Buffalo-Bisons-2013-logoAs part of the Buffalo Bisons‘ long-standing sponsorship of the City of Buffalo Public High School baseball program, City high school games will return to Coca-Cola Field starting this Saturday, April 19. The Bisons wide-ranging sponsorship, which enters its eighth year in 2014, has successfully revitalized the game within Buffalo Public High Schools as well as prepared young athletes to compete at the collegiate level.

The year’s games begin Saturday, April 19 (10 a.m.) at Coca-Cola Field as City Honors hosts Nichols High School (schedule below).

Since 2007, Bisons owners Bob and Mindy Rich have contributed nearly $500,000 towards the enhancement of high school baseball throughout Buffalo’s Public High Schools.

The Bisons support for the program includes providing team uniforms, paying league and umpire fees, funding stipends for assistant coaches for each Buffalo Public High School team and the use of Coca-Cola Field’s diamond and indoor batting cages year round. Additionally, $250,000 was provided for the renovation of Johnny B. Wiley Stadium, providing the City of Buffalo a top-notch athletic facility for their teams to play in and for the community to share.

Part of the Bisons’ adoption also includes the formation of the Junior Bisons baseball team. The top players from each of the City of Buffalo high schools are joined together to compete in the County of Erie Baseball Association (CEBA) throughout the summer. The focus of the team has always been team-building, fundamentals and life skills teachings. The Junior Bisons have made the post season four times and two former Junior Bisons are currently playing baseball at the collegiate level.

Baseball fans in Niagara have even more of a reason to head across the river to watch the Buffalo Bisons. Not only are the Bisons the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, but in 2014, proceeds of Bisons Flex Tickets purchased at the United Way South Niagara will benefit the South Niagara region.

“We are thrilled that the Bisons are helping us out here in South Niagara,” says Tamara Coleman-Lawrie, executive director of United Way South Niagara. “There are a lot of baseball fans in our region, and when tickets are ordered through our office, our whole community will benefit.”

Bisons Flex Tickets give baseball fans the ultimate flexibility when planning for the 2014 season. Each ticket purchased at the United Way South Niagara costs just $12 and is undated, meaning it can be redeemed at any time at the Coca-Cola Field Box Office for any 2014 game (excluding special events). Plus, each ticket purchased will benefit the United Way South Niagara.

Muckdogs Announce “Hit the Books” Reading Program

The Batavia Muckdogs today announced the start of their reading program, designed to promote reading with the youth of the local communities. Along with the help of Smoke Free NOW, 2014 will mark the second year of the “HIT THE BOOKS with the Batavia Muckdogs” reading program.

As part of this program, the Muckdogs have provided various schools and libraries across the area with customized bookmarks. On the back of these bookmarks, children can have a parent, guardian, teacher, or librarian initial each time they complete a book. When a child completes 10 books, they can redeem the bookmark at the Dwyer Stadium box office for a FREE TICKET to any Sunday-Thursday (excluding July 3rd) Batavia Muckdogs’ game! If a child reads 20 books, they will be entered into a drawing to win autographed memorabilia, opportunities to throw out a first pitch at a Muckdogs game and other great prizes.

In addition to the many participating schools, bookmarks will be made available to children at the following local libraries:

Brooklyn, NY – March 24th – Spring is finally here, and that means baseball season can’t be far behind. After the winter we’ve had, little leaguers throughout the city are chomping at the bit to get back on the field and throw baseballs instead of snow balls. With that in mind, the Brooklyn Cyclones have introduced the all-new “Little Kids, Big Stars” Program to highlight the best and brightest in youth baseball and softball from the five boroughs and Long Island.

Saturday, April 12th and running through Saturday, June 7th, coaches can nominate one player from their team every week by visiting BrooklynCyclones.com. Every week, the Cyclones will pick five winners from those submitted who will be named the “Little Kids, Big Stars” of the week.

“We are really excited for this new program,” said Cyclones Vice President Steve Cohen. “It is designed to recognize those children who truly have a passion for the game. This year MCU Park will host the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, so we thought it was a great opportunity to highlight the all-stars from not just the NYPL but from youth baseball and softball leagues all across the Metropolitan area.”

