Stars & Stripes jerseys up for auction Aug. 25

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (August 17, 2017) – The Kannapolis Intimidators will host a jerseys-off-our-backs silent auction on Friday, August 25, featuring the team’s Stars & Stripes jerseys which have been worn at all Friday home games during the 2017 season. The silent auction begins when gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. game against the Lakewood BlueClaws, and bidding ends with the final out of the sixth inning. Auction proceeds will go to benefit local veterans groups, including the VFW Post 8989 in Kannapolis.

The Intimidators’ Stars & Stripes uniforms feature a camo body and Mount Rushmore motif with red and white stripes down the left sleeve and a white stars on a blue background down the right sleeve. Winners of the jersey-off-our-backs silent auction will have the opportunity to go down onto the field following the game and have their jersey autographed by the Intimidators player who wore it during the game.

Tickets are still available for the team’s final regular season Friday on August 25, which will also feature Get Healthy Kannapolis where fans can earn Ballpark Bucks for healthy snacks by taking a physical challenge at the ballpark. About the Intimidators
The Intimidators are currently playing the 23rd season of professional baseball in Kannapolis and 17th season as a Chicago White Sox affiliate. D-Braves make donation to Danville Veterans Memorial

August 16, 2017

DANVILLE, Va. – As part of the Minor League Baseball CommUNITY initiative and in support of the Danville community, the Danville Braves made a donation of $1,455 to the Danville Veterans Memorial Fund. The D-Braves raised the donated money through mystery ball and mystery bobblehead sales/auctions held during two games this season.

“We’re proud to continue to support the Danville Veterans Memorial in honor of the sacrifices of the men and women of our nation’s military,” said Danville Braves General Manager David Cross.

Hometown Heroes Celebration Night at Fifth Third Field

The Dayton Dragons and the Dayton Development Coalition will host the second of two Hometown Heroes™ Celebration Nights Saturday, August 5 at Fifth Third Field when the Dragons play the Lansing Lugnuts at 7:07 p.m.

“Hometown Heroes™ Celebration Nights represent something truly special about the Dayton Region,” said Jeff Hoagland, DDC President and CEO. “Our desire to thank those who serve our country, combined with a true American pastime, has created an incredible night dedicated to our Hometown Heroes. We want to thank them for their service and let them know, no matter where they are stationed, Dayton will always welcome them home.”

The Celebration Nights are the highlight of the year-long Hometown Heroes™ program, which honors our community’s service men and women affiliated with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Springfield, Ohio Air National Guard Base. The DDC and the Dragons, with the generous support of local businesses, began the program 14 years ago as a way for the community to support the thousands of military families in the region.

Colonel Adam Willis, the commander of the Air Force Reserves 445th Airlift Wing. and Colonel Bradley McDonald, the Wright-Patt installation and 88th Air Base Wing commander at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base., will throw out a first pitch.

Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to help welcome home members of the Air Force who have recently returned home from deployment, as well as recognize Selected Exceptional Airmen. In addition, Colonel McDonald will also swear in 15 new Air Force recruits during the game.

The Association of Defense Communities recently recognized Dayton as a Great American Defense Community, in part for the Hometown Heroes™ programs at the Dragons, Victoria Theatre Association, Dayton Art Institute, and Dayton Air Show. Hometown HeroesTM, working in close partnership with Dayton Hoopla/First Four events, UD & WSU Men’s Basketball, and the Fraze Pavilion, offers year-long events honoring our military community.

During the national anthem, which will be performed by Air Force Band of Flight/MSgt Alyson Jones, the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the colors.

On the plaza, there will be a Security Forces Humvee, an Air Force Recruit Van, and the 445th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron will showcase equipment used on evacuation missions. The Dragons Entertainment staff will hand out mini flags, and fans can sign “Thank You” cards to send to troops overseas.

Community Heroes Week Highlights Five-Game Homestand

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham Barons are set to welcome the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, Double-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds to Regions Field for a five-game homestand beginning on Sunday night. A jam packed schedule of promotions, events and giveaways are on tap for the home stand. In addition, The SwitchYard On 14th will be open before, during and after games all homestand for fans to enjoy a game of ping pong or bocce ball, as well as a drink from the Barstream, or some of the new menu items featured in the Foodstream. Chasers Players, Front Office Staff to Participate in Chasers Community Week

The Omaha Storm Chasers organization’s third annual “Chasers Community Week” presented by Summit Dental Health kicks off on Friday, July 29. Omaha Storm Chasers players and front office members will be volunteering their time throughout the Omaha Metro community from July 29-August 6. Details for each day of “Chasers Community Week” can be found below, which include players visiting Children’s Hospital and the Southwest YMCA, as well as participating in Buddy Baseball at Werner Park. In addition, the front office will help serve dinner at Ronald McDonald House, and volunteer at The Wall That Heals among many other events in the community.

