Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with Goodwill Industries of Northern New England to host the 4th Annual Goodwill Night and Donation Drive at Hadlock Field on Wednesday, August 7th when the Sea Dogs take on the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7:00 PM.

Fans are encouraged to bring bags of gently used clothing, books and other household items to Hadlock Field to donate to Goodwill. Goodwill will have a donation center at Hadlock Field to collect the items. For a list of acceptable donations, please visit Goodwill’s website: http://www.goodwillnne.org/donate.

Fans that make a donation can enter to win a $50.00 gift card to shop any of the 27 Goodwill stores located throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Donations help fund Goodwill programs that strengthen our local communities by getting people back to work and receiving the support they need to lead more stable lives.

Puffy G, Goodwill’s mascot, will be there to throw out the first pitch.

Dragons, Cohen Recycling Team Up

DAYTON, OH – The Dayton Dragons and Cohen Recycling will be teaming up to help Miami Valley residents recycle unwanted electronics. Cohen Recycling will be collecting unwanted electronics on both June 11 and July 20 on the Fifth Third Field Plaza.

Tuesday, June 11 (7am – 3pm)

Recycle your old computers, cell phones and other unwanted electronics! Bring them to the plaza at Fifth Third Field on June 11 from 7am – 3pm and Cohen will do the rest. Enjoy FREE breakfast or lunch while you’re there! Each car will get a FREE Dragons t-shirt and an entry to win a “VIP Experience” including throwing out a first pitch at a Dragons game!

Saturday, July 20 (2pm – 5pm)

Cohen will also be recycling electronics on the plaza at Fifth Third Field on July 20 from 2pm – 5pm. You can meet the Dragons mascots, Heater and Gem, and the Green Team! Kids can play some inflatable games, get balloon animals and glitter tattoos. Naturals Community Highlights: May 15-20

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The Naturals return for a brief three-game homestand on Saturday, but Strike will be a busy Sasquatch over the next six days, making 11 appearances in five Northwest Arkansas communities as well as welcoming the Naturals back to town.

Wednesday, May 15: Strike will visit patients at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, lifting their spirits and generating smiles. After his visit to Circle of Life, Strike will have lunch with a special group of youngsters who were selected as part of the Terrific Kids program sponsored by the Bentonville Kiwanis club.

Thursday, May 16: Strike will have lunch with Terrific Kids selected by the Bentonville Kiwanis Club.

Friday, May 17: Strike begins his Friday by visiting students at Bright Field Middle School in Bentonville, followed by a trip to Mathias Elementary in Rogers. At both schools, Strike will congratulate students on a successful school year and promote their upcoming fundraising nights at Arvest Ballpark.

Later in the day, Strike will make an appearance with participants in a study conducted by the University of Arkansas Psychology department. Strike will close out the day by supporting runners and walkers in Bella Vista at the Strides for Stroke 5K and 1-mile fun run.

Saturday, May 18: Strike will start his Saturday morning with a visit to the Wildcat Rumble 5k in Bentonville. After passing out awards and celebrating with the winners, Strike will visit the Compassion House in Springdale. Following a brief lunch break, Strike will head over to Pinnacle Hills Mall in Rogers to take part in the rescheduled Touch-A-Truck event, benefitting the Junior League of Northwest Arkansas. Later in the day, Strike will appear the Bentonville Great Strides event for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

In addition to Strike’s visits around Northwest Arkansas, the Naturals will welcome eight groups to Arvest Ballpark this homestand as part of the team’s fundraising program. These groups include Elkins Elementary School, Sugar Creek Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High School, Huntsville Intermediate School, Mathias Elementary School music department, Lowell Elementary School, Aid for Developing Countries and Western Arkansas Child Development. As of May 14, the Naturals ticket fundraising program has raised $52,543 this season.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Indians are proud to announce the 2013 schedule of the annual Boy and Girl Scout events at Victory Field. This year’s slate will include three overnight campouts, as well as the Tribe’s first ever Circuit of Fun Scout Night on Saturday, May 11, which will include pre-game festivities and a post-game bases run.

