RiverDogs Begin the Holiday Season with Three Community Initiatives

Club partners with Palmetto Goodwill, Lowcountry Food Bank and Salvation Army to help others

The holidays are right around the corner and the Charleston RiverDogs, the Lowcountry’s professional sports leader, has orchestrated three community-involved programs to help those in need.

“The holiday season will be upon us very soon, and the RiverDogs will once again continue with our commitment to be good citizens and neighbors,” said General Manager Dave Echols. “Our staff is excited to start the holiday season, and part of the season is giving back. And we’ll do it with our ‘Fun Is Good’ approach.”

Beginning on Tuesday, November 18 from 9 am – 6:30 pm, the club will host at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park a clothing donation drive for Palmetto Goodwill. While the RiverDogs will make a significant clothing donation, the club’s staffers will also clean out their own closets and donate items to Goodwill. Fans are invited to stop by Riley Park and donate some of their clothing to Goodwill, and we’ll treat you to a cup of free hot chocolate and a voucher for a game in 2015. The RiverDogs’ popular mascot, Charlie T. RiverDog, will be on hand and will donate a bag of his clothing. Charlie also encourages other local mascots to join in the activities.

Then on Friday, Nov. 21, beginning at 12 noon, the club will host its annual staff/ RiverDogs Potluck Lunch. This year the Potluck Lunch will also be a food drive in conjunction with the Lowcountry Food Bank. In this, the RiverDogs invite their season ticket holders and many loyal fans to The Joe to spend “Thanksgiving” with us as we collect food. Those who come are encouraged to bring a food dish and canned food for the drive. A RSVP is requested to haley@riverdogs.com.

And finally on Saturday, December 13 beginning at 11 am, the RiverDogs will offer the opportunity kids and fans to have pictures taken with “Charlie Claus” and Santa as the team hosts a toy drive in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Here, families may come to The Joe and have their kids get a free picture with Charlie and Santa Claus. In order to get a picture taken, one must donate a child’s new toy to the Salvation Army.

At the event, Christmas music will be played over the park’s public address system, vendors will be on hand with their goods set up on tables. There will also be a special Christmas-themed craft section and the popular bounce house will be open. Light snacks and hot cocoa will also be available. And as a bonus, the RiverDogs will donate $1 for every Kids Club Member who attends the event. Santa will only be at The Joe for a limited time.

Spotlight: Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Hy-Vee Shadow Lake – Nov. 21

The Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will serve as bell ringers for donations to the Salvation Army in front of Hy-Vee Shadow Lake on Friday, November 21^st from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is the 4^th consecutive year the Storm Chasers staff has served as bell ringers. Mascot Stormy will be participating from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Staff Volunteering for November

Drumsticks on Wheels – On Saturday, November 22 starting at 9:30 a.m., members of the Storm Chasers Front Office Staff will volunteer their time to deliver the fixings of a proper Thanksgiving dinner to those in need in the Omaha Metro throughout the day. This is the fourth consecutive year the Chasers have participated in this cause.

Bellevue Bruins Baseball Spaghetti Feed – Wednesday, November 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at DJ’s Dugout in Bellevue.
Stormy and Vortex’s Birthday Party – Thursday, November 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Storm Front Team Store hosts the annual party with refreshments and party games, where attendees are asked to bring wrapped, unopened toys to donate to “Toys for Tots.”
Westroads Mall Santa Arrival Event – Saturday, November 15 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Cougars Kick Off Winter Coat Drive

Fans who donate an item will receive one undated ticket voucher, valid for a 2015 regular season Cougars game

The Kane County Cougars, along with the South Elgin Lions Club, have formally kicked off the 2014 Winter Coat Drive at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars have been proud partners with Lions International for many years and beginning on November 11, both the Cougars and Lions International are counting on fans’ generosity this holiday season.

Fans are asked to bring a gently-used winter coat or winter outerwear item to the Cougars’ administrative office lobby (2-story glass building located next to Gate 3) between 9 AM and 5 PM Monday-Friday. In conjunction with the South Elgin Lions Club, the Cougars are collecting items that will be donated to area families who are in need this winter. Fans who donate an item will receive one undated ticket voucher, valid for a 2015 regular season Cougars game. All donated items will be given to area families who are in need this winter. The Cougars are requesting that items be donated by Friday morning, December 19.

