Superhero jerseys highlight Pelicans Special Olympics Night

Law Enforcement Torch Run aiming for growth in year three of partnership with Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, will host the third annual Special Olympics Night in conjunction with Superhero Night as part of “Geekend” on Saturday, April 25 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. This season, the Pelicans will wear unique superhero-themed uniforms that will be auctioned off to benefit the Special Olympics as well.

This marks the second time that Special Olympics Night will overlap with Superhero Night, although it is the first time that the Pelicans will wear superhero-themed series on this night. “The superhero theme is a natural fit for Special Olympics Night,” remarked Pelicans Senior Director of Community Jen Borowski. “All the Special Olympics athletes are superheroes in my eyes.”

Fans who wish to donate to the Special Olympics at the game will be able to do so at the Special Olympics table in the concourse or at the Guest Services booth. Proceeds from the jersey auction and 50/50 raffle will also benefit the Special Olympics.

Those that wish to bid on jerseys will be able to do so whether in attendance or not, as select jerseys will be available for bidding online. The game-worn jerseys will be autographed by the corresponding player or coach immediately following the game, and fans at the game will have the opportunity to take a photo with the player or coach as well.

Over the past two seasons, the Pelicans and the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) have helped raise over $23,000 for the Special Olympics of South Carolina through the proceeds from this event.

“This is a real passion for many of us here locally in law enforcement,” remarked Lance Corporal Felix Cruz, who is part of the LETR, which runs a handful of events in the area to raise money for Special Olympics. “We want to get as many people out there to the game as possible to help raise money for the Special Olympics. The money allows athletes locally, regionally, and nationally to train and compete in Special Olympics events, and without the financial support, many of the Special Olympics athletes would not be able to do so.”

In addition to raising money for the Special Olympics, the night also serves as a platform to highlight the Special Olympics athletes. The athletes will take part in a pre-game parade on the field, participate in a variety of on-field games and in-park promotions, and take the field with the Pelicans players at the start of the game.

Pelicans players and coaches will also hold a private meet-and-greet and autograph session with the Special Olympics athletes prior to first pitch.

The LETR runs a number of events in Horry county to help raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics, including: Teacher on the Roof, Capture the Flag Tournament, Dip, Duck and Dive Dodgeball Tournament, Tip the Waiter, St. James Got Talent, a Fashion Show at St. James, and Krispy Kreme Cops on Doughnut Shop. The Pelicans help the LETR support a number of these programs and recognize Special Olympics athletes outside of Special Olympics Night as well, including an on-field ceremony during the 2014 Carolina League postseason, in which athletes participating in the 2014 Special Olympics USA games were recognized prior to the Pelicans game.

Cougars Announce Charity Partnerships For 2015 Season

Partnerships with multiple organizations to positively impact local causes in 2015

The Kane County Cougars have announced a community outreach partnership for the 2015 season in which four organizations will receive a portion of the in-game 50/50 raffle proceeds through Ozzie’s Outreach Foundation, the Cougars’ charitable arm. Those four organizations are Project Backpack (April/May), DuPage Pads (June), Northern Illinois Food Bank (July) and Family Shelter Service (August/September). Also, the Cougars through their partnership with Acres Group, have announced that the Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment Centers will be the recipient of the charitable proceeds from this season’s “Pitch In For Charity” promotion in which fans, following select games, purchase and throw numbered tennis balls onto a target in order to win a prize.

Project Backpack (project-backpack.org) is a community-based initiative led by Elgin Community College that benefits local students who are in need of necessary school supplies.

DuPage Pads (dupagepads.org) has the solution to end homelessness with housing coupled with support services and employment which leads to improved health and economic sustainability.

Northern Illinois Food Bank (solvehungertoday.org) works with 800 community food pantries and feeding programs across 13 counties to solve hunger in northern Illinois by providing nutritious food to more than 71,000 people at risk of hunger each week. Volunteers can assist at one of their three centers including their west suburban location in Geneva.

Family Shelter Service (familyshelterservice.org), founded in 1976 and located in nearby Wheaton, transforms lives by offering help and hope to those affected by domestic violence.

Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment Centers (recovergateway.org) have provided the answers that individuals and their families need about drug and alcohol treatment. The organization has several treatment centers throughout Illinois, including nearby Aurora.

“Since the franchise’s inaugural season in 1991 and continuing through our upcoming 25^th anniversary season, the Cougars’ organization has strived to be the best possible neighbor by giving back to the community in many ways,” said Cougars Vice President/General Manager Curtis Haug.

“Through these types of initiatives, fans can see how deep our commitment is as an organization towards helping others in need,” said Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich.

