Hit The Books underway in 31 area Elementary Schools

Annual reading program assists children in achieving goals

MISSOULA, MONT. – The Missoula Osprey with help of their partners United Way of Missoula County & Sylvan Learning kicked off the clubs biggest and most successful community program, Hit the Books in 31 area elementary schools on Monday.

The Osprey started the Hit the Books Reading Program in their inaugural season in 1999 and has seen participation grow over time. 5,276 students spanning 246 classrooms are participating in the 2014 edition of Hit the Books, where annually nearly 50,000 books are read.

“Hit the Books is one of the best reading programs in all of professional baseball,” said Osprey Vice President/General Manager Jeff Griffin. “The program is incentive based designed for Missoula-area students to set goals and follow through with achieving them over a seven week period.”

“Learning should be fun and reading should be a joy for all kids,” said longtime supporter and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of Missoula County Susan Hay Patrick. “We are happy to partner with the Missoula Osprey on Hit the Books to help give over 5,000 Missoula County kids not only baseball tickets, but a love of reading that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

Hit the Books is set up like a baseball game, meaning there are nine innings (three books equals one inning), where students receive a different prize for each inning completed. Every student that participates gets a letter of achievement, a free ride at the Carousel of Missoula and is entered to win a Kindle Reader and a summer of tutoring at Sylvan Learning. Other prizes include Osprey themed school supplies, an exclusive dessert party with team mascot, Ollie and ticket vouchers to an Osprey game. Over $100,000 in prizes was awarded to area students in 2013.

The program culminates with a celebration at one of eleven Osprey home games designated as Hit the Books Nights, where students are honored for their achievements.

“Sylvan Learning is excited to partner with the Missoula Osprey to encourage young children in our community to develop a love for reading,” said Michael Hoag, Director at Sylvan Learning.

“The program wouldn’t be what it is today without the support of our partners,” said Griffin. “We are also very proud of all of time the students and teachers put in to make it a success. Educators tell us the program helps motivate students as summer vacation approaches.”

NEFCU/Lake Monsters “CHAMP Sightings”

Free CHAMP appearances offered to non-profit organizations

BURLINGTON, VT — New England Federal Credit Union and the Vermont Lake Monsters will be teaming up this year to actively support the community by offering free CHAMP appearances (called “CHAMP Sightings”) to non-profit organizations and other programs that share their commitment to enhancing the well being of the local communities.

“Over the past 20 years, CHAMP has become an integral part of the community, but there are still events each year that we have wanted to participate in but were unable to.” said Nate Cloutier, Lake Monsters’ General Manager. “We are very fortunate to have teamed up with such a wonderful community partner such as NEFCU, who shares our vision for giving back to the community and having fun while doing so.”

CHAMP, the mascot for the Lake Monsters since the team’s first season in the New York-Penn League back in 1994, has always been available for appearances in the community for a fee. But this new partnership between NEFCU and the Lake Monsters will give certain organizations and programs the opportunity to have CHAMP make an appearance at their event for no charge.

Organizations and programs interested in participating in the “CHAMP Sightings” program, and having CHAMP attend their event for free must submit a formal application that can be downloaded here from CHAMP Sightings page in Community section of website. Please note that depending on the event location, travel costs may apply. Interested parties should submit a formal application as soon as possible, as appearances are limited.

“The Vermont Lake Monsters and NEFCU share a deep commitment to supporting the community,” said Cindy Morgan, NEFCU Senior Marketing Executive. “We are pleased to help bring ‘CHAMP Sightings’ to organizations in our area.”

Sky Sox around the Community in February

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Spring Training is right around the corner and as baseball season approaches, you can find the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at several events throughout the community. At each event you will be able to pick up your 2014 pocket schedule and speak to a representative in person about the variety of events going on throughout the preseason and into the season. 2014 ticket packages also will be available to purchase.

Here’s a quick list of where you can find your hometown team:

Friday, Feb. 7 – Downtown Olympic Celebration – As the Winter Olympics in Sochi kick off, Sox the Fox will join some of the Sky Sox staff to celebrate with the rest of Colorado Springs at the Downtown Celebration. We will be located just north of Orchard Oven’s Bakery near the Bijou intersection.

Friday, Feb. 7 – American Heart Association Fashion Show at Chapel Hills Mall – The Sky Sox will also be at the Chapel Hills Mall on Friday supporting the AHA as they raise awareness for heart health during Heart Month.