Scout groups participating in the first annual Circuit of Fun Scout Night will be treated to free games in the PNC Plaza located in center field, and have the option of purchasing a discounted food and drink package during the pre-game party, scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Tribe’s award-winning mascot Rowdie will also be on hand to sign autographs and entertain patrons, as well as several players from the 2013 Indianapolis Indians squad. Tickets to the Circuit of Fun Scout Night include admission to the regularly scheduled Indians game, a special patch to commemorate the event and the opportunity to stick around after the evening’s contest to run the bases.

Victory Field will turn into an overnight camp ground for troops, dens and packs during the Tribe’s Boy and Girl Scouts Campout events. The fun-filled evening will begin with the regularly scheduled Indians game, followed by a fantastic fireworks show. Campout participants can remain in the ballpark after the game and are treated to popcorn and a movie on the videoboard. Scout groups will also have the opportunity to take to the Tribe’s outfield to set up their tents for the evening, with the grand event being capped off by breakfast on Saturday morning.

Overnight Boy Scout Campouts are set for Friday, June 7 when the Indians take on the Durham Bulls at 7:15 p.m., and Friday, June 28, as the Tribe battles the Rochester Red Wings at 7:15 p.m. The Girl Scout Campout is scheduled Friday, June 21 immediately following the 7:15 p.m. contest between the Tribe and the Charlotte Knights.

Canadians mascots enjoy annual Umbrella Decorating Challenge at Safeway

(Vancouver, B.C.) – The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club took part in Safeway Canada’s latest community initiative by partnering with Easter Seals Canada and Special Olympics Canada to launch a fundraising and awareness building campaign in support of Canadians with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Through the month of April, Canada Safeway will be asking their shoppers to help support both Easter Seals and Special Olympics across Canada through a number of awareness campaigns.

On Tuesday, the Vancouver Canadians were able to help Safeway Canada with their annual Umbrella Decorating Challenge.  Located at Safeway in downtown Vancouver, C’s mascots Bob Brown Bear, Chef Wasabi and Ms. BC Roll joined a number of local celebrities including B.C. home building icon Shell Busey to decorate a number of bright and fun umbrellas.

“Helping our neighbours living with a diverse range of abilities has long been a Safeway priority,” siad Canada Safeway President and COO Chuck Mulveena.

“When we were asked to join in this community ‘call to action’, for the Vancouver Canadians, it was for certain that we would be here to help,” added Canadians Manager, Community Relations Jeff Holloway.

Last year, over $1.6 million was raised during the annual campaign which sent hundreds of children with disabilities to Easter Seals camps and provided support for local programs offered through Special Olympics.

Cubs & PNC Bank Donate 5,300 Notebooks

The Daytona Cubs & PNC Bank have partnered to donate 5,300 notebooks to at-risk Volusia County second through fifth graders.

Daytona-Cubs-logoAs part of the The Daytona Cubs education program, the Cubs have teamed up with PNC Bank to provide notebooks to 5,300 at-risk second through fifth graders in Volusia County.

PNC Bank has joined forces with the Daytona Cubs in this initiative because the bank recognizes the role school readiness plays in the well-being of local children, their families and ultimately, the economy. Research shows the measurable impact school readiness has on the future success of at-risk children in school and life. By preparing the Daytona area’s youngest citizens for educational success, The Cubs and PNC Bank can help build a solid foundation for the future of this region.

Boux, Clotile flex their muscles for MDA

Zephyr Field was home to the third annual Muscle Walk hosted by the Greater New Orleans Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Saturday, March 9.

The venue served as a backdrop for more than 700 supporters and friends, as they took the field for a walk around the park in support of muscular dystrophy research. Participants marched around the warning track of the stadium with the “Pocket Aces” brass band leading the way.

