Cardinals having an impact on and off the field

Palm-Beach-CardinalsThe Palm Beach Cardinals, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, have had a terrific first half to the 2014 season. The team landed five All-Star selections to the Florida State League South roster, individuals have won weekly league awards and have been promoted within the organization, and overall, the team has been winning a lot of games.

None of the individual honors or impressive team winning streaks come close to how the 2014 squad has impacted the community off the field.

Vs-Cancer-logoEarlier this month the Cardinals teamed up with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money to help the fight against childhood cancer. On Tuesday, June 17th, Roger Dean Stadium hosted the Vs. Cancer Foundation Fundraiser Night at the Ballpark. Members of the Palm Beach Cardinals lined up to get their heads shaved in front of the dugouts following the game that night against the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Palm-Beach-Childrens-HospitalPrior to the event, players on both the Cardinals and Hammerheads collected donations via fundraising pages to support the cause. Once the Cardinals learned that half of all proceeds from the fundraiser would benefit national childhood cancer research and the other half would help local children at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, the team joined together to make the event a huge success.

The whole team took to social media right away, getting hundreds and hundreds of retweets from family, friends, and fans. Former college teammates and loyal supporters in the Cardinals organization took notice and helped spread the word. News about the team’s efforts spread like wildfire and the donations started pouring in.

The team goal of $5,000 was met after just three days of fundraising and was eventually shattered by more than one thousand dollars. Members of the team, led by Charlie Tilson and Joe Cuda, created an autographed ball giveaway for select fans who donated. The team spread the news via twitter that five autographed balls would be given away at random to those who donated to the cause.

“I’m just glad I could be a part of this,” Cuda said. “I never would have thought that it would have created this much buzz. It’s crazy how the baseball community is so connected together.”

On June 17th, the Cardinals gathered in front of the home dugout following the game to cap an extremely successful fundraising campaign by shaving select team members heads. Players who participated in the head shaving event were, Cuda, Tilson, Iden Nazario, Bruce Caldwell, Alex Mejia, Jesus Montero, Nick Martini and Jimmy Bosco. Even head trainer Keith Joynt stepped into the dugout barber shop to support the cause.

For the Cardinals, this wasn’t a one-time ordeal. Players have been giving back to the community all season long.

In early May, members of the team signed up to visit Palm Beach Children’s Hospital to spend time with children for a few hours before a home game. While just a few guys were asked to ride along for the visit, multiple players asked if they could go as well for fun.

While the fact that the Palm Beach Cardinals ranked in the top five in numerous batting and pitching categories among Florida State League teams in the first half of the season is impressive, the character of the guys in the Cardinals clubhouse is something to be commended.

The 25 players in the Cardinals locker room are truly making a difference in the Palm Beach community.

Fort-Wayne-TinCaps-LogoThe Principal Financial Group® and the TinCaps will honor members of the military and the outstanding contributions they make to our country and communities during the 2014 Principal® Financial Dreams Tour on July 14 when Fort Wayne hosts South Bend at 7:05 p.m. The Tour will make 18 stops from coast-to-coast and will provide attendees with information to help them plan for a brighter financial future for themselves and their families.

The July 14 game will feature postgame fireworks presented by The Principal and is a U.S. Foods Family Feast night. TinCaps fans also will have the opportunity to meet major league legend Bill Buckner for an autograph and photo at the Principal Dreams Tour autograph table. Buckner spent 22 years in the Majors from 1969 through 1990, accumulating nearly 3,000 hits. He played for six teams during his career, including the Cubs, with whom he won the 1980 National League batting title.

Since 2004, The Principal® has brought more than 450 events to minor league ballparks, attracting nearly two million fans. Past tours have given fans the chance to meet some of baseball’s biggest stars, including Steve Garvey, Dave Stewart, Tommy John, Rollie Fingers and Lee Smith, among others.

Wounded-Warrior-ProjectAdditionally, at the Dreams Tour event, The Principal will make a $1,000 contribution to the Wounded Warrior Project veteran’s charity supporting veterans employment programs.

The Drive’s first playcation package of the 2014 season produced a sold out event on June 4th, including a Drive game attendance record of 7,176 fans. As a result of this early success, the Drive have been working with its Playcation partners to set another date for 2014.

Storm Chasers to Accept Donations for Pilger Relief Tonight, Tomorrow

Fans can bring various suggested items or make cash/check donations

Omaha-Storm-Chasers-2014A week ago today the community and residents of Pilger, Nebraska were devastated by twin tornadoes, leaving many survivors without their homes and belongings. In a show of support for their fellow Nebraskan community, the Storm Chasers will ask fans attending tonight and tomorrow’s games to donate various items to be sent to the city that lies just over an hour and a half from Omaha.