Added Cougars owner Cheryl Froehlich: “We are reminded more than ever when these milestone seasons occur, that the Cougars organization is aware of how much support that has been shown to us over the years and how critically important it is to give back.”

Charity outing at Shamrock Heights Golf Course to benefit The Miracle League of the Fox Valley

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers will be teeing off for a good cause at their annual Golf Outing on Monday, July 27. The day of fun and golf will be held at Shamrock Heights Golf Course in New London and benefit The Miracle League of the Fox Valley.

A foursome may register for $350. Foursomes have the opportunity to play with a Timber Rattlers player, but that chance is based on a first come, first serve RSVP. Individuals may register for $100.

The outing tees off with registration beginning at 8:00am and a shotgun start at 9:00am. Lunch is included with registration and will be served at the turn. Snacks will be available after the round of golf from 2-4pm. A raffle drawing and awards presentation will conclude the event.

The Miracle League of the Fox Valley, an organized baseball league for children aged 4-19 with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, was formed in 2008 by Fox Valley parents Lisa and Mark Robbins. Registration is open now through March 30 for players and volunteers for the 2015 Miracle League of the Fox Valley season, which starts on June 8. The league plays their games at the John Wollner Fox Cities Miracle Field in Appleton’s Memorial Park.

Easter at the Ballpark

Generals to host concert, Easter service with Englewood Baptist

The Jackson Generals are proud to partner with Englewood Baptist Church on Easter Weekend festivities at the Ballpark in Jackson. The church will a concert and fireworks show on Saturday, April 4 and a service and egg hunt on Easter Sunday. Admission to all events is free of charge.

The weekend will begin on Saturday night with a concert headlined by contemporary Christian music artist Travis Cottrell at 7 pm. Cottrell has been nominated for 16 GMA Dove Awards in his musical career, winning two times. His 2011 single “When the Stars Burn Down” debuted atop the Billboard Praise and Worship Chart. He currently serves as the Worship Pastor at Englewood Baptist Church.

Christian hip-hop and spoken word artist Propaganda will also perform at the Ballpark on Saturday night. Fireworks provided by the City of Jackson will follow the show at approximately 9 pm. Gates open on Saturday at 5:30 pm.

Englewood Baptist Church, one of the largest religious institutions in Jackson, will hold their Easter service at the Ballpark at 10 am on Easter Sunday, April 5 with gates opening at 8 am. The service will include music from the Englewood choir and a message from Senior Pastor Jordan Easley. An Easter Egg Hunt will follow the service at 11 am in the outfield.

“We are extremely excited to host Englewood Baptist Church at our ballpark Easter weekend,” Generals’ General Manager Jason Compton said. “This a fantastic opportunity for the Generals. We hope that the Ballpark at Jackson can be a venue for more events like this in the future.”

The Jackson Generals will be providing buffets for both breakfast and brunch on Easter Sunday. Tickets must be purchased from the Generals in advance for both. Breakfast will begin when gates open at 8 am for $10 per person, and brunch will follow the service at 11:30 am for $12 per person. A menu for both meals can be found on the attached flyer.

Additionally, concession stands at the stadium will be open and serving breakfast food for purchase for those who did not buy a buffet ticket in advance.

Cougars Announce 2014-15 Ozzie’s Scholars

Winners and their families to be recognized at July 19 game

The Kane County Cougars have designated a total of eight Chicagoland youth as “Ozzie’s Scholars” for the 2014-2015 school year. The Cougars’ reading scholarship program encouraged current and former members of Ozzie’s Reading Club to submit a brief essay explaining how their love for reading was furthered through the Cougars’ reading incentive program.

Since the program’s inception 20 years ago, more than 2 million Chicagoland youth have participated in Ozzie’s Reading Club, which tracks the progress of a students’ reading around the bases of a baseball diamond. Each participating teacher may determine his or her own reading requirements. Students completing the program’s requirements “hit a home run” and earn a free ticket to a Cougars game designated by their school, along with a pre-game parade, Cougars drawstring bag and food voucher.

The following winners have been awarded a scholarship to be used for educational purposes from Ozzie’s Outreach Foundation, the charitable arm of the Cougars organization.

Scrappers Announce the Return of Reading Club Program

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are pleased to announce the return of the Reading Club presented by Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU) and ComDoc. The Reading Club is implemented within schools and libraries from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Stark, Portage, Mercer (PA) and Lawrence (PA) counties. The goal of this program is to promote the importance of literacy and education while at the same time fostering a life-long love of reading. It’s a completely free program that provides teachers with rewards for students who reach their reading goal. Students that complete the goal set by their teacher receives two FREE tickets to one the designated Reading Club game dates.