Saturday, Feb. 8 – Bourbon Brothers Grand Opening with Goose Gossage – Along with baseball Hall of Famer Goose Gossage, you can find the Sky Sox at the Grand Opening of Bourbon Brothers located at 13021 Bass Pro Drive.

Friday, Feb. 14 – Sunday, Feb. 16 – Sports and RV show at Penrose Event Center – Sox the Fox will be out of his den once again as he visits the Sports and RV Show on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 15 – Colorado College Hockey Game – The Sky Sox are fans of all local sports teams, join us for a great night of hockey and have a chance to win prizes by spinning our prize wheel. The Tigers will take on Western Michigan at 7:07 p.m. at World Arena.

Saturday, Feb. 22 – Galaxy Fest – Colorado Springs’ Premier Multimedia Multi Genre Convention will run from Jan. 21-Jan. 23 at Antlers Hilton, 4 S. Cascade Ave., but you can also visit with Sky Sox baseball about all your needs on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Saturday, March 1 – Mascot Race 5k for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – Here’s your chance to cheer on your favorite mascot to help out a great cause for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Saturday, March 1 – Air Force Basketball – Join us when the Air Force Academy takes on UNLV at 2 p.m. at Clune Arena.

Friday, March 7 – Colorado College Hockey Game – We will be back at Colorado College to support the Tigers when they take on St. Cloud State University at 7:07 p.m. at World Arena.

Saturday, March 8 – National Anthem Tryouts at Chapel Hills Mall – If you would like a chance to show off your talent in front of thousands of Sky Sox fans, join us on March 8 for 2014 National Anthem tryouts.

Spotlight: Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Hy-Vee Shadow Lake – Nov. 14

­The Storm Chasers staff will serve as bell ringers for donations to the Salvation Army in front of Hy-Vee Shadow Lake on Thursday, November 14th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is the third consecutive year the Storm Chasers staff has served as bell ringers. Mascot Stormy will be participating from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • SilverRidge Assisted Living Visit (2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.) – Before their “Birthday Party” on November 15th in the Storm Front Team Store, all three Chasers mascots will be visiting the residents of SilverRidge Assisted Living (sponsor of the Silver Chasers Club) to celebrate their “Birthday” in a private event.

  • Hands of the Heartland Ribbon Cutting (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) – Mascot Casey will attend this Bellevue Chamber Ribbon Cutting Celebration, to welcome this new business to the community.
  • Stormy & Vortex’s Birthday Party (4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) – Stormy and Vortex celebrate the third anniversary of their introduction as mascots at the Storm Front Team Store. Guests are encouraged to bring new unwrapped toys to benefit Toys for Tots and in exchange will receive a 40% coupon to the store (up to three toys max per person). Free refreshments will be provided and party games will be played.

  • Westroads Mall Santa’s Arrival Event (9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.) – Stormy will join friends of Westroads Mall to await Santa’s arrival. Once Santa arrives, Stormy will be part of Santa’s parade through the mall.

Monday, November 18

  • Majestix Salon Ribbon Cutting (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) – Mascot Casey will attend this Bellevue Chamber Ribbon Cutting Celebration, to welcome this new business to the community.

Saturday, November 23

  • Open Door Mission Drumsticks On Wheels – Members of the Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will volunteer their time to deliver the fixings of a proper Thanksgiving dinner to those in need in the Omaha Metro throughout the day. This is the third consecutive year the Chasers have participated in this cause.

LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws will host their 14th annual Breakfast With Buster Holiday Food & Toy Drive on Saturday, December 14th from 9 am – 11 am at FirstEnergy Park. The team will collect unwrapped toys and non-perishable food to benefit the Salvation Army of Ocean County.

Buster and his holiday friend, Santa Claus, will be at the park to greet fans who donate.

Bagels will be provided by Manhattan Bagel of Brick while the BlueClaws will provide coffee for fans. The free event will be held in the Upstairs Club on the Luxury Suite level.

“This has been one of our best events for the last 13 years,” said BlueClaws General Manager Brandon Marano. “We look forward to another successful holiday food and toy drive benefiting those less fortunate in our area.”

The BlueClaws are the Jersey Shore’s top stop for affordable, family entertainment. They have led the South Atlantic League and New Jersey in attendance in all 13 years of existence.

Spikes recognized as a PA “Waste Watcher”

The State College Spikes were recently recognized by The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) – Keystone Chapter for the team’s outstanding recycling program and related ballpark and community outreach efforts from the 2012 calendar year.