Items that the Storm Chasers suggest to be donated by fans are totes, gloves, personal hygiene items, first aid supplies and non-perishable foods. No clothing is needed at this time.

Home-Run-Foundation-of-Omaha-logoThe Storm Chasers will also accept cash donations at Werner Park through 2 p.m. Tuesday, as well as check donations that will go directly to aid the Pilger community. Checks should be made out to the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha. All donations, both monetary and physical, can be made outside of Werner Park near the Ticket Office.

As the relief effort continues and grows, the Storm Chasers will be participating and will alert fans to other ways they can get involved as well. Fans can follow the team and their community relations information on Facebook and Twitter to get updates.

HOPE Week is a New York Yankees initiative designed to reach out to remarkable people who are worthy of recognition for their inspiring actions and support of their communities.

The Tampa Yankees players and staff will be visiting patients and their families at local area hospitals including:

  • St. Joseph’s Hospital
  • All Children’s Hospital

HOPE-WeekThe Tampa based minor league Yankees players will also be visiting the Children’s Home: a child-and family-centered organization that is positioned to care for struggling families and children seeking the comfort of a loving family.

Fisher Cats, Citizens Bank ‘Taking the Show’ to Manchester South

Through a partnership with Citizens Bank, the Fisher Cats will bring their entertainment experience to the fields of Manchester South on Saturday, June 21. Three other leagues – Londonderry Athletic and Field Association (LAFA), Concord Little League, and Hollis/Brookline Cal Ripken – have been awarded consolation prizes based upon the sportsmanship qualities represented by their leagues.

“We received a number of outstanding entries, detailing how the leagues in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts are not only developing outstanding athletes, but outstanding young people through their programs,” said Fisher Cats President Rick Brenner. “These tales of sportsmanship and integrity highlight the best of youth sports. We are excited to bring our show to Manchester South for a great day of baseball and family fun later this month.”

Iowa-CubsKids will have an opportunity to play with their big-league heroes at the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Legends for Youth baseball clinic series on Wednesday, June 18, at Principal Park. The free clinic features former major-league baseball players who will teach baseball skills, drills and life lessons for kids ages 6-16.

Players scheduled to attened include Don Wengert, Dwight Siebler, Don Eddy, Curt Kaufman and Matt Wagner.

The clinic will take place at Principal Park from 9-11 a.m. Players will train at stations including pitching, catching, base running and life skills. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The morning will conclude with an autograph session for children in attendance.

Dragons to Honor Community All-Stars Tuesday

Dayton-DragonsVectren Corporation and the Dayton Dragons will host Scott Hannah and Tyler Gregory during the unique “Community All-Stars” program on Tuesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. when the Dayton Dragons take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.

The Dayton community is a great place to live, work and play. But what makes Dayton truly great are the people that call Dayton home. We have great people and great organizations in our community that do incredible things each and every day. Throughout the season, the Dragons and Vectren will honor 35 “All-Stars”-anyone from firefighters to first responders, non-profit organizations to Good Samaritans-and their families with a VIP treatment at a Dragons game in recognition of their service.

Scott and Tyler’s Story

Scott Hannah and Tyler Gregory were unlikely friends. Rivals on their high school cross country team, the two often competed against each other. When their coaches suggested they start running together, Scott and Tyler became fast friends and discovered they had more than just running in common. The teens shared a desire to make a change.

Bullying had become commonplace amongst the students at the school Scott and Tyler attended. While it was something many talked about, no one seemed to be doing anything about it. Scott and Tyler decided to take a stand. The two made an anti-bullying video that included over 70 students at their school. The video was submitted to “The Great American NO BULL Challenge” and was a top 15 finalist.

“When we put the video together, we tried to think about everyone from those being bullied to those doing the bullying and even those that were bystanders and how we could speak to each one,” Scott explains. “After showing the video at our school, students started apologizing to those they had bullied in the past. Bullying became the weird thing to do.”

Scott and Tyler started speaking to schools around the Dayton area about their experiences being bullied and they themselves being the bully which propelled them to team up with “The NO BULL Challenge” as national spokespeople.

“We’ve been to over 25 states and have spoken to over 35,000 students,” Tyler said. “Most students we talk to can say they have been bullied. What is really unique is when students admit they themselves have been a bully. We want to reach everyone and truly change the atmosphere of the schools we visit.”

For taking a stand and making an impact on schools around the nation, Scott and Tyler have been selected as Dragons Community All-Stars. The Dragons Community All-Stars Program honors individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond to improve the quality of life in the Miami Valley.

