Bees Participate in “We Care We Share” Thanksgiving Dinner

The Salt Lake Bees staff participated in the 16th annual “We Care – We Share” Thanksgiving Dinner for local homeless and low-income residents at EnergySolutions Arena on Tuesday. Along with representatives from Salt Lake City Mission, Utah Food Services, All-Star Catering, Hill Air Force Base and Miller Sports Properties the Bees staff helped dish out over 3,800 meals for local residents in need.

The gathering also featured a winter clothing distribution, musical entertainment from the Salt Lake City Mission and activity packets for children.

“The holidays are a time for fellowship and cheer, and our family has been blessed to be able to provide a festive gathering and hot meals for the last 16 years to Salt Lake residents who are experiencing hardships,” said Gail Miller, owner, Larry H. Miller Group of Companies.

El Paso Fire Department and the Chihuahuas Team Up for Toy Drive

The El Paso Fire Department and the El Paso Chihuahuas have teamed together to make the holiday season brighter for children as they proudly present “Paws for Presents”, a toy drive benefiting the Child Crisis Center.

The drive continues through Saturday, Dec. 13. The Chihuahuas and EPFD request all gifts be new and not gift wrapped for children up to the age of 13. The team will categorize and deliver to the Child Crisis Center.

“Being the recipient of these donated gifts allows us to provide Christmas for children that are most needy,” said Al Velarde, Executive Director of the Child Crisis Center. “Last year, our center was able to provide 740 gifts to children in the El Paso Community. Not only did we provide for the children and families we served, we were able to work with other non-profit organizations who had identified families that needed assistance during the holidays.”

The Child Crisis Center of El Paso protects children from abuse and neglect by providing shelter, advocacy, and family support services.

Donations can be dropped off at the 35 El Paso neighborhood fire stations or the Chihuahuas Team Shop located at 1 Ballpark Plaza on Durango St. The Team Shop is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays.

“We hope our great community will join the El Paso Fire Department and the Chihuahuas in bringing gifts and joy to the local children this holiday season. Please participate,” said Chihuahuas general manager, Brad Taylor.

“The El Paso Fire Department and its membership are excited to partner up with the Chihuahuas for this worthwhile cause,” said Lieutenant James Schaerfl. “We hope the toy drive helps the Child Crisis Center bring joy to the lives of the children it serves during this Holiday Season. I’m positive that the community will give from their hearts and this event will be a great success.

Isotopes Donate $3,996.14 to S.A.F.E. House

“Dodger Blue” Jerseys Benefit Domestic Violence Shelter

The Albuquerque Isotopes presented a check in the amount of $3,996.14 to S.A.F.E. House Domestic Violence Shelter on Tuesday, November 18th with funds raised from the “Dodger Blue” weekend jersey auction.

This money is invaluable to us,” said Michele Fuller, Executive Director of S.A.F.E. House Domestic Violence Shelter. “We will use it help residents register for day care, buy gas so a survivor can continue to get to work, or pay for a child’s birthday cake. Many, many thanks to the Isotopes organization and to all of their fans for making this possible.”

In recognition of October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” the Isotopes held an online auction from October 17-24 for their “Dodger Blue” jerseys, many of which were game-worn. Bids were received nationwide with Alex Guerrero garnering the highest overall bid at nearly $220. Although most of the bids were from New Mexico, winning bids were also received from Arizona, California, Georgia, Maryland, Utah and Wisconsin.

Traditionally donned by Albuquerque during weekend home games, the jersey featured “Isotopes” script lettering across the front with the Topes’ “A” logo on the right sleeve and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ “LA” logo on the left sleeve.

“S.A.F.E. House does great work in our community, and we hope that this donation will help fulfill their mission,” said John Traub, General Manager of the Albuquerque Isotopes. “Michele and her staff do a tremendous job to help heal wounds of families and raise awareness for domestic violence in Albuquerque.”

Spotlight: Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Hy-Vee Shadow Lake – Nov. 21

The Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will serve as bell ringers for donations to the Salvation Army in front of Hy-Vee Shadow Lake on Friday, November 21^st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is the 4^th consecutive year the Storm Chasers staff has served as bell ringers. Mascot Stormy will be participating from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Staff Volunteering for November

Drumsticks on Wheels – On Saturday, November 22 starting at 9:30 a.m., members of the Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will volunteer their time to deliver the fixings of a proper Thanksgiving dinner to those in need in the Omaha Metro throughout the day. This is the fourth consecutive year the Chasers have participated in this cause.

