Now accepting Scholarship Applications

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (April 10, 2017) – The South Bend Cubs officially published eligibility rules and the application form for $5,000 scholarships dedicated to softball and baseball players in 11 counties surrounding Four Winds Field in downtown South Bend today.

“We make no small plans here at Four Winds Field. Nor should the young athletes in this region who compete in softball and baseball,” commented Andrew T. Berlin, Chmn./Owner of the South Bend Cubs. “These scholarships are a significant way to show our support of future leaders and the game we all love at the same time. They’re not just for current athletes who will go on to play on varsity teams in college. They’re for any high school senior athlete who intends to continue his or her education full time after high school-whether they continue competing at the varsity level or not.”

In 2016, the South Bend Cubs awarded five scholarships worth $5,000 each to high school seniors from Edwardsburg, MI, Bremen, LaPorte, South Bend and Walkerton, IN. Two of the recipients were softball players, three were baseball players.

Applications for the 2017 South Bend Cubs Scholarships will be accepted from April 10 through May 31. Up to five (5) $5,000 scholarships will be granted. A full set of rules, eligibility requirements and an application form can be found online at www.1stsourcebankperformancecenter.com

“We want to make sure people understand two things about these scholarships that are very important,” said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. “These are not just baseball scholarships. There are over 1,600 colleges with softball programs in the United States, so we hope to see as many softball applicants as baseball. Also, we want people to know we’re doing our part to help build a new baseball and softball dynasty in this region. That’s what the 1st Source Bank Performance Center here at Four Winds Field is all about-year-round professional pitching, conditioning, fielding and at-bat training with professional instructors. The Chicago Cubs and every amateur player and coach in the region are excited about this facility-it’s one of the best in the country.”

Applications for the 2017 South Bend Cubs Scholarships cannot be made by e-mail or via any type of paid delivery or postal service. All applicants must deliver their applications in person to the 1st Source Bank Performance Center at the corner of South Street and Lafayette Boulevard in downtown South Bend.

Authentic, Game-Worn TinCaps Jerseys Up For Auction

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Ever wanted to have the jersey of a Major Leaguer? Or the jersey of one of baseball’s top prospects before they make it big? Maybe you just want a jersey with your favorite number on the back. Either way, now’s your chance.

 

The Fort Wayne TinCaps are auctioning off authentic, game-worn jerseys that fans can bid for online, with proceeds benefiting the TinCaps CARE program.

 

The auction is now live on TinCapsJersey.com and will run until Friday, March 31 (5 p.m.). Bidding for each jersey begins at $50 and goes up by $5 increments.

 

The jerseys being auctioned are the team’s previous green alternate tops, featuring the apple logo on the front and uniform number on the back. These jerseys were also worn regularly during batting practice from 2013-2016.

 

Over the past four seasons, current big leaguers like Trea Turner, Joe Ross, Mallex Smith, Zach Eflin, and Hunter Renfroe wore these jerseys – not to mention Pitching Coach Burt Hooton and former manager José Valentín. The same goes for rising prospects such as Anderson Espinoza, Cal Quantrill, Jake Nix, Luis Urias, Eric Lauer, Michael Gettys, Jake Bauers, and Max Fried. The TinCaps are committed to being a positive force in the community. The mission of TinCaps CARE (Community, Activity, Recreation, and Education) is to give back to citizens around the region through outreach, programs, events, fundraising, and partnerships with local charitable organizations. Perhaps the most impactful of the TinCaps CARE programs allows members of the Fort Wayne community that would otherwise not have the opportunity to attend a game to come out to Parkview Field. During the 2016 season, more than 2,000 tickets were donated through the TinCaps CARE program, including tickets for Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Boys & Girls Club, and many other deserving community organizations.  

 

As in the past, the TinCaps will also have several auctions for specialty jerseys worn on theme nights during the 2017 season.

