WilmingtonBlueRocks_2013-05-15

WILMINGTON, DE – The Wilmington Blue Rocks are pleased to announce that Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County will hold a 50/50 raffle at each of the remaining Blue Rocks home games during the 2013 season. Proceeds from each raffle go to benefit the Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.

“This is a brand new concept that will be introduced to our fans, but it is something that has worked at other major league and minor league professional sports venues,” said Kevin P. Linton, director of community affairs for the Blue Rocks. “Fans will have the opportunity to participate in something that is very economical and could win them some extra money, all while supporting a great organization here in the Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County, here in Delaware.”

The 50/50 raffle will be executed by 50/50 Central, a company based out of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Fans can purchase tickets two different ways while visiting Frawley Stadium during each Blue Rocks game. Fans may purchase tickets at the 50/50 kiosk, which is located on the main concourse across from the Quarry Team Store. Additionally, people can purchase tickets throughout the game from the seats from a 50/50 vendor walking around the seating area.

Tickets can be purchased from the time gates open until the seventh inning. The 50/50 drawing will take place at the end of the seventh inning, via an electronic draw. Tickets can be purchased in the following increments: 1 for $2, 3 for $5, 10 for $10 and 40 for $20. Fans do not need to be present to win the raffle jackpot each night. Jackpots will vary depending on the sales of the tickets each game.

“We’re pleased to be working with the Wilmington Blue Rocks on this exciting fundraising endeavor,” said HFHNCC Chief Executive Officer Kevin L. Smith. We know the Blue Rocks fans and how they’ve supported various community groups throughout their 21 seasons here in Delaware and we’re looking forward to receiving their support.”

Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has been building affordable housing with low-income families since 1986. Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has built more than 200 homes in areas throughout New Castle County including the City of Wilmington, Middletown, Newark, New Castle and St. Georges. As a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, it is among the top three largest affiliates in the Northeast (of over 210 affiliates from Delaware to Maine) in terms of home construction. Through its unique approach, Habitat for Humanity helps low-income families break the cycle of poverty through the stability and empowerment gained through homeownership.

The first raffle drawing will take place on Friday, May 17 during the 7:05 p.m. Blue Rocks’ game with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, with a spectacular fireworks show to follow the game. For tickets, and mini-plan information, call 302-888-BLUE.

RIVER CATS TO HONOR VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TEAM

On-field recognition ceremony scheduled for Friday, May 17

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento River Cats will honor the heroic act of the Valley High School baseball team this Friday, May 17, with an on-field ceremony, in addition to treating the entire team to a night of baseball at Raley Field.

The Valley High School team received national attention recently for pulling a car off a young girl and saving her life on Tuesday, May 7. According to the Sacramento Bee, players from Valley High’s varsity and JV baseball teams heard a girl screaming and came to her aid, pulling a sedan off her and allowing their coaches to pull her from underneath the car.

In addition to the on-field recognition prior to Friday’s 7:05 p.m. game, the Cats are treating both teams and their coaches to complimentary tickets to Friday’s game against the Oklahoma City RedHawks.

Valley High School co-head coach Brett Sawyer said that his team is “beyond ecstatic” for the opportunity to take his players to Raley Field this weekend.

“John Wooden once said, Sports don’t build character, they reveal it,” Sawyer said. “The Valley baseball team exuded character in the truest form that day, and the school, administration, community and coaching staff are proud of each and every one of them.”

The Cats open an eight-game homestand beginning Thursday, May 16, at 7:05 p.m. During the homestand, fans will be treated to two nights of fireworks, two Miller Lite Thirsty Thursdays, and the first of nine bobblehead giveaways of the season, scheduled for Sunday, May 19, when 2,500 fans will receive Barry Zito bobbleheads. CCSNH, Fisher Cats Foundation Award $5,000 to Local Schools

May 10, 2013

Eight schools recognized for perfect Reading Challenge participation

New-Hampshire-Fisher-Cats-logo-2013The Community College System of New Hampshire (CCSNH) and the Fisher Cats Foundation awarded $5,000 to local schools on Monday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. A total of eight schools were honored on the field for having one-hundred-percent of their students complete the Fisher Cats Reading Challenge presented by the Community College System of New Hampshire during the 2012-2013 academic year.

The eight schools from across New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts were recognized as finFisher-Cats-Foundation-logo-2013alists during Monday’s ceremony for having every student complete the challenge by reading five books outside their normal school curriculum. Each school was entered into a drawing to win one of three cash prizes, totaling $5,000, from the Fisher Cats Foundation. Salisbury Elementary School earned the top prize of $3,000; Smyth Road Elementary and St. John Regional Junior High School  were each awarded a $1,000 prize for their all-encompassing efforts during the challenge.