Security Service Field will serve as drop off for “Turkey Team” Community Turkey Drive

For the second year in a row, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox have partnered with Care and Share Food Bank, Springs Rescue Mission and Catholic Charities of Central Colorado’s Marian House as part of their region-wide community turkey drive for the 2014 holiday season.

“The Sky Sox are proud to partner with this incredible group of Colorado Springs community partners in an effort to make a significant impact this holiday season,” said Sky Sox President and General Manager Tony Ensor. “We are truly thankful to be a part of this community and this effort to help those most in need. We hope that the citizens of Colorado Springs will come out in large numbers to support this worthy cause and drop off their contributions as Security Service Field.”

Those interested in donating a frozen turkey can do so at Security Service Field on Friday, November 14 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Sky Sox will also be providing one free ticket to Opening Night 2015 (Thursday, April 9) to anyone who donates a turkey at Security Service Field on November 14. Additional drop off locations include Springs Rescue Mission, Calvary Worship Center or Compassion International.

“It is only through collaborative community efforts can we accomplish a goal of feeding our neighbors in need,” said Lynne Telford, CEO Care and Share Food Bank. “By combining our efforts to meet the needs we hope to provide more turkeys, the Thanksgiving centerpiece, this holiday season.”

VETERANS HONORED WITH SPECIAL TICKET PACKAGE

In honor of Veterans Day, the Sacramento River Cats are offering a special Veterans Day Ticket Package available only on Monday, November 10 and Tuesday, November 11 at Raley Field.

The package will include five military-themed River Cats games during the 2015 season including: Salute to Armed Forces (May 9), a Memorial Day matinee (May 25), Independence Eve Celebration (July 3), a doubleheader with the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Game (July 11), and a Labor Day matinee (September 7).

Drop off Toys For Tots at Zephyr Field

Zephyr Field an official holiday drop-off location for new toys

This holiday season, the New Orleans Zephyrs are again partnering with Toys For Tots, with Zephyr Field providing an official drop-off location for toys to be given to needy children in the community.

As sponsors of the Toys For Tots program, new, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Zephyr Field through Friday, December 12. Those toys will be delivered to less fortunate children in the community as Christmas presents.

The Toys For Tots program accepts only new, unwrapped toys.

Toys For Tots campaigns are conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in approximately 500 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Isotopes Support Operation Christmas Child

Toy Drive at Isotopes Park Pro Shop This Saturday

Albuquerque Isotopes fans are invited to join Orbit this Saturday at the Isotopes Park Pro Shop from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. as the Isotopes will be hosting an Operation Christmas Child toy drive, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind that uses gift-filled shoeboxes to share God’s love in a tangible way with needy children around the world.

Fans are encouraged to bring either a packed shoebox or “shoebox sized” toy (such as a stuffed animal) for donation to Operation Christmas Child. Gifts can include toys, school supplies, non-liquid hygiene items, accessories and a personal note. A $7 donation is needed to help cover the shipping cost for each box. Additional details on how to pack your shoebox can be found at samaritanspurse.org.

“This is a great organization and a great event that is able to provide a little bit of Christmas to children around the world,” said John Traub, General Manager of the Isotopes. “We are thrilled to be able to open our Pro Shop for a great cause like this and invite our fans to contribute.”

Orbit will be on hand to welcome guests and select prizes will be given away throughout the day. The Isotopes Pro Shop will open exclusively for this event from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has collected and delivered more than 113 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in over 150 countries through Operation Christmas Child. In 2014, Samaritan’s Purse hopes to collect enough shoebox gifts to reach another 10 million children through the Operation Christmas Child project. Shoebox gifts are collected in the United States, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In recognition of “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” the Albuquerque Isotopes will be auctioning off authentic “Dodger Blue” weekend jerseys with net proceeds benefiting S.A.F.E. House Domestic Violence Shelter. More than 40 game-worn jerseys featuring player nameplates will be auctioned off exclusively online, and an additional 26 authentic jerseys without nameplates will be auctioned.

