RiverDogs Host Run Charlie Run 5K

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston RiverDogs will host the 15th annual Run Charlie Run 5K presented by Fleet Feet Sports on Saturday, May 19. The event starts at 4 p.m. at Joe Riley
Park and culminates with a home plate finish.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the Campaign for MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

“We’re excited to once again welcome our hundreds of runners to our annual 5K for a memorable run and ballgame later that night,” said RiverDogs Director of Special Events Lisa Dingman. “It’s a great way to spend a Saturday with the run and a RiverDogs game while benefitting a great cause.”

Early registration for the event is $30 and includes entry to the race, a ball cap, a post-race dinner and beer, and a ticket to the night’s game against the Columbia Fireflies. Runners can register to the event by following the link HERE.

Say No to Drugs Day at City Stadium

Lynchburg, Va. – The Lynchburg Hillcats will host their 30th annual Say No to Drugs Day at City Stadium on Wednesday, April 18 (tomorrow) when the Hillcats take on the Frederick Keys.

Although many Lynchburg City and surrounding schools have been closed the last several days due to power outages from the recent storm, the event will still continue as scheduled. 

Even if your school is closed tomorrow, the Hillcats invite students, family, faculty and staff to attend tomorrow’s game FREE of charge. Those associated with the schools can pick up free tickets at the City Stadium box office.

The educational programming starts at 10 a.m., and will include Hillcats players, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Department, and Hillcats General Manager Ronnie Roberts. The Sheriff’s Department will be bringing a K-9 unit to demonstrate their drug sniffing dogs. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

“Say No to Drugs Day has been a fixture in the Hillcats promotional schedule for three decades and we’re looking forward to hosting this event as scheduled despite some unforeseen circumstances,” Hillcats General Manager Ronnie Roberts said. “As an organization, we are proud to be able to continue this tradition for many years to come and hopefully we will continue to make a difference in students’ lives.”

Wednesday is also Winning Wednesday, where every fan will win a free ticket to the next Wednesday Hillcats home game.

Tortugas Partner with Blossoms Workforce Academy

DAYTONA BEACH, FL –The Daytona Tortugas are partnering with the Blossoms Workforce Academy for the 2018 season, as announced Tuesday afternoon. Blossoms Workforce Academy was founded with a mission to develop a workforce that has been empowered with knowledge, skills and ethical work practice to promote the best interests of local healthcare providers and general businesses within Volusia County and to the wider State of Florida,and will be sponsoring all mound visits at Jackie Robinson Ballpark during the 2018 season.

Legends Announce Whitaker Bank Ballpark to be Tobacco Free

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – The Lexington Legends announced today that Whitaker Bank Ballpark, along with all city-owned and operated ball fields, will be tobacco free. In conjunction with Tobacco Free Kentucky and the City of Lexington, the news was announced at Media Day at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

“Almost 15 years ago, Lexington became the first city in the state to enact a smoke-free ordinance. The results were almost immediate, with fewer smoking related emergency room visits and a better quality of life. This new tobacco-free policy at Whitaker Bank Ballpark and our city-owned and operated ball fields is a logical next step,” said the honorable Jim Gray, Mayor of Lexington.

Whitaker Bank Ballpark will be a smoke free environment for the first time in the stadium’s history. Baseball and tobacco have gone hand in hand for decades, with chew being the most noticeable tobacco product, but new initiatives, led by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, are trying to change that. Extended use of tobacco products including cigarettes, chew, snuff and other products have been proven to have long-term negative health effects.

“Lexington is once again taking the lead on health when it comes to protecting residents from the dangers of tobacco use,” said Ben Chandler, President and CEO of the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. “By making all city ball fields tobacco-free, including Whitaker Bank Ballpark, Mayor Gray and Andy Shea are sending a powerful message to young baseball players looking to emulate their hometown baseball idols: tobacco use is unsafe, unhealthy, and not at all cool.”

Lexington has been on the forefront of enacting tobacco-free legislation in the state of Kentucky, with Whitaker Bank Ballpark and the Legends taking the next step of prohibiting tobacco products inside the gates. Previous smoking areas, such as behind the bleachers in left field, will no longer be designated smoking areas. There will also be no smoking on the suite level. All types of tobacco products such as cigarettes and vapes, are not allowed.