The Spikes were one of 76 municipalities, counties, private businesses, individuals, and community organizations to be recognized as part of the Pennsylvania Waste Watchers Program. This program highlights recycling, waste reduction, reuse, and composting programs in Pennsylvania that have exhibited exemplary performance.

The team and Medlar Field at Lubrano Park were recognized in part for the distinction as the world’s first L.E.E.D Certified ballpark and for the team’s dedication to promoting green initiatives during home games. In addition, the Spikes’ popular school program called “Project I.K.E.,” which stands for “Inspiring Kids to be Eco-Friendly,” has provided dozens of free and fun school assemblies the past three years. The program, which has been sponsored by the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority, incorporates team mascots, players and staff to teach children about the importance of “going green” and incorporating eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.

Of the 76 Waste Watcher recipients, 19 were based in Centre County. The Spikes would like to congratulate fellow local “Waste Watchers” Autoport Restaurant, Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority, Columbia Gas of PA Inc., Corl Street Elementary School, Foxdale Village, Gray’s Woods Elementary, Harris Township Memorial Day Festival, Harrison’s Wine Grill & Catering, Mount Nittany Middle School, Park Forest Elementary School, PSU School of Hospitality Management, Restek Corp., State College Friends School, The Art Alliance of Central PA, the Borough of State College, the Centre County Grange Encampment and Fair, the Prom Attire Event, and Village Eatinghouse.

SAN JOSE, CA– The San Jose Giants released today their 2013 Community Report. From charitable donations to mascot appearances to community-centered evening’s at Municipal Stadium, the San Jose Giants were a consistent presence throughout the South Bay in 2013. The report is a complete detail of the organization’s community involvement and contributions in the past calendar year.

“I want to personally thank all of our fans and partners for their tremendous support of the team and its place in the community”, said Daniel Orum, San Jose Giants President and CEO. “With over $450,000 raised for charitable causes, 2013 was another record-breaking year for the organization.”

The 2013 Community Report showcases the variety of charitable efforts the San Jose Giants are involved with both at and away from Municipal Stadium. Highlights of the report include hundreds of appearances made by San Jose Giants personnel, events in partnership with the Giants Community Fund to help underserved youth and in-kind donations to more than 650 local and national organizations totaling over $450,000.

Community Love: 2013 Thus Far

Scranton-W-B-RailRiders-logoIt’s more than numbers. It’s more than hours or dollars. It’s human. It’s real. It’s one of life’s most paradoxical, yet overwhelming true truths. An intangible concept, an experience really, that resounds with a firmness greater than Montage Mountain herself. It is better to give than to receive. Year one of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) and the new PNC Field afforded the new-look franchise and the good folks of NEPA to get to know each other once more through more than just baseball. And the giving? Well, it sure felt good.

Below is a quick checklist of the highlight totals in 2013:

  • Front office staff hours volunteered: 890.5
  • Player hours volunteered: 202.5
  • Mascot appearances: 130
  • Donations: $24,044 (tickets/merchandise/autographed memorabilia)
  • Hurl the Pearl donation (Boys & Girls Club): $12,092
  • Allied Health Services donation: $16,000

Total donation including monetary value of volunteered hours from team/staff, all monetary donations and in-kind donations: $217,737

“The sum totals sound good, but what sticks with me are the individual moments,” said RailRiders president/GM Rob Crain. “I got more goosebumps from seeing the impact of the efforts spearheaded by our staff and community relations manager Rachel Mark than I’ve had at any other point in my life. It was a very good year.”

The Community Organization of the Night program made its debut this season. Each of the team’s 72 home games spotlighted a local non-profit/civic organization. That CON had the opportunity to spread its message to every guest through a pre-game on-field interview, a ceremonial first pitch, an on-air radio interview and a concourse table display.

The RailRiders’ Military Appreciation Program was implemented this season to show the team’s support of our nation’s active and retired military. The service person and his/her family were honored. Activities included complimentary game tickets, a pre-game on-field interview and a ceremonial first pitch.

SWB’s patriotic pride continued with another new tip of the cap, Setting A Seat Aside. To honor men and women affiliated with our nation’s military whom could not be at PNC Field, one significant seat (section 13, row 15, seat one) will forever remain empty and unsold.

