managed by Ryan Kropa, take on the Holy Cross Crusaders, managed by Sandy Menichetti.

April 8 – 4:30 P.M. – Two perennial conference champions battle as the North Pocono Trojans, skippered by Brian Jardine, host the Holy Redeemer Royals, managed by Chris Ristick.

April 9 – 12:30 P.M. – We welcome two new teams to PNC Field as District 4’s Athens Area Wildcats, managed by Charles Havens, play the Sayre Redskins, managed by Jamie VanDuzer.

April 18 – 4:30 P.M. – One of the area’s biggest rivalries hits the diamond as the Valley View Cougars, managed by Jason Munley, take on Abington Heights.

May 1 – TBD – After the Railriders play Lehigh Valley, come and catch a Wyoming Valley Conference rivalry game with District 2-6A Champs. The Hazleton Area Cougars, managed by Russ Canzler, play the Crestwood Comets, led by Sean Foley.

May 5 – 6:30 P.M. – District 11 rivals meet at PNC Field as the Pocono Mountain East Cardinals, skippered by Matt DelGuidice, host the Stroudsburg Mountaineers, managed by Phil Stokes.

May 7 – 1:00 P.M. – DOUBLEHEADER- District 2- 6A champion Hazleton Area plays 6A State Champions La Salle College High School, managed by Kyle Werman. Game two features the District 2-AA Champion Riverside Vikings, managed by Sean Hughes, against the Dunmore Bucks, managed by Sid Hallinan.

There is no parking or admission fee for any of the 2022 RailRiders University Community Series games.

The RailRiders are also proud to host the Wyoming Valley Challenger League as part of the Community Series on May 15, June 5, 19 and July 17.

RailRiders University is offering Spring Training Clinics in April. The clinics run from 9-11 A.M on April 3 and 24. One clinic session is $60.00, but participants can do both dates for $110.00 and each includes tickets for a 2022 RailRiders game and a clinic t-shirt. The RailRiders University Spring Training Clinics staff now includes former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ray Black, as well as high school and college coaches and players. Wind Surge Re-launches Reading Program in Partnership with Credit Union of America

The Wind Surge are excited to finally relaunch the Wichita Wind Surge Reading Program, in partnership with Credit Union of America.

The mission of the four-week reading program is to improve literacy while rewarding students for making time outside of the classroom to read. Sports promote health through physical activities, the brain is a muscle that needs exercise. Reading stimulates language skills and helps them to engage better with peers and educators.

We love to see children who participate gaining rewards while goals are met. After a student meets a goal, they get a “HIT.” Each “HIT” collects new prizes from sponsors – Whole Foods, Red Robin and Chick-Fil-A. Children must complete each base goal before moving forward.

Participating schools will have the option to host a kick-off assembly. A member from the office and Windy the mascot will come and explain the program’s process while getting children excited about receiving a free ticket.

All classrooms will be given a poster to track each student’s progress throughout the program and teachers will determine each week’s reading goal to fit their own lesson plans.

There are no additional requirements, only prizes for students. Prizes will be delivered to the school by Wind Surge staff members.

“We’re just really excited to help the teachers,” Director of Fan Experience Bob Moullette said. “It’s been a long two-and-a-half years for educators. Anyway, we can incentivize the reading goals already set in the classrooms to help them out and reward all the kids to come out to the ballpark, is a win win for everyone. We’re excited to get those schools out here representing.”

The Most Improved Student program is designed to recognize those students that have shown improvement in various areas throughout the 2021-2022 school year including social, behavioral and academic categories. Students must be nominated by their teacher!

“WooSox Mentors” Meet Children Today at Worcester’s Gates Lane Elementary School

 

Club partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts and Worcester Public Schools to introduce latest community initiative.

WORCESTER, MA – The Worcester Red Sox have partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts and the Worcester Public Schools to create the “WooSox Mentors” program with children at Gates Lane Elementary School at 1238 Main Street.

The program, launched today, includes 14 WooSox Front Office members who will mentor students once a week through the school year, continuing throughout the students’ rise through the Worcester Public Schools.

“So many of us are beneficiaries of impactful mentors, and so many of us have enjoyed serving as mentors to young people,” said WooSox President Dr. Charles A. Steinberg. “We recognize and realize that a regular visit with a smile, a kind hand, and a reassuring word can help fortify the self-esteem of a child—and what an honor it is to be able to do so.”

The school counts among its alumni the City Manager of Worcester.

“Not only do I have a soft spot for Gates Lane, where I attended elementary school, I know the value a program like this can have in the development of a young person,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. “As someone who has benefited a lot from mentors, I am grateful our new neighbors, the Worcester Red Sox, are investing their time into becoming part of the fabric of our community and contributing to the growth and success of our youngest residents.”