What makes a Big Star? The program is open to boys and girls between the ages of five and fourteen, and winners will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Passion for baseball / softball.
  • Sportsmanship.
  • Serves as a leader on the team.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Helpful to coaches and teammates.
  • Skilled on the field of play.

The team program isn’t looking to highlight just the best players from around the city, but instead, looking to highlight the best examples of what it means to have a passion for the game of baseball/softball.

Each of the winners will receive an exclusive invitation to a baseball clinic with Cyclones players and coaches, tickets and on-field recognition prior to our June 29th game vs. Staten Island, access to the field for Cyclones Batting Practice, a chance to throw out a first pitch, a commemorative t-shirt and recognition in the Cyclones 2014 game program.

ValleyCats announce youth field renovations

Four fields to be renovated in under 24 hours

TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats, with the support of BlueShield of Northeastern New York, will renovate four youth ball fields in less than 24 hours on Thursday, April 17. As part of the ‘4 in 24’ program, Schenectady Little League, Twin Town Little League, Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League, and Spring Youth Baseball, will all receive renovations to their playing surface.

In 2014, Little League Baseball and the New York-Penn League each celebrate their 75th anniversary. Additionally, Schenectady will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the original Schenectady Little League’s World Series win in 1954. The Michigan Avenue field, which will receive the renovation, was home to the 1954 team. In a statement issued by the Schenectady Little League Board of Directors, the league expressed its gratification on being selected:

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our league and our community. We now have the opportunity to give this field a much-needed makeover, that will enable us to begin the transformation of the Michigan Avenue complex into a monument to be looked upon in the years to come as a positive influence in our city, and to our baseball community. We are humbled by this decision, and look forward to partnering together with both the Tri-City ValleyCats and our community, to make this a positive experience for our young athletes.”

Twin Town Little League, the ValleyCats neighbors across the street from “The Joe,” and Berne Knox-Westerlo Little League, will also celebrate Little League’s 75th anniversary with a brand new playing surface.

Twin Town will receive the renovation on the field where it plays all of its championship games, and most all-star tournament games.

“For years we have wanted to make significant repairs to our Williams Road No. 2 field, but have not had the resources. This will truly make it our signature field. Twin Town Little League is excited to partner with the ValleyCats on such a special project that will serve children in the community for years to come,” said Bob Schuman, President, Twin Town Little League.

The field in Berne felt the effects of Hurricane Irene, and has never been the same since.

“Fixing our field has been on the league’s wish list for at least six years. It has only gotten worse over that time, to the point where it has become a safety concern,” said Kevin Toomey, President, Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League. “We are a small league with an equally small budget, so getting this done was going to be a real challenge for us. We managed to buy some good baseball dirt a few years ago, but Hurricane Irene came through a few months later and took it all away. To have someone come in and take care of this all at once is a dream come true.”

Spring Youth Baseball has been part of the Troy community since 1955, and provides house and competitive travel baseball to children from 3-12 years old.

“We are honored, excited and grateful for being selected by the Tri-City ValleyCats for the ‘4 in 24’ field renovation program. It will allow our organization to improve field conditions and maintain a fun, safe atmosphere for kids to continue to learn the game of baseball at all levels. The kids that play ball at Spring and for the Renegades will surely be excited to step onto a field that the Tri-City ValleyCats are responsible to help renovate.”

This spring will be the fourth straight season of the ‘4 in 24’ project, and continues to be one of the ValleyCats most important yearly initiatives.

“Each year the ‘4 in 24’ project provides an opportunity for our front office to get out into the community and support today’s youth by refurbishing ball fields. We couldn’t do it without the outstanding support of BlueShield of Northeastern New York, who shares our deep commitment of giving back to our communities,” said Rick Murphy, Vice President / General Manager, Tri-City ValleyCats.