“With October being domestic violence awareness month, we saw this as a great opportunity to provide a unique, game-used item to our fans and give something back to the community,” said John Traub, General Manager of the Isotopes. “S.A.F.E. House does great work in our community, and we are honored to be able to donate funds to help them fulfill their mission.”

Martie Cordaro Named Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year at Awards Ceremony

At the Sarpy County Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet at Embassy Suites in La Vista Thursday evening, Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro was named the 2014 Business Leader of the Year.

It was the first such honor for Cordaro, who was unable to be in attendance to personally accept the award with the Pacific Coast League Fall Meetings taking place in Chicago this week. It is the second time in six years an Omaha Royals/Storm Chasers Executive has been named the Business Leader of the Year, as former team President Alan Stein was honored in 2009.

“I am truly humbled and this award shows all the hard work by our staff in the four short years at Werner Park right here in beautiful Sarpy County,” said Cordaro in his taped message played at the ceremony. “Congratulations to all the nominees in this crowded field. I am speechless, which doesn’t happen very often. Let’s go out and continue to make Sarpy County the place to live in all of Nebraska.”

The Business Leader of the Year nomination field also included Russ Daub, Margaret White, Dan Zongkers and Tom Greco.

CHASERS IN THE COMMUNITY – 2014 Season Highlights

Largest total donation number since becoming the Storm Chasers with $558,733 in the past year

Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann visiting the VA Hospital during the 2014 season was one of the many highlights from a record-setting season for the Storm Chasers in terms of community involvement.

The Omaha Storm Chasers finished the 2014 season in spectacular fashion, winning the Triple-A National Championship in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history, but it was also a record-setting year for the Chasers community involvement. The charitable arm of the team, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, donated $558,733 to local charities in the past year for the largest total since becoming the Storm Chasers.

“The first four years at Werner Park have been nothing but historic on the field, but what the Storm Chasers staff takes the most pride in is the impact we have in the community we call home,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “To set total donation records in back-to-back years is as great of a victory as back-to-back National Championships in my eyes.”

At Werner Park, the Storm Chasers showcased 78 non-profit groups throughout the 2014 season with the Live Wise Coalition Community Organization of the Night to provide the outlet for many worthwhile causes in the Omaha Metro. This included Game Worn Jersey Auctions, which raised $14,640 for three local charities, and a highlight of Werner Park involvement with fans and staff donating more than $3,000 and 630 items to Pilger Tornado Relief over two games in late June.

Staples of Omaha Storm Chasers Baseball, “Hy-Vee Canned Food Sunday” and the “McDonald’s and Huber Automotive Hurl the Pearl” contest, had strong 2014 campaigns. The Heartland Hope Mission received 5,327 canned food donations ($37,289), the most since the move to Werner Park, while “Hurl the Pearl” accumulated $15,311 for the Ronald McDonald House marking a third straight year the team has raised more than $15,000 for the promotion.

The Storm Chasers players and mascots donated their time to the community with numerous player appearances at places such as Children’s/VA Hospitals. Stormy, Casey, Vortex and the three new mascots Kernel Cobb, Cappy and Sizzle made 335 mascot appearances throughout the year which was up by more than 100 appearances compared to the 2013 season.

The front office staff donated 870 hours throughout the year, including the Storm Chasers helping struggling families during last holiday season in “Drumstick On Wheels” and Chasers FUNdamentals teaching baseball to underprivileged youth this past summer. Last month, Martie Cordaro and the Storm Chasers were named the “Community Partner of the Year” by Community 360.

ColoradoSpringsSkySox_2014-03-12 — Jon Eddy, the director of marketing and promotions for Sky Sox baseball, emcees the 2nd Annual Achieve with us. Colorado Film Festival. The event was hosted by The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region and The Arc of Colorado to help raise awareness of intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

In honor of National Developmental Disability Awareness Month, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox continued their support of local charitable organizations last week.

At the Stargazers Theatre, Sky Sox Director of Marketing and Promotions Jon Eddy emceed the 2nd Annual Achieve with us. Colorado Film Festival hosted by The Arc of Pikes Peak Region and The Arc of Colorado. The festival featured 15 short films written by, starring or produced by people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities from the state of Colorado, as well as the entire United States.

Eddy, who has emceed the event both years, has a personal connection to supporting people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and is extremely supportive of the cause.