South Bend Cubs to Offer Peanut-Free Suite on May 6

SOUTH BEND, IN – On Friday, May 6, the South Bend Cubs will provide a peanut-free indoor suite for fans who are allergic to peanuts.

In conjunction with the Michiana Food Allergy Support Group, the South Bend Cubs have created a peanut-free environment for kids of all ages for the past 6 seasons. According to Erica Andert, the founder and leader of the Support Group, families come in from as far as Indianapolis and Chicago to enjoy Cubs games in a nut-free environment.

“The South Bend Cubs do a great job making sure that every inch of the suite is allergen free, we’re excited to bring families with Peanut allergies back out to Four Winds Field and experience a baseball game,” said Andert.

Approximately 85 million Americans are impacted by food allergies and intolerance, including 32 million who have a potentially life-threatening condition, according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). That number includes 5.6 million American children under the age of 18. Peanut allergies are among the most common food allergies and, leading cause for anaphylaxis which can cause death among children according to studies funded by FARE.

“We forget that peanut allergies are such a major challenge now for a lot of kids especially…and what ballpark doesn’t sell peanuts?” South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart said. “At least for that one particular day [kids with peanut allergies] can come out to Four Winds Field and know that they’re getting to experience what their friends get to experience… It gives you the sense that this is something really good that we’re doing, and we’re giving kids the opportunity to be a kid that day.”

Executive chef Scott Craig and his staff go through a rigorous quality control process to ensure that there is absolutely no contact or cross-contamination from peanuts during the food preparing process.

The Peanut-Free Suite costs $25 per person. Space is limited to the first 40 fans. Patriots And NJEA To Honor A+ Educators

 

Bridgewater, New Jersey – The Somerset Patriots, the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, have teamed up with New Jersey Education Association to honor A+ Educators.

The A+ Educator program is designed to recognize the work of teachers and education support professionals (ESPs) that provide an inclusive learning environment, engaging instruction and curriculum, encourages lifelong learning, and inspires a passion for education beyond the classroom and into the future.

The Patriots and NJEA are asking for nominations through the team’s website. Nominations will be accepted through an online entry form that will include a writeup of why teachers/ESPs should be considered for the honor. In order to be eligible, educators must work at a public school in Somerset, Middlesex, Union, Hunterdon, or Morris counties.

Nominations are now open and will end on Friday, June 10, 2022. 25 total teachers and ESPs will be selected by judges and honored on the Patriots website, social media platforms, at TD Bank Ballpark, and throughout the season. Selected educators will receive four complimentary tickets to enjoy a 2022 Patriots game.

The A+ Educator program continues the Patriots and NJEA’s partnership to honor education professionals that make a difference in the lives of their students and impact the community as a whole.

Tides Organization to Continue Youth Field Renovation Project

 

The Norfolk Tides today announced the return of The Youth Field Makeover Project, a contest in which a local youth field will be renovated by Tides groundskeepers and front office staff. This field makeover will include an upgrade to the playing surface, an improvement to existing dugouts, based on need. The recipient of the makeover will be determined by a fan vote on the Tides website in March.

“Year in and year out, this is a special project that allows our staff to give back to very deserving members of the Hampton Roads community” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “Each time we help renovate a field, we’re just thrilled to be making a difference.”

Those interested in having the Tides make over their facility should submit a picture of their field to Heather McKeating at [email protected]. Along with the photo, fans are asked to include a brief synopsis of why their league’s field should receive this enhancement. The deadline to submit this information is March 11, with online voting set to take place on the Tides website after March 14.

Since the inaugural renovation in 2012, the Tides have renovated 15 local fields: Eason’s Crossroads (Gates, NC), Ocean View Little League (Norfolk), Smithfield Recreation Association (Smithfield), Bennett’s Creek Little League (Suffolk), Phoebus Little League (Hampton), Shore Little League (Nassawadox), Cradock Little League (Portsmouth), Little Creek National (Norfolk), Gloucester Youth Baseball (Gloucester), Surry County Pony Baseball (Surry), Deer Park Youth Field (Newport News), Plaza Little League (Virginia Beach), Thalia/Malibu Baseball (Virginia Beach), Churchland Little League (Portsmouth) and Albemarle (North Carolina).

The project is made possible thanks to the Tides Youth Baseball Fund, a program established by the Tides in 1990 as a way to raise money for youth baseball and softball programs in Hampton Roads. MGM Park To Host High School Tournament On February 19

Greene County High School will host a six-team tournament on February 19 at MGM Park. The six teams will include Greene County, Pascagoula, Vancleave, Oak Grove, Sumrall and Lumberton.
The day kicks off at 11 am when Sumrall takes on Vancleave. Oak Grove will matchup against Pascagoula at approximately 2

Greene County High School will host a six-team tournament on February 19 at MGM Park. The six teams will include Greene County, Pascagoula, Vancleave, Oak Grove, Sumrall and Lumberton.

