M-Braves, JSU partnering to salute the Negro Leagues on Saturday

*JACKSON, MS *– Jackson State University is partnering with the Mississippi Braves for their family and friends night at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Trustmark Park. The first-time collaboration will also honor the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues.

“We are very excited that we are finally in a place where we can see this project to fruition. We’ve been working on it since 2020,” said Yolanda Owens, assistant vice president for the Division of Institutional Advancement at JSU. “The pandemic paused our plans, but we are excited that in 2022 we can bring this partnership together.”

Although The Negro League’s 100th anniversary was in 2020, and initial plans stalled, the fun and festivities will go down on Saturday as the Mississippi Braves take on the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

During the game, several tributes will be made in memory of the league established for Black baseball teams in the early 20th century. A silent auction will also be held, and all proceeds will go to JSU’s GAP program.

“There’s going to be a number of historical videos, script material, and a variety of things talking about the history of the Negro Leagues. We probably have more of a focus on Cool Papa Bell, who had Mississippi ties, and [we’re] just celebrating the history, nostalgia, and importance of the Negro Leagues,” explained Tim Mueller, assistant general manager of the Mississippi Braves.

Mueller says the partnership between the Braves and JSU is long overdue, calling the university an icon and fixture of Mississippi and the capital city.

“Kelvin Moore, who is now deceased, was the first player from Jackson State actually to be drafted into Major League Baseball, so this is a great opportunity for us to honor him and some of our other MLB greats and honor those who paved the way for us through the major leagues,” added Owens.

Former Minority Mississippi Braves player Vaughn Grissom and Minority Mississippi Braves player Justyn-Henry Malloy are proud of the team’s efforts to recognize the Negro League, noting its contributions to their opportunity to play professional baseball.

“I wouldn’t be able to play our sport now without the people who took the first step. The league is being flooded with more African-American talent, and it’s fun to see,” said Grissom, who played infielder for the Braves at the time of this interview.

“Even 10-to-15 years ago, the league was predominately white, and now you get to see a lot more color. We have an opportunity to make tons of money now [and] that wasn’t available back then, even if you were the best of the best.”

Malloy, drafted by the Braves in 2021, plays left field for the M-Braves. He admires the passion the players of the Negro Leagues had for the game.

“Knowing the history of what those guys have done before us and the amount of struggling they really had to go through too, it kind of put things in perspective with us playing such a difficult game,” Henry shared. “Those guys were super tough. They were hungry; they really loved the game for them to do what they had to do to play out here, so I think it’s important for us to know and recognize that.”

Keeping true to the Mississippi Braves tradition, a post-game fireworks show will follow the game. Tickets can be purchased from the Trustmark Park box office or in-person at the Department of Alumni and Constituency Relations located at 101 W. Capitol Street in downtown Jackson.

Editor’s note: Shortly after this interview, Grissom was promoted to Atlanta on Wednesday, August 10. Grissom started that evening for the Braves at second base, and during his third plate appearance at historic Fenway Park, he hit a home run over the monster for his first hit as a Major Leaguer.

Dodgers “Pack the Park Pink;” Lose Sixth Straight Game

Friday, Aug. 12, 2022 – Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark – Oklahoma City, Okla.

Game Summary: The Round Rock Express scored seven straight runs as they sent the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a 7-3 loss Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. The Dodgers took the first lead of the game as Drew Avans led off with his 10th triple of the season and scored on a RBI groundout by Edwin Ríos in the first inning. Round Rock (59-50) took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring runs on a RBI ground-rule double by Josh Sale and a RBI double by Nick Tanielu. The Express added three more runs in the fifth inning with a RBI double by Andy Ibáñez and a two-run homer by Davis Wendzel for a 5-1 advantage. Wendzel hit his second home run of the night in the eighth inning, boosting the Express to a 7-1 lead with another two-run shot. In the bottom of the ninth inning, four straight Dodgers reached base with two outs, including a two-run single by Omar Estévez, but the Dodgers (62-47) fell to 0-4 in the series.

Of Note:

-The Dodgers have now lost six consecutive games for their longest losing streak of the season and have lost six games in a row for the first time since Aug. 20-26, 2019. They are 1-7 in the last eight games overall and have lost the first four games of their six-game series against the Express for their first 0-4 start to a series since May 6-9, 2021 in Round Rock.