A standard from previous years got a big boost as the Adopt-A-Field Program upped the number of local fields renovated to four. Front office staff and grounds crew members combined to give the area little league/softball fields a big league facelift. Staffers spent the entire day at each park cutting the infield, rebuilding pitching mounds, fertilizing/mowing grass, cleaning dugouts and more. The fields were chosen through a contest on the team’s Facebook page with representatives of local leagues posting pictures of their field and describing its renovation needs. The four photos that received the most “likes” on Facebook were the lucky winners (Avoca/Dupont Little League; South Scranton Little League; Staback Park; Marvine Dutch Gap).

As the top affiliate of the New York Yankees, the RailRiders proudly played their part in the organization’s annual HOPE (Helping Others Persevere and Excel) Week effort. The week-long community outreach program’s purpose is to touch as many liveChildrens-Miracle-Network-logo125s as possible in your area. Members of the RailRiders’ coaching staff, players and front office folks made their way throughout NEPA.

The week included a Children’s Miracle Network Day at the Ballpark on July 7. Twin boys who have overcome the worst of health adversities spent time on the field with players during batting practice, Little-League-Challenger-lostopped by the pre-game clubhouse, threw out ceremonial first pitches and spent the game in the owner’s suite with friends and family. One day later, the RailRiders hosted a baseball game for the Lackawanna County Challenger Little League. LCCLL gives children with special needs the chance to participate in athletics. RailRiders coaches and players spent the entire game on the field, coaching and encouraging the boys and girls while helping them to bat, run and slide. A ballpark lunch followed. July 9 meant two surprise hospital visits to Moses Taylor and Geisinger in downtown Scranton. Patients interacted with the players while receiving giveaways, autographs and an overall fun time. The week concluded with players and front office staffers visiting thB&G-of-NEPA-logoe Boys & Girls Club of NEPA. The morning was spent playing baseball, billiards and computer games. The epic conclusion sported a dodgeball match between the RailRiders and the Boys & Girls club.

Voluntary-Action-Center-logoOn Aug. 21, a tag-team food drive by the RailRiders and the Voluntary Action Center of NEPA sought out to stock as many food pantries in NEPA as possible. Fans received free game tickets in exchange for non-perishable food items. In addition to the food from fans, the RailRiders also presented the Voluntary Action Center with a check for $1,300 to assist with the fight against hunger in NEPA.

The Shorebirds Community Fund and Sherman paid a visit to the Northwestern Elementary School PTA meeting in Mardela Springs to award them a check for $500. Northwestern Elementary School was one of over a 100 schools that participated in the 2013 Hit the Books reading program presented by Dr. James M. Crouse at The Brace Place and came in second place in the ticket redemption contest.

Fifth Third Field to Host MVDSA Buddy Walk

Dayton, Ohio – Fifth Third Field will host the 11th Annual Miami Valley Down Syndrome Association Buddy Walk on Saturday, September 7th from 9 a.m. – 12 noon. The Buddy Walk, which raises awareness and promotes inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome, will take place at Fifth Third Field for the second-consecutive year. Registration is open to the public and costs $10 for anyone aged nine or older, with every dollar benefitting the MVDSA.

Fifth Third Field will open its gates for day-of registration starting at 8:30 a.m. on September 7th, but pre-registration is available at http://mvdsa.donordrive.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.event&eventID=500. Donations will also be accepted online or at the registration table.

Activities around the ballpark begin at 9 a.m. The Entertainment Fun Zone will be open with face painters and games. Dragons mascots Heater and Gem will roam the concourse and take pictures with those in attendance. The one-mile walk around Fifth Third Field begins at 10 a.m., with the post-walk fun continuing until noon when raffle prize winners will be announced.

Bees to Host “Bee Healthy Week” during Final Homestand

SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake Bees have partnered with Intermountain LDS Hospital, SelectHealth, and the Utah Department of Health in support of “Bee Healthy Week,” which will take place during the team’s final homestand from August 31-September 2. The event is designed as an informative and motivational initiative for fans to focus on improved health and wellness.

The Bees are encouraging fans to participate in six Bee Healthy Team challenges during the three sponsored games, with the first 500 fans who complete at least four of the six challenges receiving an official Bee Healthy Team t-shirt courtesy of the Bee Healthy Team.