Schools and classrooms can sign up for the program by contacting Kate Walsh with the Scrappers at 330-505-0000 or by emailing kwalsh@mvscrappers.com.

Parents, if your child is not participating in the reading club in his/her school; you can sign them up as individuals. You can sign them up by returning an enrollment form and then tracking your child’s reading with the Reading Club bookmark. Cutters Looking for Local Military Heroes

For the second year in a row, the Williamsport Crosscutters are partnering with Williamsport Mason’s Lodge #106, & Webb Weekly to salute local heroes on Military Appreciation Night, July 3 at Susquehanna Bank Park when the Cutters host the Auburn Doubledays at 7:05pm.

As part of the night, the first 1,000 fans will receive a 20-card set featuring local Military Heroes courtesy of MasonicTemple Assocation of Williamsport, & Webb Weekly.

“We had such a great response to this last year, that it just made sense to do it again in 2015 and honor more of our local heroes,” stated Gabe Sinicropi, the Cutters Vice-President of Marketing and Public Relations.

Fans are asked to nominate local Military Heroes for possible inclusion in the card set. Nominees can be an active or retired member of any branch of the service.

Nomination forms will be printed in Webb Weekly on March 18 and 25 as well the April 1 and 8 editions. Forms can also be downloaded by visiting crosscutters.com or picked up at the Crosscutters offices at Susquehanna Bank Park.

Those who are included in the card set will be invited to the July 3 game, honored on the field and presented with their own 8″x10″ copy of their card. Those who are deceased will be represented by their family.

The deadline for nominations is April 24. All nomination forms must be accompanied by a photo. Electronic photos are preferred but not required. All photographs will be returned.

Kraras Named Ceremonial Flag Service Honoree for Opening Night

Local business leader and World War II veteran Gust “Gus” Kraras will be honored April 17th on Fightins Opening Night as part of the Savage61 Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Ceremonial Flag Service Honoree. Kraras’ celebration on Opening Night kicks off the Ceremonial Flag Service for the 2015 season.

In 1950, FirstEnergy Stadium was built as a memorial to the veterans of our community. To bring even more attention to this, a ceremonial flag flies in front of America’s Classic Ballpark at each home game to honor one specific veteran. For the 2015 season, living World War II veterans, in addition do any veterans that have passed, may be honored with the Ceremonial Flag Service. The addition of living World War II honorees is new for 2015 , and on Opening Night, Gus Kraras will become the first of what the Fightins hope will be many World War II veterans to be honored at the ballpark this season.

“The ceremonial flag honoring a veteran became an important, and emotional part of the Fightins game presentation in 2014”, said Fightins General Manager Scott Hunsicker. “In 2015, we really want to engage the families of World War II veterans, and honor these brave men and women. When discussing what World War II veteran should be the first to be honored on Opening Night, we immediately thought of Gust Kraras. He’s a great man. His dedication and contributions to our country and our community are incredible. Plus, he actually sold hot dogs here at the ballpark when it first opened in 1951! We are so excited to honor Gust Kraras on Opening Night, and we invite all the families of World War II Veterans to please contact us so we can honor your loved one as well.”

Born in 1921, Kraras immigrated to the United States in 1938 from Greece when he was just 17 years old. He was living in Nashville during the Pearl Harbor attacks, and a day later, he decided to volunteer into the United States, but wasn’t able to since he wasn’t yet a citizen. He overcame this issue by requesting his draft board to advance his draft number and shortly thereafter, was in the Army and assigned to the Field Artillery.

In 1943, Kraras asked to be transferred to the newly-formed Greek Battalion at Camp Carson, Colorado. Nearly 300 volunteered to be sent on a special mission to occupied Greece and from that, only 173 men and 10 officers were sent. That group was part of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which later evolved into what we now know as the CIA.

Following their extensive training, Kraras and the rest of the Greek Battalion was sent to Cairo, Egypt. On their second day, his group was picked as one of the two that received paratrooper training. Because of Army regulations at the time, Kraras and his party had to volunteer to become paratroopers. The next day, the selected troops went to the then-Palestine to attend British Paratrooper School. In the U.S. Army Paratrooper Schools, training typically lasted 90 days. Kraras training at the British Paratrooper School lasted just three days and five jumps.

Now in Greece, Kraras’ platoon’s missions were all very similar. They would be responsible for blocking highways and waiting for German convoys. Once they would find a convoy, they would dismantle the first and last truck using bazookas and then take on the convoy with everything they had. They would then take off up through the mountains and hide as Germans would attempt to find them-they never did.