The day kicks off at 11 am when Sumrall takes on Vancleave. Oak Grove will matchup against Pascagoula at approximately 2 pm and the day draws to a close with a 5:00 pm matchup between Greene County and Lumberton.

“We put feelers out there for good programs that we had relationships with, and it has come together better in the first year than I expected,” said Greene County Head Coach Nick Chatham “We’ve got Sumrall who is a perennial powerhouse every year in 4A who played in the State Championship last year and won it the year before. Vancleave is obviously local and has a great program that won state a few years back. Oak Grove is a tradition rich baseball program and Pascagoula played for a State Championship last year. When you have good teams involved, most people want to be a part of that. And we wanted to have it at MGM Park to make it something special for those that participate.”

Tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the game at the northeast gate of MGM Park for $10 and will grant admission to all three games. The MGM Park concession stand will be open with a limited menu for the day.

The Shuckers open their seventh season on the road against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on Friday, April 8. Biloxi then returns to MGM Park for their home opener against the Mississippi Braves on Tuesday, April 12 at 6:35 pm. Shuck Nation Memberships, Flex Plans and group outings are now available for the 2022 season and individual tickets will go on sale at a later date. Registration is Open for the 2022 Meijer Baseball Academy

SOUTH BEND, IN – The Meijer Baseball Academy is back for 2022 and registration is now open. Two sessions will be held for the summer camp at Four Winds Field; the first of which will run from July 6-8 and the second from July 27-29. Both camps start on a Wednesday and end on a Friday.

“Last year we sold out the Meijer camp and this year we’re really excited to be hosting two camps,” said South Bend Cubs Assistant General Manager for Marketing and Media Chris Hagstrom-Jones. “It’s great because the campers not only have a blast but they improve their skills on the field, and the players just love being out there with them. It’s one of their favorite parts of the year.”

Over the course of the three-day camp, participants will learn fundamentals about hitting, pitching, fielding (infield and outfield), catching, and base running. Registration is open to kids ages 6-to-12. Due to the high number of participants, and to provide proper instruction, each Baseball Academy session is capped at 80 kids.

Every participant will receive a Meijer Baseball Academy t-shirt, a South Bend Cubs hat, lunch after each day of camp, and four tickets to a South Bend Cubs game. Attendees from the first camp will receive tickets for the game on July 7 and campers from the second session will receive tickets for July 28. All Meijer Baseball Academy campers will take part in a pre-game recognition on the field. The registration fee for one, three-day session is $125 per child.

Check-in for the first day (July 6 or July 27) of the session will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., with lunch at 11:50 a.m. and pickup at noon. Curve Host Teacher Appreciation Night on April 23

 

CURVE, PA – The Altoona Curve will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Night on Saturday, April 23 when the Curve host the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays) at 4:00 p.m.

Jackie Robinson Scholarship applications open for 2022 

 

PAPILLION, Neb. – Applications for the Jackie Robinson Scholarship presented by The Weitz Company are currently open and due by March 11, 2022. The Chasers Charities-Robinson Athletic Scholarship program is administered by the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Winners of the scholarship will be notified no later than April 1, 2022 and receive one $1000 scholarship that is not renewable and is to be paid directly to the student’s accredited postsecondary institution. Winners will be recognized during the Storm Chasers’ home game against the Louisville Bats on Friday, April 15, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

The scholarship recognizes the impact Jackie Robinson—the first Black player in Major League Baseball history—had on America and the legacy he left for all Americans by supporting two local Black high school athletes for their hard work, character, and motivation to make a positive impact on our local community and society.

To be eligible to apply, the student must:

  • Be a United States citizen or a permanent resident
  • Reside in one of the following counties: Sarpy, Douglas, Cass, Lancaster, Pottawattamie
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  • Be Black, male or female, and a high school student participating in athletics
  • Be a high school senior or graduate planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution

A student’s application must consist of:

  • Current, complete transcripts of grades
  • Letter of support from current supervising principal, coach, or guidance counselor
  • Statement of how and why sports have been important in your life
  • Essay answering the question: “Which athlete has inspired you and why” with examples included

Scout Night Sleepover is back at FirstEnergy Stadium!

 

(Reading, PA) –The Reading Fightin Phils invite you and your troop for our annual Scout Sleepover at FirstEnergy Stadium. Join us on Friday, August 5th for our 7:00pm game against the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies), then stick around to set up camp in the outfield and an overnight stay at the ballpark. Troops and their guardians can feel both adventurous and safe sleeping under the stars. The game will include a post-game fireworks show thanks to Erlich, “Your local pest control experts!”

In addition to seeing the exciting R-Phils action, all scouts are able to participate in a pre-game parade around the field. All scouting ranks are welcome to join us for the evening.