-Drew Avans hit his PCL-leading 10th triple of the season in the first inning, which tied the OKC team record for triples in a season during the Bricktown era (since 1998), matching Joaquin Arias’ 10 triples during the 2006 season. Avans went 2-for-5 and scored a run as he extended his on-base streak to 48 games. He owns the longest active on-base streak in the Minors and the longest on-base streak by an OKC player during the MLBAM era (since 2005). He has reached base in 62 of his last 63 games and his 48-game on-base streak is the longest in the PCL since 2018.

-Edwin Ríos extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 1-for-4 with a RBI and a walk as he continued his Major League Rehab Assignment. During the nine-game streak he is 12-for-37 with four doubles and owns the longest active hitting streak by an OKC player. He was initially placed on the Los Angeles Dodgers Injured List June 3 with a right hamstring injury and was transferred to the 60-day IL June 22.

-Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Blake Treinen and Brusdar Graterol opened Major League Rehab Assignments Friday with OKC. Treinen pitched a scoreless sixth inning with a strikeout, flyout and groundout, throwing nine pitches (seven strikes). Graterol pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a walk, double play and strikeout, throwing 14 pitches (eight strikes). Treinen was placed on the LAD Injured List April 22 due to right shoulder inflammation and was transferred to the 60-day IL May 17. Graterol was placed on the LAD Injured List with right shoulder inflammation July 11.

-Over the last six losses, the Dodgers have allowed 48 runs, including seven or more runs four times. During the same span, the Dodgers have scored 16 runs, with three runs or fewer in five of the six games.

-The OKC Dodgers took the field in special edition pink jerseys to “Pack the Park Pink” with MidFirst Bank and promote breast cancer awareness. The game-worn jerseys were auctioned to benefit Susan G. Komen Oklahoma.

What’s Next: The series between the Dodgers and Express continues at 6:05 p.m. Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Faith and Family Night. The evening includes a postgame concert by Tauren Wells, presented by Scott Dawson Evangelistic Association and Hobby Lobby. Woodpeckers to host Alzheimer's Awareness Night at Segra Stadium

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – AUGUST 3, 2022 – The Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Chapter is teaming up with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers for Paint the Park Purple — Alzheimer’s Awareness Night on Friday, August 12 at Segra Stadium.

Proceeds from Paint the Park Purple will support the Association’s 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Fayetteville taking place on October 29 —to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

The game against the Down East Wood Ducks begins at 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. The game will conclude with fireworks. Fans are encouraged to wear purple and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will take home a custom purple hat sponsored by Edward Jones Cumberland County featuring the Woodpeckers signature logo.

The Woodpeckers will take the field wearing purple jerseys in honor of all who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. A jersey auction will take place both in-game and online with the proceeds benefiting the Fayetteville Walk.

M-Braves to host JMS Burn & Reconstructive Center Night on Thursday, August 4th

PEARL, MS – The Mississippi Braves, in partnership with Merit Health’s JMS Burn and Reconstructive Center and the Burn Foundation of America, will host a special game on Thursday, August 4th at 6:35 pm against the Biloxi Shuckers at Trustmark Park.

Burn survivors from across the state of Mississippi will be recognized pre-game, and M-Braves players and coaches will be wearing special jerseys designed by OT Sports, with a unique design based on the Burn Foundation of America’s “Flame and Water” logo. These jerseys will be available to fans via silent auction during the game, with proceeds benefitting the Burn Foundation of America.

Spikes fans raised $9,265, the most-ever for a Paint the Park Pink Night, through the Jersey-off-the-Back Auction and 50/50 Drawing on Saturday to benefit the Mount Nittany Health Foundation.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A crowd of 5,313 fans, the largest of the season for the State College Spikes at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, cheered on the Spikes on Saturday night as they took a 6-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and raised the most funds in a single Paint the Park Pink Night presented by Mount Nittany Health.

Fans responded in full force to join the fight against breast cancer as together, they raised $9,265 in bidding on the Spikes’ special Pink and Black Jerseys to benefit the Mount Nittany Foundation and the work done by the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Health, as well as through the 50/50 Drawing at the ballpark.

The night was capped by the second straight night of FIREWORKS from the Field, as fans were invited onto the ballpark infield to see another spectacular lighting up the skies thanks to Mount Nittany Health. Three more shows remain on the 2022 schedule, with College Township presenting the action on Saturday, August 20, McClure Company presenting the show on Saturday, August 27, and Starfire Corporation presenting the show at the season finale on Sunday, September 4.

