Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team To Play At Centennial Field August 1st

BURLINGTON, VT – Historic Centennial Field will once again play host to a truly magical event as the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team will play an exhibition against Vermont-based celebrities August 1st, 2015. Made up of Veterans and Active-Duty Soldiers and Marines who have lost a limb(s) in post 9/11 combat, the WWAST tours the country in hopes of raising awareness of the sacrifices of braves soldiers and to show that through extensive training and rehabilitation, that these Soldiers, and others like them, that life without a limb is limitless.

The August 1st event will include an exhibition game with former Major League Pitchers Bill “Spaceman” Lee and Len Whitehouse. Actor, producer, and writer Rusty “The Logger” Dewees, country music star Jamie Lee Thurston, and Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger are also among those scheduled to appear. This has been made possible through support from the Four Aces Family Foundation.

Game time is 6:05 PM with gates opening at Centennial Field at 5:00 PM. All tickets are $5 and will be available at select Jolley locations and at the Vermont Lake Monsters ticket office or by calling (802) 655-6611, starting July 6th. All ticket proceeds will benefit the mission of the WWAST, as well as to the creation of an annual WWAST Kids Camp for children amputees.

Fans to literally Paint the Park Pink on Aug. 2

The State College Spikes’ annual Paint the Park Pink event, presented by Mount Nittany Health, will take on a whole new dimension in 2015. Fans will be offered the opportunity to literally “Paint the Park Pink” to help the fight against breast cancer on Sunday, August 2 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

For the first time, fans that make a donation to the Breast Care Center at Mount Nittany Medical Center through The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center will have the chance to paint designated areas of the ballpark pink to honor those who have fought and those who continue to fight breast cancer. The event will take place during the Spikes’ 6:05 p.m. game against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox).

In addition to painting the ballpark pink, fans can bid on the special Pink Camouflage Jerseys the Spikes will be wearing to benefit The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center. The Jersey-off-the-Back Auction will take place during the night, with all winners receiving their jerseys immediately after the game.

Plus, there will numerous other ways for fans to donate to the fight against breast cancer throughout the night, including special pink balloons, a 50/50 drawing, and more.

“Paint the Park Pink has always been one of our most popular and impactful promotions throughout the past nine seasons,” said Spikes General Manager Scott Walker. “We have been privileged to be able to partner with Mount Nittany Health to raise over $60,000 for the fight against breast cancer. This year, our fans can not only continue to help that fight, but leave an indelible mark on the ballpark that will last more than just one night.”

The fun of Paint the Park Pink Night also includes a Replica Pink Camouflage Jersey Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans of all ages, presented by Mount Nittany Health, and a fantastic post-game FIREWORKS show to close the evening.

Single-game tickets for all 38 regular season home dates between June 19 and September 6, are currently on sale through the Spikes Box Office and online at StateCollegeSpikes.com. Salem Red Sox Make Record Donation to Susan G. Komen

Annual Pink in the Park weekend proceeds donated to charity

SALEM, Va. – The Salem Red Sox are pleased to announce that a record donation will be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure as a result of the extremely successful Pink in the Park Weekend.

This year, the Red Sox will be donating $4,652.27 to the non-profit organization. This amount comes from two silent auctions: Saturday night’s pink jerseys and Sunday’s pink bats. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from pink paraphernalia that was sold at the park this past weekend was included.

This year’s donation is the largest the Salem Red Sox have made in the eight-year history of the Pink in the Park series. Over the previous seven years, the Red Sox have donated $21,000 to the organization.

Rome Braves Present Check to the United Way

Rome Braves presented a check to the United Way Saturday night May ninth just prior to the game at State Mutual Stadium. The check was for the amount of $5,000.00. General Manager Michael Dunn along with Manager Randy Ingle and Coach Nestor Perez presented the check to Executive Director Rich Lampkin and 2015 Campaign Chairman Frank Pinson. “The United Way is an organization that enriches many lives in Northwest Georgia by supplementing various nonprofit groups,” says Rome General Manager Michael Dunn. “Rich Lampkin and his team are wonderful stewards of our community.”