“My sister has a disability on the Autism spectrum, Aspergers (syndrome), so this is something I really care about,” Eddy said. “This whole film fest is geared around showing these people can be, and are, astounding in some ways that you and I aren’t. It’s overwhelming.”

Eddy’s sister is currently a teacher of young children in a suburb of New York and found a way to make her disadvantage an advantage by being able to connect so well with children of younger ages.

“The idea (of the festival) is to help educate the community about intellectual and developmental disabilities and to celebrate their achievements,” said Christina Butero, guardianship director of The ARC of Pikes Peak Region. “Our partnership with Sky Sox stems from the ARC Thrift (Stores) and Jon just became a champion of what we’ve been doing because of his sister, and he knows how difficult it is to be accepted in our society.”

Butero said ARC tries to partner with lots of different organizations to help try and build awareness and help create jobs for people with disabilities.

During the festival, Eddy enjoyed all the films, but particularly enjoyed “Pretty Girls” and “Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham – The Story”.

“Pretty Girls” is a short film by 14-year-old Jack Williams and is shot like all his films – with his phone. Jack was functionally nonverbal until he was nine years old when he started shooting videos which have helped him capture the world from his point of view. His films have gone on to win numerous of local and national awards.

“Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham – The Story” is about Aaron Fotheringham, a wheelchair motocross athlete from Las Vegas. He was born with Spina Bifida and has no usage of his legs. Spina Bifida is a birth defect of the spinal cord. Fotheringham has been doing extreme tricks the past several years and has traveled with the Nitro Circus led by world-famous motorsports performer Travis Pastrana.

Included in the festival is a movement that has made national news in the past few years, which is to stop saying the R-word – ‘retard(ed).’ Since the word is offensive and derogatory to people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, the festival gave attendees an opportunity to pledge against the word.

Jack and Aaron are just two of many examples of people with disabilities succeeding despite their “disadvantages,” and continue to inspire people all over the country and world.

“It was an emotional night for all involved,” Eddy said. “I’m overwhelmed by the work that The Arc is doing in Colorado, and proud of the continued partnership between The Arc and The Sky Sox.”

Star Wars Night and the Chewbacca jersey auction benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Middle TN and Nashville RBI will resume on Saturday, August 23.

Bees Visit Shriners Hospitals for Children

The Salt Lake Bees visited Shriners Hospitals for Children earlier today to take part in the hospital’s Summer Fest. Brennan Boesch, Tony Campana, Vance Albitz, Shawn O’Malley, Caleb Clay and Bumble all took part in the event and helped run games, played whiffle ball, danced with the children, took pictures and signed autographs.

Patients currently staying in the hospital as well as out-patients and their families were invited to attend and were able to enjoy carnival games, face painting, food, a rock climbing wall and a live DJ. The Bees group also took part in the activities themselves as everyone gave the games a try and Albitz and O’Malley sported super hero face paint.

“I almost forgot the event was for the kids. I was having so much fun!” said Albitz.

Campana has special ties to the event as he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma when he was seven years old. After recieving treatment for ten years Campana was declared cancer free. He tries to visit hospitals whenever get the chance.

Third Annual Peanut Free Night at Werner Park

Hosted by the Omaha Storm Chasers and the Asthma and Allergy Center

On Tuesday, July 29^th, Werner Park will open its gates to fans with peanut allergies who cannot generally attend baseball games and other sporting events. For the entire week leading up to July 29^th, Werner Park will be sanitized and cleaned to rid of all peanut dust and allergens. There will be no peanuts, tree nuts, or sunflower seeds sold or present in the stadium. Children involved will have an opportunity to form a “Peanut Free Field of Dreams Team” and run on the field with the players prior to the game. Ticket packages also include first pitch opportunities, a meet and greet with an Omaha Storm Chaser player, and a pre-game parade.

VA Hospital Player Appearance – Omaha Storm Chasers staff and players will visit the VA Hospital on July 30th at 4101 Woolworth Avenue in Omaha, Nebraska.
Taste of Plattsmouth – OSC staff members and mascots will be at the Taste of Plattsmouth Business Expo on August 1^st from 5pm – 9pm located at the Entertainment Plaza on the corner of 4^th and Main Street in downtown Plattsmouth.