Kraras was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945 and he took up residence in Reading where his brother John lived with his family. He went into business with his brother and later, opened up several restaurants in the Reading area and in Wildwood, New Jersey. The Kraras family went on to own and operate numerous restaurants and hotels in the seaside town for over five decades.

He met his wife Stella Dialectos upon returning from the war and married in 1946. They had three children: Chris Kraras, Angel Kraras Cammarano, and Patricia Kraras Donahue. Gus is still involved actively in his business ventures and church community in the Reading and Wildwood areas.

The World War II veterans will be honored, in addition to fallen veterans of all wars, nightly during a pre-game ceremony beside their family and friends. Before each home game, the Fightins raised a ceremonial flag to tribute to their memory and welcomed their family to the game. The flag will then lowered and given to the family following the game. During the ceremony, the Fightins will tell each veteran’s story and present the veteran with a Ceremonial Flag as a token of appreciation for all that they have done in protection of the United States of America.

Reservations for the Savage61 Ceremonial Flag Service are now being taken for the 2015 season. Those interested can call 610-370-BALL ext. 293 to reserve a date. Anyone interested in paying tribute or honor to a veteran is asked to call that number with their preference of a game date. Available game dates are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Fightins will kick off the 65th season of baseball at America’s Classic Ballpark on Friday, April 17th when they host the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the 2014 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the 2015 season can be purchased online at Fightins.com, by phone at 610-370-BALL, or by visiting the FirstEnergy Stadium Ticket Office.

Event, with BlueClaws players, returns to Sea Girt Lanes

BlueClaws Charities is proud to announce its fifth annual Bowling With The BlueClaws fundraising event returns to Sea Girt Lanes on Wednesday, April 15th. BlueClaws players will again be at the event, a great chance for kids to have a fun night out with players and Buster while raising money for a worthy cause.

The charitable bowling event takes place from 6-8pm. For just $12, participants will receive bowling shoes, a raffle ticket for a series of prizes, pizza and soda, and unlimited bowling games.

Raffles will be held throughout the night for limited edition autographed merchandise and other door prizes. In addition to prizes being given out, BlueClaws players will be there to hang out with you! All proceeds from the night will benefit BlueClaws Charities and their Community Partners.

OKC Dodgers Announce Faith Night

Featuring pregame concert by Hawk Nelson on July 19

The Oklahoma City Dodgers will host the team’s first Faith Night on Sunday, July 19, the team announced today.

Popular Christian rock band Hawk Nelson will perform a pregame concert in the right field parking lot adjacent to Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark from 4-5 p.m. Following the concert, the OKC Dodgers will take on the Round Rock Express at 6:05 p.m.

Tickets packages for groups of 10 or more are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling (405) 218-2100. For just $15, fans will receive tickets to both the Hawk Nelson concert and the OKC Dodgers game, as well as an OKC Dodgers hat. At this time individual ticket packages are not available, nor are tickets for the concert only.

Since forming in 2003, Hawk Nelson has produced eight studio albums, with a ninth set to be released soon. The band has had 12 singles reach the top 20 on the contemporary hit radio charts, including three number-one hit songs. Their music has been featured by Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and NBC Sports.

“Hawk Nelson is a nationally-recognized name, and we’re excited they will be performing here,” said OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes. “Faith Night fits in well with the rest of our promotional schedule, and the concert will be a perfect complement to another great night of Oklahoma City Dodgers baseball.”

Drew Weber to receive Community Spirit Award

Owner to be honored by Kiwanis Club of Greater Lowell

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Lowell would like to announce the 2015 recipient of the Thomas G Kelakos Community Spirit Award. Tom was a man who will always be remembered for his wisdom, his compassion, and his quiet generosity. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Lowell for almost 50 years, and had a perfect attendance record, meeting weekly. He owned and operated the LOMEDCO Company here in Lowell for many years, and made it a priority to give back to his community. He was a true gentleman and always had a warm smile and a word of encouragement for you, whenever you saw him. So often he helped out at many charities throughout the years with Kiwanis being one of his favorites. And yet he did so quietly. A lot of what Tom did was done anonymously because that was his way. It is because of Tom and his ways that the Kiwanis Club introduced the Thomas G. Kelakos Community Spirit Award, in his honor, after he passed away. One of our most revered members; he is fondly remembered and dearly missed by our membership.

This year, Drew Weber will receive the 2015 Thomas G. Kelakos Community Spirit Award at the annual dinner to be held Friday, April 10 at Lenzi’s in Dracut. ‘Lather Up, Then ‘Batter Up’ with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada (CCCN) & The 51s

The Las Vegas 51^sprofessional baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets and the 2013 & 2014 Pacific Conference Southern Division Champions, announced today they have teamed up with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada (CCCN) to offer complimentary sunscreen at Cashman Field during the 2015 baseball season. The sunscreen will be available beginning with the Big League Weekend “day game” between the Chicago Cubs vs. Oakland A’s on Saturday, March 14 at 12:05 p.m. CCCN medical oncologist Dr. Paul Michael will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the game.