The United Way identifies and builds on community strengths and assets, helping individuals and groups with specific community interests find ways to contribute their time and talents, support direct-service programs and community-change efforts, and advocate public policy changes. The Rome Braves are proud to support the efforts of the United Way as well as many great causes throughout the NW Georgia community.

Bisons ‘Armed Forces Night’ game on May 16 to benefit Buffalo Naval & Military Park

The Buffalo Bisons have teamed up again with the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park for the 2nd annual Armed Forces Tribute Night at Coca-Cola Field on Saturday, May 16 when the Bisons host the Toledo Mud Hens. The first pitch is at 5:05 p.m. with an elaborate pre-game ceremony starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Naval & Military Park are selling reserved seat tickets to the game for $10 with $5 of the advance-only sales being donated to the Park from the Bisons for the maintenance and preservation of the USS The Sullivans. Advance sale tickets may purchased on-line at www.buffalonavalpark.org or by calling (716) 847-1773 (ext. 18 or 10).

The USS The Sullivans, a Fletcher-class destroyer, was named after the Sullivan family lost five brothers (George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert) ages 20-27 onboard the USS Juneau which was sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1942 during World War II. The USS The Sullivans, the USS Little Rock, the nation’s only guided missile cruiser the submarine USS Croaker, are all docked and on display at the Naval & Military Park at Canalside.

“This is a major fund raiser for the Park and we look forward to everyone coming out to show their support for the men and women of this area who are now serving or have served in our Armed Forces. Please join us in honoring our troops,” said Deborah Billoni, chairperson of the Tribute Day committee.

LOOKING FOR A VETERANS TO HOLD THE FLAG
Among the pre-game festivities is the display of a large American flag in the outfield. Veterans at the game are invited to enter the field to hold the largest American flag to ever be on display at Coca-Cola Field. Veterans (uniforms are not necessary) are to report to the Naval & Military Park’s Command Post inside the ballpark’s Washington Street gate by 4:15 p.m. and ask for Col. Bob Pecoraro.

The 30×60-foot flag that weighs 75 pounds and flies on Buffalo’s waterfront adjacent to the Naval & Military Park, will be held by more than 100 military veterans, Sea Cadets and Civil Air Patrol members.

“We need the veterans to hold the flag in center field during the ceremony to showcase the local members of the Armed Forces so the public can say, ‘Thank You,'” said Billoni. The flag will be held during the display of colors and the singing of the Canadian and American national anthems.

Other pre-game activities include the giving away of commemorative military challenge coin to the first 2,000 fans through the Swan St. Gate (open at 4 p.m.). and the 2nd annual Francis E. Mooney Comrades Appreciation Award presentations. This year’s recipients are:

The late Helen G. Jacob, a pioneer in getting women involved with the Armed Services. She joined the U.S. Army (Women’s Auxiliary Corps) and was deployed to France as an Administrative Assistant during World War II. She had a 27-year career working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo and after retiring in 1995, she returned as a volunteer. She died on March 2nd.

The late Merrell A. Lane, who served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, was the longtime leader of a group that helped to save the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station from closing.

First Sergeant Nelson Oldfield, who served our country for 24 years in the U.S. Army, and who continues his dedication to veterans and the community through numerous volunteer activities.

Honorable Robert T. Russell, Jr., an Associate Judge for Buffalo City Court and an Acting Erie County Court Judge who created and presided over the nation’s first “Veterans’ Treatment Court.”

Captain Roger L. Woodworth, a commissioned officer with over eight years of active military service in the U.S. Army, he was appointed the first President and Chief Executive Officer and founding charter member of Veterans One-stop Center of Western New York, Inc.

Charlie Yeager was an influential local businessman who was a key member of the original organizing committee to bring the ships here in 1977. He handled the park’s insurance for over 30 years and continues to be a strong supporter of the park.