Sky Sox Partner For Holiday Turkey Drive

Security Service Field will serve as drop off for “Turkey Team” Community Turkey Drive

For the second year in a row, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox have partnered with Care and Share Food Bank, Springs Rescue Mission and Catholic Charities of Central Colorado’s Marian House as part of their region-wide community turkey drive for the 2014 holiday season.

“The Sky Sox are proud to partner with this incredible group of Colorado Springs community partners in an effort to make a significant impact this holiday season,” said Sky Sox President and General Manager Tony Ensor. “We are truly thankful to be a part of this community and this effort to help those most in need. We hope that the citizens of Colorado Springs will come out in large numbers to support this worthy cause and drop off their contributions as Security Service Field.”

Those interested in donating a frozen turkey can do so at Security Service Field on Friday, November 14 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The Sky Sox will also be providing one free ticket to Opening Night 2015 (Thursday, April 9) to anyone who donates a turkey at Security Service Field on November 14. Additional drop off locations include Springs Rescue Mission, Calvary Worship Center or Compassion International.

“It is only through collaborative community efforts can we accomplish a goal of feeding our neighbors in need,” said Lynne Telford, CEO Care and Share Food Bank. “By combining our efforts to meet the needs we hope to provide more turkeys, the Thanksgiving centerpiece, this holiday season.”

Keys to Host Toys for Tots Drive

Fans Who Contribute New Toy to Receive Tickets and Hat

The holiday season is right around the corner, and for the third consecutive season the Keys will be partnering with Toys for Tots. The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children.

Members of the Frederick community can drop off toys at Harry Grove Stadium starting on November 5, from 9-5 p.m, Monday to Friday. Anyone who donates a toy will receive two tickets to a 2015 Frederick Keys home game along with two Keys hats.

The Toys for Tots Drive concludes on Saturday, December 13, when the Keys host their annual holiday event in the Mattress Warehouse Club.

“We received tremendous support from the community during our toy drive last year,” said Director of Marketing Bridget McCabe. “The Keys love bringing smiles to the faces of local kids during the holiday season, and our annual partnership with Toys for Tots allows us to do just that.”

The Keys Holiday Event on December 13 will run from 10am-1pm. More details will be available at a later date. Ticket plans for the 2015 season are now available, and can be purchased by calling an account manager at 301-815-9900. Every plan comes with the choice of a Zach Britton or Kevin Gausman bobblehead.

Frederick Keys Care Grants Awarded

Recipients of grants for 2014-2015 announced

It is with great pleasure that the Frederick Keys, Class A minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, announce the recipients of Frederick Keys Care grants for 2014-2015. The Frederick Keys Care Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Joel Stephens played in the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league system until he lost his courageous battle with colon cancer in 1998 at the age of 22. The fund was established as the Joel A. Stephen’s Memorial Fund in 2002 to continue his desire to reach out to youth in need with compassion and encouragement. In 2011 the fund’s name was changed, with the support of Joel’s family, to The Frederick Keys Care Fund in order to continue Joel’s legacy and to acknowledge the Frederick Keys commitment to furthering Joel’s fund.

Since its inception, The Frederick Keys Care Fund has awarded more than $53,000.00 to local youth organizations (including this year’s grant amount of $8,696.00). This year’s grant money will be divided among five projects for local nonprofit organizations.

Teen Enrichment Program, Project ALIVE of the Housing Authority of the City of Frederick is designed to serve up to 15 teens, focusing specifically on those with aspirations to attend college and will include college visits and a two-day retreat focused on character building and team building. ($2,024.00)

Child Therapy Supplies, Heartly House located in Frederick, Maryland provides, among other things, therapeutic counseling to children who have been the victims of abuse or who have witnessed violence in their homes. Funding is being provided to buy specific supplies to engage children in therapy and enable their recovery as well as provide food for family meals during a concentrated group program called Strengthening Family Coping Resources. ($2,024.00)