In 2012, the ValleyCats and BlueShield of Northeastern New York formed a strong community partnership known as the Community Grounds Crew, an expanded initiative to assist local youth leagues with maintenance and upkeep of their fields throughout the spring and summer. Their mission is to provide the youth of the Capital Region with a safe place to play, learn, grow, and most importantly, have fun.

“BlueShield is proud to continue our support for the third year,” said Dr. Kirk Panneton, regional executive and medical director, BlueShield of Northeastern New York. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our corporate mantra, ‘healthy changes everything.’ Playing on a safe and well-maintained field is good for our region’s children, and it’s good for our community. We congratulate the Tri-City ValleyCats for their continued maintenance of more than 10 fields that have been transformed.”

The four fields will receive brand new sod, bases, a home plate and pitcher’s mound, and the baselines will be measured to the correct specifications. The entire scope of the project will be completed in one day.

The efforts will also be aided by the support of Admar Construction, who will provide the necessary equipment to complete the renovations. Other support comes from the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation, whose contributions come from past events held at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

ValleyCats Accepting Applications for ‘4 in 24’ Youth Field Renovations

TROY, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats are now accepting applications from youth leagues across the Capital Region for the 4th Annual ‘4 in 24’ youth field renovations. The renovations will take place in a 24-hour time period in early April 2014, as four chosen youth fields will have new sod placed on their infield while also seeing their pitcher’s mound and home plate areas rebuilt.

The ‘4 in 24’ is the kick-off event for the Community Grounds Crew, an expanded initiative with the assistance from BlueShield of Northeastern New York. This program will undertake additional projects and renovations on numerous other youth fields throughout the spring and summer.

“BlueShield is proud to continually support the ‘4 in 24’ Field Renovations,” said Brian O’Grady, vice president, BlueShield of Northeastern New York. “Year after year we see the positive impact these field renovations have on the children using the spaces and the community as a whole. Our company takes pride in encouraging children to learn the importance of making healthy choices, like playing and staying active, because we all know – Healthy Changes Everything.”

“With the continued loyal support of BlueShield of Northeastern New York, we are able to provide safe and well-maintained fields of play for the youth in our community, an initiative that is immensely important to us,” said ValleyCats Vice President/General Manager Rick Murphy.

Leagues interested in having their field considered for the ‘4 in 24’ or other Community Grounds Crew renovations must complete an application that can be found on the ValleyCats website, www.tcvalleycats.com. Leagues are required to submit photos of the field along with their application.

In order to be eligible for the ‘4 in 24’ renovation, applications must be returned by Monday, February 3. Those submitted beyond that date or not selected for the ‘4 in 24’, will remain in consideration for the Community Grounds Crew program, which will accept and evaluate applications on an ongoing basis.

The efforts of the Community Grounds Crew will be recognized at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium during the ValleyCats 2014 season. Youth leagues from across the area will take part in Youth Baseball Night tentatively scheduled for June 16 and Softball Night on June 24.

The ValleyCats’ field renovations have been an annual tradition since 2003 when the first field was officially renovated by the ‘Cats in South Troy, just one mile away from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Each year since, they have expanded upon its success.

Each project is also supported by the New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation. Contributions come from past events such as the Capital Region Craft Brewers Festival, hosted by the ValleyCats and Brown’s Brewing Company, and two corporate baseball tournaments that take place at “The Joe” including the Battle of the Beverages and the Capital Region Series.

Bisons given ‘Community Partnership Award’ by Parent Network of WNY

Team honored for support of individuals living with special needs

The Parent Network of WNY is proud to announce that this year’s recipient of the Community Partnership Award is the Buffalo Bisons. The award will be presented on Thursday, October 17 (7:00 p.m.) at the Alleyway Theatre before the group’s debut of the play, “Always October.”

The Community Partnership Award is presented every year to an agency, school, or person who has assisted individuals with special needs through their activities. The Bisons are an avid supporter of individuals with special needs. Their support of persons with disabilities is not a product of a special effort, rather, they include people with disabilities as members of the community and treat this as “business as usual.”

The Community Partnership Award is presented in conjunction with Parent Network’s annual Harvest Honors Fundraiser. Funds raised are utilized to educate families of children with disabilities about services and supports in the community.