Portland, Maine– The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with the Maine Track Club and Intermed, will be hosting the 15th annual Mother’s Day 5K Road Race on Sunday, May 10th at 9:15am. Proceeds from the event will benefit Maine breast cancer patients and research with the funds being split between the Cancer Community Center and the Maine Cancer Foundation. There will also be a Kid’s Run, presented by Maine Running, beginning at 8:30am that is free of charge.

The Portland Sea Dogs Mother’s Day 5K is the largest 5K road race in the State of Maine. It is also the second largest road race in the state, only the Beach to Beacon is larger. A capped field of 3,000 runners is once again expected for this year’s race.

In the previous 14 years of the event, the Sea Dogs have been able to donate over $189,507.00 to support breast cancer research and patients in Maine including $20,000.00 from last year’s race.

All bags entering Hadlock Field will be inspected. The Sea Dogs highly recommend that people leave their bags at home or in the car. The Sea Dogs appreciate your patience and understanding.

Slugger and his Mom lead the way on the flat 5K course which begins in front of the Portland Expo building, travels down Congress Street, turning down Stevens Avenue, and making a right onto Brighton Avenue back down Deering Avenue into Fitzpatrick Stadium. The race culminates with a unique finish inside Hadlock Field in front of the third base dugout. The course is USAT&F certified and is part of the USAT&F Sanctioned Grand Prix series.

The top overall male and female finishers will receive a trophy, a pair of 2015 Season Tickets for the remainder of the 2015 Sea Dogs season, and throw out the ceremonial first-pitch prior to a future Sea Dogs game. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will also be presented with awards. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary ticket to attend a future Sea Dogs game.

The race is open to the public. Walkers and wheelchair racers are welcome as well. A limited number of spots are still available. Registration is $20.00. The kid’s race is free. If you would like to run in the 15th annual Sea Dogs’ Mother’s Day 5K you may register online at www.seadogs.com or at Fleet Feet Maine Running located on Marginal Way in Portland on Friday, May 8th from Noon to 6:00 PM or Saturday, May 9th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Additionally, if spots remain, runners may register the day of the race at Hadlock Field from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

Runners who have already registered may also pick-up their packets at Fleet Feet Maine Running during the same hours as above.

Road Closures:
Park Avenue from Weymouth Street to Saint John Street will be closed to traffic from 8:50 AM to 9:15 AM on Sunday, May 10th.

Pitch for the Cure Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Indians partner with Susan G. Komen for tenth consecutive season

Spokane, WA – The Spokane Indians are excited to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Pitch for the Cure Breast Cancer Walk, presented by Mike’s Hard Lemonade, this August! Click here to register!

Sunday, August 2nd, at Avista Stadium, will mark the tenth anniversary of this fun summer event. The short one-mile walk around Avista Stadium in support for Breast Cancer finishes with participants being recognized on the field during a special ceremony before the 3:30pm game. Indians players will wear pink jerseys and hats – to be auctioned – in the game against the Eugene Emeralds. The Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate will once again be the primary beneficiary of the day’s festivities.

“This is the tenth anniversary of the Pitch for the Cure – that’s an entire decade of raising awareness in the Spokane community…it’s fantastic,” said Randy Schwaegler, President of Komen’s Eastern Washington affiliate Board. “The event keeps growing every year, and the support is non-stop. This is why we come out every year – to give those who fight another reason for tomorrow.”

The cost for the walk is $25 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under. Participants will receive a special edition 10th anniversary T-shirt, a donation in their name to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate, and a ticket to the Spokane Indians baseball game that afternoon.

Last year, the Spokane Indians donated a total of $9,000 to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate. In the ten year partnership, the Spokane Indians have donated over $40,000 to the Komen Foundation. Seventy-five percent of all funds donated to the Susan G. Komen Eastern Washington affiliate stays local and is given back to help those with breast cancer in Eastern Washington.

Deadline for early registration is Friday, July 17th, with a late fee of $5 after this date. Participants have until the day of event to sign-up. Packet pick-up is scheduled for Friday, July 31st from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Spokane Indians Team Store located at Avista Stadium (602 N. Havana) and the day of the walk starting at 2:30 PM at Avista Stadium.