Saturday night’s crowd, many of whom were decked out in pink themselves to show their support for the fight, helped generate the Spikes’ (5-4 2nd half) late surge to take their third straight win. Ryan Chesney and DeAndre Shelton each took bases-loaded walks to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning, with Trent Taylor’s infield single bolstering the lead to three.

State College bounced back from going down 2-0 in the third on Dom Bucko’s RBI single and an error to plate a run in the fourth. Brody Perkes beat out an infield single to start the inning, then stole second and advanced a base on back-to-back flyouts, the last a Colin Adams sacrifice fly to score the run.

In the fifth, Nick Gile drove in his eighth run, the most for the Spikes in the second half, with a single to center field to score Shelton. A passed ball then brought in Taylor to give State College the lead.

In the eighth, Mahoning Valley (3-6 2nd half) tied the game on Adam Fogel’s RBI double before the power of pink drove the Spikes’ late flurry.

Spikes reliever Tristen Hudson (1-0) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings to close the game. Hudson, who recorded the final out for North Greenville in the NCAA Division II national championship game this June, gave up just one hit and recorded one strikeout to net his first MLB Draft League win.

Scrappers reliever Brenton Thomas (0-1) took the loss after being charged with all three of the Spikes’ eighth-inning runs in 1/3 of an inning on the mound. Thomas yielded one hit and four walks.

The Spikes and Scrappers are set to finish their four-game series at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, with State College looking for the sweep in the 4:05 p.m. contest. Right-hander Beau Nichols (0-1) will get the start for the Spikes, while right-hander Jarod Sprinkle (0-0) gets the ball for Mahoning Valley.

Sunday’s fun is headlined by Still Strong Night, featuring a special appearance from foundation co-founder, former NFL defensive lineman and proud Blue & White alum Devon Still. In addition to Still throwing out a first pitch and being part of the night’s activities, proceeds from the Spikes’ 50/50 drawing for the night will go to the Still Strong Foundation, and fans will have many ways to find out how to support the foundation and its cause.

It’s also a a Sunday Funday presented by Bigfoot Country Classics, with a Pre-Game Catch on the Field from 3:00-3:30 p.m., half-price hard seltzers from 3:00-5:00 p.m_.,_ and Kids Eat Free as the first 250 kids get a voucher good for a free hot dog, chips and soda.

Bats to Hold Canned Good Drive and Jersey Auction for Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville Bats announced that they will be holding a bottled water/canned good drive at their Sunday, July 31 game at 1:05 p.m. against the Columbus Clippers. In addition, the team announced it will hold an online auction for a signed Jack Harlow Bats jersey. All proceeds will benefit the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund.

Fans are encouraged to drop off bottled water and/or canned goods at the July 31 game. Donation bins will be in the Hall of Fame pavilion located inside the west entrance to Louisville Slugger Field. In exchange for a donation, fans will receive a coupon valid for a 20 percent discount in the Bats Team Store.

The team will also auction a jersey signed by music superstar and Louisville-native Jack Harlow. Fans can bid on the jersey on the Bats website (www.batsbaseball.com) beginning Sunday night (July 31) and bidding will continue for a full week.

All proceeds will benefit the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund. Established by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear following the floods and severe weather system of the past week, the fund will support those impacted by flooding in the eastern part of Kentucky. Deaf Awareness Night Returns to Pelicans Ballpark

The night, which is presented by Young Talkers, marks the 4th annual event for the team

August 12th will mark the return of Deaf Awareness Night to Pelicans Ballpark presented by Young Talkers. To increase awareness and raise funds for the deaf community, the Pelicans will wear specially-designed jerseys, courtesy of Young Talkers, that replace the traditional Myrtle Beach script with American Sign Language (ASL). The back of the jersey will also feature the “I Love You” sign in ASL, a strong symbol within the deaf community. The club will auction off the commemorative jerseys with proceeds benefiting the Pelicans Organization for the Deaf.

In an effort to create an inclusive experience for members of the deaf community, sign language interpreters will be infused into the Pelicans’ game day experience. Interpreters have been assigned to special sections within Pelicans Ballpark for the evening. Woodpeckers Launch First Ability Inclusive Themed Game

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville Woodpeckers, in partnership with ServiceSource, Miller’s Crew, Bravery Kids Gym and the Vision Resource Center, will host its first-ever “Ability Awareness Day” at Segra Stadium. “Ability Awareness Day” will take place during the Woodpeckers game on Sunday, August 14th at 2:05 pm vs the Down East Wood Ducks. The goal of the initiative is to promote inclusion and celebrate the abilities of all people within Fayetteville and Cumberland County.