M-Braves to host Walk to Defeat ALS

Mississippi-BravesIn conjunction with The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter, the Mississippi Braves baseball team is proud to announce its commitment as presenting sponsor of the 2014 Jackson Walk to Defeat ALS. Trustmark Park will host the annual event Saturday, September 27.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, progressively paralyzes its victims, attacking nerve cells and pathways in the brain or spinal cord. ALS has no known cause or cure, but the community is rallying together to help change that. The ALS Association is a perfect fit for the Mississippi Braves. M-Braves General Manager Steve DeSalvo has agreed to serve as Chairman of the Walk to Defeat ALS. Trustmark Park will also host other events over the weekend to raise more money and awareness for ALS.

Walk-to-Defeat-ALS“Minor League Baseball is a major supporter of The ALS Association because of baseball’s connection to Lou Gehrig,” DeSalvo said. “This year marks the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech. We’ve gotten behind the efforts of the Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter and plan to put on a lot of various events at Trustmark Park so we can help them not only find a cure but also a treatment for this fatal disease.”

Kelly Viator, Executive Director of The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter, is excited to have the Braves on board. “We’re very grateful for the Mississippi Braves’ support of our signature event, the Walk to Defeat ALS,” Viator stated.

“This event builds awareness of ALS, raises funds to support patient services and research for treatment and a cure, and brings the community together for an important cause,” she said. “As the presenting sponsor and host for the walk, the Braves will have a significant impact on families living with ALS in the Jackson area. In addition to hosting the Walk to Defeat ALS, the Braves will host A Night with The ALS Association on Thursday, July 10 in the Farm Bureau Grill at Trustmark Park. Guests will enjoy light refreshments and learn more about the work that The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter is doing in the Jackson area and how community business leaders can become involved as corporate supporters.

I was fortunate enough to accompany a group of pALS (persons living with ALS), caregivers, Chapter staff and friends on a trip to Washington D.C. in May to tell their story to the Mississippi legislature,” DeSalvo explained. “This has had a huge impact on me, and I want to ask the Jackson-Metro Area to help ‘Strike out ALS’.

Persons with ALS (pALS) will gather with their families and friends at The Walk to Defeat ALS, hoping their steps will make a difference for ALS patients living in Jackson. Many who walk have a loved one who is still fighting the deadly disease. Others walk in memory of a loved one. Some walk out of a simple concern for those who are suffering with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

With a life expectancy of only two to five years, patients have an urgent need, and the community is stepping in to fill it by walking for those who can’t. The Walk to Defeat ALS is The ALS Association’s signature event in which all funds directly support cutting-edge research, programs and patient care.

Last year’s events in Louisiana and Mississippi raised $535,000. The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter holds six walks throughout the two states annually. The chapter aims to raise $600,000 this year to continue ALS research and to extend local patient services programs. The Mississippi Braves baseball team is the first presenting level sponsor in the history of the Jackson walk.

Fan are encouraged to nominate members of the community who encompass these traits and the selected nominees will receive four all inclusive seats in the Mr. Rooter Diamond Club. A different winner will be honored during each 2014 Scrappers home game, courtesy of Krinos Group.

Spikes, First National Bank form CCUW Home Run Club

State-College-SpikesThe State College Spikes will be providing fans a new way to show their support for the Centre County United Way in 2014 with the Home Run Club, presented by First National Bank. Fans will be able to make a pledge for each time a Spikes player hits a homer at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this summer, and the donations will benefit the Centre County United Way and its 34 partner agencies.

Spikes fans will be encouraged to join First National Bank and the Spikes in making a pledge through public address announcements and videos during each game. Pledge cards can be filled out at Spikes games throughout the season at the Collegiate Pride Customer Service Center on the main concourse behind home plate.

United-WayAt the end of the season, businesses and individuals who have made home run pledges will be invited to participate in an on-field check presentation with First National Bank, Spikes and Centre County United Way representatives. Plus, any individual who joins the Home Run Club will receive two (2) free Spikes tickets to a future game.

“Our ability to improve lives in Centre County is a direct result of the support and advocacy of the Spikes and First National Bank,” said Tammy Gentzel, Executive Director of Centre County United Way. “We are having fun with this opportunity to ‘play ball’ and to Live United with two incredible community partners. We hope Spikes fans will join in the fun and make the Home Run Club a great success.”

The Spikes’ partnership with the Centre County United Way this season also includes the seventh annual Centre County United Way Partner Agency Series. The Partner Agency Series will shine the spotlight on 15 different organizations over the course of the summer.