Planned Events for “Chasers Community Week”

  • Monday, May 4 – Storm Chasers staff members and Storm Chasers players volunteered from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. as part of “Rebuilding Together.” The participants helped Helen, an 87-year-old resident, with painting in various rooms and yard clean-up. Storm Chasers players Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann took part in the volunteering from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 5 – Storm Chasers players, as well as select Storm Chasers staff, will visit kids at the Children’s Hospital from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 6 – The Storm Chasers had “Phil the Pig” at the Children’s Museum in April for the Autism Action Partnership, and a check of donations will be presented at the game. Tickets will be donated to families involved with the Omaha Children’s Museum Autism Night.
  • Thursday, May 7 – Players and Storm Chasers staff will serve lunch at the Open Door Mission from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Friday, May 8 – The Storm Chasers will donate 50 tickets to have four Boys Town Houses come to the Friday night game, with a first pitch for each house. Storm Chasers players will greet and take photos before the game.
  • Saturday, May 9 – Partnering with Western Bowl and Muscular Dystrophy Association, a majority of the Storm Chasers roster is scheduled to bowl and interact with MDA families in an exclusive event from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Local Make-A-Wish Foundation will grant a wish on May 4

ZEBULON, NC – The Carolina Mudcats, the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and member of the historic Carolina League, will host the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina as they grant a special wish on May the Fourth Be With You Night at Five County Stadium on Monday, May 4.

May the Fourth Be With You is a Star Wars themed night that will take place on Monday, May 4 when the Mudcats play the Frederick Keys in Zebulon at 7:00 p.m.

The Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation will grant a special wish to a young child with a special ceremony scheduled to take place on the field on May 4 in conjunction with the special theme night. Additionally, the Mudcats will also make a donation to the Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation with a check presentation before the game.

The Mudcats have also invited young fans, and their families, from the Eastern North Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation to participate in the May the Fourth Be With You festivities. Fans wearing a Star Wars themed costume to the game will have an opportunity to purchase $6.00 discounted tickets.

The Carolina Garrison, a local chapter of the 501st Legion (a worldwide Star Wars costuming organization comprised of and operated by Star Wars fans) will also participate in Monday’s May the Fourth Be With You Night. The Carolina Garrison is the only official chapter of the 501st Legion in North and South Carolina.

May the Fourth Be With You is one of several special theme nights set to take place at Five County Stadium during the home stand. The home stand, which begins on Friday, May 1, also features NC State Day and Pro Wrestling Day on Sunday, May 3.

Former NFL and NC State Wolfpack star players Terrence and Torry Holt will be at Five County Stadium for NC State on May 3. The brothers will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and hold signups for their upcoming Holt Brothers Football Camp scheduled for June 27 in Raleigh.

Additionally, an appearance by Sgt. Slaughter is scheduled for Sunday, May 3 as part of Pro Wrestling Day.

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The 2015 “Braves New World” season is the first for the Mudcats as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and their fourth straight in the historic Carolina League. First established in 1991, the Carolina Mudcats are entering their 25th straight season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. Bees to Host 9th Annual ‘Pack the Park Pink’ Night

SALT LAKE CITY (April 28, 2015) – The Salt Lake Bees will host their ninth annual “Pack the Park Pink Night” at Smith’s Ballpark on Saturday, May 9 in collaboration with the Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) and Swing for Life, in an effort to raise funds for breast cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute. This night is part of the club’s year-round community outreach initiatives that support health and wellness, education and youth development.

“Huntsman Cancer Foundation is very grateful to the Bees organization and Miller Sports Properties,” said George Mathis, Development Officer at Huntsman Cancer Foundation. “We are honored to invite the community to be a part of Huntsman Cancer Institute’s efforts to eradicate cancer. What could be better than a night at the beautiful ballpark with your family while supporting cancer research?”

Fans attending the Bees game will be encouraged to help “Pack the Park Pink” by wearing the color pink and anyone wearing pink can go to the box office the day of the game to receive a $3 discount on tickets. During the game, Swing for Life will have pink t-shirts available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting HCF.