The day will kick off with a free baseball skills clinic for Special Olympics Cumberland County athletes. Prior to the first pitch, the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Buddy Sports baseball team will take the field with the Woodpeckers for starting lineups and the national anthem. Throughout the game, the Woodpeckers will hold a Houston Astros autographed baseball auction, with all proceeds benefitting ServiceSource, Miller’s Crew, Bravery Kids Gym and the Vision Resource Center. In addition, fans can purchase food at the Miller’s Crew food truck outside the front gates.

The Woodpeckers will transform a room inside the stadium into a sensory friendly space for those who may feel overwhelmed by the crowd, noise or other factors. Sensory friendly stations provided by Bravery Kids Gym will be set up around the concourse. Mississippi Braves to honor civil rights icons The “Tougaloo Nine” on Saturday, July 16

PEARL, MS – In conjunction with Minor League Baseball’s initiative “The Nine”, on Saturday, July 16, when the Mississippi Braves take on the Rocket City Trash Pandas at Trustmark Park, the team will be honoring the brave students that made up the historic Tougaloo Nine.

“The M-Braves look forward to recognizing the courageous members of the Tougaloo Nine on this night”, said M-Braves vice-president and general manager Pete Laven. “Their story is vital to the fight for civil rights history in not just our great state but the entire nation. We are honored and humbled that several of the Tougaloo Nine will be present for the game.”

Story of the Tougaloo Nine:

In March 1961, the Tougaloo Nine became the first Mississippi students to stage a sit-in against segregation when they staged a demonstration at the main public library in Jackson. Just over a year earlier, on February 1, 1960, students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College launched the sit-in movement with a protest at a Greensboro lunch counter. Students from black colleges across the South followed suit at a variety of public places—lunch counters, libraries, and department stores—that denied service to blacks.

On March 27, 1961, nine members of the Jackson Youth Council of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People—Meredith Coleman Anding Jr., James Cleo Bradford, Alfred Lee Cook, Geraldine Edwards, Janice Jackson, Joseph Jackson Jr., Albert Earl Lassiter, Evelyn Pierce, and Ethel Sawyer—entered Jackson’s main library and began browsing through the card catalog and then sat down to read. When police arrived and asked the students to leave, they refused and were arrested on charges of breach of the peace. Medgar Evers gathered bail for their release, and Jack Harvey Young Sr., a civil rights lawyer, represented the students. They were ultimately convicted, fined one hundred dollars each, and given thirty days in jail, though that part of the sentence was suspended. However, their actions led to the integration of what is now the Jackson Metropolitan Library System, and they have been honored by the college and by the City of Jackson.

On July 16, Mississippi Braves players will wear vintage Tougaloo College baseball jerseys from the 1960s that feature the last name of one of the Tougaloo Nine students on the back.

“Tougaloo College is honored to be a part of this special occasion as the Mississippi Braves pay tribute to the Tougaloo Nine,” said Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Social Justice, Dr. Daphne Chamberlain. Tougaloo College has a rich civil rights history that has been well documented, and the Tougaloo Nine are a significant part of that history. More than sixty years ago, these young people challenged the status quo in their actions to integrate the Jackson Public Library. The Tougaloo Nine inspired and empowered young people across Mississippi to join the fight for freedom. The role the Tougaloo Nine played in effectuating positive social change in Mississippi during one of the most turbulent periods in this state and this nation’s history is a testament to their bravery and commitment to securing human dignity for all people.”

BRYAN CRANSTON, AARON PAUL TO HOST “BREAKING BAD” MEMORABILIA SILENT AUCTION FOR CHARITY JULY 30 AT ISOTOPES PARK 

The Albuquerque Isotopes today announced “Breaking Bad” stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will host a silent auction Saturday, July 30 at Isotopes Park. The Emmy-winning actors are also scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during that evening’s game.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit two local charities:

New Mexico Veterans Integration Centers**:** A resource for Veterans and their families in New Mexico, the VIC provides many services, including multiple housing assistance options, peer support, food and nutrition, and case management services to Veterans, their families, and the community.

Children’s Cancer Fund of New Mexico: From the moment a New Mexico child is diagnosed with cancer, the CCFNM is there to help. Generous donations directly support these children and their families in the following manner: Assistance for transportation costs, food vouchers, prizes for children and teens to help minimize the trauma of painful procedures, scholarship assistance and much more.