“We are very proud to be one of the first Minor League Baseball facilities in the country to go tobacco-free. Being one of the premiere family entertainment options in the region, we felt this move had to be made. We are honored to lead the way in making the Central Kentucky community a healthier and happier place to live,” said Legends President/CEO, Andy Shea.

Fans will be able to smoke outside the facility on the first base side, behind the Stables, in the fenced in area.

Trustmark Park to become smoke-free in 2018

PEARL, MS – The Mississippi Braves have announced plans for a smoke-free Trustmark Park in 2018.

This initiative will be implemented with the support of Merit Health and The Mississippi Tobacco Quitline.

The smoke-free policy will prohibit smoking in the ballpark, including electronic devices and will apply to all Mississippi Braves staff, players and fans.

Trustmark Park becoming a smoke-free ballpark is part of a movement by the M-Braves to help exemplify a healthy environment and create a positive model for our youth to follow.

If you find you are ready to quit smoking, help is available. Merit Health and the MS Tobacco Quitline can provide resources to assist anyone that is ready to stop using tobacco.

PawSox Foundation to Present “A Veterans Home Run: A 5k Walk ‘N Run” on Saturday Morning, May 19

The PawSox Foundation will again present “A Veterans Home Run: A 5K Walk ‘n’ Run” to benefit those who have served in the military. The 7th annual event is scheduled for Saturday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m., starting and finishing at McCoy Stadium. Participants receive complimentary t-shirts, food, and tickets to a PawSox game.

The event will benefit Operation Stand Down, which serves 67,800 veterans and their families, as well as other organizations. The PawSox will also again recognize the “21 Heroes,” the Pawtucket veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War.

One of the premier road races in the area, the PawSox 5K will start from the McCoy Stadium parking lot, weave through the streets of downtown Pawtucket, and finish with “a touch of home” on the PawSox’ actual baseball diamond.

“We have enjoyed our community partnerships with Operation Stand Down, 21 Heroes, and the many organizations who provide needed care to our veterans,” said PawSox Senior Vice President/Club Counsel Kim Miner, who also oversees the foundation. “Our 2017 race had more than twice as many participants as our 2016 race, and we are eager to see the number increase again in 2018.”

Cougars 7th Annual 5K to Raise Funds for Special Olympics

GENEVA, Ill. – The Kane County Cougars announce the 7th annual Cougars 5K Run/Walk, presented by Northwestern Medicine Delnor Health & Fitness Center, which will take place on Saturday, May 19 at Northwestern Medicine Field beginning at 8 a.m. As the Cougars continue to grow their charitable outreach, proceeds from the race will benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

“It feels like a natural fit to team up with the Cougars for their 5K,” said Member Services Manager, Debra Neari. “We are proud to partner with them and continue our efforts to promote health and wellness for families throughout our community.”

The Cougars 5K, which features chip timing, will follow a course along both Kirk Road and Fabyan Parkway.

Children through age 12 can also register for the Cougars “Inside the Park Dash”, a half-mile fun run, which will take place at the conclusion of the 5K for $5 per child.

“We’re excited to carry on the tradition of the Cougars 5K for another season,” said Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich. “As we continue to grow our charitable outreach beyond the baseball field, we’re looking forward to contributing towards all the wonderful programs Special Olympics has to offer to their athletes and families.”

Open to competitive runners and recreational walkers, the Cougars host one of the most unique 5K events in the Chicagoland area with the finish line located at home plate inside Northwestern Medicine Field. Participants can be seen on the ballpark videoboard through a live-feed camera while high-fiving team mascots, Ozzie and Annie T. Cougar, down the final stretch of the race course. Families with children are encouraged to participate as strollers are permitted on the course with a discounted rate for participants between the ages of 5-18 years old.

Those registered by May 10 are guaranteed a commemorative race t-shirt featuring the Cougars 5K logo while all participants will receive a complimentary ticket voucher for a 2018 Cougars game. The top three male and female finishers in 14 age groups will receive a custom race medal courtesy of Creative Awards and Products, Inc. in Bartlett, Ill.

Following the race, participants can enjoy a variety of refreshments including a complimentary hot dog or brat and beer for those 21 & older.

Keys Contribute More Than $200,000 to Local Community in 2017

FREDERICK, MD-With the holiday season upon us, the Frederick Keys are excited to look back on 2017 as another outstanding year for community involvement. This year, the Keys worked hand-in-hand with a myriad of groups on community initiatives and assisted in countless fundraising efforts.

In 2017, the Keys contributed more than $200,000 to the local community. This benefited non-profits, local schools and libraries, the military and other worthy causes. The Keys also donated over $150,000 in in-kind gifts and raised over $20,000 for local non-profit organizations through in-stadium fundraising. This supported local non-profit groups including the United Way, Heartly House, Habitat For Humanity, Blessings in a Backpack and The Police Activities League. Funds were also raised for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Throughout the season, the Keys work with different organizations to benefit local non-profits and other worthy causes. For the third straight season, BGE Home and the Keys partnered on “Make a Difference Monday.” During each Monday game, a different 501 (c) (3) organization was given 25 tickets to see the Keys play to go along with a pre-game interview, a ceremonial first, a marketing table on the concourse and a :20 public address announcement. Among the groups who participated were the Team Up for 1 Foundation and the Frederick County Humane Society.

Other year-long programs which benefited local non-profits included Walks for a Cause and Pack the Park. Each time a Keys player walked, Keeney and Basford Funeral Homes donated $10 to Frederick Keys Care. Another staple of the Keys community involvement, Pack the Park enables charities to raise funds through ticket sales as well as a 50/50 raffle. Pack the Parks take place on Fridays and Saturday’s to maximize the organization’s exposure. Other benefits include a first pitch and a chance to speak on the field before the game.

Some groups have specific nights where their cause is recognized. These included Strike Out Stroke Night, Deaf & Hard of Hearing Night, Knock Tobacco Out of the Park Day and Cancer Awareness Night. Through working with Frederick Memorial Hospital’s Stroke & Chest Pain Division, the Keys were able to spread awareness of strokes, how to avoid them and be alerted to when someone could be having one.

For Deaf and Hard of Hearing Night, the Keys worked with the Maryland School for the Deaf to promote ways to communicate with individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. Students from the school also created special sign language videos with Keys players. Knock Tobacco Out of the Park Day included a pre-game presentation about tobacco use, as well as a video and slates throughout the game explaining the dangers of using tobacco. For this night, the Keys partnered with the Tobacco Free Coalition.

Each season the Keys join forces with the American Cancer Society to recognize cancer survivors and to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. Survivors receive a free ticket to the game, while ACS sells t-shirts and luminaries as part of a unique fireworks show. This includes a photo montage on the video board of cancer fighters, in conjunction with the organization’s Cancer Has a Face Program. Keys Players and Coaches also donned special lavender jerseys with words of encouragement such as hope, faith and love. These were auctioned off during the game, with proceeds benefiting ACS.

To promote educational and wellness initiatives, the Keys work frequently with the Frederick County Public School System. In 2017, the team introduced the Report Card Program. Children who received A’s, A equivalents or improved grades on their report cards received two complimentary tickets to a Keys game in April as well as a bumper sticker showing their accomplishments.

Meanwhile, this past season just under 2,000 sixth grade students filled Nymeo Field for STEM Day. Each student attendee received an assignment packet with questions based on game action, information from concourse vendors and videos featuring Keys mascot Keyote and players. The Keys and FCPS also work together on Family Fitness Weekend. Children who are active for one hour a day receive a voucher to a Keys weekend game.

Once again the Keys and Frederick County Public Libraries worked together in 2017. The team provided local libraries in Frederick and in surrounding counties with nearly 70,000 summer reading vouchers. Students who complete their summer reading assignments receive a voucher to attend a game in either July or August and receive recognition during a pre-game parade.

A long-standing goal of the Keys has also been to give back to active and retired military members. One way this is accomplished is through Fort Detrick Night. A US Army Medical Command Installation based in Frederick, Fort Detrick is the city’s largest employer. The Keys work closely with the base to put on a night for military members and their families. Tickets are provided at a discounted rate, while Fort Detrick brings out an anthem singer, color guard and military VIPs to give on-field presentations.