The team will be wearing commemorative caps featuring a pink Bees logo and jerseys with pink lettering, which will be auctioned off in a silent auction. The highest bidders will have the opportunity to meet Bees players on the field after the game for photograph opportunities while collecting their player-autographed jerseys. All of the proceeds from the auction will benefit cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Kay Yow Cancer Fund to join Mudcats for “Strikeout Cancer Weekend”

ZEBULON, NC – The Carolina Mudcats, the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and member of the historic Carolina League, are proud to announce the Kay Yow Cancer Fund as an official partner of the “Strikeout Cancer Weekend” event being held at Five County Stadium on May 15, 16 and 17 when the Mudcats play the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will be the official charity for Friday’s May 15 game in Zebulon at 7:00 p.m. Fans wishing to attend the game and support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund can purchase specially priced tickets through the Mudcats front office. A portion of those ticket sales will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Contact Yogi Brewington or Aaron Freeman in the Mudcats front office for more information at (919) 269-2287.

Additionally, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund will be on hand at Friday’s game (May 15) with an information booth available for fans. Representatives from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund will also participate in pregame on field ceremonies.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Mudcats also plan on honoring cancer survivors before the game with a unique on field ceremony. Fans hoping to participate, or wishing to nominate a friend or relative for participation in the ceremony should contact Mr. Brewington or Mr. Freeman at (919) 269-2287.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on December 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization’s namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach.

Kay Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Before her death, she joined forces with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to form the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

“Strikeout Cancer Weekend” at Five County stadium will take place May 15, 16 and 17 when the Mudcats play the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Mudcats players will wear specially designed jerseys for all three games in the series. Those game worn jerseys will then be made available to fans through a special auction.

All of the proceeds from the jersey auction will be donated to local cancer-fighting charities including the “Kay Yow Cancer Fund,” the “Vs. Cancer Foundation” and “Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure.”

The Carolina Mudcats are the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The 2015 “Braves New World” season is the first for the Mudcats as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves and their fourth straight in the historic Carolina League. First established in 1991, the Carolina Mudcats are entering their 25th straight season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. Five Guys Team Up With Lake Monsters For Annual “May Days” Fundraising Campaign

BURLINGTON, VT — The Vermont Lake Monsters are excited to announce Five Guys as a partner for their annual May Days fundraiser to benefit non-profits from across the state of Vermont. “Five Guys May Days” fundraiser will launch May 1st as a month-long program devoted to helping raise funds and awareness for state wide non-profits.

Support of local non-profits has demonstrated the strong commitment both the Lake Monsters and Five Guys have to the greater Burlington community. The goal of this program is not only to provide the opportunity for organizations to raise money, but also raise awareness for their programs while providing a chance for supporters to come together at the ballpark.

COTS is just one of the many local non-profits who has benefited from participating in Five Guys May Days and will continue the tradition this year. “COTS very much appreciates the support we receive from our local community, and the Lake Monsters fundraiser is a great example of how we can work together to raise awareness about homelessness in Vermont” said COTS Executive Director Rita Markley.

Participating non-profits will have the entire month of May to promote and sell $6 Lake Monsters tickets through a specific URL link designated to their organization for a specific game during the season. After the month of May is completed, the Lake Monsters will donate half of the proceeds back to the organization. Following the selling period, Five Guys will donate up to $500 to match the amount raised by the highest selling non-profit in the program. Organizations will then be recognized on field with a check presentation at a Lake Monsters game this season. This opportunity is an easy way to fundraiser for non-profits, simply by reaching out to your employees, supporters, volunteers, and sponsors with the URL link. Gwinnett Braves Award March Grant to Kidsplosion Nation Corp.

Organization receives $1,000 “Salute to the Arts” themed grant

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The Gwinnett Braves have announced the recipient of their $1,000 grant for the month of March. Kidsplosion Nation Corp. has been awarded the “Salute to the Arts” themed grant, aimed at funding an organization that supports art programs or education.