The event drew laughter, music, and even a cupcake eating contest sponsored by the Kupcake Factory.

Boudreaux and Clotile welcomed friends to their home, including Gumbo and Sir Saint from the New Orleans Saints, Bones and Mojo from the New Orleans Voodoo, along with the Voodoo Dolls. All mascots and participants took part in a dance competition, crafts for kids, and a fire truck display courtesy of the Jefferson Parish Fire Department.

Each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association hosts Muscle Walks across the country to help raise funds for research and medical support, the largest event of its kind in the United States. This year, the event raised $50,000.00 to support local MDA initiatives.

“Our annual family-reunion style fundraiser is not just about raising funds to help in the fight against muscle disease and ALS,” said April Catarella, MDA Executive Director-New Orleans.  “It’s about getting our families together and raising awareness with the public. This year, we couldn’t have been more excited to have Zephyr Field graciously host this event. Each year we continue to grow, and the facility really enabled us to expand and create a truly memorable experience for our families. Not to mention the unique opportunity to have a second-line around the field.”

“Their staff also went above and beyond in accommodating our needs. We hope to have found our Muscle Walk home for years to come.”

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.  The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) A student at Liberty Elementary School in Lexington has won a bookmark design contest as part of the Lexington Legends/Chick-fil-A “Hit the Books” reading incentive program.

Fifth grade student Maya Chamberlain created the winning entry. She received a Legends prize pack, including Legends merchandise, a framed “Hit the Books ” poster featuring her artwork and a free membership in the 2013 Little Legends Kids Club. She also will be invited to throw a ceremonial first pitch at a designated Legends game for her school. Bookmarks featuring her artwork will be distributed to students at every school that participates in the “Hit the Books” program. More than 21,000 students from 52 central Kentucky schools are expected to take part in the program, which runs through April 1.

Samuel Jung, a second grade student at Eastern Elementary in Scott County; Grace Kim, a fourth grade student at Wilmore Elementary; Leah Olmstead, a fourth grade student at Wilmore Elementary; and Allison Steele, a fifth grade student at Stonewall Elementary in Lexington all received honorable mention for their designs. They received framed posters and Legends merchandise.

“Hit the Books has always been an important part of community outreach for the Legends,” said Sarah Bosso, the Legends’ director of community relations and special events. “We enjoy visiting the schools and meeting the students who are taking part in the program. Building literacy in childhood is a great cause. We’re glad to help develop good readers as well as good Legends fans.”

In “Hit the Books,” a baseball diamond is used to record credit for a student’s reading. For every book a student reads, a teacher places his or her initials on a base. When the student has all three bases and home plate initialed by the teacher, the student may bring a “Hit the Books” bookmark to the Legends’ box office at Whitaker Bank Ballpark to exchange it for two tickets to a Legends home game designated for their school.

The school with the most bookmarks redeemed on its designated night will win a luncheon assembly provided by the Lexington Legends and Chick-fil-A.

The 2013 season is the 13th for Legends baseball, and also marks the 13th year that the Legends have been associated with “Hit the Books.” About 150,000 students have participated.

The Legends, a class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, open the home season Monday, April 8 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark against the Asheville Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. For more information, visit www.lexingtonlegends.com.

Rock Cats to Host Welcome Home Player Dinner for Connecticut Children’s Medical Center

The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, has announced its “Welcome Home Dinner” will take place on Tuesday, April 2 at Hawks Landing Country Club in Southington.  Fans will have the opportunity to have dinner with the players before the 2013 season starts.  A team autograph session will take place at 5:00pm and dinner will be served at 6:00 pm with each table featuring a player or coach.  The Rock Cats Foundation along with the New Britain Elks Lodge #957, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and Gordon Bonetti Florist will sponsor the annual “meet the team” event, as the club arrives from spring training.  Individual tickets are only $35 for adults and $25 for children (12 and under), with the proceeds benefiting the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.  Tickets are on sale at the box office or by calling the Rock Cats at 860-224-8383 ext 22.  Tables and event sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses.  Tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis. This popular event is expected to sell out.