Lead4Life-First Chance 4U Young Men’s Group Project, in partnership with the Frederick County Department of Juvenile Justice offices, will expand services to males 12-18 years of age who are involved or at high risk of involvement with the criminal justice system through a positive youth development model that is designed to reduce youth recidivism of crime and delinquent behaviors as well as teach how to cope with crisis. ($2,024.00)

Blessings in a Backpack Frederick Schools, provides weekend nutrition to over 320 Frederick elementary school children who depend on the Free and Reduced Meal Program offered Monday through Friday in the schools. This grant will allow Blessings in a Backpack to help more students in need receive weekend nutrition. ($2,024.00)

Homeless Youth Activities, Advocates for Homeless Families, serves youth in the Advocates’ programs by providing them with scholarships to participate in extracurricular activities such as sports and clubs during the school year and the Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County’s summer “bridges” program that keeps youth actively engaged in learning and fun over summer vacation to prevent summer learning loss and ensure they are ready for the new school year. ($600.00)

The Frederick Keys Care Fund is part of The Community Foundation of Frederick County’s Universal Grant Application funding program that takes place in the fall of each year. Nonprofit organizations that provide direct services to our Frederick County youth and young adults may apply on behalf of their programs. Members of the organization(s) who receive funding through “Frederick Keys Care” are invited to attend the luncheon following the annual Frederick Keys Charity Golf Classic to be recognized as the current Fund recipients and again on the field at Harry Grove Stadium prior to a Frederick Keys game as well as other activities that may seem appropriate.

Zephyr Field an official holiday drop-off location for new toys

This holiday season, the New Orleans Zephyrs are again partnering with Toys For Tots, with Zephyr Field providing an official drop-off location for toys to be given to needy children in the community.

As sponsors of the Toys For Tots program, new, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Zephyr Field through Friday, December 12. Those toys will be delivered to less fortunate children in the community as Christmas presents.

The Toys For Tots program accepts only new, unwrapped toys.

Toys For Tots campaigns are conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in approximately 500 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Baysox Accepting Nominations, Donations for Holiday Hope

The Bowie Baysox announce today that Louie’s Holiday Hope Project returns to brighten the holiday season for local families in need this year. Beginning now and continuing through the month of November, the team will be accepting nominations for families that need assistance this holiday season. The Baysox will also be collecting gently used coats, new socks and other warm clothing to be donated to area families.

Louie’s Holiday Hope Project began in 2007 and touched 13 families with 38 children last year. This year, the team is proud to partner with Prince George’s County Fire/EMS department, the Bowie Police Department and Bowie Youth & Family Services to help as many families as possible.

“The Baysox and Louie are happy to help some area families in need during the holiday season,” said Baysox Marketing Director Brandan Kaiser. “We truly appreciate the assistance we receive from our partners and fans throughout the year which allows Holiday Hope to brighten the lives of some great kids.”

“We’ve partnered with Louie’s Holiday Hope Project for the last several years and have been impressed with all that has been done to make the holiday special for so many Bowie families,” said Bowie Youth & Family Services Director Wendy Wilcox. “Without this assistance, many area parents would not be able to prepare a special meal or provide gifts for their children.”

To ensure that the program reaches as many families as possible, the Baysox welcome help from their fans. Members of the community can nominate families that need assistance by visiting www.baysox.com and filling out the Louie’s Holiday Hope Project form under the Community tab on the website. The team will not be able to help everyone that is nominated, but will consider as many options as possible. A Baysox staff member may contact the submitter for additional details or clarification, but all submissions remain confidential. Nominations must be received by Friday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m.

Prince George’s Stadium will also serve as a collection point for warm clothes and sock donations in conjunction with Louie’s Holiday Hope Project. The team invites fans to bring gently used winter coats, new socks and other warm clothing to the Baysox front office during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday, November 24) to donate to local families in need.

Kernels donate MWL fine money to HACAP Food Reservoir

The Cedar Rapids Kernels donated their share of the Midwest League fine money, collected from the 16 MWL clubs, to the HACAP Food Reservoir.