Kidsplosion Nation enables youth to “Discover, Develop, and Display” their gifts and talents at camps throughout economically challenged areas of Gwinnett County. The organization provides afterschool and summer programs that include courses in dance, karate, comedy, music, art, cooking, acting and more.

Those activities provide children with an opportunity to discover what they enjoy, develop those talents through instruction and display their gifts through shows at the end of camps or afterschool programs. The organization partners with Gwinnett Parks and Recreation and Gwinnett County Schools to offer camps in their facilities. It also provides breakfast, lunch and snacks for free.

The $1,000 grant awarded by the Gwinnett Braves will be used for the purchase of snacks and Kidsplosion T-shirts to give campers, as well as website hosting and upkeep costs.

“We are so completely excited to be March’s grant recipient,” Kidsplosion Founder and CEO Carlena Evans said. “This grant will help us purchase summer camp shirts for about 200 students, which makes for a lot of happy campers. We thank the Gwinnett Braves on behalf of Kidsplosion staff, parents and campers.”

About Kidsplosion Nation Corp.: Kidsplosion Nation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization started in 2010 by Carlena Evans. The organization offers camps and afterschool programs for economically disadvantaged children in Gwinnett County areas with the highest need for affordable youth programming. Cardinals to observe National Law Enforcement Week during May 7 game

Springfield, MO – In honor of National Law Enforcement Week from May 10 – 16, the Springfield Cardinals are honoring law enforcement personnel throughout the Springfield area during the Thursday, May 7 game at Hammons Field.

Established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Law Enforcement Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

“The entire Cardinals Organization has the utmost respect for all law enforcement personnel and first responders,” said Springfield Cardinals Vice President / General Manager Matt Gifford. “They are the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday to make our community the great place to live that it is, and we are honored to recognize their service and sacrifices at Hammons Field.”

As part of the evening, Springfield Police Officer Aaron Pearson, who was wounded in the line of duty on January 26, 2015, is scheduled to throw out a Ceremonial First Pitch before the game. Additionally, the Cardinals are donating $5 from every Field Box Ticket to the May 7 game ordered through the link below to Officer Pearson and his family through the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police.

To help raise funds for Officer Pearson, fans must order their tickets for the May 7 game through the dedicated link below or call Community Relations Coordinator Niki Lodholz at (417) 832-3042. First Pitch on Thursday, May 7 is scheduled for 7:10pm, with gates opening at 6:10pm.

Martie Cordaro Receives Jack Lewis Community Service Award at Omaha Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

OMAHA, Neb. – As part of the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Omaha Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro was honored with the Jack Lewis Community Service Award. The event was held at the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Scott Conference Center.

“The Storm Chasers are not validated by Championship rings and trophies, but are with the results that show the staff is truly dedicated to the area we live and work in,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “Our work is not important unless we have an impact on the lives of the people who support us, and that is what we continue to try to live up to every day.”

The Jack Lewis Service Community Service Award is the third community-based honor the Storm Chasers have received since the end of the 2014 season, and second for Cordaro as he was named “Community Partner of the Year” by Community 360 last September. The team was honored at the PRSA Nebraska Paper Anvil Awards Gala last December with the 2014 Community Service Award.

The Storm Chasers had a record-setting 2014 in terms of community involvement as the charitable arm of the team, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, donated $558,733 to local charities. The total was the largest since the team became the Storm Chasers in 2010.

The 2015 Hall of Fame inductees were Bruce Benedict, Ken Geddes, Peaches James, Christy Johnson-Lynch, Charles “Deacon” Jones, the 1985 Omaha Creighton Prep Football team and horse “Omaha.”

In addition to the honor for Cordaro the Westside High School baseball team was named Sportsmen of the Year, Creighton Volleyball’s Kelli Browning was named Sportswoman of the Year and Boxing’s “Fighter of the Year” Terence “Bud” Crawford was named the Founders Award winner.

The Omaha Sports Hall Of Fame was founded in 2006, with a goal to provide a permanent place to honor individuals with strong ties to Omaha who have achieved tremendous success through athletics.