The Annual “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” serves as an occasion to celebrate the arrival of spring and the start of another professional baseball season in Connecticut.  Members of the Rock Cats organization- players, coaches, front office personnel and Rocky, (the team’s popular mascot)- will be present at this festive dinner.  As in the past, Rock Cats players will meet and greet all those in attendance, while also expressing their collective appreciation for the tremendous support the community has extended to this franchise for more than three decades.

Proceeds from the “Rock Cats Welcome Home Dinner” will benefit the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, which is dedicated to improving the physical and emotional health of children through family-centered care, research, education and advocacy.  “This unique event provides the public a unique opportunity to spend an evening with the players they will be rooting for this season while benefiting a wonderful cause in the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center,” Rock Cats President John Willi said.

The Rock Cats open their 31st season on April 4 in Richmond, Virginia and return to the Hardware City a week later on Thursday, April 11 (6:05) for the home opener against the Red Sox affiliate, the Portland Sea Dogs.

66ers Launch Hit The Books Reading Campaign

San Bernardino, CA– The Inland Empire 66ers are on a mission to visit area elementary schools in the upcoming months to promote the importance of reading, through their Hit the Books Reading Program presented by Rotolo Chevrolet. The organization’s community relations team, alongside lovable mascot Bernie, will hold assemblies at participating schools which will culminate in each student receiving a baseball themed bookmark. When the student reaches the reading requirement, they will earn two free tickets to a selected 66ers game.

66ers Community Groups Manager, Kelsey Beckenbach stated, “We realize the importance of touching these students lives in a positive aspect. It’s a very special treat for Bernie and 66ers staff members to come to their school just for them. Kids hold on to those memories for a long time and we hope that it’ll further their interest in reading beyond finishing the bookmark.”

Mike Caposio, General Manager of Rotolo Chevrolet noted of their sponsorship, “We here at Rotolo Chevrolet always strive to be involved in the community and what better way to be involved than by helping to promote the importance of reading.”

The selected 66ers games in which the students will be invited are the first four Sundays of the 2013 season (April 7, April 21, May 12 and May 19). Three monetary donations will be made to the schools with the highest representation throughout the four days. The school with the most students and teachers attending these games will receive a donation of $1,500. The two schools in second and third will receive a donation of $1,000 each. 66ers Partner with Joe Baca Foundation to Host Free Baseball Clinic & Little League Sign-Up

San Bernardino, CA– The Inland Empire 66ers and the Joe Baca Foundation will be hosting a free baseball clinic at San Manuel Stadium on January 12, 2013 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. The festivities will also include the District 43 little league sign-ups. This will be the first year that this event has been put on, all in an effort to encourage little league participation as well as a fun and educational clinic for baseball and softball players ages 4 – 18. Participants in the clinic do not have to sign up for little league. This is an open clinic for all children.

This event will mark the first community function that the Inland Empire 66ers are holding in 2013. The team’s mascot, Bernie, will make an appearance and there will be inflatables set up for children to play in. Children of all levels will be able to participate in the clinic and enjoy drills that are based on their individual skill levels.

66ers Community Relations Manager, Kelsey Beckenbach-English stated, “The 66ers and local little leagues have had a strong partnership since the team was known as the Spirit and played their games at Fiscalini Field. Every year, we assist local teams and leagues in their fundraising efforts and we hope that with this free community event, we will be able to assist in the increase of participation for their 2013 season.”

The Joe Baca Foundation’s mission is to “build a better future…for our children.” These types of clinics allow them to meet their goal of emphasizing physical health and teaching the basic fundamentals of baseball to under-served youth in our communities.

It’s only November, and already nearly 35,000 children have been introduced to the Fisher Cats Reading Challenge, presented by the Community College System of New Hampshire.  Those kids represent almost 100 schools that are using the challenge to highlight the importance of reading in a fun way.