As a member of America’s Second Harvest and the National Food Bank Network, the HACAP Food Reservoir distributes donated products to area soup kitchens, pantries, senior & child care centers, drug & alcohol rehabilitation centers and other non-profit food programs that feed the needy. Annually, the HACAP Food Reservoir Programs distribute 2.4 million pounds of food to local organizations and provide 4,000 food boxes to families in need.

The Midwest League collects fine money from players and coaches throughout the season when they are ejected from a game, and the total amount collected this season was $8,450 of which the Kernels’ share was $529.

The Cedar Rapids Kernels are pleased to support HACAP, a diverse, community-focused non-profit dedicated to empowering and improving the lives of families living with the everyday barriers of poverty.

In recognition of “Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” the Albuquerque Isotopes will be auctioning off authentic “Dodger Blue” weekend jerseys with net proceeds benefiting S.A.F.E. House Domestic Violence Shelter. More than 40 game-worn jerseys featuring player nameplates will be auctioned off exclusively online, and an additional 26 authentic jerseys without nameplates will be auctioned.

“With October being domestic violence awareness month, we saw this as a great opportunity to provide a unique, game-used item to our fans and give something back to the community,” said John Traub, General Manager of the Isotopes. “S.A.F.E. House does great work in our community, and we are honored to be able to donate funds to help them fulfill their mission.”

The auction will begin Friday, October 17th, at noon MT and run through Friday, October 24, at noon MT. To bid on a jersey, visit http://isotopes.milbauctions.com. Opening bids for game-worn jerseys with nameplates will start at $180, while other authentic jerseys without a nameplate will begin at $150. Each jersey will also be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity.

“We are truly grateful for the support we have received from the Isotopes over the last several years,” said Michele Fuller, Executive Director of S.A.F.E. House. “The jersey auction is an exceptional event because it demonstrates both their awareness of domestic violence and their commitment to helping end that violence in our community.”

Traditionally donned by Albuquerque during weekend home games, the jersey features “Isotopes” script lettering across the front with the Topes’ “A” logo on the right sleeve and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ “LA” logo on the left sleeve (see photo attached).

S.A.F.E. House Domestic Violence Shelter aims to shelter and empower survivors of intimate partner domestic violence and to improve the way New Mexico responds to domestic violence. S.A.F.E. House strives for a community that is free from all forms of oppression and violence and serves more than 1,000 families through our doors annually. S.A.F.E. Safe & Seen trick-or-treat event set for Oct. 26

3rd annual kids Halloween event at Medlar Field

The State College Spikes, Centre LifeLink EMS and B94.5 FM are once again teaming up to present this year’s safest and most fun children’s trick-or-treating event in the State College area.

The Third Annual Safe & Seen in the Ballpark will take place on Sunday, October 26 from 4-6 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, the home of the Spikes. This free admission event is designed for young trick-or-treaters and their parents and will include many fun activities for children and their families.

Each child is invited to wear his or her favorite Halloween costume and bring their bag or bucket to be filled by area non-profit agencies or community supporters stationed throughout the ballpark. Trick-or-treaters will be invited to go “door to door” to visit each participating group to collect treats and other fun items.

Families can also enjoy ambulance tours, fall crafts, kids games, meet and greets with Spikes mascots and more. The event will be held rain or shine as most of activities and trick-or-treat stations will be under cover.

Anyone attending the event is encouraged, but not required, to bring a donation for Centre LifeLink EMS in support of their life-saving services.

A Child’s Voice CAC, Inc. earns $1,000 “All About Kids” grant

The Gwinnett Braves have announced the recipient of their $1,000 grant for the month of September. A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center, Inc. has been awarded September’s “All About Kids” themed grant, aimed at funding an organization that benefits children.

A Child’s Voice CAC, Inc. provides a comprehensive, coordinated response for child victims of sexual abuse or physical abuse and for witnesses to violence, abuse or homicide. The Center partners with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to facilitate forensic interviews and medical examinations in a safe, child-friendly environment. Interviews are video-recorded so that children are spared the need to relive traumatic events while valuable, accurate information can be gathered as evidence.

The $1,000 grant awarded by the Gwinnett Braves will provide 13 direct forensic and medical services, free of charge, to children and their families in Newton, Walton and surrounding counties.