Fans will be able to protect themselves from potentially harmful UV-A and UV-B rays by visiting one of two CCCN sunscreen kiosks on the main concourse at the ballpark. Additionally, skin-safety messages will be displayed on the videoboard and public address announcements will remind guests to stay proactive with skin protection. Cashman Field ushers will also have a supply of complimentary sunscreen available for fans, so they may conveniently reapply during the game.

“Awareness as well as a preventative approach are critical in preventing skin damage and potentially skin cancer,” said James Kilber, executive director of CCCN. “So many of our local families enjoy a trip out to Cashman Field each year. We hope everyone will take advantage of the free sunscreen and skin safety messages this season as they cheer on the 51^sto victory.”

The partnership offers complimentary SPF 30 sunscreen to the projected 300,000 plus fans that will visit Cashman Field throughout the summer. The 51^shave 11 day games scheduled at Cashman Field during its 2015 season.

“We are excited with the partnership with CCCN and it will provide the fans at the ballpark an opportunity to apply sunscreen during the matinee games at Cashman Field,” 51^sPresident/COO Don Logan said. “The awareness of skin cancer is very important and with the help of CCCN, it will provide a safer experience for both the players and fans this season.”

Scholarship Applications Now Available

Foundation to award $30,000 in scholarships to N.H., Mass. students

The 2014 class of Fisher Cats Foundation Scholarship Winners.

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Fisher Cats Foundation have announced the application process is now open for the 2015 Fisher Cats Foundation Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The Foundation will award 12 scholarships to outstanding scholar-athletes from New Hampshire and Massachusetts who demonstrate academic excellence, significant athletic achievement, and active civic involvement. Each award is $2,500 and includes recognition at a Fisher Cats game during the 2015 season.

Applications are available simply by visiting the Fisher Cats’ website, www.nhfishercats.com, and clicking the heading COMMUNITY. Students can also find the application by clicking SCHOLARSHIP REGISTRATION at www.NHScholars.org.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on April 30, 2015. A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s coach, FAFSA documentation, and the student’s high school transcript in an electronic format must be uploaded with the application. All applicants will be evaluated on academic performance, athletic achievement, and citizenship.

Candidates for the Fisher Cats Foundation Scholar-Athlete Scholarships must be residents of New Hampshire or Massachusetts who are graduating from high school in 2015. Candidates must be planning to enroll in a four-year degree program or planning to attend a local community college or technical school in the fall. Candidates do not need to be studying in any particular field.

Three of the scholarships have additional significance. The Chris Carpenter Award is named after New Hampshire native and National League Cy Young Award-winning pitcher, Chris Carpenter. The Swymer Family Scholarship is presented annually to a student who has overcome a barrier on the way to attending college. The Easter Seals Veterans Count Scholarship goes to a student whose parent or guardian is an active, reserve, or veteran member of the United States military.

In 2015, the Fisher Cats Foundation will award a total of $30,000 in scholarships with $5,000 of that amount earmarked to a pair of scholarships for Massachusetts students. Through 2014, the Fisher Cats have presented $230,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors since 2007.

Donations Secure Loved One’s Name on Special Aug. 22 Jerseys

An annual tradition takes a twist. In 2015, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders’ (Triple-A/New York Yankees) Breast Cancer Awareness Game will sport special pink jerseys. And this year, fans can champion the fight or memory of a loved one by placing their names on the jerseys themselves.

With a $20 donation to Susan G. Komen® NEPA, a loved one’s name will appear as part of a pinstripe on the RailRiders’ Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys. The jerseys will be autographed and auctioned off to the highest bidder that same night, Aug. 22. Submissions for donations and names are due by Friday, May 29.

The night features a number of other activities in recognition of the cause. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a replica pink RailRiders jersey courtesy of PNC Bank. There will be a raffle for a RailRiders’ team-signed pink bat. Breast cancer survivors will receive complimentary tickets and everyone is encouraged to participate in a PNC Field Pink-Out by wearing pink to support the cause.

Entries for names should be sent to the RailRiders’ offices: 235 Montage Mountain Rd., Moosic, PA 18507. Cash or check will be accepted as payment for the $20 donation. Checks should be made payable to: Susan G. Komen® NEPA. Payment must be received before a name is printed. Entrants should include the first and last name to appear on the jersey.
