“Run for One” June 12 to Benefit One Fund Boston

The Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox affiliate), and emediagroup, along with the Caine Halter YMCA, Go Magazine, Set Up Events, and Fatz, have combined forces to coordinate a 2.62 mile, run/walk on June 12th to raise funds for The One Fund Boston – the official central fund to help the families affected by the tragic events that occurred at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. 100% of proceeds raised will go to The One Fund Boston, who will distribute all collected donations to these families on June 30, 2013.

J.J. Swartz, Greenville Run for One event director and endurance sports team member at emediagroup, hopes to see Greenville runners, businesses and residents pull together to show Boston that the tragic turn of events in Boston have not gone unnoticed by the Upstate. “The bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon and the suffering and loss that followed, cannot be reversed or taken away. What we in Greenville can do though is show the city of Boston that we care about them and want to help in any way we can. It’s what we would hope for if the same thing were to happen in our city.”

Runners and walkers will start at the Caine Halter YMCA at 5:00pm. The 2.62 course will wind its way through Cleveland Park from the YMCA and have its own version of Boston Marathon’s “Heartbreak Hill”. Runners and walkers will finish by entering Fluor Field, running by its own version of the iconic Green Monster, and crossing home plate while high-fiving players and coaches from the Drive.

The Greenville Drive will provide all participants with a complimentary ticket to attend that evening’s 7:05pm ballgame between the Greenville Drive & the Charleston River Dogs. The Drive will continue to honor Boston during the ballgame by wearing commemorative jerseys with “Boston” across the front in the Red Sox font, along with the “B Strong” patch on one sleeve. These jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game, with proceeds going to The One Fund Boston.

Since both emediagroup and the Greenville Drive have ties to Boston, the two had a common interest in making this event happen. “Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray and his team at DMSE have always been great to us at emediagroup,” said Bill Bishop, co-owner of emediagroup.

“The actions that occurred on April 15th were unthinkable, and rocked us all,” commented Drive Co-Owner and President, Craig Brown. “As an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, this tragedy really hit home and the event on June 12th will serve as a rallying point for the Greenville Community to support those affected.”

● 3:30pm-4:45pm – Packet pick-up and run/walk registration.
● 5:00pm – Run/walk start
● 7:05pm- Greenville Drive vs. Charleston River Dogs

Captains Charities Baseball Classic is May 3 and 11

(Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County Captains, the Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, has announced the line-up for the ninth Annual News-Herald Captains Charities High School Baseball Classic for 2013. Eight local teams will be featured in four games over two days at Classic Park. The event raises funds for Captains Charities, the non-profit charitable arm of the Lake County Captains organization, as well as the participating schools.

This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 11. On May 3, the Madison Blue Streaks will play the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Lions beginning at 4 PM, followed by the nightcap featuring the Willoughby South Rebels and the Eastlake North Rangers

On May 11, the Painesville Riverside Beavers will take on the Mayfield Wildcats at 1PM and the Painesville Harvey Red Raiders will play the Gilmour Lancers at 4PM.

Tickets for the event will be just $6 each and will be available for purchase at each of the participating schools, on the Captains web site at www.captainsbaseball.com, in person through the Captains Ticket Office during normal business hours, or by calling 440-954-WINS (9467). Daily tickets are goods for both games that day.

(April 30, 2013) – The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team is coming to Kannapolis this Memorial Day – Monday, May 27, for a special showcase against the Charlotte Firefighters Association Local 660. The featured game is at noon at CMC-NorthEast Stadium, home of the Kannapolis Intimidators, Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. This is the second straight year the Intimidators will host local firefighters for a benefit softball game to help commemorate the Memorial Day holiday. The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team along with the Charlotte Firefighters Association Local 660 and Kannapolis Fire Department will play four softball games at CMC-NorthEast Stadium starting at 10 a.m. Fans can also enjoy a Memorial Day All-You-Can-Eat picnic in the park featuring ballpark fare favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken tenders and other backyard picnic-style staples for only $10 starting at 11 a.m.

The national Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team represents some of our nation’s bravest and most determined heroes, soldiers and veterans. These young extremely athletic men have sustained severe injuries resulting in amputation while serving in the military/war, and through extensive rehabilitation, they have become competitive athletes again. Second Annual Golf Tournament set for June 5

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Grizzlies will host their second annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 5th at Copper River Country Club. The event, presented by Jani-King International Inc., will benefit the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund (GCF). This is a chance for golfers to play alongside select Grizzlies players and coaches and benefit a worthwhile cause. The field is limited to 144 golfers and there are a limited number of Fresno Grizzlies players and coaches participating, so it is recommended interested golfers register early.

The second annual Fresno Grizzlies Golf Tournament will have a 12:30 pm shotgun start, with lunch provided before the tournament begins. Registration includes a bucket of range balls, team photo, sponsored giveaway items, free beverages provided at five different holes, and a post-tournament mixer with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Golf attire is required. Check-in is at 10:30 am on the day of the tournament.

Isotopes “Batting for Boston” Raises Nearly $4,500

Albuquerque-IsotopesWhen called upon to help victims of the devastating events in Boston, Albuquerque responded emphatically, contributing nearly $4,500 as part of the “Batting for Boston” fundraiser last Saturday, April 20, at Isotopes Park. Over the course of five hours, more than 200 cars came through the drive-thru fundraiser, which was hosted by the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Contributions ranged from a few dollars to a check for $500.00, as people throughout the Duke City took time out of their busy day to donate to the great cause which raised $4,368.65. Proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to the One Fund Boston, Inc., created by the City of Boston to benefit the victims and their families most affected by the tragic events during the Boston Marathon.

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, are pleased to announce activities for the Chiefs’ Armed Forces Weekend. Events at NBT Bank Stadium will take place on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11.

On Friday, May 10, the Chiefs will host a showcase concert from Nashville recording artist Parker Bradway in the Hank Sauer Room from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The concert, sponsored by B104.7, will benefit the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. Special event tickets can be purchased for $20 each, good for admission to both the concert and the Chiefs’ 7:00 pm game that evening vs. the Norfolk Tides.

On Saturday, May 11, the Chiefs will host the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) to kick off an all-day Armed Forces celebration. At 10:30 am, the WWAST will take the field against a local celebrity team sponsored by Fuccillo Nissan. Admission to the softball game is free.

During the day on Saturday, military vehicles and equipment will be on display in the NBT Bank Stadium parking lot beginning at 12:00 noon. A pre-game, on-field ceremony will take place to honor military personnel before the the Chiefs’ 2:00 pm game against the Tides.  Chiefs players and coaches will also wear specially designed “Stars & Stripes” jerseys and hats for the game.

Golfers and have-funners will head to the links on Tuesday, May 7, at Wild Dunes Resort for an 11 am shotgun start. The event is once again presented by Parks Auto Parts and benefits the Medical University of South Carolina’s Storm Eye Institute.

The four-man Captain’s Choice format is not a typical golf outing as the Golftoberfest-themed tournament will be a celebration that even RiverDogs Director of Fun Bill Murray won’t want to miss.

“Who isn’t a fan of fun?” asked Events Director Melissa Azevedo. “This tournament not only offers a day-full of light-hearted entertainment at a beautiful golf course, it also provides an afternoon of networking while raising funds to help fight blindness.”

Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places, and in typical RiverDogs fashion, there will also be prizes given for best cart decor, best costume and best golf head cover.

The $500 per foursome entry fee includes green and cart fees, range balls, an exclusive golfer gift and goodie bag, unlimited beverages, awards ceremony and dinner courtesy of Rollin’ South.

Hole sponsorships are also available for $350.  Each hole will be named after an authentic Oktoberfest Beer Tent, and each hole will feature a German-themed contest that includes a yodeling competition, keg rolling, a German Chocolate Cake Eating Contest and pretzel-making lessons, to name a few.

RiverDogs Salute to Military Personnel All Season at The Joe

Charleston-RiverDogsThe Charleston RiverDogs will be offering military personnel $5 tickets all season at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park thanks to General Dynamics Land Systems–Force Protection. Plus, the club has planned several Military Appreciation Nights and military-themed promotions throughout the season.

Fridays will feature a sea of red at Riley Park as the popular family-friendly General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection Red Shirt Friday returns. All fans who wear red shirts to the game on Friday will save $1 off the purchase of their ticket at the box office, plus RiverDogs players and coaches will be wearing special red digi-camo jerseys. The dollar saved by fans off of their ticket can be donated to benefit the charity Carolina Canines, a local charity which works with military prisoners at the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston and teaches them how to train rescue dogs as service animals for wounded and injured veterans. Additionally, information on the Medal of Honor Museum at nearby Patriots Point will be on hand throughout the season at the Guest Relations booth.

In addition, the RiverDogs will be hosting Coast Guard Night on Thursday, May 23. This is a night to salute Coast Guard Sector Charleston. Game time is set for 7:05 pm as the RiverDogs host the rival Greenville Drive.

First Race to Home 5K raises over $5K for Bandit Scholars

More than 300 runners and walkers competed in the first-ever Bandits Race to Home 5K and Fun Run presented by Palmer Chiropractic Clinics on Saturday morning, helping raise more than $5,000 towards the Bandit Scholars Program.

All proceeds benefit the Bandit Scholars Program, which annually awards the Keith Lucier Memorial Scholarship and the Bandit Scholarship. Each scholarship pays the entire first-year college tuition for two Quad Cities-area students.

“All of the participants, volunteers, staff and spectators made the first Bandits Race to Home 5K a memorable and unique community event and a great way to kick off another fun-filled season at Modern Woodmen Park,” said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. “We want to thank the people of the Quad Cities for their outstanding participation and support of the Bandit Scholars Program, and look forward to welcoming everyone back to the ballpark for Thursday’s home opener.”

The fastest male and female finishers in each of the 10 age groups – 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60 & older – were awarded trophies courtesy of Crown Trophy, while the second and third place finishers received medals.  Additionally, the top three male and female runners were awarded with trophies.

The Bandits Race to Home 5K began on River Drive and Western Avenue in downtown Davenport, Iowa, crossed the Centennial Bridge to Rock Island, Ill., headed over to the Rock Island Arsenal, then back across the Arsenal Bridge before finishing at home plate in Modern Woodmen Park.

The Fun Run featured young contestants racing the River Bandits’ mascot Rascal from outside the left field wall of the stadium and finishing just inside the gate of Modern Woodmen Park.  Each contestant was awarded a Fun Run ribbon to commemorate his or her victory over Rascal.

Additional sponsors for the Bandits Race to Home 5K and Fun Run were Western Illinois University (Quad Cities campus), ECS, McDonald’s and Hy-Vee.

ABOUT THE BANDITS: The River Bandits will make one of the biggest improvements to Modern Woodmen Park since the ballpark was first built back in 1931! CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston RiverDogs will be offering military personnel $5 tickets all season at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park thanks to General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection. Plus, the club has planned several Military Appreciation Nights and military-themed promotions throughout the season.

Fridays will feature a sea of red at Riley Park as the popular family-friendly General Dynamics Land Systems-Force Protection Red Shirt Friday returns. All fans who wear red shirts to the game on Friday will save $1 off the purchase of their ticket at the box office, plus RiverDogs players and coaches will be wearing special red digi-camo jerseys. The dollar saved by fans off of their ticket can be donated to benefit the charity Carolina Canines, a local charity which works with military prisoners at the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston and teaches them how to train rescue dogs as service animals for wounded and injured veterans. Additionally, information on the Medal of Honor Museum at nearby Patriots Point will be on hand throughout the season at the Guest Relations booth.

In addition to the military theme on Friday nights, the RiverDogs are also hosting three different Military Appreciation Nights: Thursday April, 25, Saturday July, 13 and Wednesday, August, 21. Each Military Night allows active and retired military members FREE entry for themselves and their family members by showing a Military ID at the box office.

Also, the RiverDogs will be hosting Coast Guard Night on Thursday, May 23. This is a night to salute Coast Guard Sector Charleston. Game time is set for 7:05 pm as the RiverDogs host the rival Greenville Drive.

The RiverDogs begin the home portion of the season on April 11 – a Thirsty Thursday – as the Augusta GreenJackets come to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to open a seven-game home stand that also includes a three-game visit from the Rome Braves. Pelicans launch ‘Make a Splash’ campaign

“Make a Splash Monday” headlines wide array of community-based initiatives

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are launching their “Make a Splash” marketing campaign as part of the team’s 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand. As part of the initiative, the Pelicans hope to raise $250,000 in an effort to make Myrtle Beach a better place to live, work and play.

“The barometer for success in professional sports is determined by success at the turnstile and in how a franchise succeeds in becoming part of the fabric of their community,” General Manager Andy Milovich said. “We want to celebrate our 15th anniversary season by making new memories and changing lives for the better.

Every Monday Pelicans home game will be a “Make a Splash Monday” at TicketReturn.Com Field. “Make a Splash Monday” enables fans to “connect with your community” and it is presented all season long by HTC.

The Pelicans have adopted the “Backpack Buddies” program as the primary charitable partner of “Make a Splash Mondays.” “Backpack Buddies” provides food, books, clothing and school supplies to impoverished children so they have the tools to succeed outside of school hours.

Each “Make a Splash Monday,” fans who donate an item listed on the “Backpack Buddies” donation list will receive half-price admission along with a complimentary autographed baseball card from a Pelicans player that features him doing work in the community. “Backpack Buddies” is part of the Help 4 Kids 501c3 and has been in existence since 1989 to provide basic necessities to the children of the working poor in Horry County.

In addition to Mondays at the TicketReturn.Com Field, the “Make a Splash” campaign will feature charity ticket fundraisers, more than 10 of which are already scheduled. Additional efforts include Bruce Dal Canton fundraising, Miracle League Improvement and American Red Cross Blood Drives. Pelicans players and front office members will continue to volunteer community service time.

The Pelicans will also be honoring companies and organizations that demonstrate their commitment to the community. Those organizations that submit a “Pelican Pledge” or are nominated by another party for their efforts in the community will receive complimentary tickets to “Make a Splash Monday” and will be recognized at the ballpark. Honorees will be recognized on the video board and would have a first pitch opportunity prior to a Pelicans home game.

Tigers to Host Benefit for Local Hero & Norwich PD

Norwich, CT – A benefit honoring recently wounded Norwich Police Officer Jonathan Ley and the Norwich Police Department will take place Saturday, March 30, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. Officer Ley’s benefit will celebrate courage, bravery and valor. Monies raised will benefit Officer Ley and his everyday living costs. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Norwich Police Department to increase their supply of combat tactical gear for their officers.
The event includes the area’s best food provided by Norwich and the surrounding towns, a softball game featuring the Norwich Police and the Norwich Fire Departments, music provided by the band “Malena”, a gamut of raffles, drinks and more!

Officer Ley was wounded in the line of duty on January 7, 2013 in Norwich, Connecticut. Officer Ley was first transported to Backus Hospital but then, hospital officials took him by ambulance to Yale New Hospital. From there, Doctors performed necessary procedures for Officer Ley.  His current condition is good, but there is still a long road to recovery for this local hero.
The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers will host the 2013 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, August 13. Red Wings Host Relay for Life Event on June 29

The Rochester Red Wings are set to host the first-ever American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in the City of Rochester on June 29, 2013 at Frontier Field.

The overnight, community walk around the warning track at Frontier Field will begin with a Survivor Lap at 7:00 p.m. on June 29 and conclude the following morning, June 30, with a Fight Back Ceremony at 7:00 a.m.

In between, participants will take turns walking, running or otherwise circling the track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. In addition, the celebration will include music, dancing, games, food and a candlelight vigil at nightfall to honor cancer survivors and caregivers and to remember those lost to cancer.

“The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a truly amazing event and we could not be more proud as an organization to host a Relay event at Frontier Field this season,” said Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason. “Everyone in some way, shape or form as been affected by cancer and this event is a great way to honor the victims and survivors as well as fight back against this terrible disease.”

Relay participants can sign up individually or as a member of a team at www.relayforlife.org/redwingsny and are encouraged to raise money prior to the event. Participants who raise over $100 will receive an official Rochester Red Wings Relay for Life T-shirt.

Boux, Clotile flex their muscles for MDA

Zephyr Field was home to the third annual Muscle Walk hosted by the Greater New Orleans Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) on Saturday, March 9.

The venue served as a backdrop for more than 700 supporters and friends, as they took the field for a walk around the park in support of muscular dystrophy research. Participants marched around the warning track of the stadium with the “Pocket Aces” brass band leading the way.

The event drew laughter, music, and even a cupcake eating contest sponsored by the Kupcake Factory.

Boudreaux and Clotile welcomed friends to their home, including Gumbo and Sir Saint from the New Orleans Saints, Bones and Mojo from the New Orleans Voodoo, along with the Voodoo Dolls. All mascots and participants took part in a dance competition, crafts for kids, and a fire truck display courtesy of the Jefferson Parish Fire Department.

Each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association hosts Muscle Walks across the country to help raise funds for research and medical support, the largest event of its kind in the United States. This year, the event raised $50,000.00 to support local MDA initiatives.

“Our annual family-reunion style fundraiser is not just about raising funds to help in the fight against muscle disease and ALS,” said April Catarella, MDA Executive Director-New Orleans.  “It’s about getting our families together and raising awareness with the public. This year, we couldn’t have been more excited to have Zephyr Field graciously host this event. Each year we continue to grow, and the facility really enabled us to expand and create a truly memorable experience for our families. Not to mention the unique opportunity to have a second-line around the field.”

“Their staff also went above and beyond in accommodating our needs. We hope to have found our Muscle Walk home for years to come.”

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.  The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

Fisher Cats Foundation to Host Charity Golf Classic on June 3

MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Fisher Cats Foundation, the charitable arm of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, announced it will host a charity golf tournament on June 3, 2013, at Stonebridge Country Club in Goffstown. The 18-hole scramble will raise money to benefit the Child Advocacy Center of Hillsborough County, a program of the Granite State Children’s Alliance with locations in Manchester and Nashua.

The tournament will tee off at 9 a.m. at Stonebridge, with registration and a continental breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.  The event will include a shotgun start followed by a lobster and steak lunch, raffle, and awards ceremony.

“The Fisher Cats Foundation is proud to create a new event to benefit such a worthy cause in our community,” said Fisher Cats President Rick Brenner.  “With our great partners at Stonebridge Country Club we look forward to hosting a fun, challenging event that will support children and families in our community.”

“This event is all about creating new ways to support organizations in our community,” said Cheryl Abbott, Executive Director of the Fisher Cats Foundation.  “Golfers will enjoy a fun day on the links while knowing that their participation is helping the Child Advocacy Center of Hillsborough County strengthen the bonds of the families they support.”

“This partnership with the Fisher Cats Foundation is very exciting for our organization,” said Erin McIntyre, Program Director of the CAC of Hillsborough County.  “We are grateful that they see the importance of our community coming together to help child victims of crime and ultimately stop the cycle of violence.”

Registrations are being taken for foursomes for $750. The event will include prizes for low gross and net scores as well as longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests on the course.