Planned Events for “Chasers Community Week”

  • Saturday, July 29 – The Storm Chasers organization will be auctioning off Christmas sweater jerseys on Christmas in July presented by Mannheim Steamroller, with the proceeds benefitting Moving Veterans Forward. There will also be a lemonade stand hosted by the Storm Chasers and Summit Dental at Werner Park that evening, with proceeds benefitting the Open Door Mission.
  • Sunday, July 30 – The Storm Chasers organization hosts the first of two UnitedHealthcare Library Nights at Werner Park. This will be in addition to hosting First Responders and having interactive fire, police and medical displays, including a helicopter in the parking lot, on First Responders Night that evening.
  • Monday, July 31 – Several Storm Chasers players will be visiting Southwest YMCA starting at 11:00 a.m. to play a pickup game of baseball with kids at that location. That evening, the Storm Chasers organization’s second UnitedHealthcare Library Night will take place at Werner Park, in addition to a Drawstring Backpack Giveaway presented by Huber Chevrolet.
  • Tuesday, August 1 – Storm Chasers front office members along with Summit Dental Health employees will assist in cooking and serving dinner at the Ronald McDonald House.
  • Wednesday, August 2 – The organization will host their annual Jirschele Family Memorial Golf Outing at Tara Hills Golf Course to help benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Wall That Heals, a half-scale duplication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., is also set to arrive at Werner Park that day thanks to Werner Enterprises. Storm Chasers players and front office members will also participate in the Leader Reader at the Children’s Museum. Storm Chasers front office members and a mascot will also be visiting Offutt Air Force Base that day.
  • Thursday, August 3 – The Wall That Heals, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. will be open beginning at 11:00am until the closing ceremonies take place at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 6.
  • Friday, August 4 – Storm Chasers players will be visiting with patients at Children’s Hospital.
  • Saturday, August 5 – Bellevue Buddy Baseball will take place at Werner Park at 9:00 a.m., with Storm Chasers players and front office members assisting in the morning event to support the Down Syndrome Alliance. The event will feature headshots and walk-up songs for the buddies playing baseball. Storm Chasers players and Casey will also be at First National Bank on 132nd & Center for their annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive.
  • Sunday, August 6 – The Storm Chasers organization salutes all former and current members of our armed forces on Military Appreciation Day at Werner Park. Following that day’s contest at approximately 6:00 p.m. will be a closing ceremony for The Wall That Heals, which will include the playing of “Taps”.

The Storm Chasers return to Werner Park to begin an eight-game homestand on Saturday, July 29, starting with a four-game set versus the Fresno Grizzlies. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. that evening.

Shorebirds Present Donation to VFW

SALISBURY, Md. — The Delmarva Shorebirds are proud to announce the results from their July 4 jersey auction to benefit the VFW’s Military Assistance Program and Operation We Care, as the team presented a check for $5,258.02 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

“We made sure to include this great cause in our celebration of Independence Day along with fireworks on one of our biggest crowds of the year,” Shorebirds General Manager Chris Bitters said. “We were very excited and proud to see the generosity and support our fans showed through this auction of our specialty Patriotic jerseys.”

The jerseys, which were specially made for the game that night, resembled an American flag waving in the wind, while featuring the emblems of all five military branches on the back above the numbers. A silent auction for the game-worn jerseys was held during the game, with Shorebirds players and coaches presenting them to winning bidders.

Delmarva has more special jersey nights scheduled in 2017, including a Christmas In July jersey night on July 29, a Maryland Pride Thursday jersey auction on August 24, and an Orange Friday jersey auction on September 1. All three auctions will benefit the Shorebirds’ Fly Together Fund.

Dragons Host Start of Warrior Weekend Thursday

The Dayton Dragons are hosting the opening event of the 2017 Team Fastrax Warrior Weekend to Remember at Fifth Third Field on Thursday, July 20 during their game with the Peoria Chiefs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Dragons fans are already familiar with Team Fastrax, the professional skydiving team that has landed in the outfield carrying the American flag prior to games on multiple occasions. The team is composed primarily of military veterans and four years ago, co-founders John and David Hart decided that they wanted to do more to honor our nation’s heroes. That is when Warrior Weekend came to fruition.