 

The TinCaps will don their new batting practice jerseys when they warm up for their 2017 home opener at Parkview Field on Saturday, April 8 (6:05 p.m.) against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays). South Bend Cubs to offer Peanut-Free Suite on May 7

SOUTH BEND, IN – A day at Four Winds Field should be a fun, exciting experience, but that may be a challenge if you have a peanut allergy. On Sunday, May 7, the South Bend Cubs will offer a peanut-free area in the Old National Bank Home Plate Suite to coincide with Food Allergy Awareness Month.

Food Allergy Awareness Month helps educate the public about food allergies, a potentially life-threatening medical condition. An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from food allergies, according to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). Peanut allergies are among the most common food allergies and according to studies funded by FARE, the number of U.S. children with peanut allergies more than tripled between 1997 and 2008.

“There are quite a few baseball fans that do not get to experience a day at the ballpark due to their peanut allergy,” said Team President Joe Hart. “In order to provide a sterile, peanut free environment, our staff follows a strict cleaning process that removes all allergens from the Old National Bank Home Plate Suite to ensure our fans with peanut allergies can enjoy the game.”

Tickets are only $19.00 and include a seat in the peanut-free Old National Bank Home Plate Suite, South Bend Cubs hat, and a ballpark buffet of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and soft drinks. Meijer Baseball Academy Registration Now Open

SOUTH BEND, IN – Four Winds Field, the home of the South Bend Cubs, will transform into a training ground for young baseball players this July when Cubs players and coaches become instructors for the 2017 Meijer Baseball Academy.

There will be two academy training sessions to help keep the camp size smaller and allow more interaction with the players and coaches. Session one will be held July 12 through July 14 and session two runs July 26 through July 28. Registration is open to children from 6 to 12 years of age. Instruction from players and coaches will be based on the age and skill level of each participant. Throughout the three-day session participants will learn about hitting, pitching, fielding (infield and outfield), catching, and base running.

“This is a great opportunity for young players,” South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart said. “We’re excited to provide an opportunity for aspiring players to learn from pro ball-players within the Cubs organization.”

The registration fee for one, three-day session is $125.00 per child. All attendees will receive a Meijer Baseball Academy t-shirt, a South Bend Cubs hat, lunch after each day of camp, and four (4) tickets to a South Bend Cubs game where all academy campers will participate in a pre-game recognition on the field.

“One of our team slogans is ‘The road to the World Series starts in South Bend,'” Hart said. “We want to bring that slogan to our Baseball Academy so hopefully one day we’ll see a few of these youngsters playing professional baseball.”

Check-in for the first day of each session will begin at 8:30 a.m. ET. Camps will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., with lunch at 11:50 a.m.

South Bend Cubs to Host Polar Plunge in 2017

SOUTH BEND, IN – Four Winds Field will host the South Bend Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Indiana on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. with the plunge beginning at 12:00 p.m. followed immediately by the After Splash Bash in the Pepsi Stadium Club.

“Special Olympics Indiana is really looking forward to holding our first-ever Polar Plunge in South Bend,” said Special Olympics Indiana President and CEO Michael Furnish. “We’re extremely lucky to have a partner like the South Bend Cubs who knows how to bring the community together and create a positive atmosphere.”

“We are incredibly proud to host this event,” said Director of Media and Promotions Chris Hagstrom-Jones. “To help stimulate donations, the person who raises the most money for the South Bend Polar Plunge will receive four tickets to a South Bend Cubs home game and the opportunity to throw out the first pitch of that game.”

To participate in the 2017 Michiana Polar Plunge, individuals or groups must raise a “bear” minimum of $75 in pledges. All funds raised will benefit Special Olympics Indiana. Participants can register as an individual or gather friends, family members, co-workers, civic group or school group and register as a team.

TRIBE TO CELEBRATE ARMED FORCES MAY 16

On May 16, Armed Forces Day, fans in attendance for the Indianapolis Indians vs. Norfolk Tides baseball game, will be treated to several unique experiences including Tribe players donning camouflage jerseys, a postgame fireworks show, and the opportunity to support advance education opportunities for Indiana National Guard members.