All silent auction items will be donated from the personal collections of both Cranston and Paul, who starred in the hit television series from 2008-2013. The auction—which will be held exclusively at Isotopes Park—will begin when the gates open at 5:30 pm and will last through the fifth inning. The specific auction items will be announced in the coming weeks. The auction winners will be invited to attend a private photo op with both Cranston and Paul during that night’s game.

“Albuquerque was our creative home throughout the run of Breaking Bad, and will always have a warm place in my heart,” Cranston said. “Now, Aaron and I thought we can do something to say thank you in the best way possible, by raising money for two very important charities that serve the ABQ community, while also having fun at the ballpark.”

NILES, OH –The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (est. 1999) and Youngstown Air Reserve Station (est. 1955), home to the 910th Airlift Wing, have been pillars in the Mahoning Valley in Northeast Ohio for decades. Together, we’ve participated in ceremonies, flag salutes, fly overs, and more. With significant growth by both parties, the opportunity to rally the region even more has never been better.

Together, we are thrilled to announce the Mahoning Valley Scrappers Baseball Team is teaming with the 910th Airlift Wing for a Community Engagement Partnership campaign called “Operation Fly Together” beginning with the 2022 baseball season with the Warren Area Chamber of Commerce Education, Civic & Cultural Foundation as the primary sponsor.

With unique and creative marketing elements, this campaign is designed to celebrate the venerable C-130 Hercules tactical cargo aircraft and bring increased awareness to the local presence of 910th Airlift Wing and YARS in Northeast Ohio. This campaign will also bring together currently serving Reserve Citizen Airmen, civilians, and thousands of veterans within 50 miles of the base.

Since the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are leaders in fun, and experts at creating unique moments at the stadium and in the community, their team has created new specialty marketing components include a new logo, patch, flag, educational markers, caps and jersey that are unique to the ‘Operation Fly Together’ campaign.

Elements of this new Partnership will fall under five categories — Support, Honor, Educate, Celebrate and Community. Here are some details of each category of this new Partnership:

Support – To celebrate the C-130 Hercules and the ‘Operation Fly Together’ campaign in Mahoning Valley, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will host “The 910th Airlift Wing ‘Operation Fly Together’ Night” in conjunction with the Scrappers game on Saturday, August 6, 2022. To support this exciting partnership, a new patch and logo have been created. This patch and logo will be used on the sleeve of a specialty jersey created specifically for the partnership of the 910th Airlift Wing and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers celebrating ‘Operation Fly Together.’ A new team cap featuring a “Winger” logo, inspired by the YARS Mascot Winger, has been created and players will wear these caps at the game. Honor – To honor the men and women assigned to Youngstown ARS and living throughout the surrounding greater Mahoning Valley area. A new ‘Operation Fly Together’ flag will be featured at Eastwood Field in honor of the campaign on ‘Military Appreciation Nights’ and “The 910th Airlift Wing ‘Operation Fly Together’ Night.” The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are continuing their ‘Military Appreciation Nights’. This weekly promotion has occurred at Eastwood Field for at least 15 seasons and will continue to occur during the 2022 season. Every Wednesday, military members can receive 2 free tickets to the Scrappers game. Military branches are recognized and featured on these days. Additionally, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will host “The 910th Airlift Wing ‘Operation Fly Together’ Night” on August 6, 2022. During the game, the Scrappers will wear the specialty jerseys and caps; there will be in game/online auction of the game-worn specialty jerseys and caps; the 910th will have table displays at the game; the 910th’s Winger mascot will be in attendance and the members of the 910th Airlift Wing will participate in pre-game and in-game activities such as singing the National Anthem, ceremonial first pitches, pre-game ceremonies on field prior to the game, promotional videos during the game, kids activities, the 7th inning stretch and more.

Educate – To bring awareness about the C-130 Hercules and its history. The following items are being developed to accomplish this goal: C-130 Hercules educational marker signs throughout the concourse; C-130/Winger coloring sheets in Kids Fun Zone and a Winger marker in the Fun Zone.

Celebrate – To bring awareness in a fun and positive way with the general public. The following events and items are being developed to accomplish this goal: Kids meet and greet with Winger and 910th Airlift Wing members as well as special ticket and merchandise packages available for fans.

Community – To rally the community and bring positive awareness about the positioning of Youngstown Air Reserve Station in the community. In addition to the joint press event kicking off this Partnership, the following events are being planned to accomplish this goal: Mahoning Valley Scrappers Players visit to YARS and a Baseball clinic for 910th Airlift Wing Families.