The six Bee Healthy Team challenges include:

  1. Walk around the ballpark three times via the main concourse, the equivalent of one mile, or accumulate 1,000 steps on the SelectHealth pedometer during the game.
  2. Spin the Utah Department of Health’s Wheel of Health at its booth on the main concourse.
  3. Undergo blood pressure testing at the LDS Hospital booth on the main concourse.
  4. Undergo Body Mass Index (BMI) testing at the SelectHealth booth on the main concourse and receive a free pedometer.
  5. Participate in the in-game flex cam sponsored by LDS Hospital.
  6. Sign a pledge to be tobacco-free at the Utah Department of Health booth on the main concourse.

Joining those participating in the challenges will be Bumble, the official mascot of the Bees, and Toothy, SelectHealth’s mascot. Utah Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game on August 31 along with representatives from LDS Hospital and SelectHealth. In addition, the first 2,000 fans in attendance on Monday, September 2 will receive a Salt Lake Bees/Bee Healthy jersey backpack.

The Bees will conclude the regular season with a four-game series against the Reno Aces from August 30-September 2 at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Friday, August 30 features a Mike Trout bobblehead giveaway while a postgame fireworks show will follow the game on Saturday, August 31. Blood Drive at Pfitzner Stadium in Association with INOVA Set for Monday, August 19th

Woodbridge, VA-The Potomac Nationals are proud to partner with INOVA for a blood drive at Pfitzner Stadium on Monday, August 19th from 3:30pm to 8:00pm.

Fans who complete the donor screening process and donate blood will receive two grandstand tickets to the P-Nats game on Sunday, August 25th.

To make an appointment to donate blood, fans can either call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (256-6372) or visit www.inova.org/donateblood. Once on the website, click on “Schedule a Donation” then “Donate Blood” and use sponsor code 7667.

During the blood drive, the Nationals will have the Kids Zone open and Uncle Slam will also make an appearance.

Requirements to donate blood: must be 17 years and older (16 with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds, also need to be in good health on day of donating blood.

Premera Care-A-Van Provides Smiles

Spokane, WA – For over 10 years the Spokane Indians and Premera Blue Cross have teamed up for the Premera Care-A-Van, a program where children in local hospitals receive a visit from OTTO the Mascot and current Indians players. The first of three Care-A-Van visits was July 17th at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

“We love supporting these types of events and are thankful for our partnership with Premera Blue Cross,” said Senior Vice President Otto Klein. “These brave kids are going through more than we know and it’s rewarding for everyone to see them smile.”

In addition to the visit from players Travis Dean, Cody Ege and John Straka, OTTO The Mascot also made an appearance. The children received a Care-A-Van Backpack full of Spokane Indians items courtesy of Premera Blue Cross. The Indians also provide tickets for former patients who have now recovered and are living in the Spokane area.

The Indians and Premera Blue Cross have two more Care-A-Vans planned for this year, including August 20th at at Shriners Hospital for Children. All media are invited to attend.

The Indians will return home next Tuesday, July 23rd, for a quick three-game homestand against the Vancouver Canadians to start the second half of the Northwest League season. Phanatic, Troop Supply Drive on June 27th

LAKEWOOD, NJ – The BlueClaws welcome the Phillie Phanatic to FirstEnergy Park on Thursday, June 27th, and at the game, they will hold their annual Troop Supply and Care Package Drive.

The Phanatic, the world’s most famous mascot, makes the first of two trips to the ballpark this summer and between innings, he will entertain fans like only he can. The Phanatic’s appearance is presented by OceanFirst Bank.

Boxes will be set up for the Troop Supply and Care Package Drive in the front of the ballpark and fans are encouraged to donate razors, snacks, baby wipes, shampoo, soap, non-chocolate candies and sweets, sun block with SPF 40+, lip balm, writing utensils, silly string, deodorant, tissues, q-tips, white socks, batteries, insect repellent, and flashlights.

The BlueClaws will also be collecting, as always, gently used cell phones at the NJNG Information Booth to benefit Cell Phones for Soldiers.

This supply and care package drive is in conjunction with the Monmouth-Ocean Central Labor Council Military Committee, Monmouth-Ocean Building Trade Council, National Guard, Toms River Armory, A.R.M.S, and IBEW Local 400 Military Committee.

“Military Appreciation Night here in Lakewood has been a great event these last eight years,” said Pat O’Keefe of the IBEW Local 400 Military Committee. “It’s great to see the local community come out and support the event and our Troops overseas.”

The Troop Supply and Care Package Drive takes place on Military Appreciation Night, where military groups will take in the game and there will be various pre-game ceremonies honoring military members.