Fungo and Slider, the Fisher Cats’ mascots, are visiting schools and delivering bookmarks with a special challenge.  Each student who reads at least five books outside their normal school curriculum will receive a pair of tickets to a Fisher Cats Reading Challenge Night during the 2013 season, courtesy of CCSNH.  On the night of their game, they’ll be honored during a pre-game parade highlighting their achievements.

These students are also representing their schools in a team competition.  The school with the highest percentage of participation could win up to $3,000 from the Fisher Cats Foundation.

By the end of the school year, the challenge is expected to reach more than 55,000 students in over 150 schools throughout New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts.  To get your school involved in the challenge, contact Meg Shea at (603) 641-2005 ext. 102 or mshea@nhfishercats.com.

Cookies with Claus Set for December 8

Free event starts at 10am to support Toys for Tots

Salisbury, Md. – The Delmarva Shorebirds are once again hosting “Cookies with Claus” on December 8 from 10am-12pm in the Executive Club of Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The event is free and open to the public. Santa Claus and Sherman Claus will be in attendance to get you ready for the holiday season.

The Shorebirds are encouraging everyone that attends to bring a new toy to the stadium, which will be donated to Toys for Tots. Through the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program the toys will be distributed as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children on the Eastern Shore.

Cookies, coffee and hot chocolate will be served up in the Executive Club.

Each family will have ample opportunity to take pictures with Santa Claus and Sherman Claus. Please bring your own camera to take pictures.

There will also be arts and crafts and games set up in the Executive Club for children.

Sandersville Elementary celebrates ‘Hit the Books’ win

Sandersville Elementary School students held a celebration Friday after winning the Lexington Legends/Chick-fil-A “Hit the Books” Reading Program contest for 2012.

In “Hit the Books,” a baseball diamond is used to record credit for a student’s reading. For every book a student reads, a teacher places his or her initials on a base. When the student has all three bases and home plate initialed by the teacher, the student may bring a “Hit the Books” bookmark to the Legends’ box office at Whitaker Bank Ballpark to exchange it for two tickets.

The 2012 season was the 12th for Legends baseball, and also marked the 12th year that the Legends have been associated with the “Hit the Books” program. About 125,000 central Kentucky students have participated.

During the 2012 season, Sandersville Elementary students redeemed 260 bookmarks – more than any other school. All 800 students and faculty were rewarded with a free chicken nugget party, with the Legends’ Big L and the Chick-fil-A cow serving as hosts.

“Hit the Books reading incentive program is designed to encourage kids to read books in and away from school,” said Sarah Piester, the Legends’ director of community relations. “We believe the program generates a greater enjoyment of reading while tying it to baseball. We were thrilled with the number of students who participated overall and could not be more proud of Sandersville Elementary students for their accomplishment.”

Marauders in the Community

The off-season is still a busy time for the Marauders when it comes to helping the community

Baseball season may be over, but the Marauders are still busy staying involved in the local community. Players, front office members, and mascot are still busy putting forward a great effort to make a positive contribution in Manatee County.

Marty the Marauder was in attendance on Saturday, September 15 as the Miracle League of Manasota held their opening day for the fall 2012 season. Six teams and more than 90 registered players took part in three games at the new Miracle League fields that opened earlier this year with financial support from the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles.

Congratulations are due to 2012 Marauder Casey Sadler and 2010 Marauder Tim Alderson for earning recognition for their tremendous community service during the 2012 season. Sadler was the Marauders’ Pirates Community Commitment Program Award winner this season. Alderson received the award with the Altoona Curve. Both players were recognized at PNC Park last Tuesday before the Pirates game against the Brewers.

Manager of Florida Operations A.J. Grant raised more than $1,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by participating in the local MDA chapter’s Lock Up event at Pier 22 Restaurant. More than a dozen donors helped A.J. raise that lofty amount for a great cause.