Using Qtego Auction Technology and via one’s mobile phone, Indians fans will be able to bid on the jerseys worn by the players and coaches via a special auction. Proceeds will help fund WGU Indiana scholarships for Indiana National Guard members.

Once registered, Qtego’s service instantly informs participants of the current high bid on an item of interest or notifies they have been outbid.

“This is a fun, unique way for all Indians fans everywhere, both at Victory Field or not, to connect with our players while supporting education opportunities for Hoosier soldiers,” said Indians Senior Marketing and Communications Manager Jon Glesing.

Armed Forces Day is a national day of observance in the United States on the third Saturday of May each year. Indiana currently has 16,000 active duty National Guard members. TinCaps Reading Program Reaches Record Numbers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Thanks to Longe Optical and PBS39 (WFWA), the TinCaps Reading Program has reached new heights in 2015. The influence of local partners will be on full display at Wednesday’s 11:05 a.m. TinCaps game when Parkview Field is set to host approximately 4,000 school children – a record number at one game.

Longe Optical, the exclusive eye care provider of the TinCaps, became the presenting sponsor of the TinCaps Reading Program in 2014. As a result of the commitment of Longe Optical’s four Fort Wayne locations, the program now has 64,789 students participating throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and southern Michigan. That’s an increase of nearly 10,000 students from a year ago.

“The TinCaps Reading Program presented by Longe Optical is one of the top literacy programs in the country,” TinCaps President Mike Nutter said. “As the son of a teacher, I’ve seen the impact that reading and literacy can have on a child. The teachers in our region are as good as anywhere in the country and we love having them partner with us on this tremendous program. It’s completely free for the schools thanks to our partners at Longe Optical.”

The TinCaps Reading Program is a community initiative which encourages students to read by setting individual goals for number of books, number of pages, hours spent reading, etc. Each student “rounds the bases,” hitting benchmarks until the final goal is reached, and with that milestone comes a free ticket to a TinCaps game, a hot dog, and a bottle of water. Participating schools also can receive a visit from the TinCaps’ mascot, Johnny.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps are proud to partner with the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc. to welcome military personnel to Parkview Field for Military Appreciation Night on Tuesday, May 26, when the TinCaps host the Great Lakes Loons in a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m.

Through the generosity of the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc., the TinCaps, and caring individual donors, complimentary tickets are currently available for military families, both active and veteran, to enjoy that night’s games.

“We are proud to partner with the OmniSource Corporation and Steel Dynamics Inc. to provide military families the chance to be our guest on Military Appreciation Night,” said TinCaps President, Mike Nutter. “This is the seventh consecutive year we’ve welcomed military to Parkview Field in this way and it’s even more meaningful given the recent return of the 122nd Fighter Wing from their six month deployment. Our hope is that they can enjoy a TinCaps game with their family as our guests.”

That day, the jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds being donated to Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.

PEANUT ALLERGY AWARENESS NIGHT AT VICTORY FIELD, APRIL 29

April 27, 2015 – On the short list of foods fans most-commonly associate with the game of baseball is probably peanuts. After all, they are referenced in the beloved song,“Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

But this popular snack fare that Americans consume on average over 1.5 billion pounds of each year in the form of peanut butter and peanut products is also what forces a growing number of families from attending and enjoying a visit to an Indianapolis Indians game. According to Food Allergy & Research Education the number of children in the U.S. with peanut allergy more than tripled between 1997 and 2008.

In an effort to draw awareness to this medical condition, on April 29, 2015 the Tribe will partner with Indy PoCHA (Parents of Children Having Allergies) for Peanut Allergy Awareness Night.

With representatives from Indy PoCHA on site in Victory Field’s PNC Plaza, this inaugural night at the ballpark is intended to help educate fans and draw awareness to Food Allergy Awareness Week 2015 (May 10-16).

“This is a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on food allergies,” said Lauren Kossack with PoCHA. “There are many easy ways you can get involved in raising awareness, educating others and inspiring action. We’re grateful for the opportunity to do just that at Victory Field.”