“It is important that we honor and remember our nation’s veterans and the families that have lost their loved ones,” explained co-founder David Hart. “Especially those who have been injured physically and emotionally.”

The mission of the weekend is to honor veterans, combat injured/Purple Heart recipients, and the families of fallen military members by providing life-changing experiences that facilitate new friendships and emotional healing. Each year, over 50 individuals are honored as part of the event.

The Dragons game on Thursday is just the first of several Warrior Weekend events in the Dayton area that are open to the public. Others include a car show, silent auction, balloon festival, and 5k run/walk.

“We invite everyone to come out and join us,” said John Hart, co-founder of the event. “There are many events that the general public can get involved in. Visit our website, attend, and celebrate these amazing men and women.”

Prior to the game, there will be army vehicles, motorcycles from the US Veterans Motorcycle Club, and Muddy Buddys jeeps on the plaza. On the field before the game, the jeeps will take part in a parade around the warning track, skydivers from Team Fastrax will land in center field with the American Flag, and Medal of Honor/Purple Heart Recipient Command Sgt. The first 200 women to register at our Diamond Dig table near customer service will be able to go on the field following the game and dig for a diamond valued at over $4,000 presented by Diamonds Direct. Finally, the first 1,000 women through the gates at Regions Field will receive a pink rose courtesy of Norton’s Florist. The executive entrance opens at 4:30 p.m., with all gates opening at 5:00. Manchester, N.H. – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, have announced the rosters for the Army vs. NH Celebrity Softball Game. Legends to celebrate the United States Armed Forces July 8!

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – Honoring the United States Armed Forces is something that the Lexington Legends do every home game in a variety of ways, but there is always one game dedicated to specifically saying “Thank You” to those who have served our country. July 8th is the night the Lexington Legends have reserved as their Military Appreciation Night, which has been celebrated by the organization since their inception in 2001. Military Appreciation Night is presented by LFUCG Department of Environmental Quality.

The night features special ticket offers and discounts for Active Duty and Retired Military as well as Veterans, Armed Forces branch music and recognitions throughout the game, a 20 foot by 30 foot American Flag in the outfield for the National Anthem, Mine-craft inspired digital camo jerseys worn on-field by the Legends players, with those jerseys in a silent auction taking place throughout the game; giving fans the opportunity to take home the special jerseys, the Joe Everson original painting of Iwo Jima (from the July 4th National Anthem) will also be included in the silent auction, and much more. The most highlighted features of the evening are the honorary ceremonial first pitchers and four of the thirty people who will be unveiling the 20 foot by 30 foot American Flag for the National Anthem.

There will be five ceremonial first pitches tossed out by five unique individuals who have bravely served our country in one way or another. First, Colonel Pete Evans, U.S. Army (RET) who has served in Afghanistan, Korea and to the Pentagon. Second pitch will be Mike Niklarz, who is the Director of Kentucky’s National Cemetery Complex, which consists of 9 locations and includes historic Camp Nelson National Cemetery. The Legends third ceremonial first pitch is a 30 year U.S. Air Force veteran and Master Navigator Colonel Mark Roland. Colonel Roland and his wife Barbara are also Gold Star parents-their son, Air Force Captain Matthew Roland paid the ultimate sacrifice August 26, 2015 and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry. Gunnery Sergeant James R. Barnett is the fourth ceremonial first pitch, as he has been named “Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year” for the 623rd Field Artillery Battalion, the 38th Field Artillery Brigade, and the Kentucky National Guard for 2017. The fifth and final ceremonial first pitch is 97 year old Captain Helen Horlacher Evans, from Lexington, Kentucky. Captain Helen Horlacher Evans is one of the few remaining female World War II veterans still alive today.

The National Anthem for the July 8 game will feature a 20 foot by 30 foot American flag, unveiled by the assistance of thirty retired military, veterans, military family members, and four Tuskegee Airmen; the first African American Fighter and Bomber Pilots in the United States Armed Forces.

The Legends welcome media for photographs and interviews to help honor and support those who will be recognized at the 2017 Military Appreciation Night game, July 8 with gates opening at 5:30pm and first pitch 6:35pm.

‘The Wall That Heals’ Coming to Werner Park Aug. 3-6

The Wall That Heals, featuring a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., will be coming to Werner Park from August 3-6. The exhibit, which includes the replica wall and Mobile Education Center, will be presented by Werner Enterprises and open 24 hours a day over the four day span starting on August 3rd.

“Hosting The Wall That Heals at Werner Park in conjunction with Werner Enterprises will be an incredible honor,” said Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro. “We highly encourage everyone in the Omaha Metro to take the time to visit and pay tribute along with us to our servicemen and servicewomen in our Armed Forces.”

Approximately 250 feet long, the memorial wall bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam, while honoring the three million-plus Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War. It will be escorted to Werner Park by local law enforcement on Wednesday, August 2 and on display beginning the following day Thursday, August 3. It will be open 24 hours a day until the evening of August 6, following the Storm Chasers’ Military Appreciation Day contest at Werner Park, with closing ceremonies taking place post-game.

“Taking The Wall That Heals on the road gives thousands more veterans and their family members an opportunity to see The Wall and honor those who have served and sacrificed so much,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the nonprofit that built The Wall. “It helps veterans from all of America’s conflicts to find healing and a powerful connection through their common military experiences.”

Friends and family members of those who are honored on the wall are encouraged to bring a photo to the exhibit to be scanned and included in the VVMF’s The Wall of Faces. More details about The Wall That Heal‘s visit to Omaha, including opening ceremonies at Werner Park and the Storm Chasers’ Military Appreciation Day on Sunday, August 6, will be announced later this month.

The Wall That Heals has visited more than 500 communities throughout the nation since its dedication. Military salute, FIREWORKS, $1 beers on tap

The State College Spikes are home for another big weekend at the ballpark through Sunday, July 9. Military Appreciation Night and FIREWORKS presented by Lion Country Kia, a special $1 Beer Saturday, the All-American BBQ, and much more will pack the promotional schedule at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Spikes will host the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) for all three games, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Friday night. The Doubledays will also bring a familiar face with them as State College Area High School graduate Nick Raquet returns home after being selected as the Nationals’ third-round draft choice this year.

The fun starts on Friday with Princess Night and Daddy-Daughter Date Night that evening, featuring a Post-Game Family Dance. Plus, fans can purchase the 4 for $44 Friday Northwest Family Value Ticket Package, with four of our best seats, four hot dogs and four small sodas available for just $44.

Saturday, get a big day in Central PA started at the ballpark with the All-American BBQ as the Spikes face the Doubledays at noon. It’s also a special $1 Beer Saturday at the ballpark, with 12-oz. domestic draft beers available for just $1 apiece from 11-1.

Plus, the All -American BBQ will give fans a special opportunity to purchase individual all-you-can-eat seats in the Pepsi Picnic Pavilion, starting at $17 for kids 12 and under and $24 for adults.

The Spikes have autographed the special patriotic hats they wore on July 3, and each hat is up for bids to help those who have ensured our freedoms. After the game, the skies will light up with a Spike-tacular FIREWORKS show.

Sunday is also WHVL Day at the Ballpark, as the first 500 fans receive Spikes Koozies presented by WHVL-TV. WHVL-TV will also broadcast Sunday’s game live with Steve Jones providing the play-by-play.

Kids can also run the bases after all three games this weekend thanks to Wonderland Charter School.

Bank of America and Chihuahuas to Honor Veteran on Sunday

EL PASO – June 30, 2017 – Army veteran Justin Griffin has been named the winner of the Bank of America Manager for a Day announced the Chihuahuas. Griffin, who was nominated via a social media contest, will fill the role on Sunday, July 2nd during the GECU Independence Day Celebration as the Chihuahuas take on the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks) at 7:05 p.m.

Griffin’s honor comes in addition to a $10 military offer on Zone E, K, L & Standing Room Only (SRO) tickets as well as the best postgame Fireworks Spectacular in El Paso on July 2nd and July 3rd.

“I can’t even put into words how thankful I am for my amazing wife, wonderful family, friends, and for such a great organization for even making this possible,” Griffin said. “This is truly an honor and a dream come true. I feel like a kid again!”

Following his tour in Afghanistan, Griffin was assigned to Fort Bliss and deployed to Iraq with the 1st Armored Division.

During Griffin’s 12 years of service he received multiple badges, awards and medals. These include but are not limited to the Combat Action Badge, six Army Accommodation Medals, eight Army Achievement Medals, four Good Conduct Medals, and the Humanitarian Service Medal for his assistance with Hurricane Katrina relief. He was also awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation, U.S. Army Airborne Wings, U.S. Army Air Assault Wings and multiple foreign Parachutist Badges, to name a few.