Jackie Robinson Ballpark to Become Tobacco Free

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – On Thursday, November 16th, the Daytona Tortugas will be making a special announcement regarding Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Daytona Tortugas will announce plans for a tobacco free ballpark in 2018 with the support of community partners including the Tobacco Free Volusia County Partnership, One Voice for Volusia, Bethune-Cookman University, the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, and others.

 

In 2017, the Daytona Tortugas have welcomed over 175,000 fans to Tortugas games, charity runs, concerts and many other events at the ballpark. The Tortugas mission is to provide affordable, family-fun entertainment to Volusia and Flagler Counties, and the Central Florida Region. The Tobacco Free Policy will prohibit tobacco use in the ballpark, including electronic devices and apply to all Tortugas staff, players and fans.

 

Jackie Robinson Ballpark becoming a tobacco free ballpark is part of a movement by the Tortugas to help exemplify a healthy environment and create a positive model for our youth to follow. Daytona Tortugas President, Ryan Keur stated “this is a big step for the Tortugas and Jackie Robinson Ballpark in our community. As the premier family destination for Volusia County, it’s important that we are role models in our community and provide a healthy, family-friendly atmosphere for our fans.” A Tobacco Free Florida booth will be present at the games, providing information on how to quit tobacco use.

 

The Tortugas will be celebrating this change with The Great American Smoke Out at The Jack on Thursday, November 16th, sponsored by Tobacco Free Florida and the State of Florida. To commemorate the event, the Tortugas will be holding a press conference and Mayor’s Luncheon. Interested community members are invited to attend and celebrate this initiative with the Tortugas and their mascot Shelldon. The event begins at 12:00 pm on Thursday, November 16th.

Biloxi Shuckers make major community impact in 2017

BIBiloxi ShuckersLOXI, MS – In a season marked by several on-field accomplishments in the third year of Minor League Baseball on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Biloxi Shuckers are most proud of their various community outreach efforts. From theme nights to jersey auctions, the Shuckers have made a financial and symbolic impact on their community throughout the 2017 season.

The Shuckers were nominated by the Minor League Baseball Community as a finalist for a prestigious “Golden Bobblehead” award for the “Best Community Promotion or Event” after helping with the Hattiesburg/Petal tornado relief efforts and William Carey vs. Biloxi Shuckers exhibition game. Shuckers’ employees traveled to Petal, Mississippi to assist cleanup crews. The tornado caused damage to the campus of nearby William Carey University, so the Shuckers scheduled a benefit exhibition game against the school’s baseball team before the first road trip of the season. The game raised $6,090 for the university’s tornado recovery efforts. This effort coupled with numerous other initiatives garnered the recognition.

In addition to the recognition by Minor League Baseball, the Shuckers were also a finalist for the Southern League’s Community Service Award.

Shuckers’ front office members laid the groundwork for a successful season with several other community initiatives. Employees laid sod at an athletic complex in Moss Point, Mississippi to revitalize the area’s youth baseball program.

In partnership with Walmart, the inaugural Shuckers “Hit the Books” reading program brought Schooner the Seagull to 17 schools and over 10,000 students to incentivize reading with Shuckers tickets as a reward.

Since their inception, the Shuckers have had a strong relationship with nearby Keesler Air Force Base and the substantial military presence on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That trend continued in 2017, as every Monday became “Military Monday” with special discounts for active and retired members of the armed forces. Special camouflage jerseys, worn every Monday and designed with input from Keesler staff, and were auctioned off at the end of the season with proceeds benefiting local military causes.

Throughout the season, the Shuckers have partnered with several charitable organizations to raise money and awareness for deserving local causes. Three additional jersey auctions earlier this season have brought in money for the March of Dimes, Mississippi Center for Autism, and Favre4Hope breast cancer research.

The Shuckers have also hosted a Christmas in July toy drive for the Uplift Foundation, Seatbelt Safety night for the K&J Foundation (started by team photographer Brian Pearse), and Skin Cancer Awareness night in partnership with the MiLB Charities Sun Safety Initiative.

Youth outreach was not limited to the “Hit the Books” program. The Shuckers turned their two “Education Day” games into vocational field trips, with visits from Biloxi Fire and Police, NASA, the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Department of Marine Resources, University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, and Mississippi State University’s Coastal Research Extension.

Former New York Mets catcher and Biloxi native Barry Lyons was formally invited into the Shuckers organization as an ambassador prior to the 2017 season, and the team assisted him in the creation of the first series of Shuckers Kids Clinics for local youth. In addition, the “Field of Dreams” program allowed more than 100 young baseball and softball players from the area to take the field alongside Shuckers players for the national anthem.

In partnership with the Knights of Columbus, the Biloxi Shuckers collected 765 lbs of food/product during a food drive on Sunday, July 30th for them to distribute in the community.

In addition to these widespread efforts, the Shuckers have also made numerous player and mascot appearances in the community over the course of the season. The Shuckers in-kind donations and in-stadium fundraising initiatives have raised $155,455.91 for over 100 charitable organizations. The Biloxi Shuckers understand the responsibility that comes with their platform in the community and are determined to make a positive impact on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

In addition to monetary contributions, the Biloxi Shuckers front office staff have logged 265 community volunteer hours thus far in 2017. Those hours have been spent working with area schools, NCBC’s Child Development Center, Humane Society of South Mississippi, VA Medical Center, Loaves and Fishes and cleanup efforts from Hurricane Harvey.

PRMC’S Drive-Thru Flu Clinic Returns on Thursday, October 12 for a 23rd Season

Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s Drive-Thru Flu Clinic is returning for a 23rd season on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Arthur W. Perdue (Shorebirds) Stadium at the intersection of Route 50 and Hobbs Road in Salisbury, Maryland from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Vaccinations will be administered to individuals 13 years of age or older (13-17 please bring a parent or legal guardian to sign consent). A physician’s order is not necessary. A donation of $10.00 per vaccination is requested (cash only; exact amount is appreciated).

Flu vaccinations are encouraged for persons over the age of 65, people with heart or lung disorders, immunosuppressant diseases or diabetes. Participants are encouraged to wear a short sleeved shirt that will provide easy access to the upper arm.

AHA 5K Walk/Run at Fifth Third Field Sept. 23

Heart Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, September 23rd

Dayton, Ohio – Fifth Third Field will host the American Heart Association’s Greater Dayton 5K Heart Walk/Run on Saturday, September 23rd from 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon. A signature event of the American Heart Association, the Heart Walk/Run promotes physical activity and healthy living in an environment that’s fun for the whole family. All proceeds will go toward funding research and education involving the reduction of heart disease and stroke. Individuals or teams can register online at heart.org/daytonwalk or by calling Ellen Duncil at (937) 401-4861.

The Walk/Run is specifically designed for children and adults of all ages and abilities. Day-of registration starts at 7:30 a.m., which is also when the gates open at Fifth Third Field. Before the event begins, families can roam the concourse or enjoy a fun and interactive health and wellness fair on the plaza. Sponsors will give out heart-healthy snacks and allow attendees to check blood pressure and help figure out body mass index (BMI). There will be inflatable games for children to enjoy and Dragons mascots Heater and Gem will roam the concourse and take pictures with those in attendance.

Heart disease and stroke survivors are also encouraged to visit the survivor area, created especially for the “honored guests” of the Heart Walk. Special gifts will be available to survivors at the walk.

The annual Kids Fun Run/Walk will begin shortly after 8:30 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:00 a.m. The 5K Race and Heart Walk is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m.

PawSox and Jordan’s Furniture Donate Record Amount of Equipment to the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket

For the fourth year in a row, the PawSox teamed up with Jordan’s furniture and collected new/used baseball equipment during the 2017 season to benefit aspiring young baseball players at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket.

At every home game, fans were invited to donate equipment in red barrels that were located directly inside the Main Gate at McCoy Stadium. This season the barrels filled up quicker than ever, and the PawSox were able to donate more equipment than they ever have to the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket.

“This equipment changes lives,” said Jim Hoyt, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket. “We’d once again like to thank the Pawtucket Red Sox and Jordan’s Furniture for their generosity.”

“Dropping the equipment off to the Boys & Girls Club at the end of each season is something that we look forward to every year,” said PawSox Director of Communications & Community Relations, Joe Bradlee. “We’re able to see first-hand the impact we are making on so many young athletes in the area.”