On this night when the Indianapolis Indians host the Louisville Bats at 7:05 p.m., Victory Field will suspend for one night the sale of all products with ties to peanuts – peanuts, CRACKER JACK®, peanut M&Ms, and peanut-related ice cream toppings – and will make every reasonable effort to thoroughly clean the stadium, but cannot guarantee complete absence of peanut particles or residue. Peanut products will also be disallowed in The Lawn area on April 29.

Peanut Allergy Awareness Night does not mean the ballpark will be completely peanut-free. Fans with peanut allergies should exercise their normal precautions.

Other facts you may or may not know about peanuts and peanut allergy:

  • Peanuts are not nuts. They are legumes – a type of plant with seeds that grow inside pods such as peas or beans.
  • Peanuts grow underground, not on trees like nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.). Peanut seeds flower above ground and then migrate underground to reach maturity.
  • It takes an average of 540 peanuts to make one 12-ounce jar of peanut butter.
  • 30,000 peanut butter sandwiches can be made from one acre of grown peanuts.
  • More than 3 million Americans report having an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts or both. That’s roughly 3x the population of Indianapolis.

Fort-Wayne-TinCaps-LogoKyle Lloyd had plenty to be proud of Wednesday, and his pitching performance was only a small part of that.

The right-handed Padres prospect visited the pediatric wing of Fort Wayne’s Parkview Hospital before his start, and then raised $1,500 for Stand Up to Cancer on the mound.

Stand-Up-to-Cancer“My start is what it is, but if I’m able to brighten up a kid’s day or maybe make their week, that goes a lot further than six innings,” Lloyd said.

The 23-year-old threw six innings of one-hit ball, striking out six and walking one in Class A Fort Wayne’s 10-0 thrashing of visiting Great Lakes on Wednesday. It was Stand Up to Cancer Night at Parkview Field, and Fifth Third Bank donated $250 to that organization for each punchout.

“I actually didn’t know that until after the first, when I heard an announcement,” Lloyd said. “I’m not going to say I was trying to strike people out, but when I got a couple strikes on somebody, I did think of that, and I wanted to put him away that much more.”

The University of Evansville product is 6-4 with a 3.58 ERA, and with roommate Justin Livengood co-leads the TinCaps in community appearances with about a dozen. He has struck out 14 and issued just one walk over his last 11 innings spanning two starts.

“It’s always good not walking guys and being able put guys away. I was getting ahead in a lot of counts. That’s something we talk about a lot with the pitching coach [Burt Hooton], and I’m glad I’ve been able to do that.”

The lone hit Lloyd allowed was Devan Ahart’s two-out bunt single in the first inning. He struck out Joey Curletta to end that frame.

“There couldn’t have been a better bunt than what [Ahart] laid down,” Lloyd said. “Getting the strikeout was nice. Then we scored three [in the bottom of the first] to cap that, and we had the momentum the rest of the game.”

Lloyd was perfect until he faced Curletta again, this time walking him on a full count with two outs in the fourth.

“As a whole, I threw more quality pitches in that at-bat than not,” he said.

No other Loons hitter reached against Lloyd. He struck out two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

“I definitely felt pretty locked in,” he said. “I threw first-strike pitches on the majority of the batters and put myself in a good position. That kind of puts hitters’ backs against the wall, which is what all pitchers want to do, and I was able to do that.”

Lloyd exited the game not because of pitch count, but because the TinCaps put up five runs — including two on Fernandez Perez’s second homer of the game — in a prolonged bottom of the sixth.

“We got a few guys on and there was a pitching change, and I was sitting longer and longer,” said Lloyd. “We had [Eric Yardley] warming up during the inning, and he was loose by the time it ended, so they just went with him.”

Yardley worked around Paul Hoenecke’s single in the seventh, and Tyler Wood tossed two perfect frames to close out the shutout.