Dunkin’ Donuts to Host Free Baseball Clinic for Kids

Portland-Sea-DogsThe Portland Sea Dogs have partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts to host a free baseball clinic for kids 16 and under at Hadlock Field on Saturday, June 21st from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon.

Portland Sea Dogs’ players will be on hand to teach the basic fundamentals of baseball including hitting, pitching, outfielding, and infielding. Kids will also have the opportunity to get autographs from the players taking part in the clinic.

The clinic is open to children 16 years old and younger. Kids participating must be comfortable being on the field without a parent. Parents are welcome to watch the clinic from the stands. The clinic is also dependant on weather and field conditions.

The clinic is free but pre-registration is required. Parents may register their children at www.seadogs.com. Registration is open to the first 100 kids. Kids participating must be comfortable going on the field without a parent.  Register Now

Kids participating in the clinic should arrive at Hadlock Field by 9:45 AM and meet at the Slugger statue. Kids should provide their own glove. All other equipment will be provided.

The Sea Dogs will host another free baseball clinic at Hadlock Field on Saturday, July 5th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.  Register Now

MMIC’s ‘Heading For The Big Leagues’ Returns To Dow Diamond

Trade show will bring together regional innovators, business and community leaders

Great-Lakes-LoonsThe sixth annual “Heading For The Big Leagues” entrepreneur expo returns to Dow Diamond on Thursday, May 29. Sponsored by the Mid-Michigan Innovation Center, the event brings together a wide variety of groups – from regional innovators and startups, to community and business leaders.

The event kicks off at 3 p.m. with a MiQuest Coaching Session and a Buyer’s Circle Panel Discussion. There will be two sessions available for both events – from 3-4 p.m. and from 4-5 p.m. Also from 3 to 5 p.m. is an Advanced Materials Tech Forum, which is by invite only.

Mid-Michigan-Innovation-CenterThe VIP Reception and MMIC Award Presentation will be from 5 to 6 p.m., and hors d’ouevres and beverages will be available.

The Exhibitor Showcase takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on the Dow Diamond Concourse. There will be food and beverages available, along with the opportunity to browse new technology companies started in Michigan.

Standard tickets are priced at $25 each and include exhibit access and a food and drink item. VIP tickets ($100 each) include exhibit access, all educational sessions, food and beverages, and the VIP reception and networking area.

Redcay Strong Community Day Slated for June 14th

Reading-Fightin-Phils-2014Following the overwhelming support from the Muhlenberg Township community to raise funds for the Derrick Redcay Strong fund on Saturday, May 3rd’s game, the Reading Fightin Phils will be hosting Redcay Strong Community Day at FirstEnergy Stadium on Saturday, June 14th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. thanks to Savage 61, Forino, and Lowe’s.

Admission to the event is free for all ages. A $10 wristband for unlimited access to children’s activities during the afternoon will also be available at the event.

Derrick-Redcay-StrongAs part of the day’s festivities, Savage 61 will be donating a brand new 2014 Dodge Dart to be raffled off at $10/ticket. All money earned through the raffle will go to the Redcay Strong fund. Savage 61 will also be coordinating a handicap accessible van for Derrick and his family.

Lowe’s will also be donating supplies to the Redcay family in order for them make the family garage accessible for Derrick.

The event benefits the Derrick Redcay Strong fund, which has been set up to assist with the ongoing expenses related to the support and care of Derrick and his family. Local fire companies, ambulance, police department, township, and school officials have joined forces with his church Alsace Lutheran in the fundraising efforts.

On April 24, 18 year-old Muhlenberg High School senior Redcay suffered a rare stroke to his spinal cord that severed his nerves at the C4-C6 area. As a result, Redcay no longer has sensations and movement below his neck and needs assistance with breathing, which his family hopes is temporary.

Derrick is a member of the high school varsity baseball team, the Alsace Lutheran Church Youth Group, and is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, earned by maintaining a 3.5 GPA since the 9th grade. Derrick is also a volunteer firefighter with the Goodwill Fire Company, helping out at a 5-alarm blaze in the township less than 24 hours before he was stricken. Derrick has been accepted to the University of New Haven to study Fire Science.

Volunteers from the Redcay Strong fund will be on hand June 14th to sell Redcay Strong t-shirts, bracelets, and decals with the proceeds going to the fund.

The day of fun will feature live music on the Weston Center Winning Smiles Stage. In addition, businesses, organizations, and individuals will be running stands, games, and activities throughout Tompkins VIST Bank Plaza. A list of the activities can be found below:
