Blue Wahoos, Covenant Care help 97-year-old WW II fighter pilot fulfill wish

August 24, 2019

Attired in a fighter pilot’s suit, Albert J. Lane clutched a cold beer in his left hand and a century of life spirit in his heart.

Mr. Lane, a U.S. Army fighter pilot in World War II, had just taken one final flight Friday night, which included a flyover at Blue Wahoos Stadium, perfectly timed after the National Anthem, as a cheering, sellout crowd waved at the vintage aircraft.

Through Pensacola’s Covenant Care, a Blue Wahoos corporate partner and its “My Wish” program, Mr. Lane was able to exit his wheelchair and settle into the co-pilot’s cockpit of a vintage, dual-wing, 1943 Boeing N2S-4 Stearman aircraft and fulfill his own wish.

It was 82 years ago when Mr. Lane, a Michigan native, last climbed into an open cockpit plane of that era, training for a future role as a B-17 Bomber in the United States Army. He remembered how to do it again Friday night.

“How about that! I got in that plane,” said Mr. Lane, excitedly, about an hour after the flight, as young children and admiring adults gathered around him on the stadium concourse.

It created a powerful, emotional scene that made even Jhoan Duran‘s no-hit bid into the seventh inning, along with the Blue Wahoos eventual 3-2 win against the Jackson Generals, seem secondary on this memorable night.

“That was really special to see,” said Blue Wahoos manager Ramon Borrego, who stood and cheered from the dugout as Mr. Lane was honored on the first base line in the bottom of the sixth inning. “When you see a guy like him who went to World War II and served this country…I was thinking about it and thought, ‘Wow, this guy fought in World War II. He gave everything to his country.’

“And he still had energy. He began to get up from that wheelchair. That was amazing to see. I could think and see this man, say back when he was in his 20’s in that airplane.”

Mr. Lane lives in Greenwood, a small town near Marianna in Jackson County, about two hours east from Pensacola. When Covenant Care got involved and arranged a My Wish request, the Blue Wahoos joined to help provide the flyover experience at the stadium.

“It’s such a great tie-in for us,” said Blue Wahoos president Jonathan Griffith. “The wishes Covenant Care grants are local and regional and in our own footprint, so it’s awesome to be part of, and meets our own mission to improve the quality of life in our area. It’s very cool to be part of this.”

The My Wish program began about a year ago and has provided a couple hundred such final wishes, according to Covenant Care president and CEO Jeff Mislevy.

“We thought about how do we connect donors to these wishes. And it’s a unique platform,” Mislevy said. “Because an individual donor has an opportunity to entirely support a wish for someone. You make that person to person connection and there is just so much power in that.

“I wanted to be here to see him fly over. It chokes you up in a way. I can’t imagine the emotion that must be pouring through his veins right now. That’s what powers us to do this. And this was unique to him.”

The gold vintage bi-plane that Mr. Lane was flown in was provided by Pensacola’s Roy Kinsey, who operates Veterans Flight and annually participates in the Pensacola Beach Air Show.

Kinsey and others at Pensacola Aviation Center helped Mr. Lane from his wheelchair. They aided him to climb on a step-stool, hoisted him on the wing and into the open-air co-pilot cockpit of the plane. Kinsey then flew the aircraft.

Lane’s physician, Robin Albritton, who lives in Marianna and works there at Jackson Hospital, was at Blue Wahoos Stadium standing on the concourse, watching the flyover.

“When Covenant Care called me two weeks ago to tell me what they were doing, I put my phone down and cried,” said Albritton, his voice wavering with emotion. “He is a real American hero. He deserves this so much.

“Having taken care of him for the past eight years, I knew he probably got into that plane by himself. That man is sharp as a tack. He first came to me at 90-years-old and gave me the biggest, ol’ hug. I’ve had long conversations with him when he visits. I have done just enough to not get in his way these years. To see this is unbelievable. People like him remind me of why I do this.”

After the plane returned to Pensacola Aviation, Mr. Lane and his group traveled to Blue Wahoos Stadium. Covenant Care staff were there waiting to congratulate the World War II veteran.

The smile on his face, the throng of strangers, including so many children, who wanted to meet him and get his autograph, were poignant examples of how meaningful, how special this experience became.

RiverDogs, Boeing Announce Joint Partnership to Recognize Military Members and Families

February 26, 2019

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Boeing has been named a 20/20 Partner of the Charleston RiverDogs, making the world’s largest aerospace company one of a group of partners committed to the vision of RiverDogs baseball and Joe Riley Park for the future.

Accompanying Budweiser and MUSC Health as a 20/20 partner, Boeing joins the Charleston club in strengthening the relationship between strong community-minded businesses and the RiverDogs. Boeing’s connection with the RiverDogs will offer several opportunities to showcase both organizations’ commitment to recognize, honor, and support military and veteran personnel and their families.

“The RiverDogs remain steadfast in our efforts to honor the military in the Lowcountry and bring awareness to the effort and sacrifice of veterans. We are thrilled to be partnering with Boeing to further these initiatives,” said Dave Echols, President and General Manager of the Charleston RiverDogs.

“Veterans and their families are a vital part of our company, our community, and our country. We are thrilled to partner with the Charleston RiverDogs to thank our veterans for their service and celebrate their contributions with America’s favorite pastime,” said Ashley Holbrook, Director of National Strategy and Engagement, Government Operations, Boeing South Carolina.

Exhibiting Boeing and the RiverDogs’ commitment to honoring the armed forces, a new, single, black seat, the POW/MIA “Chair of Honor,” will be a permanent fixture at The Joe all season long. The RiverDogs will host a dedication ceremony prior to the first pitch of the second game of the season on Friday, April 12.

Along with honoring the memory of past service members, Boeing will join forces with the RiverDogs in hosting three Military Appreciation Nights to honor active and retired military members in the local community on Saturday, May 25, Monday, July 1, and Friday, August 2. In conjunction with Boeing, the RiverDogs will offer complementary tickets to all active and retired service members and their families for these special event games.

Not just limited to three home dates throughout the season, RiverDogs players and staff will also wear specialty red jerseys at each Friday home game, expressing their support of the armed forces. As part of Red Shirt Fridays, fans wearing a red shirt may receive $1 off regular ticket pricing at the box office with the option to donate that dollar back to support various veteran’s non-profit groups in the Lowcountry. During an inning break at every Friday home game, a deployed military serviceman, servicewoman – – or veteran unable to attend the game – will be called and thanked by all in attendance for their service.

At each of the RiverDogs’ 70 home tilts during the year, Boeing will help present the “Hero of the Game,” recognizing an outstanding veteran while giving the special guest and their family a VIP treatment at the ballpark. As the Hero of the Game, honorees and their families are treated to the Riley Park Club experience, recognized on the video board and through public address with a description of their contributions to our country. Along with honoring one “Hero of the Game,” there will be a special in-game recognition, asking all veterans in attendance to stand at each of the RiverDogs’ home contests during the year.

For further details about the RiverDogs and Boeing’s military appreciation programs, how to nominate a veteran to be honored at a game this season, and complementary military tickets available throughout the year, visit the RiverDogs’ Military homepage at riverdogs.com/military.

On the heels of their second straight year eclipsing 300,000 fans through the turnstiles, the RiverDogs have already begun preparations for another year down at The Joe. RiverDogs season tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are now available for the 2019 campaign by contacting the RiverDogs front office at 843-577-3647 (DOGS). The RiverDogs begin their home schedule on April 11 when they host the Greensboro Grasshoppers at The Joe, preceded by a weeklong road trip. RoughRiders Foundation volunteers at DFW National Cemetery

July 3, 2018

FRISCO, Texas (July 3, 2018) – Frisco RoughRiders pitcher Tyler Davis and members of the RoughRiders Foundation spent Monday morning volunteering at the DFW National Cemetery.

“I, personally, think it was a great experience,” Davis said. “I saw it as a way for me to be able to go out there and show respect to the people who have given a lot for our country; past, present and future.”

The group assisted in the cleaning of headstones, a process which is necessary four times a year to help maintain the nearly 50,000 headstones on the site. With a limited number of regular employees, the DFW National Cemetery values volunteer groups like the RoughRiders to assist in keeping the cemetery in good shape.

“Without the support and time the Frisco RoughRiders and others, we could not provide the honorable and serene resting place our Veterans deserve,” Cemetery Director Larry Williams said. “What may not be thought of is this: the Frisco RoughRiders are honoring America’s Heroes with the dedication and hard work they provide here and is deeply appreciated, not only by the staff, but the families of the 59,500 resting here.”

For more information on the RoughRiders Foundation, click here.

LexArts Inc. and Legends Seek Artist for Lou Johnson Tribute At Whitaker Bank Ballpark

March 19, 2018

WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK (Lexington, KY) – In partnership with LexArts Inc. and the Lexington Legends, Legends President/CEO Andy Shea announced to the Sweet Lou Johnson Lexington Chapter of the Society of American Baseball Research that the Legends are currently searching for an artist from the region (Kentucky and contiguous states) to create a piece to honor Lexington native, and World Series hero, “Sweet” Lou Johnson.

Sweet Lou Johnson was born in Lexington and attended Dunbar High School. He signed as a free agent for the New York Yankees in 1953, and saw his first major league action in 1962 with the Milwaukee Braves. Johnson was then traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and subsequently led the Dodgers to a World Series victory in 1965, hitting the game winning home run in a decisive game seven. After various injuries, Johnson retired from baseball in 1970. He ended his career batting .258 with 48 home runs, 232 RBI and 50 stolen bases.

The partnership between the Legends and LexArts Inc. began in 2017 after the Legends hosted an On The Table event. Community members voiced their opinions of ways to improve the city in different capacities to make it more vibrant and engaged. During the same time, Lexington Mayor Jim Gray called for a more diverse narrative for public art, which led to the idea of incorporating Sweet Lou Johnson into Whitaker Bank Ballpark. The Legends and LexArts Inc. applied, and received, a grant from Blue Grass Community Trust Foundation to begin the first phase of the project to seek proposals from artists around the region. They not only wanted to honor Lexington’s history, but the incredible contribution that Sweet Lou Johnson made to the game of baseball.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to pay homage to Lou Johnson. Not only will this showcase Johnson and the impact he had in the world of baseball, but also bring together sports and the arts at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.” said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea. “We are proud to be able to honor this part of Lexington history and showcase the contribution that Sweet Lou Johnson made to baseball.”

Chasers Nominated for John Henry Moss Community Service Award

September 26, 2017

The Pacific Coast League has announced that the Omaha Storm Chasers’ franchise is the circuit’s nominee for Minor League Baseball’s John Henry Moss Community Service Award. Each league in Minor League Baseball nominated an organization, with the overall winner announced at the annual Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida in December.

“A truly great organization is one that shows a high level of commitment to its own community,” stated Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro. “We are proud to be representing the Pacific Coast League with this nomination, which is a testament to the time and commitment of our front office staff, as well as the Kansas City Royals organization, to the Omaha Metro community.”

Over the course of the 2017 campaign, Chasers Charities, the charitable arm of the Omaha Storm Chasers, donated $808,182 to local charities, setting an all-time record in charitable giving for the fourth consecutive year. The Storm Chasers assisted over 1,500 different organizations, and were also visible in the community with over 420 mascot and player appearances. Front office employees also donated 740 hours of community service throughout the year.

73 different organizations were provided a platform at Werner Park at the Sprint Community Organization of the Night. Over $18,000 was raised through the McDonald’s and Huber Chevrolet Hurl the Pearl promotion for the Ronald McDonald House, while more than $21,000 was raised for various local charities including Methodist Hospital Founation and Moving Veterans Forward via four Jersey Auctions. Initiatives also included Hy-Vee Canned Food Sundays, with nearly 5,000 items donated to Heartland Hope Mission, in addition to Chasers FUNdamentals, with Chasers Charities teaming with DREAM to put on baseball clinics introducing youth to baseball.

Chasers Charities also offered the Chasin’ Dreams Grant, donating a total in excess of $9,000 to help non-profit organizations that operate youth softball/baseball programs make major renovations. Two Jackie Robinson Athletic Scholarships worth $1,000 each were also awarded through Chasers Charities and The Weitz Company, while partnering with the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office for the 15th annual Why I Want To Go To College Essay Contest.

The Storm Chasers also held their third annual Chasers Community Week presented by Summit Dental, which included the Jirschele Family Memorial Golf Outing to help benfit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as player appearances at Children’s Hospital and the Southwest YMCA and hosting Bellevue Buddy Baseball at Werner Park. The nine-day event culminated in hosting The Wall That Heals, an exhibit that featured a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. The exhibit was open 24 hours a day from August 3-6 at Werner Park, with the Storm Chasers’ Military Appreciation game preceded the exhibit’s closing ceremonies.

Werner Park also served as a site for local organizations to use the stadium as a venue to host large-scale fundraisers. Those special events included the “Boxer 500” to benefit the Great Plains Colon Cancer Task Force, the “Walk to Defeat ALS”, SHARP Race towards Brain Aneurysm, Heart Heroes Run, and Nebraska 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

PawSox and Rhode Island Blood Center to Host Second Annual 9/11 Blood Drive at McCoy Stadium

September 1, 2017

For the second year in a row, the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rhode Island Blood Center are teaming up on September 11 to host a “Day of Remembrance” Blood Drive in the Visiting Clubhouse at McCoy Stadium. The drive will take place from 1:00pm-8:30pm, and fans who donate blood will receive a $5 Dunkin’ Donuts Gift Card and a PawSox Baseball Cap.

Last year on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, members of the PawSox community set a club record by donating 71 units of blood for the Rhode Island Blood Center at McCoy Stadium. PawSox blood drives in past years had garnered less than a dozen units.

“When America was attacked on 9-11, it affected us, unified us, and inspired us to do what we could to help,” said PawSox President Dr. Charles A. Steinberg. “The PawSox commemorate this spirit with our annual ‘Day of Remembrance’ Blood Drive, when again, we come together as a community to do what we can–this time to save the lives of our friends and neighbors.”

There are over 370,000 people in Rhode Island who are eligible to donate blood, but only about 5% of the state’s population donates on a regular basis. Over 200 units of blood are needed each day by the RIBC, which is where people in the PawSox Community can make a difference.

“It’s important for more people to begin donating blood and try to give as often as possible,” said Kara LeBlanc, Communications Manager of the Rhode Island Blood Center. “Unfortunately, we live in a world where disasters happen too frequently. Because blood donations take two days to test and process, it is the blood on the shelves from regular donors that save lives.”

Fans who donate blood will also be able to take photos on the field, and take a trip down the PawSox Hall of History.

For more information, please contact PawSox Director of Communications and Community Relations, Joe Bradlee, at jbradlee@pawsox.com

South Bend Cubs Host Fallen Heroes Day on Saturday, August 27

August 22, 2017

SOUTH BEND, IN – On Sunday, August 27, the South Bend Cubs will honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the community on Fallen Heroes Day presented by Midland Engineering. In addition to the recognition, the club will announce the 2017 Corporal Paul Deguch Community Service Award recipient.

The Corporal Paul Deguch Community Service Award is presented annually to a South Bend Cubs player who demonstrates outstanding service to the Michiana community. The award is in honor of Corporal Paul Deguch, a City of South Bend police officer, who was killed in the line of duty in August 1997. Members of the Deguch family will be on hand to present the award.

“We are honored to keep the memory of Corporal Deguch alive with this community service award,” said South Bend Cubs President Joe Hart. “Everyday police officers, firefighters, EMT’s and service volunteers put their lives on the line to serve and protect, some of which give the ultimate sacrifice. This day is to remember all who lost their lives protecting our community.

Members of the South Bend Police Department will line the field in their squad cars to honor their fallen brother and participate in the award ceremony.