Following his retirement, Griffin is now a stay at home dad to his two sons, Reece (3), and Bennett (1), and is a loving and devoted husband to his wife Karla.

BANK OF AMERICA MANAGER FOR A DAY FINALISTS

ANTONIO GARCIA: Antonio Garcia served in the United States Army with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. Garcia was an Aircraft Electrician, working on the UH60 Blackhawk.

During his years of service, he received the Air Medal for Persian Gulf Operations, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (for Persian Gulf Operations), the Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), and the Army Achievement Medal.

DAVID NEVAREZ: David Nevarez served as a Marine from Sept 7 1983 – July 7th 1991 as a Logistics Specialist at various Commands during his time in service. He spent many hours on the flight line and pier side ensuring all Marines and equipment were accounted for.

Nevarez was assigned to 5th Marine Regiment when they were called into Desert Storm and was part of the Logistical Team that assembled the Largest Amphibious Force since the Korean War and served on the USS Tripoli, USS Denver and USS Barbour County. He was part of Regimental Landing Team 5, the Forward Element of 5th Marines during Desert Storm and was assigned to Task Force Papa Bear.

Nevarez received numerous awards including the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Good Conduct Medal with 1 Star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), and the National Defense Medal & Combat Action Ribbon.

Nevarez is married to Sandra Nevarez has three children, Adeliade Redding of Jamul, California, and Esteban and Emilio Nevarez.

ROMAN SANDOVAL: Roman Sandoval is an Army Combat Veteran from El Paso. He enlisted in the US Army in 2001 and was stationed at Ft. Bliss as an Automated Logistics Specialist. Sandoval was a member of the 5/52 11th ADA Brigade’s 507th Maintenance Company.

While serving he earned numerous awards including the Unit Soldier of the Month, Battalion Soldier of the Quarter, and Brigade Soldier of the Year nominee, Army Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The only tour was a deployment for Sandoval was with the 507th to Iraq in 2003 at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While serving, his unit was ambushed; nine friends and coworkers were killed in action while six others were captured as prisoners of war. He returned safely home.

MICHAEL VELEZ: Michael Velez joined the Marine Corps in September of 2008 and attended the Amphibious Assault Vehicle school and assigned to North Carolina with the 2nd AAV Battalion. Velez was attached to Bravo Company and began doing training for a deployment to Afghanistan. Deployed in December of 2009 to the Helmand Province in Southern Afghanistan, he was part of Operation Moshtarak or also known as “The Battle of Marjah” which was the biggest joint operation in Afghanistan to date.

Velez received numerous awards including the International Security Assistance Force Award (ISAF), a Navy Unit Commendation Award, and a Meritorious Mast given to me by my unit for actions in Afghanistan. He was Honorably Discharged in June of 2012.

Jumbo Shrimp to wear Stars & Stripes caps July 1-3 to benefit Welcome Back Veterans

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, along with all Minor League Baseball teams, will honor America and help raise much-needed funds for a worthy cause this Independence Day holiday weekend by wearing specially-designed red, white and blue caps from New Era Cap Company for games played from July 1-4.

All 160 Minor League Baseball teams will participate in the “Stars & Stripes” cap program and will wear the specialty caps as part of fundraising and awareness initiatives for Welcome Back Veterans, an organization dedicated to addressing the ongoing needs of military personnel and their families.

Minor League Baseball will once again donate 100 percent of the proceeds from cap sales to Welcome Back Veterans. Since the program’s inception, MiLB has contributed annually to the veterans’ organization. The cap features a red, white, blue and silver version of the team logo and may be purchased in team stores and online by visiting team websites.

The Jumbo Shrimp will wear their caps for home games at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Saturday, July 1, through Monday, July 3, and the caps will be available at the souvenir store during those games beginning July 1. Following Independence Day July 4, any remaining stock of caps will also be available in the store and online at jaxshrimp.com/shop.

“We are honored to again team with Welcome Back Veterans and assist those who have served our country through the Stars & Stripes cap program this Fourth of July weekend,” said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner. “It is one small way we can show our appreciation for their contributions to our country and help honor America.”

Additionally, for the first time, Minor League Baseball umpires will wear red, white and blue stars and stripes-decorated hats to celebrate Independence Day during games from July 1-4.

UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp return to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. against Mobile. Gates open at 6 p.m. for the Date Night Special, when a package of two tickets, two hot dogs, two sodas and popcorn is just $20 at the box office windows. It is also Get JAX’ed Night, featuring local fitness centers and individuals competing in on-field and in-stadium contests.