Perez finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

TinCaps, Parkview Health to Host Men’s Health Event

Fifth Third Bank To Give Fans Tickets In Support Of Healthy Living And Cancer Awareness

Fort-Wayne-TinCaps-LogoThe TinCaps, Parkview Health, and Fifth Third Bank are teaming together to help keep men healthy. During Fort Wayne’s game on Wednesday, August 20, as well as during the day on Thursday, August 21, Parkview Field is set to host a free “Keeping Men Healthy” event. All men who receive a PSA Blood Screening will receive two free tickets to a future TinCaps game, compliments of Fifth Third Bank in support of healthy living and cancer awareness.

The event will be held in Parkview Field’s Lincoln Financial Event Center during Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Great Lakes Loons (L.A. Dodgers affiliate).

For fans who can’t make Wednesday’s game, “Keeping Men Healthy” also will take place on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Services offered at the event by Parkview include:

  • PSA Testing
  • Blood Pressure Reading
  • Glucose Check
  • Height, weight, and BMI
  • Skin Screenings

There will be other screenings and prevention information as well. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet physicians from Parkview Physicians Group – Urology and Parkview Physicians Group – Colon & Rectal Surgery.

Silver Hawks Recognize Local Heroes

South-Bend-Silver-Hawks-2014Sunday, August 17th is Fallen Heroes Day at Four Winds Field presented by Midland Engineering. Each year your Silver Hawks pay tribute to police, fire and EMS workers for their extraordinary community service. Tickets to Sunday’s game are buy one get one free for police, fire and EMS workers. Must present an ID or badge at the Four Winds Field Box Office to purchase tickets.

In addition to recognizing all local responders, one Silver Hawks’ player will also be honored with the Corporal Paul Deguch Community Service Award for the 14th year. The award is named after Paul Deguch, a former South Bend police officer, killed in the line of duty in 1997. The Silver Hawks’ player who demonstrated outstanding community service throughout the course of the season will be presented with the award during pre-game activities on Sunday.

The South Bend Silver Hawks are a Class A minor league team affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The team is owned and operated by Swing-Batter-Swing, LLC whose sole shareholder is Andrew T. Berlin of Chicago, IL.

Silver Hawks to Collect 3,000 lbs. of Food for St. Vincent de Paul

South-Bend-Silver-Hawks-2014August 15th the annual Faith and Family Night returns to Four Winds Field. St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with your South Bend Silver Hawks to host the annual event. Through this partnership, your Silver Hawks and St. Vincent de Paul hope to bring the community together for a night of faith and fellowship.

St-Vincent-de-PaulArrive early for a pregame concert featuring Cody Collier. The performance will begin at 6:30 p.m. Also taking place is a canned food drive to help stock the pantries of St. Vincent de Paul. Bring non-perishable food items, or a $5 donation, to the game that evening and receive two (2) complimentary tickets for August 18th, 19th or 20th. Guests who bring the most donations in weight will have a chance to win an outdoor suite to use during a game in the 2015 Silver Hawks season.   The goal is to collect 3,000 lbs. of food during the food drive.

“The Silver Hawks are once again excited to be partnering with St. Vincent de Paul this year on our Faith and Family Night.   We have built a great partnership over the last couple of seasons but what excites me the most is the canned food drive and the opportunity we have to help those around Michiana that are in need.   We have set a goal to collect at least 3,000 lbs. of food on Friday night and it is my hope that we shatter that mark.   We live in one of the greatest communities with some of the most generous baseball fans that I have ever met.   So I am asking everyone to please bring at least one item on Friday night to donate and let’s help fill St. Vincent de Paul’s food pantry.”   states Joe Hart, Silver Hawks’ Team President.

Stand Up To Cancer Night presented by Fifth Third Bank

Fort-Wayne-TinCaps-LogoThe TinCaps welcome all fans to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research during their game at Parkview Field on Wednesday, August 20 at 7:05 p.m. against Great Lakes for Stand Up To Cancer Night, presented by Fifth Third Bank. Since partnering with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) a little more than a year ago, Fifth Third Bank has donated nearly $2.3 million to help fund breakthrough cancer research and aims to help raise more money to fight cancer with the TinCaps.

Stand-Up-to-CancerFans who attend that night can get in on the action as well. Fans will be able to take a photo of themselves with a SU2C check. Sharing that photo on social media with the hashtag of #paytotheorderof will result in $1 being donated to SU2C by Fifth Third Bank. Fans can also recognize loved ones by writing down the names of those affected by cancer on a large board that will be located on Parkview Field’s concourse.

“Stand Up To Cancer Night will be a very special night where we will be able to have a direct impact as an organization to do as much as we can to support cancer awareness and help fund cancer research,” said Michael Limmer, TinCaps Vice President of Marketing. “As a community we will be able to contribute to striking out cancer.”

On Stand Up to Cancer Night, the TinCaps will be wearing special jerseys designed by Cory Dold, a TinCaps fan who won the Fifth Third Bank Design-A-Jersey Contest.

Dold’s design was inspired by his mother Kandy, who won her battle against breast cancer three years ago. The jerseys will be auctioned off during the game with donations to provide cancer awareness and support research.

Meanwhile, also during the game on Stand Up To Cancer Night, there will be a moment for everyone in the crowd and on the field to literally and symbolically stand up to cancer to show solidarity for all those who have been impacted by the disease.

“Fifth Third Bank is very proud of the great relationship we’ve formed with Stand Up To Cancer,” said Steven Alonso, regional president and CEO for the Greater Indiana Region. “Our Bank has always been focused on creating the greatest impact we can on the communities we serve. We are thrilled to be able to partner with the Fort Wayne TinCaps for Stand Up To Cancer Night at Parkview Field to celebrate our continued efforts to fund cancer research and encourage support for this tremendous cause.”

Prior to first pitch on the 20th, representatives from Fifth Third Bank will be recognized for the organization’s commitment to funding breakthrough cancer research for Stand Up To Cancer. For every strikeout a TinCaps pitcher records on that night, Fifth Third Bank will donate $250 to SU2C.

Fifth Third Bank will also be on hand for fans to sign up for new checking accounts. For every new checking account registration, Fifth Third Bank will provide new account holders $150 cash back as well as make a $150 donation in their name to SU2C (with direct deposit and three online bill pays).

Additionally on Stand Up To Cancer Night, Parkview Health will be providing free Skin Cancer Screenings for both men and women. There will also be a men’s health event in the Lincoln Financial Events Center that includes PSA Prostate Cancer Blood Screenings.

Fort Wayne Military Members Celebrated at The Principal® Financial Dreams Tour

Come to Parkview Field July 14 for a Night to Remember

Fort-Wayne-TinCaps-LogoThe Principal Financial Group® and the TinCaps will honor members of the military and the outstanding contributions they make to our country and communities during the 2014 Principal® Financial Dreams Tour on July 14 when Fort Wayne hosts South Bend at 7:05 p.m. The Tour will make 18 stops from coast-to-coast and will provide attendees with information to help them plan for a brighter financial future for themselves and their families.

The July 14 game will feature postgame fireworks presented by The Principal and is a U.S. Foods Family Feast night. TinCaps fans also will have the opportunity to meet major league legend Bill Buckner for an autograph and photo at the Principal Dreams Tour autograph table. Buckner spent 22 years in the Majors from 1969 through 1990, accumulating nearly 3,000 hits. He played for six teams during his career, including the Cubs, with whom he won the 1980 National League batting title.

Since 2004, The Principal® has brought more than 450 events to minor league ballparks, attracting nearly two million fans. Past tours have given fans the chance to meet some of baseball’s biggest stars, including Steve Garvey, Dave Stewart, Tommy John, Rollie Fingers and Lee Smith, among others.

Wounded-Warrior-ProjectAdditionally, at the Dreams Tour event, The Principal will make a $1,000 contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project veteran’s charity supporting veterans employment programs.