As part of Harvest Honors we will be hosting a Silent Auction and Basket Raffle along with the Red Carpet premier of “Always October”. This ground-breaking play was co-written by Western New Yorkers Mary McLaughlin, Wanda Wilson and Beth Geyer, directed by Victoria Pérez with a cast comprised of both individuals with and without disabilities, as well as parents of those with disabilities.

The Harvest Honors fundraiser is on October 17th and will begin at 5:30pm with a cocktail reception, a silent auction/basket raffle and award ceremony. The main event at Harvest Honors will be the opening of “Always October”. The play will then continue its run until Sunday October 20th. All evening performances are at 7:30pm with a Sunday matinee at 2pm. The fundraiser/play will take place at Alleyway Theatre-1 Curtain Up Alleyway in the heart of Buffalo’s downtown theater district. DIVERSITY DAY ON CONEY ISLAND – AUGUST 19th

Brooklyn NY, August 14, 2013 – Last week, vandals defaced the statue of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese, located outside MCU Park in Coney Island with hateful words and symbols which have since been removed. In light of these recent events, the Cyclones and Alliance for Coney Island will join together with community leaders to host Diversity Day in Coney Island, for what will be a historic doubleheader on Monday, August 19th in conjunction with the Coney Island Flicks on the Beach screening of “42” later in the evening

Prior to the Brooklyn Cyclones taking on the Staten Island Yankees in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 PM, the Cyclones, along with The Jackie Robinson Foundation, The Jackie Robinson Little League, Major League Baseball and other local community leaders will host a rededication ceremony for the Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese statue, which stands as a monument to these men of “courage and conviction” as engraved on the base of the statue which was originally erected in November 2005.

“The events of last week were both heartbreaking and incomprehensible” said Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen. “But we are trying to turn the negative and disgusting actions of one person into a night of unity and understanding for an entire community. Over 60 years ago Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese stood resolute in the face of bigotry and hatred, and in a much smaller way we are trying to do the same thing.”

Following the ceremony and baseball game, there will be a special screening of the Warner Bros. movie “42” as part of the “Flicks on the Beach” Series presented by Alliance for Coney Island, Rooftop Films and NYC & Company. Guests will be invited to watch the critically-acclaimed film on a 40-foot screen on the sand of Coney Island near West 10th Street.

“We are proud to be screening the monumental film ‘42’ which provides a biography of Brooklyn hero Jackie Robinson. A silver lining to this offensive act is that Coney Island can band together and commemorate Robinson’s legacy during Diversity Day, and celebrate the strength of our community and the history of Brooklyn,” said Johanna Zaki, Alliance for Coney Island Director of Operations.

Due to a tremendous response from the community, the Muckdogs 2013 Youth Baseball Camp held on August 6th and 7th is completely filled up and registration is now closed. We will accept any mailed registration forms post-marked on July 30th. For those who did not sign up in time, please keep an eye out for the Muckdogs 2nd Annual Youth Baseball Camp in 2014.

Join us at Dwyer Stadium August 6th, 7th and 8th for our youth baseball camp!

Kids aged 6-14 will receive two days of on field instruction from the Muckdogs players and coaches on August 6th & 7th from 9am – 12pm, then on August 8th campers will be able to come back to Dwyer for a private autograph signing with the team 30 minutes before the gates open (5:30pm) and then be recognized on the field prior to the Muckdogs game vs. the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Rays affiliate).

Campers will also recieve a special t-shirt not available in the team store, a camp photo, two tickets to the August 8th game as well as daily lunch, all for ONLY $70!

Jamestown Jammers to Hold Can Food Drive

Jamestown, NY- For the fourth straight year, the Jamestown Jammers will team up with the Jamestown Chapter of the Credit Union Association of New York for a canned food drive. New this year, Harley-Davidson of Jamestown has joined the event to bring extra support to the Community. This drive will benefit the St. Susan Center in Jamestown and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Youth Organization in Dunkirk.