The PawSox would like to thank our fans who came out to the ballpark this season and made a difference for our local youth.

Beatty to host Fall Baseball Camp at BB&T Ballpark

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Sept. 13, 2017) – The Winston-Salem Dash are teaming with former Dash outfielder CJ Beatty to hold a Fall Baseball Camp at BB&T Ballpark on Saturday, October 14.

Players ages 5-12 will work on basic fundamentals with Beatty, who will also hold discussions with players on mental skills and parents on future planning throughout the event. Check in is set for 8 a.m., with camp running from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.

Call (336) 714-6865 to secure your child’s spot in this exciting camp, which costs just $50 per person. The Fall Baseball Camp is a rain or shine event.

Beatty is a native of Winston-Salem and an alumnus of North Carolina A&T State University, where he majored in Business and catapulted his baseball career. He was selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2014, Beatty joined the Chicago White Sox organization and played for the Dash in both 2014 and 2015.

Beatty is an international speaker who specializes in teaching people to believe in themselves when nobody else believes in them. Since 2009, he has traveled around the country and Australia hosting baseball camps, holding baseball workshops and delivering powerful messages. People have dubbed him as “The Baseball Motivator.” His YouTube channel has nearly two million views and has reached people in more than 220 countries. Mayor James A. Diossa teams up with PawSox for “PLAY BALL SUMMER” Initiative

Central Falls, RI – Mayor James A. Diossa and the Pawtucket Redsox will host Central Falls Youth youth in various baseball activities as part of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) continued support of the “PLAY BALL SUMMER” initiative, which focuses on the fun nature of baseball and encourages an active and healthy lifestyle for kids in all communities. During the Summer of 2017 mayors are implementing the initiative throughout cities with the goal of strengthening the connection of communities with the National Pastime.

The National Mayor’s Play Ball initiative will at Higginson Avenue Sports Complex will take place from 10am-12pm. PawSox players will be out running drills and competitions for youth of all ages including a baseball game and home run derby.

Mayors across the country are hosting similar activities to engage citizens, families, and city departments to organize individual and community events (such as playing catch, running bases in the backyard, family gatherings, park and recreation activities, business-supported activities, etc.). These activities will be focused on exposing children to the sport of baseball and providing a fun opportunity to remain active throughout the summer.

“Baseball is America’s favorite past time and a great way to engage our youth, especially in urban communities like Central Falls,” stated Mayor James A. Diossa. “There is no better way to do so than together with the Pawtucket Red Sox. I’d like to thank the U.S. Conference of Mayors for this initiative.”

“The PawSox are happy to be teaming up with Mayor Diossa on this exciting and worthy initiative,” said PawSox Executive Vice President & General Manager, Dan Rea. “It’s our job to keep our local youth excited about baseball and we hope they have some fun with our ballplayers on Wednesday.”

Per Milb: “On May 18, MLB announced that baseball and softball combined to rank as the most participated team sports in the United States in 2016 (25 million participants), according to the annual Topline Participation Report produced by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). Overall baseball participation increased by 7.7 percent and slow-pitch softball participation increased by 8.1 percent in 2016, with casual participation in both baseball and slow-pitch softball showing the highest growth. In 2016, casual participation in baseball rose by 18.1 percent and slow-pitch softball increased by 12.4 percent. Casual participation in baseball and slow-pitch softball is up 34 percent over the last five years. When combined, baseball and softball (fast-and slow-pitch) have more casual participants than any other sport (10.25 million).”

The PLAY BALL initiative with the USCM focuses on recruiting cities to promote and support PLAY BALL through the use of baseball-related activities. Primary targets are cities with Major League and Minor League Baseball clubs, although the initiative toolkit and self-reporting strategy will be electronically distributed to hundreds of cities across the country with the assistance of Major League Baseball.

Local leaders and citizens will report their activities to PLAYBALL.org via usmayors.org. The site provides parents, coaches and kids with information on how to get involved with PLAY BALL activities as well as how to join community baseball leagues. Coaching tips and video tutorials from Major League Baseball players and coaches are also a prominent component of the site.