“A Child’s Voice Child Advocacy Center would like to thank the Gwinnett Braves for their generous support of our organization,” said Administrative Assistant Katie Bruner. “With this grant, we will continue our work with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to provide forensic medical examinations utilizing tele-health in our efforts to deliver the best medical care possible for the children who visit our center. We look forward to partnering with the Gwinnett Braves to serve children and their families now and in the future.”

CHASERS IN THE COMMUNITY – 2014 Season Highlights

Largest total donation number since becoming the Storm Chasers with $558,733 in the past year

Matt Fields and Buddy Baumann visiting the VA Hospital during the 2014 season was one of the many highlights from a record-setting season for the Storm Chasers in terms of community involvement.

The Omaha Storm Chasers finished the 2014 season in spectacular fashion, winning the Triple-A National Championship in back-to-back seasons for the first time in franchise history, but it was also a record-setting year for the Chasers community involvement. The charitable arm of the team, the Home Run Foundation of Greater Omaha, donated $558,733 to local charities in the past year for the largest total since becoming the Storm Chasers.

“The first four years at Werner Park have been nothing but historic on the field, but what the Storm Chasers staff takes the most pride in is the impact we have in the community we call home,” said Martie Cordaro, President and General Manager of the Omaha Storm Chasers. “To set total donation records in back-to-back years is as great of a victory as back-to-back National Championships in my eyes.”

At Werner Park, the Storm Chasers showcased 78 non-profit groups throughout the 2014 season with the Live Wise Coalition Community Organization of the Night to provide the outlet for many worthwhile causes in the Omaha Metro. This included Game Worn Jersey Auctions, which raised $14,640 for three local charities, and a highlight of Werner Park involvement with fans and staff donating more than $3,000 and 630 items to Pilger Tornado Relief over two games in late June.

Staples of Omaha Storm Chasers Baseball, “Hy-Vee Canned Food Sunday” and the “McDonald’s and Huber Automotive Hurl the Pearl” contest, had strong 2014 campaigns. The Heartland Hope Mission received 5,327 canned food donations ($37,289), the most since the move to Werner Park, while “Hurl the Pearl” accumulated $15,311 for the Ronald McDonald House marking a third straight year the team has raised more than $15,000 for the promotion.

The Storm Chasers players and mascots donated their time to the community with numerous player appearances at places such as Children’s/VA Hospitals. Stormy, Casey, Vortex and the three new mascots Kernel Cobb, Cappy and Sizzle made 335 mascot appearances throughout the year which was up by more than 100 appearances compared to the 2013 season.

The front office staff donated 870 hours throughout the year, including the Storm Chasers helping struggling families during last holiday season in “Drumstick On Wheels” and Chasers FUNdamentals teaching baseball to underprivileged youth this past summer. Last month, Martie Cordaro and the Storm Chasers were named the “Community Partner of the Year” by Community 360.

Members of the C's front office staff join Safeway Canada and Salvation Army staff to celebrate another Canadians Thanksgiving in Downtown Vancouver. — Members of the C’s front office staff join Safeway Canada and Salvation Army staff to celebrate another Canadians Thanksgiving in Downtown Vancouver.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club in cooperation with Safeway Canada handed out 100 family-sized turkeys on Thursday afternoon to local families in need at The Salvation Army located at 3221 Fraser Street.

The Canadians and Safeway Canada have taken pride in working together for the past seven years to continue this community initiative that brings families from all across Vancouver together with a family-sized centerpiece in tie for the holiday weekend.

“We are fortunate to have a partner like Safeway Canada who generously donates these family-sized turkeys to families in need. Through the efforts of The Salvation Army, we are able to reach those families from all across Vancouver who would benefit most from this kind of effort,” states Vancouver Canadians Director, Community Relations Jeff Holloway.

Since its inception in 2008, the Canadians along with Safeway Canada have donated more than 800 turkeys along with basting trays and cooking instructions to families from all across Vancouver.

The Vancouver Canadians Baseball Club wishes to thank both Safeway Canada and The Salvation Army for making another ‘Canadians Thanksgiving’ possible and wish everyone a festive holiday weekend.