The food drive will take place at a Jammers game on July 18th against the Connecticut Tigers at 7:05 p.m. Items will start being collected at the gates when they open at 6:00pm. A Harley-Davidson trailer will be on site at Diethrick Park to collect non-perishable food items. All fans who donate will have a chance to win a wide array of prizes; the more items fans donate the more chances they will have to WIN! The prizes include amongst other items, $250 worth of Harley-Davidson items, autographed balls, and team signed bats.

Last year, the Jammers and the local credit unions combined to collect 500 pounds of food to benefit the St. Susan Center, which provides hot, nutritious meals to those in need and the CYO which also helps feed the hungry through its food closet program. In the past three years, over 1,250 pounds of food have been donated.

This year, the participating Credit Unions from the Jamestown Chapter are; Affinity One FCU, Cattaraugus County EFCU, Greater Chautauqua FCU, Inner Lakes FCU, Jamestown Area Community FCU, Jamestown Post Office ECU, Southern Chautauqua FCU, and SUNY Fredonia FCU to collect food for both food banks.

Tickets are available for next Thursday’s game at all of the Credit Union locations listed above, plus at Harley-Davidson of Jamestown’s store front. Fans need to bring their tickets to the park along with at least one non-perishable food item for admission to the game and a chance at the prizes being given out.

TROY, NY – This ValleyCats Season is sure to be one of the most exciting to date! The ValleyCats have partnered with BlueShield of Northeastern New York to welcome the Healthy Zone Concessions to the Joseph L. Bruno stadium.

Rather than a traditional vendor at the stadium, the Healthy Zone Concessions promises to live up to BlueShield’s slogan “Healthy Changes Everything”. The Healthy Zone will provide spectators with healthy snack and meal options such as apple nachos, salads and wraps, Greek yogurt and other healthy treats.

“The athletes aren’t the only people in the stadium that we want to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Brian O’Grady, vice president of BlueShield. “Our hope is that the Healthy Zone Concessions will encourage spectators to take advantage of healthier meal and snack options while attending a baseball game.”

‘Cats to host ALS Fundraiser, with special guest Tommy John

Event aims to raise awareness and funds for the fight against this disease, while paying tribute to those fighting for our county

TROY, NY – The Tri-City ValleyCats have partnered with Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the National ALS Registry and the ALS Association to hold a fundraiser at “The Joe” on Saturday, July 6. Former Yankee great, Tommy John will be in attendance as part of a meet & greet opportunity and ALS Fundraiser Dinner in the ValleyCats Picnic Pavilion. Proceeds from this dinner will be donated to the ALS Association.

This event is part of a season-long partnership between Minor League Baseball and the ALS Association to strikeout Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Part of this initiative is to support the men and women serving in our armed forces, as those in the military are twice as likely to develop Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

The ValleyCats will pay tribute to our military heroes throughout the July 4th homestand and help raise awareness of Lou Gehrig’s Disease as the National ALS Registry will be on hand with a table for each of these games, including Veterans Night on July 5th. The National ALS Registry is a research project that may help scientists find the cause, treatment and cure for the disease, which is fatal in an average of just two to five years.

Tickets for the fundraiser are just $30 and are limited. Included is a meet & greet with Tommy John from 4:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., entry into the ALS Fundraiser Dinner from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., a premium box ticket to that night’s game vs. the Lowell Spinners, a ValleyCats cap and a commemorative ALS camo ball.

Brown’s Brewing Company will also be joining the ValleyCats to support this cause as a proud participant in Ales for ALS, a national fundraising project to help discover a treatment for ALS. Brown’s has brewed a special, limited edition batch of Iron Horse Ale in honor of legendary Yankee great, Lou Gehrig. In the spirit of the its baseball namesake and in conjunction with the Strike Out ALS event on July 6th, Iron Horse Ale will be exclusively available at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium during ValleyCats games while supply lasts. Brown’s Brewing Company and the Tri-City ValleyCats are donating a portion of the proceeds of Iron Horse Ale to the 501c3 nonprofit  ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), the world’s leading ALS research organization.