Scouts will have the opportunity to pitch a tent and sleep under the stars while enjoying a movie on the comfort of the FirstEnergy stadium grass. There is an additional $10.00 charge for every scout, parent or chaperone that plans to stay for the sleepover. This option also includes a hot dog and soda with this package. We ask for an adult to accompany any Scout who is under the age of 18. Please do not use stakes on the field of FirstEnergy Stadium.

Schedule for RiverDogs 2022 Youth Summer Camps Unveiled

 

Whether children have dreams of becoming a star on the field or in the kitchen, The Joe has become the place to learn valuable skills during the summer. On Wednesday, the Charleston RiverDogs announced that registration is open for a full schedule of youth baseball and culinary camps hosted by the team.

The RiverDogs will hold five baseball camps this summer, each featuring daily sessions Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The camps include stations in hitting, pitching, base running, speed and agility, warm-up and stretching, and fundamentals. Camps are open to children ages 6-13. Weekly registration is $315 per camper, while individual day sessions can also be purchased for $70 each.

Chris Singleton, the RiverDogs Director of Community Outreach and former professional baseball player, and his team will lead the quartet of camps in June, July and August. Singleton was a standout outfielder at Goose Creek High School and Charleston Southern University which led to the Chicago Cubs drafting him in 2017. He spent two seasons playing in the Cubs farm system.

“The RiverDogs have always made it part of our mission to instill a love of baseball in future generations and baseball camps are a big part of that effort, said RiverDogs president Dave Echols. “Chris and the other instructors do a great job of teaching baseball fundamentals while having fun. There is never a shortage of smiles around the ballpark on camp days.”

The dates for 2022 RiverDogs Youth Baseball Camps are:
Week 1 – June 13-17
Week 2 – June 20-24
Week 3 – July 11-15
Week 4 – July 25-29
Week 5 – August 8-12

The team will also host three unique culinary camps this summer. A Segra Club Culinary Camp in June will focus on preparing meals that would be primarily served in an upscale environment. A Food Truck Camp from the end of June to the first of July will educate campers on making fun street foods in an outdoor setting. Finally, the RiverDogs Concession Camp in August will teach participants how to make some of the fan-favorites that are served in the concession stands on gamedays.

The one-week camps will feature daily sessions running from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each day will begin with proper station set-up, include basic cooking skills and conclude with a new lunch dish, which the campers will dine on. Culinary camp is $350 per camper for the week.

The culinary camps will be directed by RiverDogs Vice President/Food and Beverage Josh Shea. Shea served as the Food and Beverage Director for the RiverDogs from 2013-18 and spent the 2019 season with the Augusta GreenJackets before returning to Charleston in the winter of 2019. He gained culinary experience as the catering chef at Tidewater Catering while also spending time at Triangle Bar and Char and Halls Chop House.

“I am looking forward to hosting three unique camps that will provide kids an opportunity to learn about the different aspects of the RiverDogs dining experience,” Shea said. “Since their debut back in 2020, these camps are circled on my calendar each season. The excitement that learning something new brings to the faces of these children is awesome to witness and be a part of.”

Altoona Curve Launch Charitable Nonprofit

 

CURVE, PA – The Altoona Curve are pleased to announce the launch of Altoona Curve Charities, a 501c3 organization devoted to supporting local youth programs and organizations that promote exercise, health, activity, and education for the betterment of youth and community.

Altoona Curve Charities provides support to local organizations for the betterment of Altoona and the surrounding area by contributing time and funds that align with the Curve’s mission.

“The Curve have long been community partners, focused on improving the lives of all of our fans and the creation of Altoona Curve Charities will give us another tool to support programs and organizations that work toward that goal,” said Curve General Manager Nate Bowen. “We look forward to engaging with many of our existing relationships with community partners and forging new ones in 2022.”

Local support from Curve Charities has already touched the Altoona area with its contributions to a field renovation at the East End Little League in 2018 with new sod, infield dirt and edging led by the Altoona Curve Grounds Crew. The renovation came after East End Little League’s field suffered thousands of dollars in damage from vandalism and drew hundreds of neighbors, community members and Curve Front Office employees to donate their time to creating a brand-new, safe environment for kids to play baseball.

“The renovation of East End Little League was the first step for our organization toward taking a more pro-active approach in support of local youth baseball and softball,” said Curve Charities Director, Annie Choiniere. “Our 2022 Grant Program will accept applications in the fall and we look forward to creating rewarding experiences on the diamond for kids all over Blair County through this program.”

HILLSBORO, OR (February 7, 2022) – The Hillsboro Hops (@HillsboroHops) announced details of their Dream Big Scholarships for graduating high school seniors.

What: Dream Big Scholarship – $1000.00 grants for five graduating high school seniors

Who: First-generation college students who are planning on attending an Oregon university. Current high school seniors in the Greater Portland Metro & SW Washington area are eligible.