Community-College-System-of-NH-logo“This is a tremendous success for the faculty and students at each and every one of these schools,” said Fisher Cats president Rick Brenner. “We congratulate them for putting in the time and effort to meet our challenge this year. Their dedication shows a true commitment to the improvement of their education both in the classroom and at home.”

“New Hampshire’s Community Colleges are proud to be part of this effort to highlight the importance of literacy to New Hampshire students,” said Shannon Reid, Director of Communications for CCSNH. “The Reading Challenge involves students, parents, and teachers in an effort that is both purposeful and fun. The support of the Fisher Cats organization adds a special dimension and reward for the students who earn tickets in recognition of their reading achievement and for the schools that took home prizes.”

On Monday night, faculty members of Ashby Elementary School, Errol Consolidated School, Maple Avenue Elementary School, Milan Village School, Russell Elementary School, Smyth Road Elementary School, Salisbury Elementary School, and St. Joseph Regional Junior High School were all celebrated for their success.

During the school year, the Fisher Cats and CCSNH reached out to more than 55,000 students in approximately 150 schools to present the CCSNH Reading Challenge. Students needed to read at least five books outside of their normal school curriculum in order to earn individual recognition at a Fisher Cats game. Upon completing the challenge, each student received a pair of tickets, courtesy of CCSNH, to a Fisher Cats Reading Challenge game and the opportunity to participate in a pre-game parade around the field.

San Jose Giants to Host Second Annual Strikeout Violence Night

May 10, 2013

Country singer Matt Kennon returns to lead Junior Giants in Peace Pledge Ceremony

SAN JOSE, CA– On Friday, May 31, the San Jose Giants will present the second annual Strikeout Violence Night at Municipal Stadium. The evening will once again center on an anti-bullying message. The San Jose Giants are excited to welcome back country artist Matt Kennon who performed at the inaugural Strikeout Violence Night. Festivities will include a pregame performance by Kennon, presented by KRTY, and a Junior Giants Peace Pledge Ceremony. Following the pregame events, the San Jose Giants will take on the Stockton Ports at 7:00 PM.

Country rocker Matt Kennon is best known for his Top 20 hit “The Call,” shining a spotlight on the conversation to help prevent suicide. Since performing at last year’s inaugural Strikeout Violence Night, Kennon began a “Stop the Bull” campaign. This effort has taken him to six states and 55 schools, where he has impacted the lives of over 100,000 children. His single, “You Had to Pick On Me” was inspired when Matt ate lunch at the school where his sister works as a teacher’s aid and saw a young boy having a tough time. This experience led Kennon to take a stand against bullying. As part of this campaign, Kennon is available to attend one school in the San Jose area on May 31, prior to performing at Municipal Stadium. For more information, please contact Juliana Paoli, San Jose Giants Chief Marketing Officer, at (408) 380-4505 or email juliana@sjgiants.com.

“We are honored to be bringing Matt Kennon back to Municipal Stadium for the second annual Strikeout Violence Night,” said Paoli. “Kennon’s message last year not only impacted the hundreds of students in attendance, but spread through the community. It also spawned his ‘Stop the Bull’ campaign that has brought national attention to the preventable tragedy of bullying. This night is about driving home the message that the rules we learn on the field can be applied to all of our lives and we are excited to have Kennon be part of the evening.”

Junior Giants, the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, is a free, non-competitive and innovative baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-18 years old. Beyond baseball, Junior Giants focuses on the Four Bases of Character Development – Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and Teamwork – and offers programs in Education, Health and Violence Prevention. Each of the 20,000 Junior Giants in the program take the Junior Giants Peace Pledge vowing to Strikeout Violence in their communities by preventing bullying, standing up for what is right, praising people and helping others. Prior to the May 31 game, Junior Giants will take the Peace Pledge on the field and receive Strikeout Bullying wristbands. For more information, please visit jrgiants.org.

Friday, May 31 will also be a KRTY Family Friday at the ballpark. On May 30, Matt Kennon will perform An Evening of Music that Matters, with special appearance by Morgan Frazier, at Club Rodeo in San Jose. Country artist Morgan Frazier is a 19 year-old who has been performing since the age of five, sold her first CD when she was nine and signed a record deal at 16. Her not yet released single “Hey Bully”, was inspired by her experience as a bullied child. She is a People’s Choice Award winner who is best known for her debut single, “Yellow Brick Road”, which she released on Curb Records’ sister label, Sidewalk Records. For tickets and more information on this performance please visit krty.com. All fans who purchase a ticket will also receive free admission to the Strikeout Violence Night game on May 31.

May 7, 2013

Joint effort to include Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity

Winston-SalemDash_2013-05-07

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MAY 7, 2013) – The Winston-Salem Dash will partner with Lowe’s Home Improvement and Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County to assist in the annual Community Build on Saturday, May 18, from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dash players, staff members and front office team members will join volunteers from both Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity in the construction of five houses at two separate locations in the Winston-Salem area.

The build project is truly a community effort, so Dash fans are encouraged to help, too. To register as a volunteer, call Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County at (336) 765-8854. Everyone’s efforts will be honored during the Dash’s game on Saturday, July 27, at 7 p.m. A special video will be shown at BB&T Ballpark in dedication to this year’s Community Build.

The first location at 1825 Willow Oak Way features three houses, one of which is very near completion. The other two homes are at 922 and 924 Roosevelt Street. One of these houses, donated to Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, is undergoing a complete reconstruction, while another home will be built on the property. This donated lot was big enough to divide in half to accommodate a second house.

All five houses are at various stages of their construction, so volunteers will be assigned to a number of different tasks. Volunteers will assist with flooring, installing trusses, installing shingles into the roof and landscaping, among other things.

The Dash are continuing their drive toward one million fans at BB&T Ballpark, and this milestone will be reached sometime in May. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.

Squirrels Team Up With Hops For Heroes

Homefront IPA to be Served at The Diamond on May 23rd to Benefit Operation Homefront

RichmondFlyingSquirrels_2013-05-07

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Flying Squirrels will partner with Hops for Heroes to serve Homefront IPA at The Diamond during their game against the Trenton Thunder on Thursday, May 23rd. Homefront IPA will be available at the Squirrels’ Virginia Beer Taste the Local stand with all proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront. Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times.

Additionally, the team will hold a special media tasting of Homefront IPA at The Diamond on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 2 p.m. All media members are invited to attend/cover the tasting.

The goal of Hops for Heroes is to raise money and awareness for Operation Homefront through the sale of Homefront IPA and its relationship with the craft brewing and professional baseball industries.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Hops for Heroes to aid Operation Homefront,” said Flying Squirrels Vice President & COO Todd “Parney” Parnell. “We are constantly striving to honor and assist our military personnel, and to be able to do in such a creative and baseball-oriented way is extremely exciting for us.”

Hops for Heroes is a charitable effort started in 2011 in Seattle, Washington with Fremont Brewing Company and Chris and Phil Ray of Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU). Homefront IPA is a beer that was created by both breweries and brewed at Fremont in order to raise money for Operation Homefront. The beer was aged on unfinished Louisville Slugger maples bats and sold in both bottles and kegs throughout the Seattle area. 100% of the proceeds were given to the Washington Chapter of Operation Homefront. Once the bats were dried out, they were auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to Operation Homefront. For more information about Hops for Hereos, please visit http://www.hopsforheroes.com

“From its beginning in 2011, Homefront IPA has been all about beer, baseball, and most importantly, America’s Troops,” said Chris Ray of Center of the Universe Brewery Company. ” It debuted at Safeco Field in 2011, so it was only appropriate to continue that tradition with the Flying Squirrels in 2013. We believe the Flying Squirrels share the same belief in charity and community as we do, making it a perfect partnership.”

Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that assists the families of military personnel when they fall on hard times. From car payments to medical bills, Operation Homefront provides financial assistance for all types of family emergencies. For more information, please visit www.operationhomefront.com.

In 2012, Hops for Heroes expanded to include six total breweries from all over the country. Each brewery has been paired with their local Operation Homefront chapter. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go directly to the local chapters. In addition to the breweries, sponsors have volunteered to donate some of the hops and grains to lower the cost of producing the beer and thus increasing the donation to Operation Homefront. All proceeds from the event benefit the Children’s Development Center of Williamsport. Since 1923, the CDC has been providing services to children with special needs from birth to 21 years of age. Last year’s inaugural event attracted over 200 participants while raising $15,000 for the CDC.

“Since the affiliation between Hope Enterprises and the Children’s Development Center was finalized on last year, both organizations have been working together to enhance the service options for children and their families in our area. Having the support of our community with events such as the Cutters 5K Run, allows us to be better prepared to meet the needs of those to be served” according to Hope Enterprises President, Jim Campbell.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in seven male and female age categories. In addition to the prize awards, the top male and female finisher will throw out ceremonial first pitches at the Williamsport Crosscutters game that evening. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female walkers.

“We are proud to partner with the CDC on this event. It just keeps growing every year”, said Cutters Vice-President of Marketing Gabe Sinicropi. “We expect to raise over $10,000 for the CDC with this event.”

Registration is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. All participants receive a race t-shirt (while supplies last), and a ticket to the June 29th Crosscutters vs. Mahoning Valley Scrappers game at 7:05pm. Registration forms and more information are available online at crosscutters.com, at the Crosscutters offices at Bowman Field or the CDC offices located at 625 W. Edwin St.   Sponsorships of the event are also still available.
